I realized that staying up past 10pm wasn’t adding anything to my life. Like i wasn’t doing anything i was proud of after 10pm. So i started going to bed earlier and getting up earlier. I feel better about the things i do in the morning than the things i used to do between 10pm and midnight
Funnily, it was the opposite for me. I listed to a lot of productivity advice in the same vein and forced myself to go to bed early, but that didn't seem to increase me productivity. It just made me more tired and feel like I had even less free time. I identified that my most productive hours were when others were sleeping, as that removed basically every distraction that I had. So I just slept whenever I felt like it and my job allowed for (Iooked for a job that was fine with it or in another timezone) and for the first time I my life I actually started to have fun at my job AND my side projects
@@alialqaraghuli same thing for me, and i’m pretty sure that it’s because i was very frustrated before clicking the video. mainly because i’m struggling to start my tasks and with my efficiency in general. so when you said that you’re frustrated and described exactly why. i just got a “yep, that’s right“ moment lol
Bro, thanks for the content, if I may add on the procrastination part, it is not just about the logic part, most of the time its because of our feelings. Most of the time we are even too distracted to process our own feeling that we dont even realise its about fear of failure, or trauma, or whatever response triggered. We just felt negative and we procrastinate. The key is to be aware of that feeling and process it, this takes some time, mostly quiet undistracted time, to translate it into “talks” before we can even start the self-talk properly
THANK YOU! I have always been in awe of other ADHDers who can achieve so much. I am not on medication and I can barely do the housework well, not to mention trying not to set the kitchen on fire when I'm cooking the dinner. As a mature woman I cannot stress enough the importance of HORMONE balance and the link between EXCESS progesterone and depression in women with ADHD. I only recently learned this (in my 50's) and it has helped enormously. Blessings to you all. 🙏🙏🙏
I don't know your reasons for not taking medication of course, but if you're just skeptical, it's worth it to at least try for a while and see if it helps. I have ADD and was always zoning out mid conversation, but after taking medication I could actually pay attention to the other person and what they're saying. I think it might also have quadrupled my ability to not set the kitchen on fire. Blessing to you :)
This is the most all encompassing productivity system that I have seen. When he said "other systems only focus on the execution step, like Pomodoro". Wow.
This is by far the best explanation on how to focus/hyper focus with the theme of ADHD. The only thing I’d explain a little more is the divide and the execution (executive function) to help flesh out these concepts. This is coming from someone who’s been struggling for 15 plus years to extract my full potential and has a hard time understanding things. I plan to watch this video over and over and make my own system. I’m glad someone else was frustrated with all the other types of videos/channels that talk about “Just do it!”. It’s not that easy. It’s more nuanced for someone who struggles to pick an idea/prioritize something, let alone start that thing. Thank you!
It's been two weeks I've been applying it. First i deleted all social medias that was messing up with my priorities of studying as a engineering student. My PC now only has the softwares i need for work/UNI and chrome for google classrom and studies Website, as I'm learning my fourth language (mandarim), I've been getting much faster results nos. I gotta tell you, I've never felt more productive in my life. It feels like you just took away a big heavy iron bag from your shoulders. I organize myself at night what I'm gonna do the next day by writing in a small book. And i also only use 1,5hr a day my phone just to talk with parents and deal with university issues. I've been exercising regularly to stay sane keep my mind healthy because it helps me. I feel more productive and also more motivated to do stuffs. After you remove your obstacles, all the other things becomes easier to do.
How do you delete the social media you need for work? This is where I get stuck on the subtract step. Examples: My work uses Whatsapp and Discord for communication, I study RUclips videos for work.
@@wiegraf9009 you can use an extension or app to set a limit time to access social networks and set a time slot to surf them, example 30 minutes or 1 hour per day is enough to update all your social media accounts.

