  • How do you know if the gemstones you are buying are fake? It is getting harder and harder to figure out. If you are brand-spanking-new to jewelry making this should help a bit! One of the things I wish I would have said is JOIN YOUR LOCAL GEM AND MINERAL CLUB! They are people who are passionate about rocks and gems and they have so much knowledge they want to share!

    I've been ripped off several times and am still learning. If I'm not sure what I bought is the real deal, I always list it as imitation. Your info. is really helpful. Thank you for this video!

    I think you are right about your % estimate, its unbelievable the amount of crap out there!! It is SO hard to find reliable sellers! Its literally impossible to not get ripped off until you find your gem of a seller, and it is SO enraging and embarrassing when you sell someone a piece of jewelry with stones... only to then later discover that these stones are fake! Even if the client never realizes it, YOU know.

    Do you know what goes on regarding Etsy? Vendors will bribe unhappy buyers of gems so that a negative, yet accurate review never appears on their site. They will send free merchandise, give discounts, whatever. The quality will continue to decline as long as we allow this.

    • @SzarkaCartersss
      @SzarkaCartersss 5 лет назад

      That is one reason we left eBay. It's too bad Etsy went the same way.

    This very helpful.
    I’m just new and I’m pretty sure I’m not using authentic ones because I got it from supply stores at a very cheap price.
    Here in Saudi Arabia, I know of some old places where people cut stones like you’ve mentioned and they are expensive-I think that’s the real ones. :)
    My question is: how should we call them if we know they are not real? Can I just add “faux” or fancy? Like one time, I used “faux silver” beads (I think they are made of plastic, because they are just too light.
    Once again, thank you.
    I can relate to everything you said about how the market is now filled with cheap ones that when you sell authentic ones, people thinks they are just way too much. That is just really sad.

    Thanks so much, Szarka, for all your insight☺. Shopping on eBay or even buying from large, "reputable" jewelry wholesalers (as well as large retail ones - you know who you are😒) can be SOOO frustrating😣! I'm still learning, and I don't think that ever (or I hope it won't😉) ends. Presenting my pieces honestly is very, very important to me, so labeling things can be hard. I've had to change the description of one piece 3 times, because, first I found out the main bead wasn't magnesite (you know...real, whole rock stuff), then I found out it was ground up something that was made into a powder, and then formed into beads😕. Anyway, it's still a pretty bead, but it's now just a "blue bead"😫. I've even stepped away from my "store" building because of this type of frustration, but, like I said, I'm learning. I do wish there was a good resource where one could key in a certain gemmie and find out how to tell if it was real or not.
    Thanks again for all the pearls of wisdom you broadcast out to us. I really do appreciate your wealth of knowledge😃.

      I hate to sound like a cliche but . . . . ;) . . . . if you know a stone well enough to determine it's genuine then you're good! Until then buy from reputable dealers like me! www.magpiegemstones.com

      Theres got to be something out there that is like a chart & shows all the properties of each type of gemstone...& how to test for “realness”! Do yall know of anything like this?

    • @SzarkaCartersss
      @SzarkaCartersss 5 лет назад

      Laurie, maybe. You can just research each stone one after another. That's how I did it.

  • @emmad7299

    I always go to my local gem store to buy beads. The owner always knows where everything is from and how it’s treated. I only buy clear quartz beads from eBay because they are cheap and I can sell them as glass. The quartz beads are glass and are cheaper than the glass beads from Michaels.

    Oh, ya, and my new pet peeve is "Natural Striped Agate" where the normal agate bands are made on the surface of the bead (glass or resin, I presume😒), and you can actually feel the lines. Oh, or the ones that use decals to make the banding. Oh, but it's all natural😝😝😣. And, what is "Dream Agate" anyway😕? Eesh😒!

    • @jilllucke7560
      @jilllucke7560 5 лет назад

      My biggest pet peeve is that every time I have ordered top drilled stones from you the top is so think that when you attempt to tighten the wire, even using the thinnest wire you can and light pressure( these have all been on briolets ) the top of the stone breakers off leaving you with some pretty interesting challenges.

    Are gemstone even real ? I wonder

  • @jackthebeenstock2852
    @jackthebeenstock2852 5 лет назад +1

    lets say. you smash a bead that looks like a turquoise. And you find that it is the same shade inside as well. How do you know the next bead is the same? are you going to smash that too? at the end what will you have to work with if you smash all your beads? also. I was wondering. Can a raw stone be faked or unlikely?

    • @MagpieGemstonescom
      @MagpieGemstonescom  5 лет назад

      Raw can be faked but less often. Usually faux stone is manufactured in blocks.
      With the decades of experience I have I can tell suspect stones because they don't have the right matrix for the mine they supposidely came from. By testing one I can tell if the turq is stabilized or if it's faux.
      Remember I don't buy turquoise from Dollar tables at a gem show. I'm dealing with miners and cutters who work in turquoise.
