Final Voyage is the one that gave me that tingly feeling in my head. After grabbing the [REDACTED] and heading for [REDACTED], you hear the song that fills you with dread start up, only to realise it's telling you that this is it, it's about to be over and you can't mess up because, well, y'know.
Yeah the first time i did the thing, this music started playing so i though the other thing was about to happen so i freaked out and messed up lol, luckily the game lets you load your previous save if that happens.
The only thing better than that one is the remixed theme for the Echoes of the Eye finale. That whole scene slaps me with the feels every time I see it.

i think its important to note that Timber Hearth starts playing when the sun breaches the horizon, and plays until it sets, and than it's silent until the sun rises again. The cricket-type sounds near the end kinda make it feel like a summer evening as the sun slowly sets. It's really amazing to experience.
Outer Wilds is the only game that I've played in my adult life, that equals or surpasses my favourite games from my childhood. It's a game I feel hugely nostalgic about, even if I played it only 2 years ago. I felt nostalgic about it the day I finished it.
I played it 4 or so days ago and I'm already nostalgic for it! Has been one of my best games ever played as well, rivalling my childhood memories like crash bandicoot and recent ones like Tunic, A Link To The Past, and coincidentally, Majora's Mask, which I had finished a week before playing Outer Wilds
The moment you finish the game you're filled with this sense of finality. You've done everything, there's nothing left to explore, and you know in your heart that you'll never be able to experience this again.
I cannot understate just how good this game is, but especially important is how well placed these songs are for the game. For example, I believe the first time you hear Space is when you first lift off into space, feeling the roots of something you'd hear live into a space theme over time to signify the loss of terrestrial footing

Streamer says “someone could make objectively the best video game ever invented, I don’t think you’d ever like it as much as the video games you played as a kid” right after listening to the soundtrack of the game that many many people objectively think is the best game ever made which also happens to be the game that taught me how wrong that statement could be despite believing it all the way into my adult life. Go play Outer Wilds. The context for this music only makes it that much more incredible. The famous example being The Sun Station being the reverse of The Search. Without going into spoilery detail, one represents everything a people stood for, while the other was, well, the reverse. Heck the game itself is a love letter to the fact that music brings us together despite time and distance. Worth playing to find out why.
@@alexblickhan5175 out ears are not accustomed to that reverse sound, and it is pretty subtle since sun station is also alot slower than the search I do recommend listening to them back to back, you can much more easily and clearly see it ::)