I had a hard time following the explanation for some reason but I think there’s some good advice in there. I scrolled through the comments and found a quick description that helped me understand so I’ll leave a summary here too: Subtract - Remove obstacles to goal (ie get rid of things that make it harder) Add + Add support systems (ie identify what makes it easier / what works and do more of that) Divide / Self-Observe (ie self reflect) Multiply x Continue process (ie replicate results)
Thank you brother for sharing this. Very well-articulated, you've clearly put in a lot of effort in this. Subscribed and looking forward to seeing more of your content!
I dont have ADHD and I dont need this how to video, but it's 100% correct. I use this for at least the last ten years and it works good. Especially the subtract and the prioritize waypoints are sometimes more important to me than doing the real job. For me it's sometimes about getting my tools to supply me better, so then I code on the solution and boom. yet another small stepp of more time or better productivity kicks in. And never forget: consistency is king and quality comes from quantity
This couldn't have come at a better time for me. I am struggling a lot with ADHD and procratination, specially now that I am trying to look at a subject for my thesis (at least I know that I wanna make it about cybersecurity, just need to know _what_ I'll be doing lmao) while managing like 5-7 uni projects (some that are part of my classes and others that are research groups) and at times I just feel like I crash down and do nothing, just stare at a blank wall and regret that I'm not doing what I can/want. Blessings my man, you're helping out so many of us and we couldn't be thankful enough.
The thing I like about this is there’s a bunch of advice that says “only do ONE thing” or “only do five things and make sure you don’t work on anything else” and that never made sense. But the subtract idea makes perfect sense.
New here, and just wanted to say thank you. I think when I watch productivity videos, even some designed for ADHD, they seem to only fit people who are able to think clearly and choose items independently of their thought process. This system seems to address our thought process as ADHD individuals. Solid stuff and look forward to more videos. Maybe I will get the course in the future at some point.
Solid advice man. Often the simple and straightforward solutions are the best. My favorite quotes are the simple ones that say a lot with little words: -Action conquers fear. -It’s easier to keep up than to catch up. -Try and fail, but don't fail to try. -Do more with less.
Great points here. I know we are tired of notion templates, but I feel I have to point out August Bradley's Pillars, Pipelines, and Vaults (PPV) system. Particularly the pillars and pipelines part is very much aligned with what you say here. You start with clarity about the pillars (core values, responsibilities) in your life and then define "pipelines" consisting of projects and action items that support the maintenance of your pillars. The key principle with PPV is ALIGNMENT. Alignment of your pillars to your heart and mind, and alignment of your pipelines to your pillars. Well defined pillars also helps a lot with prioritization as you can get a good grasp of the actual impact of each task on your life.
Honestly I never post comments on RUclips but this was the first video that resonated strongly with me. Thank you for making this. Now it’s time to implement it.

When the self talk was good - I managed to get my brain to focus long enough to get into a bootcamp for software engineering, Today, I'm three weeks into the bootcamp but I am also close to being asked to withdraw because of issues dealing with my productivity. I wish I had seen this video a month ago! I have learned a lot these weeks, but not how to overcome my ADHD,; it IS the one thing in my life that hinders every aspect of my life. It is part of who I am... I don't wish I was someone else, but I do wish it was easier for other people to understand what it REALLY feels like... invisible disorders are so difficult because you look like everything is ok, we learn to mask and make our own way, but life is still really hard. I remember a co-worker once told me that I looked like a person who was really good at life - Lol... I almost spit out my coffee laughing so hard.. couldn't be further from the truth.. she had no idea all the coping mechanisms I use just to seem normal. Yet at home.. behind closed doors my life was a MESS because there we can let go of the masking and relax a bit ! And yes, failing IS the reason we don't try so many times, because then those things that people think about you are made more real. "Maybe I am dumb, stupid, incapable, lazy or whatever they want to say that day". I know ADHD does NOT mean dumb, but that IS what a lot of people think it means... I hate to reinforce that stereotypical thinking with my failures - I want to prove them wrong, not right. We're also great at rambling! So, if you got this far - thanks for reading- ...I have to go now and do a project on APIs :)
I tried the GTD method, that incorporates some ideas you said here (the next step for each project, for example) and the scrum, that identifies and remove the impediments to the goal. The problem is that each of this system has many other redundant aspects and routines, filing systems and meetings... they are overwhelming and my mind goes blank. Total blackout, brain fog. You did a great job in grabbing only the elements that are needed. Thanks!!!
