This generation of Audi TT has aged beautifully!!! I love its looks even more than 20 years ago!!!
I AGREE!!!! True story- I found an 2003 TT convertible 3 years ago with 2500 miles. In PERFECT condition. It still looks great, just like you said. It has a timeless style.
To my mind, the Mk1 TT is much more attractive than the later generations. They may have improved mechanics of some sort, but they are not nearly as beautiful.
Finally, some recognition the TT deserves! It’s a fast, reliable, daily driver!
Love the simple design of the interior. That’s how a car can age well: simplicity.
Totally agree! We'll see in a near future how current car interiors and especially dashboards will age badly with all their shitty screens and dials and horrible buttons and latches...
the 225 and 180hp engines are very different. they changed about everything to get it to 225hp. shorter intake, other turbo, better con rods, 2 intercoolers for the turbo, more oil nozzles to squirt onto the piston etc. theres a whole list of differences between 180 vs 225hp to look through. although the basic block and head design might be similar, theyre still very different
Seeing as the TT predated the R8, I'd say the R8 took inspiration from the TT.
Thats exactly what I was saying everytime he said it looks like an R8! Even if he got that a little wrong, you still gotta love the Wizard!
@@findyourdad9899 Definitely gotta love the Weeeezzard!!👍🏻
I don't think either car took inspiration from the other. They are literally completely different in every way imaginable.
@@Rac3r4Life the TT physically can't take any inspiration from the first gen R8 because the TT came first. And yes, the later generation TTs did indeed take inspiration from the R8. Sooooo
@@Rac3r4Life the R8 probably took inspiration from the PASSAT...LOL!
The Isle of Man TT (Tourist Trophy) is a series of motorcycle time trials that began in 1907.
The RAC TT is a sports car race that originated in the Isle of Man in 1905, but subsequently moved to Ards (Northern Ireland), then Donington Park (England).
The TT races are the most iconic motorbike races for the whole world except for the USA. Anyone who hasnt seen them get searching for a street circuit par excellence. Then check out the factory Subaru STi laps with British rally champion unbelievable stuff on that road.
Correct. It's named after the RAC sports car races, not the motorcycle event.
@@quietenglishman4179 I think you are Incorrect . NSU participated in the TT. NSU later merged with other companies to form Auto Union and later Audi. The styling is a homage to the early race cars.... Or so i have read.
I'm happy to see the MK1 TT getting so much coverage lately. Awesome.
Strange, i noticed that too!
Can't help glaring at that Starion. Please do a vid on it. Very rare to see one these days. I remember they used to have a louvre panel on the rear window.
I was just going to comment on the Starion myself.
you know it was supposed to be called "Stallion" but the Japanese pronounce our L as R and the mistake became permanent
In the mid 80's, I worked in Borneo. A colleague had a Starion. I borrowed it over a weekend. As I recall, I don't think I was very impressed with the way it drove. I wasn't sure whether the turbo wasn't working, or I just wasn't driving it hard enough, but It didn't seem to have the amount of get up and go that the looks would imply.
It did look wonderful, though. They still do , actually.
Probably one of the more underrated cars around. They're not as bad on maintenance as comparable cars and the 1.8T has huge tuning potential. They also handle better than people give them credit for.
The mk1 is so timeless. 22yrs old, just look at it, and that interior! I frkn love it. Also the 1.8T is a very reliable engine with tons of tuning options.
Audi TT Mk1s are one of my favorite looking cars ever. I just bought a 2001 roadster in amazing condition in nimbus grey. It’s art. It drives better than my old boxster (Porsche) did, the interior design is just as gorgeous as exterior. It sounds great and love the turbo.
The name also harkens back to the NSU Prinz TT - which was something of a Golf GTI of the 1960s.
Seeing that gorgeous interior again sure brings back some memories. I had a black FWD TT Coupe back from 1999 til about 2004 or so. It was a very early production car that had left the factory without a rear spoiler and without ESP. But it was one of the cars that got those things retro-fitted by the factory in response to that series of crashes that semi-ruined the TT's reputation initially.
I loved that car to bits and it was the first "cool" car I ever had. It was super-reliable, lots of fun to drive and surprisingly practical and reasonably comfortable. I took my GF on a 1,000 km trip to France in it and we didn't have to travel light or anything. That trunk is plenty spacious for a little sports-car and you can always drop the rear seats if you need more room.
And when I sold it with about 115,000 km on the clock, the whole car, and especially the interior, still looked as good as new. There weren't even any real wrinkles, let alone nicks or tears, in the leather on the driver-seat.
Later in life I got to drive the TT Mk II for about a month or so and while it was a better car overall, it just didn't feel as special as the Mk I. Probably because it lacked all those quirky details in the interior that made the original TT so unique.
My TT's interior still looks mint like you described. I'm taking care of it but I never had another car that kept it's youth so long.
You've gotta try out the S-Line R32 TT wizard. It's a much better driver's car than the 4 cylinders!
I'm hoping to find one of these low miles (not likely) but yes, agreed! I had one of the first 2004 R32, had to sell it after the first 2 years but at a profit, at least. Sorry I sold.