Outer Wilds at 4:40 means so much to me. One of the first things my now wife and I did was play this together. I'd watch her do that puzzles and drift off. So hearing that always just reminds me of her, and that makes me smile.
Greatest game of all time. And I’ve played a lot of the ones that usually make up that list. Absolutely nothing makes you feel the things this game makes you feel. Nothing has this kind of journey and discovery. An treasure. And the eternal answer to the question: “can video games be art?”….Yes
If and ONLY IF it's your type of game. For me it's totally that type of game and its up there in the best games of all time for me as well. That being said it's definitely not everyone's cup of tea game. I don't think anyone can argue how EXTREMELY WELL MADE it is though. The level of care and attention to detail is absolutely mind blowing regardless of if the game is your type of game.
Outer Wilds and Disco Elysium were so good that I felt profoundly sad that they were over. Haven't felt that since first finishing Ocarina of Time or FF7 in the 90's.
It isn't possible for me to hear this music without crying. It's difficult to even place why. Emotion just wells up within me, and tears come. Sadness doesn't quite describe the feeling. Highly intense nostalgia, perhaps.
I am actually opposite. Everytime I hear this music, I crack up. This song somehow slaps giant big smile on my face everytime I hear it. Big smile, with a hint of tear. The sense that I saw something so beautiful, have finished something so great, and seen an end of something so majestic. This game.....is so amazing. Not a hint of blood, not a teaspoon of violence, and yet.....It's so scary and peaceful and beautiful at its peak. It's adventurous, and yet it feels like home. I can't describe how much I love this game...
For me it's a bittersweet feeling of loss. This game is the perfect embodiment of the phrase: "Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened."
My favorite part about Reprise, and why it works so damn well, is that the song opens immediately with “End Times”. Kinda signifying that the game may be over and you can never experience the game the same way again, but that doesn’t mean that it has to be the end of the wilds. Life goes on, even if you’re not there to witness it. Very beautiful message. A very retrospective and introspective kind of song.
god i love the way The Ash Twin Project parallels what the player must be feeling. the melody sounds jumbled, and confused, and anxious but the percussion marches on, determined to go where it needs to
End Times is such a powerful song. Then hearing that theme echoed in the final voyage was so chilling. This whole soundtrack is powerful. Holy moly this game is a true masterpiece.
Hearing how close your analyses came to how each track relates to the story has opened my eyes to just _how_ deliberate Prahlow's compositions are. He practically tells the story just through the music, even when you know nothing about the story. Lot of things I hadn't noticed before, and got a little bit of education on theory too!
If there was one game I'd love to experience for the first time again, it's Outer Wilds. An absolute masterpiece of a game and of a game design :) You won't find anything like it.
I went into Outerwilds with my only knowledge of it being that it was the game that people kept getting Outer Worlds confused with when it came out. I only bought the game cause I was bored and it was on sale. I was so absolutely blown away by this game. There are few things that I have experienced that have ever given me the feelings that I now hold towards this game.
I love how while the Nomai civilization is represented thematically by the timbre of the piano, "The Sun Station" is dotted with these reverse piano notes that seem to be in disarray. Those who've played that game knows why this symbolism is so fitting.
SPOILER for the game: IIRC, the piano from the sun station is the southern observatory piano reversed. It symbolise the moment the Nomai went "too far" in their quest for the Eye (by trying to blow up the Sun) and kinda lost their way.
My favorite game of all time. OST is simply perfect, even more so when playing, it really sets the mood perfectly for whatever is happening in game. Highly recommend listening to Echoes of the Eye, it's very different and amazing too.
I started playing this game yesterday so this stream came on a perfect timing. The game so far makes you feel so lost but relaxed, the calmness of the music immerses and attaches you to a world and universe you've never seen before, but love and care for already. Big props to Andrew Pharlow for such an amazing soundtrack, and thanks so much to you for the analysis. As always it's really appreciated! Best of luck ^^
Finished it recently :), took a while but we got there in the end. I'll probably think about this game for years, I don't think anything has come close to the exorbitant experience I had during the last events of the game, just listening to the music again made me emotional
I almost hate to admit this... but just those first opening guitar notes get tears welling up in my eyes. The score for this is so beautiful and a perfect accompaniment for (and an integral part of) the greatest and most meaningful game I have ever played.
There are videos of him working on the theme here on YT, and it took a long while and a lot of adjustments to get it just right. Clearly a work of passion.
Outer Wilds literally gave me a whole new perspective on life and it is something i will cherish forever. Everyone’s already said it but i cant not join in by saying to everyone with or without an explorer’s soul, play this game. Please just set aside a bit of time one night with a hot drink and go in with out knowing what to expect, just enjoy the ride. Honestly the fact that you can appreciate the beauty of the music without ever having played the game really speaks to just how amazing the OST is. PLEASE play this game. As beautiful as the OST is, it really is just one component to a masterpiece.
I’m a bit late to this, but fun fact! 14.3 Billion years later includes new string instruments to directly correlate to the game and its theme. All the classic instruments like the banjo, harmonica, and so on are replaced to display the sense of “moving on” and letting go as the game portrays. Andrew Prahlow really made a masterpiece with this one!
it's really interesting how the acoustic instruments are related to the rustic civilization/species you're from, while the mysterious ominous synths are related to the remains of the more advanced civilization that vanished, it makes a great parallel that fits perfectly with what is going on
one thing that's super powerful about 14.3 billion years is that it's the first time bowed instruments have made an appearance in the ost at all. it really feels like the start of something new, but it's still playing that core melody; not everything has changed

