    Opeth - Isolation years isn’t just sad, it’s gloomy and depressing. But lovely !!!

    I love this song. I always say that opening a song with a drum fill is the absolutely best way to do it. And THAT drum solo is Axenrot burning brightly!!! ANd of course, the sad, gloomy break, it's so beautiful and haunting.

    Mikael has said this was the most personal lyrics he has written, and he said it was too personal. The song starts to shine when you know the backstory. You can hear the feeling throughout the song, especially 2:47 is a powerful moment in its honesty. I don't usually connect or even listen to Opeth lyrics but this song is different to me. The music video emphasizes the story even though the song is shortened.

  • @Henriktranoy
    @Henriktranoy 2 года назад +13

    If you are making an "anti-valentine" playlist, you should check out "Hope leaves". Not explicitly about love, but the lyrics fits and might very well be about "heartbreak".
    And a newer one, "Ingen sanning är allas" is explicitly about someone who can't accept that his love have left him, and he is drowning in despair, anger and delusion. English translation is "universal truth", but I'm not to familiar with how the message is conveyed there (as the music video makes what's going on clear, it will be along the same lines).
    That being said. I freaking Love Porcelain Heart! Such a good song. I love the mood.

    It's not your guy on keyboards it's the previous keyboardist Per Wiberg, who was only with them for this "Watershed" album. Your guy Joachim Svalberg joined on the following album "Heritage". Also on drums on this album is Martin Axenrot, and this was his first album drumming with Opeth. The previous drummer was Martin Lopez. This song is a true story of how Mickael left his girlfriend and she subsequently committed suicide. Very deep and sad song lyrically.

    Another great reaction, as usual. Lauren, your next Opeth song should be Coil & Heir Apparent. Both songs together (the first one is really short and has a BIG SURPRISE that is unique in all Opeth´s discograpy)

  • @FugglesRift

    really enjoying your opeth reactions. seeing your genuine reactions help me and I'm sure others relive the musical discovery that is opeth. you can never go back to who you were before you heard those last few final piano notes on hessian peel building the tension before Mikael kick the door in with the "demon voice" but seeing someone else discover it for the first time is pretty close!
    Its tough just reacting to one song at a time! this song is preceded by burden and followed by hessian peel, so epic!. everyone has certain emotional attachments to music for their own reasons but this album in particular speaks to the pain still buried in my heart tied to a separation/divorce that coincidentally began in April (i lost all i had one april day).
    Keep at it, there is a mountain of amazing music to go through but its worth it, there are absolute gems on every album they have made. in no particular order amazing songs from albums other than blackwater/ghosts/watershed:
    deliverance, will o the wisp, chrysalis, spring MCMLXXIV, faith in others, All things will pass, in my time of need, next of kin, when, credence, i feel the dark, the lines in my hand, to bid you farewell.
    also i saw on a previous video mention of them as being underrated, i dunno. people who know, know opeth is an 11. there is all other music, then there is opeth. this type of music will never be popular so maybe under-discovered or under-appreciated is more appropriate. its not something you can have on in the background, it doesnt already sound familiar, it doesnt even sound the same one album to the next! you have to stop what your doing, take time out and just listen.

    • @MusicCatsandCoffee
      @MusicCatsandCoffee  2 года назад

      Yes, yes, good point. Underrated was not the best word for that. Just speaking from my own experience, I couldn't believe I had never heard of them. That's what I was getting at. The Lotus Eater is the next one. Should be posted next week! :)

    I think you will love "Isolation Years" and "In My Time of Need" from them. Not exactly anti love songs but mostly about lost love and despair and both have only clean vocals. Mikael's vocals are gorgeous (duh!!) and compositionally they are two of the more straightforward songs.
    Also, I wonder why you don't react to Dream Theatre. Especially since you love keyboard guy and they have one of best (and one of the best guitarist, drummer and bassist too). Their vocals while fully clean, doesn't always do it for me but still enjoys many of their songs because of the great song writing and technical wizardry

    Just found your channel today and binged my way through most of the Opeth videos! If you like keyboard and drums then you should really consider checking out Dream Theater.
    I'd recommend Panic Attack or Constant Motion for an introduction, then maybe move on to one of their epics like Octavarium or Count of Tuscany to see what kind of a journey they can really take you on.
    They even have an insane 42 minute long track called 6 Degrees of Inner Turbulence that might just be the single most amazing song I've ever heard.

  • @Croneth
    @Croneth 2 года назад +7

    Still annoyed that some people chose this as the "Anti-Valentines" track, there are so many good tracks by them that actually fit this bill. Chrysalis is less depressive and more of a rebellious/angry track with the lyrics assumed to be directed to his ex-wife. Ending with this vulnerable and reassuring verse directed more to himself. Then there is the Damnation album that has a myriad of very depressing yet beautiful songs, Hope Leaves, In My Time of Need etc. Porcelain Heart is a good song but just an awful pick for this theme.

    This song is one of the very few they've actually made a music video for with themselves in. It's a shorter version of this song so it's not the one you'd want to react to, but might be interesting to check it out. It's not the greatest - and Mikael has said that it was a mainly thing their publisher told them to do - but still interesting.