You may know someone that got one for sale?
Stock it probably is, but if you start modifying them the inline fours can handle very high power
The name isn’t R32 TT it’s still a TT but with the 3.2L VR6 engine.
And in the TT 3.2 has 265HP and the MK4 R32 has 241 hp
@@carguy7884 they are with minor mods much faster also because they lighter, but nothing beats the sound of a VR6😉
I immediately liked the TT. Most likely that was because the first one I saw was a convertible and it reminded me of VW's Karmann Ghia (an all-time favorite!)
I had a 2001 audi TT 225, recently sold it. I gotta say that car was the love of my life. I loved it every last bit
I own three (3) TT’s, - 2001 1.8 Liter, 2005 3.2 Liter and a 2018 2.0 Liter and love them all, I believe it’s the most engaging car you can drive. Thank for the review.
Interested in selling the early ones 😅
Every time The wizard would get a new beetle, it's named after a pokemon
He is a man of culture 👌
That was a perfect example of a TT, what great condition.
It's not an example, it's a real tt.
I have an identical TT , had 5 years and love it
Haldex Quattro system needs a fluid change to work well ( google that)
Designed in ‘95 as a concept at the motor show and produced which is rare
I have snow tyres on mine and only use in 🏴 winter ( Boxster 3.2 S for other months )
Not cheap to upkeep but love it
Chrysler was famous for turning concepts into reality during the 90's.
*INHALES!!!!!!* Is that one of the FORGOTTEN 80's Japanese Sportcar in the background! IT IS!!! A Mitsubishi Starion! One of my Favorite cars and to this VERY DAY! I am still hunting for another one. But the GTS WIDEBODY version.
Also, waiting for the NEXT TT Race coming up on the Isles of Man.
The mistubishi Starion was my first car - it was second hand 1984 I think
Hopefully if enough viewers ask he'll do a feature on it. I had 10 of these things over the years, laterly I had 3 at one time and enough spares to build about another 2 cars and i sold the lot for peanuts. If only I'd kept one. Can't remember the last time I saw one on the road, they're mostly rusted away here in the UK.
I sure hope there will be a video on that Starion/conquest
Please a video on the Starion!! I love Mitsus from the 80s and 90s. '96 Galant 2.0 V6 owner from Germany here.
I like the Mitsubishi vehicles in the 2000's and 2010's as well. I am still waiting for a buy this, not that video for Mitsubishi.
@@md2k8 yeah you're right, but the high point was in the 90s. A pristine, fully-optioned 91 Diamante (Sigma here in Germany) is still the dream.
@@grunkohlaktionar7474 The newer Diamante's from 2002 to 2005 are a not to buy, due to an amount of mechanical problems, same with the Montero's and Montero Sport's.
@@md2k8 I agree partly, but not with the Montero. Those things run forever. Everywhere in the world where the terrain is tough, you see LCs and Monteros from all generations. They are really built to last forever
@@grunkohlaktionar7474 Also, the Mitsubishi Outlander's without the CVT transmission will last for a long time, especially the V6 models.
Watched the whole video... just to get as many glimpses of the Starion/Conquest I could. Favorite 80’s car ever!
I’m sure the Wizard will do a video on my Conquest soon.
Wizard is that a 1987 Mitsubishi Starion ESI-R? I'm in love? PLEASE review! The cube is awesome btw.
Love the specs Wizard!
The sole car that went from its initial design to production with only 1 minor change. Timeless design and with no doubt a future classic. Buy now as prices are low !!
I've had a 225 for 8 years now... was a second car and used it as a daily for a year.... has 101k miles on it now, think I've done 150 miles in three years, it sits but I'm motivated now with all these videos and Hagerty, they did another article on it comparing it to other classics.
Seems like you're getting more comments on the Starion/Conquest than the TT
Hey Wizard, please do a video on that Conquest, man that takes me back.
Please do a video on that Starion in the background. Car of my youth, soooo frickin' cool.
Can we PLEASE talk about the Starion?? I really like the TT, but that Starion...
I agree!! I had an 88 Starion way back when.
Agreed! I think the Starion was a really good looking, stylish car and looked fun as hell! I've always wanted one.
I was thinking the same thing!!
Yep, recognized the wheels as soon it entered the picture.
Gotta love the flatty and fatty Starquests!❤😁
God I love this car. Got one of my own in blue. Perfect for me, my gf and the 2 cats.
You two are fantastic - lots of chuckles and smiles at the commentary back and forth in this one. I hear where you're coming from with the in-out ease, Wizard - I love my Soul for that. Even at 6'2", it's just sit down and in, stand up and out. I....... still agree with Mrs. Wizard though about the Cube. :P
Answer to the question: One car I remember really not fitting well in was a 1993 Cavalier. Seat didn't go back for enough, roof needed to be at least 2" higher. Any bump and my head was hitting the roof. Fortunately, friend just asked me to drive for him once in it.
The 225hp isn’t determined by the Quattro it’s an engine refresh just so ya know! Great video as always wizard!