You have to do Echos of the eye next. You wouldn't be able to tell out the outer wilds music is "missing something" something that echoes of the eyes fills and it's almost impossible not to notice once you've heard it
So happy to see so many people in comments recommending this game. It is my favorite game ever. The story is just.... insane and smart and WOW. I've never had an end to a game make me so sad yet so happy and feel existential crisis. I wish I could erase my memory to experience this game all over again.
I forget which track, but one of them there are dueling guitars/banjos, the developer said this was his past and future self playing the same song over the 4-5 years of development. Both recordings (4-5 years apart from one another) were used in the same track showing his growth in learning how to play over the course of the game's development.
Me as I search through the comments to see if Andrew's watched this one yet and left a comment. Such a talented down to earth guy. It's also worth noting that some of the music pieces are used to indicate things happening in the game. The game uses sound and music in these ways as actual game mechanics, which to me is just super cool. I also believe Andrew was involved with the game early in development, so he was able to build these pieces as the game itself and the story was being created.
I still haven't finished this game, but the emotions this games music invokes in me are absolutely wonderful. I actually bought this game because I was gonna buy outer worlds, but when searching on steam for it I saw outer wilds in the pull down menu and decided to give this game I had never heard of a shot. Beautiful game.
I still really enjoyed The Outer Worlds, and the sequel is probably my most anticipated game? not sure, but this game is better, undeniably. It’s so beautiful in its essence, purely driven by curiosity, only checkpoint is your own knowledge, with such an intricately made tiny solar system to explore and learn the story of its inhabitants in. Games like these can’t be made by AAA developers, it’s so tied with it’s indie identity, and while having more to do, more lines of dialogue, would be nice, it’d also rob it of its identity slightly Somehow the DLC completely lives up to the original too
Hope you are on the path to finish it. It is actually a full experience. You can also choose to complete the dlc before ending the game( which is canonical). The dlc basically adds a location to the base game and adds to the story and the ending. But the game and the dlc both hold on their own.
@@devverma144 I don't think doing the dlc before the original game is a good idea. Some of the scenes in it wouldn't be as impactful. I'd do the original story, take a break for a while then return for the dlc
I didn't shed a tear when my first real girlfriend left me, I didn't cry when my fist love committed suicide, I didn't cry at my own mother's funeral, but this game brought me closer to that feeling that makes your eyes well up than anything else. They were all sad, but this hit me closer to my core than anything else. A totally unreal soundtrack
Your comment resonates with me a lot. I am the same way for the most part but when it came to this game and the story and the music it just breaks me down more than anything else. For me it's because it reinforces the idea that no matter what happens in our lives we are just a single speck and any of us have the ability in us to change the course of the universe.. or do nothing.. or run. It's a reality check that reminds you that there is infinitely more than what you are and what you see.
i really love the observation at 35:00 about "things are happening" because in a strange way that's true, but perhaps not the way you might expect. this track "emenates" from certain rocks in the game, and kinda drowns out the music nearby, and not because something intense requires the player's attention, but rather the player is invited to pay closer attention to their surroundings, because these rocks are "quantum entangled", which in the game means they teleport between certain specific locations when they aren't "seen" (something that's easily missed if you're distracted by the music ;) ). something i feel might be interesting to add btw is more commentary on how you feel the music might be used in the game, like what it's role might be or when it might play. like, as someone who has played the game it's obvious what the context is in the game, but it'd be interesting (to me at least) to get a sense of what context you would place it in based on the music alone.
Outer Wilds is one of the most emotional soundtracks in indie games out there. Andrew Prahlow stayed with development from the near beginning, slowly refining the music over time to become attuned into the game's atmosphere, creating one of the most beautiful soundtracks ever. If you ever play any of these games apart from listening to the soundtrack, I highly suggest this game.

