People who were kids in the late 90s to early 2000s can understand this fully; we were optimistic about what the future was going to be like, then 9/11 happened, and slowly that warm optimism gave way to cynical pessimism.
This song is such a beautiful end of the day song. Reminds me of back in HS, visiting my dad for the summer in Anaheim and spending my afternoons watching Toonami.
As a kid I thought it was all imagery of Melfina at different points of her life after the end of the series (I assumed as a bio-android she would live a loooong time, but it's never really touched upon in the series). Or that perhaps they were other "Melfinas" from different parts of the universe, like because of the Leylines godlike influence over all life, maybe Mel wasn't the first of her kind to make the journey to the Leyline and perhaps wouldn't be the last? Your mind wanders as a kid.
KashelGladio that's what I thought at the time as well. More along the lines of the genetic material that was used to create Melfina was from the remains of a now extinct race that resides on the planet that the Grave of the Dragon was on and these women were of that race at different times in the planet's history.
These end credits were really haunting when I was a kid for some reason. To this day the illustration girls felt like they were looking back at you… 😧😧😧

I remember nothing about this anime except this ending theme, which has been one of those lost songs of my childhood that I never knew how to go about finding again. By chance, I thought about it recently, and looked up the EDs of a few random anime listed as having aired on Cartoon Network when I was in elementary school, and sure enough, my third search brought up this song! I feel like I should give the series a watch, I think most of it went over my head in those days.
I loved this show so much when it premiered on toonami it was the only graduation gift I wanted when I finished Highschool, it was frankly embarrassing walking into a Suncoast with my mom and pointing out the DVDs I wanted but I still treasure them till today.
I always get a bit sentimental whenever I listen to this. I've heard of these drawing being the creator's predictions of the future and what cool stuff and technology might come, but here we are in late 2023, roughly 25 years after this anime aired and we've made little progress with the world slowly going to shit in addition. That aside, I hope this anime can get another season at some point, even if its been 25 years since...
Its's too bad outlaw star ended after 26 episodes because there were still many more questions to be answered like where did gene get his caster gun, where there more mcdougal brothers and where did suzuka come from the show didn't really talk about her too much and of course were there previous maidens of the leyline
There was a season 2 planned, but action anime doesn't actually do all that well in Japan, and Outlaw Star didn't generate enough hype for it. Angel Links is set in the same setting, but honestly isn't very well-regarded. It's a shame, because Outlaw Star was quite a fun romp that honestly probably would've benefited from at least 4 more episodes. Killer EDs though.
I like the explosiveness of the story. It didn't riddle the show with filler episodes. It was a race and the cast was thrown together by happenstance. I like that. Made it raw. Suzuka not having a backstory makes sense. She's a lone assassin that probably offed her clan or they all died and no one really lives to speak her name. She's a living legend.
@kiyoshi11 Thanks for your comment. I've actually discussed this since with fellow Outlaw Star fans and I do think, as previously commented, the images in the endings are probably to do with the Galactic Leyline. The artist who was hired for these ending pictures was Hikaru Tanaka.
POV I remember I used to stay up late hours of the night during the summer of 2001 to watch Outlaw Star on weekday nights. Especially for this ending, I was 12, I was on summer vacation.. it was hot, the box fan was blowing letting the cool air blow in, I was sharing a room with my brothers. I was the only one awake. Right as this song ending the Tom would always end toonami midnight run by saying “later”. Turn off the tv and think about the melody feeling of being 12 on a summer night while thing song played in my head.
I never stayed up late to watch adult swim but I was a huge toonami fan. I used to watch "Broken Promise" all the time and I loved the clips of outlaw star they used. The monologue about the right to dream didnt really make sense to me as a kid but I watched this series like 6 months ago and it hit. Such a good show, I wish I could have had the memories of watching it during its prime on adult swim.
Imagine being woken up by this ending and absorbing the song/visual aesthetics - real sublime - deep feels - good childhood (Would doze off after watching anime lineup - toonami would RUN the lineup AGAIN, hence catching this and many epic endings while waking up)
Agh. I never forgot the melody of this song!!!!!!! I loved this song so much as a 10 or 11 year-old watching Outlaw Star on Toonami, that I wrote my own English lyrics to the melody just so I could sing it out loud. 😂