I didn't watch the video, but just wanted you to know that I have added it to my "Watch Later"-playlist. I am sure this'll come in handy when it gets suggested to me again in 3 months from now. Thanks!
clear and on point substract is important - and i like my "to not do list", sadly have to to that before most projects as my interests and structures change a lot for clarity - i like to draft&sketch and imagine how something schould look, and as my working memory is not great i sometimes need to "learn" the steps of the assignment, then i go along the lines of "great artists steal" - i go to image search how a final project/text/task could look, i like chat gpt aswell to formulate me some mock-texts (when i need to do write ups) and i ask chatgpt aswell to present me some kind of schedule and sub-tasks i could do for execution i mostly start out with rough steps, putting structure and unrefined words/or in physical projects atleast do something so alot is pareto-oriented with doing the 20% that bring 80% value
Oh you should make this into a series where you bust productivity myths and instead of them being overwhelming. You can simplify in just a page. Your credibility as an engineer would be so much helpful. You should be as big if not bigger than Ali abdall. But if you want specifics create a list of videos where you bust all the productivity myths people have by putting up these one page templates . Simple and easy to implement. Maybe show some examples where you can take a few of the people in your program to double their productivity and half their time and record them as a part of the vlog. You could also add an incentive for people like bonus courses or 50%refunds or anything like that to encourage people to come and try which may give you more visibility. Then maybe do a combo video after collecting enough people with a result about how they overcame their beliefs to do it. Like an interview. Best of luck 😁
The thong is struggle with the most is the definition of what productivity is. Most guides and yt channels will mention being productive at work or school, with homework, job hunting..etc. Basically the aspects of life we dread but literally being productive for me is doing the dishes, reading my favorite book, watching a movie I’ve been excited to see. Productivity takes on different forms for all of us. We don’t all see productivity as (something we dont want to do, some of us dread and then procrastinate doing things they’re passionate about, they love, or are excited to learn about. So if you’re like me and maybe dont want to be productive in the traditional sense, i see you and it’s okay to work on being productive in the aspects of life that you want to enjoy but your brain won’t let you >:(
being productive means to me accomplishing things that I want to (and for this you need a clear system). accomplishing things can be my job, or getting to know some things about my mind better or solving a problem I had for several weeks.. it can be anything, even being intentionally lazy and help your soul to get comfortable and really relax better can also be a goal, and if u achieve it, you have been productive, because you produced the solution to that problem. but, for example, if you are skipping from video to video and keep doing that for the whole day instead of trying to use your (morning)time in a more meaningful way (like being productive on at least anything important), then you are not productive. but it doesnt need to be a problem, for example if you are crazy rich and you love to see all videos before you die (jokin). it depends on your personal situation. you decide. but whenever you decided to achieve something, you may or may not need a rock solid system that really works for becoming productive.
As an engineer with ADHD (though not as successful) myself, distraction is indeed my worst obstacle. Guess I really have to subtract first. This video addresses so many things I struggle with. I'll start applying it, hope it'll improve my life. :D
As somebody who has struggled with ADHD their entire life, i look forward to really giving this simple system a try. I have a few goals i want to achieve in the coming months. I believe every challenge is an opportunity. Let's go!