outer wilds is one of those rare games that was a work of art from the ground up. many games are made to be fun. but not many of them are made to be ART from the ground up.
I've loved Outer Wilds for a couple years now, and especially it's music. And only now did I make the connection between the reversed notes and sounds, to the actual gameplay. It took the final one in End Times for me to finally realize.
Travelers is just something else it always brings me to tears because of what the song meant when I heard it for the first time, I dont think I was sad about the outcome I was just sad I had to let the game end, I didnt want to let go. Outerwilds is a truly what you call a masterpiece in gaming.
Into the wilds feels to me like a summary of the whole journey we've gone thru, from a cozy beginnig inside timber hearth to the knowledge of our terrible fate, followed by the end of everything but this not being necessarilly terrifying or sad, but actually beautifull, and one last time the theme of timber hearth reminding us that life goes on somewhere else
I 100%-ed this game but this was my first time listening to the whole OST through. A few of these songs don't ever play in game so this was a very good video even though I had already played it.
14.3 billion years still gets me. its hard to go back and play the game again but i can still listen to this song and relive my first time sitting there watching the end credits roll
Andrew Prahlow is my favorite composer of all time. His music just hits different in all the right ways, and flows perfectly with the game that it’s built for. Sometimes it almost feels like the soundtrack was made first and then they made gameplay that fit the tone of the music.

@@themightymcb7310 spoilers: It's both, it's long after the Nomai's apocalypse, the Ghost Matter explosion which wiped out their species in an instant. The game is about exploring their ruins and discovering what they left behind. That definitely makes the setting post-apocalyptic. But ov course at the same time it's apocalyptic for us since the sun explodes So it's post-apocalyptic in reference to the Nomai and regular apocalyptic for us
The best part about Travellers is that, in all cases, it's Diagetic. Each of those instruments that fades in belongs to a different person, who joins the song on your cue (in one instance). One of these fellow travelers is present on every planet, and with your listening device you can hear them fade in and out of the harmony as the planets align.
the music is truly part of a cohesive whole that includes the gameplay and visuals. playing the game or watching it played is the best way to experience the music

PLEASE DO THE DLC OST With that out of the way, I think you explaining the bass at 7:25 just speaks to how much this soundtrack means to me. Although the main melody is definitely emotional, as soon as you played those first notes from the bassline, I felt like a truck hit my emotional processing centre.

So I’m now just hearing the tiniest hint of [REDACTED]’s motif in the title track. Which would mean that EotE has been a plan from the very beginning. Edit: Sun Station will always be one of my favorites because there’s this “braying” or “winding down” sound in the background that just feels like some old siren or alarm baked into the music to portray the scene of a facility on the brink of destruction.
When I first made the revelation on there, I was so distraught that I just... Sat down. I just watched the station fall into the sun, I was heartbroken. That theme reflects the pure essence of helplessness to me.
I have Timber Hearth as my wake up alarm. It always brings me back to centre. This is life and this is where it all begins. Now I just need to get on with life one more day before the next.
I know other people are already saying it, but I also wanted to say it. I get so emotional during the Travelers -> Let There Be Light -> 14.3 Billion Years -> Morning part of this soundtrack. Something about this music just brings those emotions I felt while playing this game way back in 2019 back up to the surface and It's amazing. I saw there was a lot of confusion in the chat after you asked: The Uncertainty Principle is related to quantum physics, and the general jist of it is that with particles that have quantum properties (like electrons and light particles), you can never measure both their position and their speed at once. You can only ever know one or the other, not because of a limitation of our tech, but just as a natural consequence of how the math works. _To my knowledge,_ which is admittedly pretty limited, that's not related to String Theory. The thing you were describing sounds like maybe Quantum Entaglement? That one is harder to explain, though, I recommend just checking some youtube videos. I think Veritaseum had a good one, and Sixty Symbols definitely has something good about it as well. (I also feel compelled to point out that while Outer Wilds features quantum-stuff, it's more _inspired_ by IRL physics than a direct reference.) Anyways, hoo boy. This game, this OST, I.... I barely have the words. Run from spoilers, run. It is a mistery puzzle game, knowledge is both story and gameplay here. If anyone reading this comment has the chance to play it and listen to the music with the added context, I strongly suggest you do so. It is one of the best games ever made, and it is not hyperbole to say it is a foundational piece of media for who I am as a person.
The Sun Station is one of the most beautiful tracks I've ever heard. It plays when you find Idaea's skeleton sitting in the Sun Station contemplating the sun, one of the saddest moments for me.

