Thank you so much for this educational video. I'm fairly new at making jewelry, and turquoise is one of my very favorite stones, I just love it. I've purchased many types of turquoise, both state side and foreign, and get terribly confused. I can't afford to always buy the quality turquoise that I love, so I also purchase other cheaper versions. Most of all, I want to be able to properly identify the stone I use in my creations, and with turquoise, I find that very hard to do. Sally
Don't forget, Moisture trapped in rocks can explode when heated like that or is fire. Many of people have been hurt sitting around camp fire when there were porous rocks with water trapped inside exploded. Those are not quite porous - just saying for others that might not be aware. Hello Magpie, I looked at your website. I like your set up, how you have all your stones labeled :) There is so many dealers that are calling their stabilized natural now, and alot of other imitation stones that are not even labeled what had been done to them. There are alot of customers that don't know and would not know to ask about treatments in their stones, then they find out later on that what they purchased was not the real thing. Appreciate your help in educating others :)
Stabilized turquoise is real natural turquoise. They use chemicals to impregnate and fill the spaces in the stone. Making it more stable so that one can use it. Very little of hard untreated turquoise comes from a mine.
Hi! Today I tryed to burn my turqouse to see if it is not plastic. To my suprice it started to pop like crazy. No smoke though! I didnt understand what it means so Googled it and found your video. I was very happy to learn that this means that my turqouse is natural. But please could you tell me more about this reaction to fire and why it means that its natural. Or where should I look for more information about this. Thank you very much 💙
I am sure that is possiible. I would use stabilized rough for that. We don't carry rough turquoise. I've seen lots of rings carved from other stone. Since turquoise is fairly soft, like I said earlier, stabilized would be the way to go.
The smoke and the plastic smell will tell you it is stabilized. If it lights on fire it's plastic. Popping can happen with natural but there should be no or very little smoke.
That big cab stone burnt at 1:39 in your video, when it's burnt, it won't recover right? Or it does if it is real turquoise? The flame test seems too surreal and hardcore, hahaha but very cool video, thank you.
+gtran7 It s detroyed after it is burnt. We aren't usually this rough on our turquoise but this was a demonstration.We used pieces big enough to be seen.

+Ayiana04 The way to know what you have is to buy from a reputable dealer. I can tell, under a loop, usually, if something has been dyed or stabilized but that takes experience.
It will take the fake color off if it is indeed fake, which unfortunately does happen quite often to people!!! Just really depends on what you as a person likes to wear for jewelry/or have if it is for collection.
m1a1snm it will tell you if something has been oil dyed. You will not know what stone you have. A lot of turquoise has color added during stabilization and acetone will not detect that. Acetone will really only tell you if you have dye in "something" it will not determine if it is turquoise or not and will not definitively determine even of it is dyed. I've seen people show videos of using that as a way of testing and it's sad because the pieces they are testing that they think are proven to be turquoise I would suggest probably arent.

The only way to know 100% where turquoise is from is to mine it. Otherwise, it comes down to trusting. Provenance is everything, from the person who mines it to who cabs it up or beads it, to the end user. Many mines produce different shades and colors of turquoise and can appear very similar, hence, the proveanance. We get our Chinese mainly from 2 different families, both from China. The North American we have is mainly from two suppliers who we have learned to highly trust over the years.

unless it says Natural you don't want it if you are looking for 100% real turquoise, you can test it by using 100% real acetone nail polish remover if ANYTHING comes off in color it isn't real!!! A lot of people try to sell fake Gemstones and semi precious gemstones all the time! it is wrong but unless they are caught why would they stop! :-( It is sad but it is true and they do it everywhere so you just have to get to know your likes and then learn how for yourself unfortunately how to truly determine how to tell real from fake because unfortunately that is the only real way to protect yourself from buying "garbage" or "fake knock offs"! if it is truly real the stone, or gem when they sell it to you somewhere on it will ALWAYS...ALWAYS...ALWAYS...have a N on it for NATURAL! anything else isnt it means they have done something to it!!!

Stabilized is still true Turquoise but Must be disclosed as such. Only purchase from a trusted seller or directly from the mine owners. Avoid anything that comes from China 99.9% is fake. Howlite is often dyed blue/ green and sold as Turquoise. Enhanced means dyed and stabilized. Block is Turquoise dust/ powder mixed with resin and pressed into blocks. There’s not very many active mines today. Don’t be fooled by low prices. $10 for a sterling silver ring = Plastic or dyed howlite in a silver colored setting. Ana Jewelry of California is notorious for selling fake/ costume Turquoise Jewelry. Royston, Kingman, Sleeping Beauty, & Durango are known trusted dealers. They have natural, stabilized, enhanced(dyed &stabilized), block. The prices reflect the value. I use Natural and Stabilized Turquoise in my Jewelry and label as such. Natural Turquoise is rarer than Diamond. I wish the market reflected its true value. Other stones similar to Turquoise worth looking into are Variscite, Variquoise, Faustite,& Chalcosiderite.

Well its ten years later after the demo, but her is the FACT. Over 90% of the turquoise produced now is stabilized with the demand for turquoise so high we have to accept using stabilized stones if we want to keep producing new jewelry. Is there high grade and gem grade still neighbors mined sure but try buying it at a price that allows us to make jewelry for the masses. I cut and sell turquoise all the time in addition to making jewelry but face it folks when a guy walks past my show booth munching on a corn dog in shorts with sandals holding onto his new girl friend he ain't looking for investment grade turquoise, he trying to buy a shiny blue stone to impress her on the salary he makes.. Remember guys there are for more common people than rich keep it in perspective. Buy turquoise jewelry because you like it. If you are buying as an investment this a bad idea.. INVEST IN YOUR SELF INSTEAD THIS CAN NEVER BE TAKEN AWAY OR GO DOWN IN VALUE.. peace...

Hello, so the one that burnt with a smoke is fake ? and the one cracks not fake? for the blue howlite 'turquoise'

There really isn't. You need to buy from a reputable dealer or directly form the mine.
100% acetone nail polish remover with a q-tip will tell you real qick if it is real or fake and no break!!!