I need to say that’s one of the most interesting and well done videos on the topic. I just want to argue that its very clear your “engineer background bias” ahahah You have this approach of : define a problem , analyze how to solve it in practical manner, how tweak different parameters or reverse engineering all the outcomes. This actually works a lot in daily life and it’s a good thing. BUT I have a “psychology background bias” ahahah and I think you didn’t focus enough on emotions . You just talk yourself out of fear of failure in a practical way analyzing all the different possible outcomes and just choose the best based on objective measurable measures. I mean this is fast and gets you straight to the point which in the short term period is perfect and you actually are productive . I don’t think in the long term this is beneficial, because you’re not understanding the “deep why” of your fear of failure and sometimes you could gaslight yourself just to get things done , like yeah go fast and don’t think about it. I am on the spectrum of ADHD and a lot of times little negative feedback from environment can affect my mood and if I don’t stop even for 2 minutes thinking about it , I could be productive but in a bad mood, and things usually are not done at my best. in my opinion you could have focused more on the role of emotions, that at the end of the day make us humans If someone will ever read this comment my humble advice is: productivity is strictly related to emotions, even if you lose some time in some days it’s beneficial for you life to feel them, embrace them and never solve them, just grow out of them My humble protocol that works for myself : Stop , feel do not analyze , raise your self awareness , be compassionate to yourself and take care, understand that step-by-step you can do everything, trust yourself and the process
@@alialqaraghuliI struggle with time management and getting things done. It’s not for a lack of effort or motivation. It’s not utilizing my skills sets to the best of my ability at the right time. Hi Ali, I am a Software Engineer and currently unemployed. I completed my graduate degree and struggling to make ends meet and there is the 50k debt on my head. I have never been able to self-diagnose or identify why is it that I run away from even the simplest of tasks- it's because I procrastinated on tasks that were of higher importance and over the years I started procrastinating on everything. I will definitely try this method and write the results here. Thanks!
Thanks, here is my take away from the vid. Subtract bad habits. Add good habits. Divide a proper plan and constantly self-reflect. Multiply by consistently stick with it.
Key point: while Ali worked @ Space-X, engineers set goals to intentionally fail. Failing and learning from these intentional experiments made them iterate and learn @ a 10x speed compared to most other teams & companies who twiddle their thumbs while failing to take action. This means that speed + execution towards a complex goal to intentionally fail is a force multiplier towards success.
I think an aspect that may have been missed (generally not necessarily for you in particular) is motivation. Motivation is a big part of why people with ADHD may procrastinate, or loose interest in any task. Providing external motivation where internal may not be strong enough within the task can help a lot. Example I used games food or snacks to set completion targets for my dissertation and for my work (of course I have other aspects missing) but peoples brains seeking dopamine hits is fundamentally significant. Would you consider it as a part of these steps or just a part of execution?
I was very productive since I started to learn about increasing my productivity from "experts" - you right, everything is so complicated and when you started it is endless task management... another problem is modern companies using those fancy management software and instead of working you need to fill up sheets, tables and log time...
30yo, just ok with my job but never achieved anything i wanted to... ive been watching tons of the self improvement and went to self diagnosing adhd phase... i probably am.. but it doesn't matter if i dont have system adhd or not...what u talk in the video thats what i saw with everything of combination of self improvement, adhd self "fixing", behavior changing books, cal newport thing etc... they all are too niched in, it wont work for everybody,,, the summary u gave makes perfect sense for an ADHDer especially
@@alialqaraghuli Haaa you wouldn't recognize me lol, we talked maybe a couple of words ever. You sat in the front rows, I was more often in the back haha.
9:50 quite different than the complexity of something like SpaceX, but I often joke with my teammates about intentionally putting out the wrong answer. I work in software sales where we have a lot of dependencies on the product teams to get the right answer to how the software meets a requirement, or if it doesn't out of the box, could it meet the requirement and how. So the "wrong answer" approach is sometimes simply writing something down that is just a "what if we did this?" and sending it out as soon as possible. The joke - and sometimes it's not a joke - is to use it in almost a manipulative way to light a fire under the people you need answers from, i.e., they see what you wrote and say "oh f*** please don't say that to the customer, here's the right answer" lol
thank you so much for sharing! i wish i learned this before i took early retirement 🤣 i had clear goals and priorities for work related stuff but i just never could prioritise stuff that would help progress my career 🙄
This is really helpful to me. I found great value, so i liked and saved rhe video for later. Yes I subscrided for more great contents. I took notes. I'll leave a feedback in 2 months time. I knkw I would have grately improved by then. Thanks a lot.