Outer Wilds is the only game that I've played in my adult life, that equals or surpasses my favourite games from my childhood. It's a game I feel hugely nostalgic about, even if I played it only 2 years ago. I felt nostalgic about it the day I finished it.
I played it 4 or so days ago and I'm already nostalgic for it! Has been one of my best games ever played as well, rivalling my childhood memories like crash bandicoot and recent ones like Tunic, A Link To The Past, and coincidentally, Majora's Mask, which I had finished a week before playing Outer Wilds
I finished the dlc yesterday. Already nostalgic.. especially the music
You just put in words what I was struggling to explain to people. I love to think that Outer wilds is the main game for this chapter in my life.

I cannot understate just how good this game is, but especially important is how well placed these songs are for the game. For example, I believe the first time you hear Space is when you first lift off into space, feeling the roots of something you'd hear live into a space theme over time to signify the loss of terrestrial footing
I had trouble flying with my first flight and I rammed into the sun because I thought I was going forwards but I was going backwards

‘A Terrible Fate’ plays when you accidentally rupture the fabric of spacetime with a single button press. Pretty comical.

Streamer says “someone could make objectively the best video game ever invented, I don’t think you’d ever like it as much as the video games you played as a kid” right after listening to the soundtrack of the game that many many people objectively think is the best game ever made which also happens to be the game that taught me how wrong that statement could be despite believing it all the way into my adult life.
Go play Outer Wilds. The context for this music only makes it that much more incredible. The famous example being The Sun Station being the reverse of The Search. Without going into spoilery detail, one represents everything a people stood for, while the other was, well, the reverse. Heck the game itself is a love letter to the fact that music brings us together despite time and distance. Worth playing to find out why.

Greatest game of all time. And I’ve played a lot of the ones that usually make up that list. Absolutely nothing makes you feel the things this game makes you feel. Nothing has this kind of journey and discovery. An treasure. And the eternal answer to the question: “can video games be art?”….Yes
If and ONLY IF it's your type of game. For me it's totally that type of game and its up there in the best games of all time for me as well. That being said it's definitely not everyone's cup of tea game. I don't think anyone can argue how EXTREMELY WELL MADE it is though. The level of care and attention to detail is absolutely mind blowing regardless of if the game is your type of game.
Outer Wilds and Disco Elysium were so good that I felt profoundly sad that they were over. Haven't felt that since first finishing Ocarina of Time or FF7 in the 90's.
Journey and Shadow of the Colossus are just ahead imo, but it's honestly not by much.

It isn't possible for me to hear this music without crying. It's difficult to even place why. Emotion just wells up within me, and tears come. Sadness doesn't quite describe the feeling. Highly intense nostalgia, perhaps.
I am actually opposite. Everytime I hear this music, I crack up. This song somehow slaps giant big smile on my face everytime I hear it. Big smile, with a hint of tear. The sense that I saw something so beautiful, have finished something so great, and seen an end of something so majestic.
This game.....is so amazing. Not a hint of blood, not a teaspoon of violence, and yet.....It's so scary and peaceful and beautiful at its peak. It's adventurous, and yet it feels like home. I can't describe how much I love this game...

For me it's a bittersweet feeling of loss. This game is the perfect embodiment of the phrase:
"Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened."
My favorite part about Reprise, and why it works so damn well, is that the song opens immediately with “End Times”. Kinda signifying that the game may be over and you can never experience the game the same way again, but that doesn’t mean that it has to be the end of the wilds. Life goes on, even if you’re not there to witness it. Very beautiful message. A very retrospective and introspective kind of song.
That's partly why OW fans live on vicariously watching other players play it for the first time

End Times is such a powerful song. Then hearing that theme echoed in the final voyage was so chilling. This whole soundtrack is powerful. Holy moly this game is a true masterpiece.

