Kelly: "When I talk about mental illness, I use this analogy - if this scary man was running after you, you would do anything to not let him catch you, but what if you just turn towards him and say: "What do you want!?" and he's like: "I got this letter for you." And you absolutely need it to unlock the secret to your existence, and you would never know that if you just kept running."
Nicole: "We're starting to understand that these bandages just are no longer working."
Kelly: "I finally feel like myself."
Nicole: "The collective is waking up."
Kelly: "Not everyone is called to this process and path."
    🙏🏽❤️

I had a spiritual awakening in my twenties, and when I couldn’t get back into my body-I was too expanded, I ended up admitted to a Psychiatric Hospital. I felt damaged by the experience in that ‘hospital’ for a long time. I was treated like a criminal. But I turned the bitter into the sweet, as they say in Ayurveda. I’ve had a great adventurous life. That experience feels like another lifetime-just part of a story.
We are looking at our problems from the level of thinking that caused them, to quote Einstein loosely. We are at the precipice of a huge shift in experiencing the world. Thanks for your eloquent discussion.

I do have the feeling that; I have committed myself to learning about my chronic posttraumatic stress disorder diagnosis, coupled with chronic spinal pain nerve diagnosis. Which would leave me crippled and suffering for the rest of my life. I immediately laughed, I knew that that was not the choice I was going to make! And, I was amazed at how many people were making that choice, so I told myself that I would make sure, that I HEALED myself, and I started to be my own “guinea pig” I tried every alternative, holistic & native American medicine teachings that my family has had for centuries, and it was all from oral history. So I literally had to find the tools, create the tools, then he’ll myself. I learned how to prepare myself, and healed such a primary aspect of my life that I am now moving forward, I’m looking at other avenues of helping myself grow even more! And to share this growth with others. I am on board with every single story you have ever shared! I constantly let my people know that you are honest🙏

This video was gold! I am a huge fan of you both. Kelly, A Mind of Your Own honestly rocked my clinical foundation. As a consumer of meds (hated them!), and a therapist, it's comforting to know my beliefs about medications are validated. I was prescribed antidepressants by my gyno without ever being asked about my symptoms, or the "why." I became borderline addicted to Xanax, yet continued to struggle with symptoms. I also see this in my work. I spent 2 1/2 years working in an acute mental health unit, where our number one goal was med compliance. I now work as a mental health clinician in the prisons, and see pills being prescribed daily, yet these individuals continue to struggle with increased symptoms. I believe with every ounce of my being that medication acts as a numbing tool. I don't blame society for this either. I believe people are not educated in alternatives, and seek help from the "experts." They lack self-efficacy in knowing they are fact the expert. You both seriously rock my world, and I am so thankful to have you both as my unofficial mentors. One day I hope to have the opportunity to speak with you both. Keep doing big things! The world needs it.

I don’t full agree. Medication isn’t a “numbing” tool, but rather a “tool” if used properly. It can be very beneficial for those, like myself, who has done years of mindfulness meditation practice as well as talk therapy. And still there is some persistance with OCD and PMDD symptoms. It’s important not to shame others for using medication as just another tool in the tool box. As long as there are options, everyone’s journey to self-healing is their own.

This conversation makes me so happy! One of the greatest misconceptions I hear from my clients is that they aren't intuitive (they use the word "psychic," which is fine); that intuition is for the "gifted." When I tell them we're all intuitive/psychic and that they're fully capable of doing what I do, I can tell they so want to believe that of themselves. And when it's appropriate to guide them through an exercise that tunes them into their intuitive "yes" and "no" responses activated through their body wisdom, it can be mind-blowing for them. (It can also be "scary" because there's a sense of responsibility and accountability that comes with that level of self-awareness.) Fascinating and important stuff. xoxo

I discovered that the culprit for my vertigo was coffee. Had I visited a Dr for the vertigo, God knows where I would be now! That's for the body.
And for the mind, you need a life time to explain to a therapist what has happened to you in every moment of your life!!!! YOU were there, YOU observed everything, YOU experienced everything. It's absolutely impossible that the therapist can know more than you. You are the best therapist for yourself. After being educated of course.