I think most people get it wrong because they don't understand the obstacle. Even you assume most people have obstacle they need to remove but truth be told, for most people the obstacle is "lack of motivation" and by that I mean they brain chemicals are messed up. Why do bipolar people accomplish great things when they are in the mania state...? Not because they have "special system" in place, but because there is enough dopamine in they brain to make them move around, stay focused, stay energetic and enthusiastic on anything they find themselves doing and at the sama time to be able to multitask and help others with they projects. Of course I am not speaking here of the situation when mania turns into psychosis because there is too much dopamine in the brain, I am simply stating that the obstacle you mention in the video is simply impossible to move for some regardless of if they understand the process or not.

The best thing I have come to understand after living with ADHD and mental health issues: there's more to life than "being productive."
Absolutely!
The video is about productivity, not life lessons.
Agreed, awareness is the first step
Thank you so much! Very happy the video is resonating!
Wow.
Thank you! Glad you found is useful!
Wow, super cool! Thank you so much for sharing this! Subtractive productivity all the way ;)
How do you delete the social media you need for work? This is where I get stuck on the subtract step. Examples: My work uses Whatsapp and Discord for communication, I study RUclips videos for work.
@@wiegraf9009 you can use an extension or app to set a limit time to access social networks and set a time slot to surf them, example 30 minutes or 1 hour per day is enough to update all your social media accounts.

I had a hard time following the explanation for some reason but I think there’s some good advice in there. I scrolled through the comments and found a quick description that helped me understand so I’ll leave a summary here too:
Subtract - Remove obstacles to goal (ie get rid of things that make it harder)
Add + Add support systems (ie identify what makes it easier / what works and do more of that)
Divide / Self-Observe (ie self reflect)
Multiply x Continue process (ie replicate results)
pretty much!
So true. Simplifying and clarifying things helps a lot more with productivity than adding and complicating endlessly.
Thank you brother for sharing this. Very well-articulated, you've clearly put in a lot of effort in this. Subscribed and looking forward to seeing more of your content!
Much appreciated!
Comment for the algorithm.
I came down to very similar conclusions recently but the way you put it in a diagram is amazing
Thank you so much!
"Why can't I do it right now?" Is such an important question to ask yourself. When you can answer this then you are on the right path.
Thanks!
You are so welcome! Glad videos are helping! Stay tuned for more!
I’ve watched your channel throughout my whole schooling. Amazing content as always
Only half way through but this is a refreshing take, gets straight to the point of actually "being* productive 👏🏼👏🏼
Glad you think so!
This man brought out flow charts and talked systems. Nuff said, you just gained me as sub!
A lot more in preparation!
Can't wait!
Glad you found it useful! Stay tuned for more videos :)
Solid advice man. Often the simple and straightforward solutions are the best. My favorite quotes are the simple ones that say a lot with little words:
-Action conquers fear.
-It’s easier to keep up than to catch up.
-Try and fail, but don't fail to try.
-Do more with less.
absolutely
100% August really changed my life
Honestly I never post comments on RUclips but this was the first video that resonated strongly with me.

Thanks! This is exactly what I’ve been thinking about now after completing an accelerated course and realizing even more how my adhd needs simplicity.
absolutely! the two arch enemies of adhd are overwhelm and boredom!
Thanks!!!
Thank you! I did read GTD and found it too complicated and overwhelming, perhaps this is a much simplified verison
I didn't watch the video, but just wanted you to know that I have added it to my "Watch Later"-playlist.
I am sure this'll come in handy when it gets suggested to me again in 3 months from now. Thanks!