Man, I was really just vibin until 14.3 Billion Years started playing and I immediately started tearing up. Gosh this soundtracks just hits you.
Hearing how close your analyses came to how each track relates to the story has opened my eyes to just _how_ deliberate Prahlow's compositions are.
He practically tells the story just through the music, even when you know nothing about the story.
Lot of things I hadn't noticed before, and got a little bit of education on theory too!
If there was one game I'd love to experience for the first time again, it's Outer Wilds. An absolute masterpiece of a game and of a game design :) You won't find anything like it.
I went into Outerwilds with my only knowledge of it being that it was the game that people kept getting Outer Worlds confused with when it came out.
I only bought the game cause I was bored and it was on sale.
I was so absolutely blown away by this game. There are few things that I have experienced that have ever given me the feelings that I now hold towards this game.
I love how while the Nomai civilization is represented thematically by the timbre of the piano, "The Sun Station" is dotted with these reverse piano notes that seem to be in disarray.
Those who've played that game knows why this symbolism is so fitting.
SPOILER for the game:
IIRC, the piano from the sun station is the southern observatory piano reversed. It symbolise the moment the Nomai went "too far" in their quest for the Eye (by trying to blow up the Sun) and kinda lost their way.

My favorite game of all time. OST is simply perfect, even more so when playing, it really sets the mood perfectly for whatever is happening in game. Highly recommend listening to Echoes of the Eye, it's very different and amazing too.
I started playing this game yesterday so this stream came on a perfect timing. The game so far makes you feel so lost but relaxed, the calmness of the music immerses and attaches you to a world and universe you've never seen before, but love and care for already.
Big props to Andrew Pharlow for such an amazing soundtrack, and thanks so much to you for the analysis.

I'll probably think about this game for years, I don't think anything has come close to the exorbitant experience I had during the last events of the game, just listening to the music again made me emotional
I almost hate to admit this... but just those first opening guitar notes get tears welling up in my eyes. The score for this is so beautiful and a perfect accompaniment for (and an integral part of) the greatest and most meaningful game I have ever played.
The composer for this game is an actual master at his craft
There are videos of him working on the theme here on YT, and it took a long while and a lot of adjustments to get it just right. Clearly a work of passion.
Outer Wilds literally gave me a whole new perspective on life and it is something i will cherish forever. Everyone’s already said it but i cant not join in by saying to everyone with or without an explorer’s soul, play this game. Please just set aside a bit of time one night with a hot drink and go in with out knowing what to expect, just enjoy the ride. Thank you Outer Wilds, truly my favourite game of all time and one of the greatest games ever made.

I’m a bit late to this, but fun fact! 14.3 Billion years later includes new string instruments to directly correlate to the game and its theme. All the classic instruments like the banjo, harmonica, and so on are replaced to display the sense of “moving on” and letting go as the game portrays. Andrew Prahlow really made a masterpiece with this one!
it's really interesting how the acoustic instruments are related to the rustic civilization/species you're from, while the mysterious ominous synths are related to the remains of the more advanced civilization that vanished, it makes a great parallel that fits perfectly with what is going on
one of the best games (and ost's) to come out in the last decade easily.
I'd argue that it's at the least one of the best of this millenium, if not of all time.
The music is such an integral part of this amazing game. I can't imagine it with any other soundtrack.

one thing that's super powerful about 14.3 billion years is that it's the first time bowed instruments have made an appearance in the ost at all. it really feels like the start of something new, but it's still playing that core melody; not everything has changed

You have to do Echos of the eye next. You wouldn't be able to tell out the outer wilds music is "missing something" something that echoes of the eyes fills and it's almost impossible not to notice once you've heard it
Which coincidentally is exactly the role Echoes of the Eye as a DLC accomplishes so well in the game
So happy to see so many people in comments recommending this game. It is my favorite game ever. The story is just.... insane and smart and WOW. I've never had an end to a game make me so sad yet so happy and feel existential crisis. I wish I could erase my memory to experience this game all over again.

