    In one of his letters he intimated a desire to stop using drugs because they were interfering with his Jeet Kune Do. He probably found himself immersed in the Hollywood culture so fast that he hardly had time to realize what it was doing to him. Cocaine was especially pragmatic to him as a self medicating drug, given the insane schedule he was keeping, especially filming Way of the Dragon, which he wrote, directed, and starred in. He was burning the candle at both ends at that time of his life like few people ever have in their life. He had some work days that went twenty hours. Unfortunately he died before he could hit the calm waters and step away long enough to get right again. He was an amazing person.

    • @sicilienz
      @sicilienz 5 месяцев назад +3

      Here i think he is talking more about anabolic steroids :1970 letter : _"I really don’t need them in my training. I feel that I have _*_“gained”_*_ in trying them, but excessive indulgence of them just isn’t in my road in Jeet Kune Do"_ he probably felt slower gaining weight and it was anyway against his JKD principle to hack away the unessential(what prevent him to reach his goal). From there (70 till his death in 73) he has started to lose more and more weight.

    • @myfriend280
      @myfriend280 5 месяцев назад

      @@sicilienz I’m not sure it’s really been established that Bruce was even referring to steroids. That has been assumed but I’m not sure that’s clear in the language of the letter. The weight loss could be accounted for by a number of other things already well known. The heat in Hong Kong combined with Bruce’s insane work schedule. Known health issues. Cocaine use.
      If it were steroids he’s still expressing a desire to place his Jeet Kune Do above present bad habits and he may have done this with all things had he survived the ordeal that took him.

    • @TheKungFuGenius
      @TheKungFuGenius  5 месяцев назад +15

      @sicilienz your confirmation bias is nonsense. There is not one iota of evidence in any of the letters that Bob Baker was supplying with anabolic steroids. I know some weird people want to think that, but even Tom Bleecker in his accusations confused corticosteroids, which are anti-inflammatory with anabolic steroids. There is not an iota of evidence. And in 50+ letters which show that he used everything from weed to LSD to mushrooms to cocaine why would anabolic steroids not be mentioned? Also, the steroids available at that time had massive water retention properties and he was completely striated and stripped of weight. It doesn’t even make sense if you talk to a bodybuilder with knowledge of the anabolic of the late 60s and early 70s. But keep pushing your little pet theory that goes nowhere - he’s talking about cocaine in the quote you mentioned.

    • @sicilienz
      @sicilienz 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@TheKungFuGenius well... The truth is nobody knows....some BL's friends commented one day once BL paid them a visit, he appeared huge as a "bodybuilder" and then 2-3 week later, he came back to its original size (because he felt slow and clumsy with the new muscle size) I can only think about one type of aas... Dianabol, which makes you gain crazy amount of weight quickly but 60% of it is water weight and when you stop within two weeks you lose half of what you gained. He wasn't probably a steroid user but we can hypothesis he might have tried. 70's was the golden era of aas, Joe Lewis (who looked heavily under AAS) had a big influence and support to coach Bruce Lee on its weight lifting routines and explained him what movement work which muscles, moreover dianabol was used and seen at that time as we see nowaday creatine : as a simple supplement.

    Have to commend you of discretionary warning. I'm 63 and was a massive fan during my teen years when Bruce Lee first hit the scene. I literally had thousands of magazines and books on Bruce that would of been collectors items and rarities today. Back in the day I would not hear a bad or negative word said about Bruce Lee. So hearing this information back then would of been crushing to me. And I would of gone into denial. But as you get older you look at things in a more realistic light and with calm acceptance of human frailty. So I take my hat off to you for your consideration for todays Bruce Lee fan. To fans learn to accept things as they are and not as you would like to imagine them to be, no matter how painful.

    I’ve long been a Bruce Lee fan since I was a boy as yourself. The drug letters/usage are not flattering but having thought about this aspect of his life long enough, I realize that like all of us, who amongst us have not regretted things we’ve done in life and who among us would not prefer to be ‘judged’ on the totality of our lives, and not just the slices. Not to make excuses, but given he was always young, ambitious, determined, had been rejected by Hollywood, was in an industry/actor where opportunities for people of his ‘tribe’ were very few and very difficult to breakthrough, he had to work so hard and acutely felt the stress/pressure of being the only one at the time to do what he was doing. Drugs/stimulants can be often a coping mechanism of life’s pressures, albeit a bad one. And someone tell me just who in Hollywood or that industry was not using drugs in 1973 ? It was free candy and it was all around I’m certain. Elvis literally lived that way among many others too. I believe that if Bruce Lee had lived longer he would’ve discovered that drugs were a zero net gain to his life and much more of a liability. But he didn’t get that chance. One thing I know for sure, is that it was not possible to have become the caliber martial artist he was without the extreme and diligent work he did all those years. To conclude, at least for me, Bruce Lee was a much more quality human being than any vices he had. His totality lives on.