Great!
clear and on point
substract is important - and i like my "to not do list", sadly have to to that before most projects as my interests and structures change a lot
for clarity - i like to draft&sketch and imagine how something schould look, and as my working memory is not great i sometimes need to "learn" the steps of the assignment, then i go along the lines of "great artists steal" - i go to image search how a final project/text/task could look, i like chat gpt aswell to formulate me some mock-texts (when i need to do write ups) and i ask chatgpt aswell to present me some kind of schedule and sub-tasks i could do
for execution i mostly start out with rough steps, putting structure and unrefined words/or in physical projects atleast do something
so alot is pareto-oriented with doing the 20% that bring 80% value
Good strategy!
I just got diagnosed with ADHD and I am about to double major in EE and neuroscience. I will use this system and tweak it for my personal life.

@@VidhathShetty Wow, very good feedback, thank you so much! I like the myths idea -- worthy of implementing!
I love you for this video man. Even as a high achiever, I struggle with adhd/productivity.Thank you.

You cooked. This is great advice.
Haha glad it was helpful!
So if you’re like me and maybe dont want to be productive in the traditional sense, i see you and it’s okay to work on being productive in the aspects of life that you want to enjoy but your brain won’t let you >:(
being productive means to me accomplishing things that I want to (and for this you need a clear system). accomplishing things can be my job, or getting to know some things about my mind better or solving a problem I had for several weeks.. it can be anything, even being intentionally lazy and help your soul to get comfortable and really relax better can also be a goal, and if u achieve it, you have been productive, because you produced the solution to that problem. but, for example, if you are skipping from video to video and keep doing that for the whole day instead of trying to use your (morning)time in a more meaningful way (like being productive on at least anything important), then you are not productive. but it doesnt need to be a problem, for example if you are crazy rich and you love to see all videos before you die (jokin). it depends on your personal situation. you decide. but whenever you decided to achieve something, you may or may not need a rock solid system that really works for becoming productive.
i tried so many things...but this is next level for me. This is gonna impact my life in so many ways
Glad you liked it! Stay tuned for more videos!

I need to say that’s one of the most interesting and well done videos on the topic.
I just want to argue that its very clear your “engineer background bias” ahahah
You have this approach of : define a problem , analyze how to solve it in practical manner, how tweak different parameters or reverse engineering all the outcomes. This actually works a lot in daily life and it’s a good thing.
BUT
I have a “psychology background bias” ahahah and I think you didn’t focus enough on emotions .
I am on the spectrum of ADHD and a lot of times little negative feedback from environment can affect my mood and if I don’t stop even for 2 minutes thinking about it , I could be productive but in a bad mood, and things usually are not done at my best.
in my opinion you could have focused more on the role of emotions, that at the end of the day make us humans
If someone will ever read this comment my humble advice is: productivity is strictly related to emotions, even if you lose some time in some days it’s beneficial for you life to feel them, embrace them and never solve them, just grow out of them
My humble protocol that works for myself :
Stop , feel do not analyze , raise your self awareness , be compassionate to yourself and take care, understand that step-by-step you can do everything, trust yourself and the process
Great feedback! I am trying to learn more about emotions right now -- is there a resource you'd recommend?

I have never been able to self-diagnose or identify why is it that I run away from even the simplest of tasks- it's because I procrastinated on tasks that were of higher importance and over the years I started procrastinating on everything. I'm a systems engineering intern and this video was an absolute gem.
cool, which company?
@@alialqaraghuli Trane Technologies
Key point: while Ali worked @ Space-X, engineers set goals to intentionally fail. Failing and learning from these intentional experiments made them iterate and learn @ a 10x speed compared to most other teams & companies who twiddle their thumbs while failing to take action. This means that speed + execution towards a complex goal to intentionally fail is a force multiplier towards success.
spot on!
😭 glad my spirit guide dropped this in my visual field lol 🙏🏼

Thank you so much for this video. I’ve taken notes. Really amazing Allahuma barek. Just one thing, i’m not sure what the « divide » step meant ?
