  • David McCullough, host of PBS' American Experience, tells the story of Americans in the ranks: men of every shape, size, and color; farmers, schoolteachers, shoemakers, no-accounts, and mere boys turned soldiers.

I listened to the audiobook of 1776 narrated by McCullough and it's amazing. He takes you there and makes you feel the weight of every sacrifice. Definitely worth a read.

He's a phony. 90% of the videos with him in them have the comments turned off because he's such a narcissistic hack that doesn't tolerate dissent. He is a coward that kneels in front of the Leftist, Woke Bolsheviks that wont anyone rights of Angela Davis speak on a college campus.

Absolutely. But he's been given sort-shrift because of his consistency between conscience and actions. "All men are created equal" -- except those who aren't.
He gives a terrific speech about Adams at the "John Adams Institute" in Holland/the Netherlands -- also available on youtube.

Those cannons went right through my hometown. My 5th ggf, Samuel Ellis was on duty one day at Bunker Hill when George Washington rode up on his horse. GW pulled out his eye-glass and was watching the movements of the British while the cannon were being planted. He then handed the eye-glass with a characteristic familiarity over to my 5th ggf so that he may view the movements of the British after which quite a conversation followed between a humble soldier and the father of our country.

Unlike most academic historians, McCullough was an English major at Yale and I think it really shows in his work. He narrates history for what it is, linked stories rather than disputations. He is such an amazing story teller. 1776 and John Adams are 10/10 for sure.

Probably the most in-depth and greatest lectures by David McCollough on his book, _1776_ . He captures history as no other historian has!
In Volume 2 of his biography on Washington, Washington Irving states that, on June 16th, 1775, George Washington received word from the Second Continental Congress of its unanimous decision to appoint him as Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army (Irving, Washington, Stein, Jess M] _Life of George Washington_ 1:109 Tarrytown, New York, 1975)
John Adams wrote in his diary that, he proposed Washington "a gentleman, whose skill and experience as an officer, whose independent fortune, great talents, and excellent universal character, would command the approbation of all America, and unite the cordial exertions of all the colonies better than any person in the Union." (L.H. Butterfield, et. al., eds., _Diary and Autobiography of John Adams_ , 4 vols.[Cambridge, Mass., 1961], 3:322-23 GW was unanimously chosen general by ballot on 15 June (JCC
description begins Worthington Chauncey Ford et al., eds. Journals of the Continental Congress, 1774-1789. 34 vols. Washington, D.C., 1904-37. description ends, 2:91).

So unfortunate our Founding Fathers were slave owners. I'm a white Republican male. I must say, there was no excuse for slavery, at any time in the history of man. I love my country and her story but I must say, as smart as they were, as brave as they were, our founding fathers should be ashamed.

Not all founding fathers were slave owners at all. In fact most if not all the New Englanders were vehemently opposed to slavery. Prime example is John Adams and his son John Quincy Adams. David's book on Adams explores this in great detail .
