True story: I wanted to listen to something narrated by David, instead of the Civil War doc because it's pretty heavy stuff. I looked up the narrator and discovered David McCullough earlier this year, and listened to everything. Then realized that he isn't with us anymore... and cried like a baby. This man made me proud to be American, at a time when that was a difficult task and I would love to thank him for it.
Brian Lamb's questions elict fascinating mini-dissertations from McCullough that supplement his book and that shed light on his method as a writer. Inspiring on multiple levels.
Truly a masterpiece depicting historical movement of people from all parts of the world moving tp Paris to better their knowledge of medicine, painting, sculpturing, building, and much more! Lots of great historical content!
Yes, Saint-Gaudens. When I lived in St. Paul, there was one of his sculptures which had been atop a building and saved when the building was demolished. It had been mounted at street level where it could be appreciated by passers-by, but I think most of them didn’t know what they had.
I was lucky enough to work for many years in NYC near Grand Army Plaza, and got to walk by Sherman Memorial by Saint-Gaudens, hundreds of times and I was always amazed by it.
Beautiful time spent listening to a wonderous writer. Clearly a man who could have been a character in his books about interesting persons.

I am a commercial fisherman and heard a few stories but no one can spin a yarn like Mr. McCullouhg.

Superb!
51:34 I feel like recognizing and pronouncing the plural of "abyss" is required of a nationally televised book show host.
Am I the only person that would love to see an interview with David McCullough and Malcolm Gladwell...the history and facts they would share?!
Both great communicators, only one a charlatan.