Listening this from mexico on 2021
Thanks for sharing
2020 who still bumping? 🌊 wavy asf!
So nostalgic and even more so during this time
it's almost december in 2021... who's still listening this far along?
Man, this takes me back
Its's too bad outlaw star ended after 26 episodes because there were still many more questions to be answered like where did gene get his caster gun, where there more mcdougal brothers and where did suzuka come from the show didn't really talk about her too much and of course were there previous maidens of the leyline
+bakabakabaka what i wish for really is if the manga creator of this is alive i wish he'd finish the manga
If memory serves he already did finish the manga. Needless to say it's very different from the anime anyway and isn't in English.
Mantis: Mega Outlaw Star Fan there was only 4 volumes
The song and visuals make me feel a way I can't name, I feel astranged yet relieved
@kiyoshi11 Thanks for your comment. I've actually discussed this since with fellow Outlaw Star fans and I do think, as previously commented, the images in the endings are probably to do with the Galactic Leyline. The artist who was hired for these ending pictures was Hikaru Tanaka.

This has been a part of me for soooooo long... Damn I'm old...
Same I'm 30 but I'm remember watching this late at night.
I miss this show and i miss this song i could sleep to this
In my opinion, this is the most beautiful ending theme in all of anime.
These endings were such a jarring, yet cathartic way to end episodes of such a high action and rowdy anime.
as a lonely kid in middle school i listened to this and dreamed of a waifu with such a heavenly voice.

still forever alone in 2019
I hope you find someone. Everyone deserves love. There someone one out there for you. I was in the same boat in middle school.
You're not alone you have us on RUclips that love anime too🤗
You will find your waifu, don't give up hope
I had a waifu who had a sweet voice but let me tell you. She was one crazy ass bitch...I am happier being single now.
You're only as alone as you yourself allow yourself to be.
Turn off the tv and think about the melody feeling of being 12 on a summer night while thing song played in my head.
i think i was in 2 grade when i was watched this anime :o i got so hooked to the artwork and the song of the anime i watched it
Dageiffe me to! Then I fell in love with the characters in the end.
Anyone listening 2020?
We in this bitch
Toonami not only gave us the best anime, it gave us the best anime music.
gosh I love this song, I also always wondered about the drawings they showed off like if it had anything to do with the series lol
Every time I watched this show on Toonami, I ALWAYS loved the pictures in the ending songs. My FAVORITE was that picture at 0:42!
The original lo-fi beat.
This is late 90s. Lo fi existed everywhere since the late 80s
2023 and still missing my youth in the 1990's best time to be a 80 amd o0 anime fan
Imagine being woken up by this ending and absorbing the song/visual aesthetics - real sublime - deep feels - good childhood
(Would doze off after watching anime lineup - toonami would RUN the lineup AGAIN, hence catching this and many epic endings while waking up)
Agh. I never forgot the melody of this song!!!!!!! I loved this song so much as a 10 or 11 year-old watching Outlaw Star on Toonami, that I wrote my own English lyrics to the melody just so I could sing it out loud. 😂
Been thinking of watching the series after long agos❤
My favorite picture was at 0:56 Idk why but it's so so... beautiful, man that sounds weird... Nostalgia... I want my childhood back!
I remember always crying when listening to the outlaw star songs. I was like 12 or so. Now im 30, and my mom just passed away. I found myself singing these songs. Hmm.
Sorry to hear that. RIP.
I remember watching this too. My parents had gone away to Utah and I was left all alone to play RESIDEMT EVIL. Rest in piece CRYSTAL NAVA.
Just watched from episode 1 to 26 for the first time this month. was so good! been missing out for years on this one. watching again soon hopefully :) getting up at like 6 am having hot chocolate and watching a few episodes in the dark was nice, sad it ended :(
Legit just heard this song playing at a restaurant. I looked this video up to compare, and my memory didn't fail me...this time.
Those guys have good taste. Pun unintended...
I remember after the chilling to be continued the beginning of this ending with visuals together used to scare me as a kid
So sad to just have the short version. Every full version seems to have dissapeared off of youtube as of right now.
Yeah, Victor Entertainment (the company that owns the Outlaw Star soundtrack licenses) is getting pretty heavy-handed now. All of my soundtrack uploads could disappear in the near future...
If y'all find a full version, I'd really like to find it. Been doing remixes
@@2_sp00ky_4_u it's on soundcloud
You can purchase the entire song on iTunes lol