    Considering how long this book has been around & that it isn't really all that rare/hard to get a hold of (I bought a copy through Amazon probably 10 years or so ago, paid no more than 10 bucks, as I recall) I'm surprised that no fan apparently ever saw those pictures, put two & two together, & thought, hey, Bruce Lee must've used cocaine. Myself, I had no idea what a cocaine spoon was until you pointed it out, but surely not all Bruce Lee fans are as naive about such things as me! Anyway, it's interesting that we now have solid photographic evidence to go along with the Bob Baker letters. I'd be surprised if Shannon or Linda ever openly confirm Bruce's drug habits but I did see Shannon come as close as I'd expect from her recently; it was in a video here on RUclips, "A Life In Ten Pictures" or something like that in which she briefly hints at her father not having always dealt with the increasing pressures of stardom as best he might've, seemed like finally some tiny acknowledgement from the Lee Estate that Bruce (as he himself acknowledged) wasn't a saint!

      @TheKungFuGenius  5 месяцев назад +3

      When someone mentioned it in an old comment, I asked that person if they knew where the photo was and I believe (it's been a couple years) that they remember seeing the pic but didn't remember where. That's what set me on the mission to find it. I'm sure some coke insiders spotted it, and it's curious these pics haven't been used elsewhere. I doubt the Lee Estate will do anything other than bury their heads in the sand on this. Great comment by the way!

    If you google, “Bruce Lee and Betty Ting Pei 1973” there is a photo that shows them together, with Bruce wearing what looks like the same maroon coloured top with the sweat patches under his arms and wearing the same bracelet and watch/bangle on his wrists as in these photos. He’s also wearing a similar necklace that could be the coke spoon but it’s tucked into his vest so you can’t see what it is. I think the pic could be taken the exact same day or at least around the same time as the coke spoon photos. (April 73?) Check it out.
    Regarding the drug letters, I’d love to know if Shannon knew about them or if she was as shocked as the rest of us when they came to light!

He saw the end of that struggle coming with the premiere of ETD. He had meetings set up to for his future with Golden Harvest, his partnership with Chow, future media opportunities and endorsements...there was a strong possibility that he would move his family back to California. He had a lot on his plate. If only he had more time.

    I studied bruce for over 30 years, people have to realize, bruce was among Hollywood types, rich, famous. Child actor, His family was filthy rich$$ growing up, a bit of an ego, even at a young age. Partying was a normal thing, especially back then, "flower child era." The most popular and very well-known thing of the 60s and 70s was drugs, there are ALOT of very well know celebrities especially back then who were very much so into drugs, but even to this day, alot of celebrities, ones you would never think would do drugs, partying like Rock stars.

      you know what i think is really weird, is that there are a lot of people, the ones who knew bruce lee, who trained with him, worked with him, hung out with him so on. After all these years, Still to this day, at least the ones still alive, they keep VERY hush hush about alot of things about bruce lee for some reason. Like who he sparred with, what actually happened behind closed doors with (who)good or bad, training/sparring very well known martial artists including Gene Lebel. Bruces philosophy was to train/spar full contact, so I am sure they went all out on eachother, bruce and June Ree, I believe are the ones who came up with the actual concept of sparring gear, which they got the idea from hockey players, so they can go full contact. Was Bruce really using drugs? coke hashish(weed), if so the chances of him using steroids is very possible. My big question is, did he? 🤔steroids was growing very popular at that time period, for a guy his size to have unexplained strength/crazy speed and power at around 135-140lbs. His body transformation from the green hornet compared to later movies like enter the dragon is unbelievable, Other people said this and bruce said so himself in an interview, is that he has a very short Temper, maybe steroid related🤣,maybe not. But fun to speculate, but you never know.

    I know there have been books written about Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison’s final months, weeks, days…. Would it be worth it for an author to delve into Bruce Lee’s final months in great detail ? Is there enough material ? Because I only know bits and pieces, mainly through this wonderful channel, but honestly I have a fascination for that kind of stuff. Has the whole truth ever been revealed ? Or is there enough to lay an interesting puzzle ? Let’s call it the shadow side of fame and fortune. I find these exceptional icons, whether in music, movies, sports, painting, politics and warfare, … even more interesting because of that often deeply flawed humanity in them, so many personalities often full of contradictions and hidden vices, full of drama.