I absolutley love this. The medical industry has failed me so many times over the last 20 years. I am a chronic lyme disease sufferer and all I got was 2 weeks of antibiotics at age 11 (which did not work), years and years of Paxil, Celexa, Zoloft, Accutane, birth control, and finally the absolute worst which hospitalized me, Klonopin. I only realized the truth not too long ago through a holistic doc who tested me and found so many things wrong due to the untreated Lyme (i.e Lyme, Bartonella, Candida, Pernicious Anemia, hormonal imbalances, etc). I'm going to my new holistic doc this Spring 🙌🙌🙌

Dr. Brogan, you and Dr. Jordan Peterson catalyzed my decision to become a clinician who is blending holistic functional approaches with depth psychology. I am also inspired to create coursework for those in the mental health field who want to understand microbiome, food sensitivities and neuroinflammation link to symptoms often diagnosed as mental health disease. I am midway listening to this and I just want to let you know what an amazing conversation and podcast this is. Thank you ladies!! You two are both intelligent and bring a refreshing look.
As for myself, sure I have been at my lowest point. I was heavily medicated after being hospitalized 2-3 times. The medications for bipolar and schizo-affective disorder made me gain weight, depressed, cranky, irritable and downright miserable if not sedated 24/7 with lethargy and zombie like feelings.
I understand people genuinely need help and these meds may do wonders. Then again people who rely on easy fixes of meds don't want to face their inner demons, don't want to change their negative self-talk, don't want to improve their diet and most importantly don't want to exercise.
Anyway, after 10 years of being heavily medicated, I had had enough. I saw through the modern psychiatry industry.. and that's exactly what it is - an industry- for the sham it is. They are less concerned about healing than paranoid about losing "customers".
Now I am off meds. Stable. Making small living. Leading pretty normal life. I don't have mania or episodes or any egregious psychotic anomalies. I merely stumbled upon this video searching "How to own yourself" as I feel as long as I don't honor my own self and emotions and validate my Self for the being who I truly am, Universe will keep sh**-shoveling c**p on me.
    So glad found this video!!

Such an interessting topic. When I was twenty my doctor described me the wrong medicine and got really ill for 4 years, I had an operation and it took me two more years to recover. First I was very mad and dissapointed, but I also learned that I have the responsibility for my own wellbeing. I still go to doctors, but I see their advice as a suggestion and love to do my own research and hear a second and sometimes third opinion. I am always well prepared when I visit a doctor have a lots of questions... To be honest some hate that a lot. But thats okay, I don't like authoritian doctors. I would trust them so much more when they would say things like: "I don't know, I have to look that up/ ask a colleague/inform myself... ", or "we will make a plan together how to handle it the best way", or "there a different solutions, I prefere to do it this way ... and this is why...".
I also think that there is always a good reason for every symptom or illness and its is a good start to look what can be this reason in my life.

Why does it have to be a scary man? Couldn't it be a frightening woman? I would've guessed that was a Freudian slip of sorts, but you're much aware. Why choose those words? Many men are terrified of women. Women can fuck men up really, really bad, and often do.. No one ever talks about this, why!? Are men not able to be victimized? Or does society want it both ways where by, men are suppose to be men? Am I mistakenly taking your tone to sound slightly tinged with anger? To me, that is a very masculine quality. So I keep listening. You have something meaningful to assert.

Watching around 35 minutes of this video i suddenly realized, that MD Kelly is actually a psychiatryst. Such a dissapointment. Eventhough she is talking all the good things, it's like listening to a former rapist how to love and be kind - not a reliebale source. I've experienced on myself all the force of this system and psychiatry, and know for sure, they are just pathetic creatures, only causing missery. Just delusional pshychopaths.
