It definitely grew on me. When I stopped having expectations of what I thought it should be and just let go and listened to it for what it was I loved it.
If you liked this one, please listen to Moon Above, Sun Below from the same album. A longer track (almost 11mn) but its an amazing one ! Can't remember if you listened to it, but Eternal Rains Will Come, the opening track of the album, is really great also !
I liked seeing this one pop up. It's one of the happiest sounding Opeth songs to start, then it gets strange and funky and goes kind of crazy at the end. Like a lot of prog stuff, there's that weird experience in the first time listen where you can't predict where its going and changes and new sections can really leave you behind. But it's figuring out the song with repeat listens that makes it so much more enjoyable.
I've been saying for a long time that 'River' is one of my favorite Opeth tracks, very underrated in my opinion, a song most folks don't talk about. When she mentions the intro/beginning of the song reminds her of Crosby, Stills and Nash...I've always felt that way as well, it's the folksy acoustic guitar and definitely the harmonized vocals. So good! Parts of the song also remind me of The Allman Brothers. It is very progressive, 70's influenced. Glad you guys finally checked this one out.
I've been a fan of them since '97 and I love everything they've released, but I had MAJOR issues with "new Opeth" for about 3-4 years. I finally realized the error of my ways when I gave them one more chance while I was renovating an apartment and in need of something to make it less silent around me and to my surprise all the bits suddenly fell in place🙂 That's actually happened with other bands/albums as well. I think working and not fully focusing on the music for some reason helps me get more into it🤨
I still prefer heavy Opeth, but I put on their last 4 albums while playing Elden Ring, doing repetitive boring farming for items, and the music helped make it so much more enjoyable. That game had so many great moments but just killing rats over and over again is somehow one of my favorite memories thanks to Opeth.
Not really country, at least not what I think of. It's more like what they said, folk music. Both genres often use acoustic guitars but folk goes for a softer, prettier sound usually. Country is closer to rock and usually has silly lyrics about beer and trucks and women.
I know the current opeth sound doesn't appeal to everyone, but fuck I think it's epic.

All opeth is goodpeth
Seemed like they tried finding their sound with Heritage but then found it with Pale Communion. Absolute masterpiece of an album.

I'm gonna go ahead and second this recommendation.
yess, pale communion is so good

This whole album sounds about the same genre wise, it was such a departure when it released but ive grown to absolutely love it. Thank you guys!!
My favorite song on the album🕊
So folksy and bluegrass in the beginning, then prog supreme to finish.
Such a cool piece of work!🧙♂🤘💀🖤
YES! I've requested this one loads of times. One of their most overlooked and underrated songs of all time.
Finally a Pale Communion reaction. ❤
Howdy y'all! Thanks for showing Opeth so much love! Y'all should try some Burial in the Sky or Oceans of Slumber next :)
Yes Oceans of slumber is incredibly good

Master level prog indeed. :D Love this album.
Sounded like a little Zappa,a!ittleYes,a little Pink Floyd little Deep Purple etc but all Opeth!
Moon above sun Below from the same record. Folklore from Heritage record
The whole Pale Communion album is a masterpiece.
7:04 is one of the most dark sounding parts of any music ive ever listened to.
The rabbit hole continues
What a jam
I've listened to Opeth since the late 1990s.
My favorite post-Watershed Opeth track

🥰🎶
First time I heard the first third of this song, I thought "Wait. Opeth has a folk rock song?"
epic old prog rock sound
They went full on Kingston Wall.
I think this album is as proggy as they will ever get
This song seems like a take on American country music, with a prog rock slant. Imho

@@Childofbhaal Still sounds like Jethro Tull to me.