    How can we process and accept this truth of a man we have admired? This can lead to "pathologies" of: refusal, acceptance or complete ignorance. Whether you are a fan since childhood, an adult admiring the work, a martial artist who respects and owes a large part of his passion to this man or simply an avid fan of movies. Nothing will be able to change the opinion we have, if we think of ourselves as human beings with our qualities and faults, our successes and failures...If we have the intelligence to not ignore the context, the time , the age and the incredible short life that this man lived, we put the elements together and this "aspect" into perspective 50 years later. This is exactly what the man Bruce Lee thought of himself, no more no less.
    PS : Now the media will pounce on this news and this photo and collectors will seek out this holy grail of a spoon that Beerdy must surely have given Bruce as a gift.😂

    Those shots are probably from april 1973 when Coburn was visiting Hong Kong. Same clothes, necklace and haircut. Both Linda and Bruce wrote Baker about a resupply of coke in march and in april Linda asked again whether the money had been received and the goods sent, assuring Baker not to worry about Bruce’s coke habits… Coburn is also explicitly mentioned in some of the earlier letters. With all this coke info being confirmed, I guess this sheds much light on how his sudden death at 32 occured. Of course I am just theorizing, but seems was probably due to having too many substances in his body.
    I doubt he straight up ODd on just coke considering many rock stars go decades slamming coke and still come out alive. It's hard think just coke took him out, but more likely was a crazy combo of stimulants, pain killers and dehydration in the heat. That combo would be enough to take someone out.
    Bruce was ambitious as hell and probably did the coke to get a major edge for stamina. He had that massive work load requiring insane amounts of stamina, plus he aspired to be awesome, so he saw the coke gave him a huge boost and he very likely was on hard core herbal stimulants, which he likely abused for maximum effect (toxic). We know he very likely slammed pain killers for back pain....so, now, we have:
    Cocaine, heaps of herbal stimulants (toxic levels), pain killers, probably 1 other drug, dehydration and massive Hong Kong heat....that is a lethal combo that could end in death, unfortunately.
    This could explain why his death was always sooo mysterious. Yeah, things were covered up and at the time, noone would push the drug theory because it would have sounded like the heresy of a madman.
    Just theorizing, but this theory makes more sense than anything any biographer or documentary has come out with

    I swear I've seen those photos before, just never noticed the coke spoon. And, yeah, I googled "coke spoon" and, yup, that there's a coke spoon 'round his neck, lol. For me, the drug letters took like a week to process…and then I was fine with it. Why? Because, along with the episode of Autopsy attributing his passing to cortisone, the letters provided closure for me on how and why he died. They also revealed the use of mushrooms, mescaline, and acid. Given his non-stop schedule, the energy boost provided by coke makes total sense, as does the "mind-expanding," very '60s lure of psychedelics-something no doubt appealing to the sometimes dashiki-wearing Lee, lol.
    As for his paranoid, aggressive behavior, well, the aggression was always there from childhood and the paranoia of being attacked or taken advantage of was an understandable thing as the industry's "King of Kung Fu," but, yeah, a boatload of cocaine ain't gonna help keep that shit in check. Also, there's something Seattle student Doug Palmer brought up in his excellent bio and was told to him by Linda Lee, which is Bruce taking the opiate Darvon for his chronic back pain. Palmer's daughter and son-in-law are both doctors, and said that Lee's extreme behavior and weight and memory loss sound like addiction and withdrawal symptoms from the on-and-off use, or overuse, of a narcotic. If true, it's simply another in a line of dominoes that ended with his premature demise.
    Still, absolutely no judgment from me. The Little Dragon did what he did to cope and live his life to the fullest and achieve things no one had achieved before or has come close to achieving since. I got nothin' but respect.

Especially the Hoisan and Cantonese in the USA. I vaguely remember hearing something about Raymond Chow trying to hide his death or the reason for it and that he would die as a hero. Ron Smoorenburg spoke about Jackie Chan being portrayed as perfect and not using stunt doubles. In truth he did use doubles so it isn't unheard of covering up the truth for Hong Kong stars.

    I only wonder one thing: how a cocaine addict could be in such spectacular physical shape as he was! The strength, the speed, the resistance, during countless scenes and many filmings! How did he do it? Not many athletes are known to be successfully addicted to their disciplines. I think his cocaine use was recreational and occasional, but it increased more in the final months of his life. Most likely he died from an overdose..... there is no other explanation. But it was decided to disclose natural death due to misfortune, because of the life insurance he had...so that the family would not be harmed. Adrian Marshall the family lawyer took care of everything. All of this is very sad.