I forget which track, but one of them there are dueling guitars/banjos, the developer said this was his past and future self playing the same song over the 4-5 years of development. Both recordings (4-5 years apart from one another) were used in the same track showing his growth in learning how to play over the course of the game's development.
Me as I search through the comments to see if Andrew's watched this one yet and left a comment. Such a talented down to earth guy. It's also worth noting that some of the music pieces are used to indicate things happening in the game. The game uses sound and music in these ways as actual game mechanics, which to me is just super cool. I also believe Andrew was involved with the game early in development, so he was able to build these pieces as the game itself and the story was being created.

I still really enjoyed The Outer Worlds, and the sequel is probably my most anticipated game? not sure, but this game is better, undeniably. It’s so beautiful in its essence, purely driven by curiosity, only checkpoint is your own knowledge, with such an intricately made tiny solar system to explore and learn the story of its inhabitants in. Games like these can’t be made by AAA developers, it’s so tied with it’s indie identity, and while having more to do, more lines of dialogue, would be nice, it’d also rob it of its identity slightly
Somehow the DLC completely lives up to the original too
Hope you are on the path to finish it. It is actually a full experience. You can also choose to complete the dlc before ending the game( which is canonical).
The dlc basically adds a location to the base game and adds to the story and the ending.
But the game and the dlc both hold on their own.

I didn't shed a tear when my first real girlfriend left me, I didn't cry when my fist love committed suicide, I didn't cry at my own mother's funeral, but this game brought me closer to that feeling that makes your eyes well up than anything else. They were all sad, but this hit me closer to my core than anything else. A totally unreal soundtrack

For me it's because it reinforces the idea that no matter what happens in our lives we are just a single speck and any of us have the ability in us to change the course of the universe.. or do nothing.. or run.

i really love the observation at 35:00 about "things are happening" because in a strange way that's true, but perhaps not the way you might expect.
this track "emenates" from certain rocks in the game, and kinda drowns out the music nearby, and not because something intense requires the player's attention, but rather the player is invited to pay closer attention to their surroundings, because these rocks are "quantum entangled", which in the game means they teleport between certain specific locations when they aren't "seen" (something that's easily missed if you're distracted by the music ;) ).
something i feel might be interesting to add btw is more commentary on how you feel the music might be used in the game, like what it's role might be or when it might play.
like, as someone who has played the game it's obvious what the context is in the game, but it'd be interesting (to me at least) to get a sense of what context you would place it in based on the music alone.
Outer Wilds is one of the most emotional soundtracks in indie games out there. Andrew Prahlow stayed with development from the near beginning, slowly refining the music over time to become attuned into the game's atmosphere, creating one of the most beautiful soundtracks ever. If you ever play any of these games apart from listening to the soundtrack, I highly suggest this game.
Played this game back when it first came out. Hearing Travelers still makes my eyes tear up. Good to know I'm not alone there.

outer wilds is one of those rare games that was a work of art from the ground up. many games are made to be fun. but not many of them are made to be ART from the ground up.
I've loved Outer Wilds for a couple years now, and especially it's music. And only now did I make the connection between the reversed notes and sounds, to the actual gameplay. It took the final one in End Times for me to finally realize.
Travelers is just something else it always brings me to tears because of what the song meant when I heard it for the first time, I dont think I was sad about the outcome I was just sad I had to let the game end, I didnt want to let go. Outerwilds is a truly what you call a masterpiece in gaming.
Into the wilds feels to me like a summary of the whole journey we've gone thru, from a cozy beginnig inside timber hearth to the knowledge of our terrible fate, followed by the end of everything but this not being necessarilly terrifying or sad, but actually beautifull, and one last time the theme of timber hearth reminding us that life goes on somewhere else
I 100%-ed this game but this was my first time listening to the whole OST through. A few of these songs don't ever play in game so this was a very good video even though I had already played it.

