There are only two level crossings on the main lines in Sydney, both in Fairfield with this one at North Street and the other one at Pine Road. The Quakers Hill one was removed in 1997. The one at Mascot was removed not that long ago along with Parramatta Road. There is never a need for a large-scale level crossing removal program like in Melbourne. Most people would never remember the ones at St. Marys, Como, and Concord West. There was one in Bridge Street Tempe with the gatekeeper's cottage still standing but that one has been gone since 1924 with another at Frederick Street Rockdale taken away at the same time.
Agree - in the absence of double container stacking which we wont see in Sydney, one would assume freight improvements to be on the motive power and length of train.

It’s interesting how most freight trains are very similar to todays but the passenger trains have seen major improvement