14.3 billion years still gets me. its hard to go back and play the game again but i can still listen to this song and relive my first time sitting there watching the end credits roll
Andrew Prahlow is my favorite composer of all time. His music just hits different in all the right ways, and flows perfectly with the game that it’s built for. Sometimes it almost feels like the soundtrack was made first and then they made gameplay that fit the tone of the music.
Dark bramble isn’t complete with out the the sounds of heavy breathing and panic
i love that he's transparent about where he already knew some information like at 21:00, i feel like a lot of channels would probably let that slide just to make themselves look better or validate fans of the game

It's both, it's long after the Nomai's apocalypse, the Ghost Matter explosion which wiped out their species in an instant. The game is about exploring their ruins and discovering what they left behind. That definitely makes the setting post-apocalyptic. But ov course at the same time it's apocalyptic for us since the sun explodes

The best part about Travellers is that, in all cases, it's Diagetic. Each of those instruments that fades in belongs to a different person, who joins the song on your cue (in one instance). One of these fellow travelers is present on every planet, and with your listening device you can hear them fade in and out of the harmony as the planets align.
the music is truly part of a cohesive whole that includes the gameplay and visuals. playing the game or watching it played is the best way to experience the music

Wish you could review these tracks with the gameplay. This game does a remarkable job of timing the music with the experience onscreen. It’s not just for setting and atmosphere, the use of the motifs communicate the story.

With that out of the way, I think you explaining the bass at 7:25 just speaks to how much this soundtrack means to me. Although the main melody is definitely emotional, as soon as you played those first notes from the bassline, I felt like a truck hit my emotional processing centre.

So I’m now just hearing the tiniest hint of [REDACTED]’s motif in the title track. Which would mean that EotE has been a plan from the very beginning.
Edit: Sun Station will always be one of my favorites because there’s this “braying” or “winding down” sound in the background that just feels like some old siren or alarm baked into the music to portray the scene of a facility on the brink of destruction.
When I first made the revelation on there, I was so distraught that I just... Sat down. I just watched the station fall into the sun, I was heartbroken.
That theme reflects the pure essence of helplessness to me.

I have Timber Hearth as my wake up alarm. It always brings me back to centre. This is life and this is where it all begins. Now I just need to get on with life one more day before the next.
I know other people are already saying it, but I also wanted to say it. I get so emotional during the Travelers -> Let There Be Light -> 14.3 Billion Years -> Morning part of this soundtrack. Something about this music just brings those emotions I felt while playing this game way back in 2019 back up to the surface and It's amazing. Also your genuine happy reaction to just hearing a really awesome track definitely added to that experience. Definitely gonna watch all of your Echoes of the Eye video right after this.

I saw there was a lot of confusion in the chat after you asked: The Uncertainty Principle is related to quantum physics, and the general jist of it is that with particles that have quantum properties (like electrons and light particles), you can never measure both their position and their speed at once. You can only ever know one or the other, not because of a limitation of our tech, but just as a natural consequence of how the math works. _To my knowledge,_ which is admittedly pretty limited, that's not related to String Theory.
The thing you were describing sounds like maybe Quantum Entaglement? That one is harder to explain, though, I recommend just checking some youtube videos. I think Veritaseum had a good one, and Sixty Symbols definitely has something good about it as well.
(I also feel compelled to point out that while Outer Wilds features quantum-stuff, it's more _inspired_ by IRL physics than a direct reference.)
Anyways, hoo boy. This game, this OST, I.... I barely have the words. Run from spoilers, run. It is a mistery puzzle game, knowledge is both story and gameplay here. If anyone reading this comment has the chance to play it and listen to the music with the added context, I strongly suggest you do so. It is one of the best games ever made, and it is not hyperbole to say it is a foundational piece of media for who I am as a person.
The Sun Station is one of the most beautiful tracks I've ever heard. It plays when you find Idaea's skeleton sitting in the Sun Station contemplating the sun, one of the saddest moments for me.