I have a 2002 TT convertible roadster 225. They are a pain in the ass to work on and are plagued with problems , but I love the car and they are extremely fun to drive, so I keep on fixing it when it breaks. 214K miles, still running and looking good.
Nice to see the Bentley back in it's parking space. Also noticed the Starion in the shop!
I've had my 02 Quattro TT since it was new and routinely put snowboards during winter, and surfboards during summer in the trunk w rear seats down
the Starion in the background is worthy a video too!
As an oddity, I more interested in the review of that Chrysler Conquest behind him.
On further review, I am with rest of you. I don’t know why I thought I was unique.
Forget about the TT, that must be the last surviving Mitsubishi Starion in the background . . .
I was thinking the same thing !!!
I’m glad I’m not the only one who noticed the starion.
Me third of that thought not enough love for my favorite mitsubishi
I had a slab sided Starion...fun car.
Now the starion is an awesome car
Had one like this, but it was painted white and had black rims. It had bigger turbo, free flow air filter and stainless steel exhaust with only one silencer. That car looked and sounded good and was very fun to drive.
I would rather see a video on the Conquest in the background 😲
This is definetly a future classic.
The Cube's seating is exactly why the Scion XB was so popular with an older crowd, the opposite of what Toyota was trying to achieve. However, when I was in Okinawa the Toyota BB was super popular among those of us who were allowed to have cars (I wasn't one of them). You could fit 5 Marines in them with plenty of legroom, you could fit a ton of luggage in it. It's a perfectly sized car for the size of the roads over there. I'd buy one now that I'm 27 because I know better, but at 19 I thought they were ugly.
The red Mitsubishi Starion is cooler. TT’s baseball glove stitch seats are the coolest ever.
I had a TT in 2001. I spent $6,000 on a lowering/handling kit that destroyed the once great handling (but it looked very cool). Anyway, Audi probably spent 10's of millions of dollars designing the suspension on the TT and I thought I could make it better 😛
I realize I’m replying two years later but yeah, I did the same thing. Lowered on neuspeed springs and koni FSDs. It looked amazing but I went through 3 oil pans and the 4th time ended up totalling the engine due to massive rapid oil loss from hitting a small rock on the highway. Good times 😂
@scoTTlarock225 how low were you?? I'm thinking about getting coilovers to just drop it like 3/4 of a inch.
And they spent like 800 million fixing the suspension after it came to light that the first cars were lethal to drive :D (though at like 120mph)
Talked with an Audi owner the other day, told him he had a beautiful car, his reply: “Yeah, it’s nice if you don’t own it, otherwise, the cost of maintenance is insane.”
He had an A4 convertible, brand new, looked beautiful, kind of like when you get a mistress, pretty but it’s gonna cost you
I had 4 audis all different engines had lots of problems with them
People that thinks maintenance of Audis is insane should stick to Kias and hyundais. The three last years my daily has been an Audi A8 W12 and I think it is cheap to maintain :)
@@M275AMGRestorations weird flex but ok bro 👌
Maybe on an air suspension A6 and above, but an A4 and below, maintenance is cheap. At least it is here in Europe.
I followed a cute little Jet Black TT on my road today. Haven’t seen one in a long time. I thought what a nice little car. But I’m 6-5 and don’t think I would fit. Then the Wiz sends me a notification that he’s got one in the shop. Love it when that happens!
We would like to know more about the Red conquest next to it. Please
Happy to see the channel doing so well. Over 620,000 subs! Congrats to a good man and a great mechanic!
Wizard, you are so right the cube being easy to get in for older men that don’t want to contort in order to drive them. Any possibility in doing an episode about what vehicles are easier to get in? I figured myself that the Ford Transit, Honda Pilot or CRV, and the Hyundai Palisade are ones I found easy on the head to get in. Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Xmas to you and the family!
Had this for 3 years, quattro version as well. Now I have a 2000' S3, same engine but 210hp. So I can sit my kids in the back. A nice rewiew from the Wizzard. This car has been called many names:
- hair squinshy (I hope I spelled that right) product for men by Jeremy Clarkson
- pocket rocket by Mike Brewer (Wheeler dealer show)
- an now the best of all - A cute little sucker by Mrs Wizzard.
Brit here: Whilst TT might evoke a little more here, it didn't stop us laughingly calling it the titty, and it garnered a reputation as a "hairdressers car" as the years rolled on.
I got that from Top gear where they used to call it a hairdresser car Jeremey Clarkson did
This car, along with the mazda miata, new beetle, minis, etc fall into the "cute" category and were bought by a lot of women. still didn't stop me from buying one
You're exactly right... Gay dudes have great taste.
@@thelastmemphian I have much more respect for a man who is comfortable enough with his masculinity to drive something like an MX-5 or a TT than someone who needs a V8 penis extension Mustang.
And I'm not just saying that so I get a discount at the hairdressers.
@@BUEAU It's a cracking wee machine, I'm just making an observation that the absurdity of the name given didn't pass us by even with a historical context.
Silly will trump logical 8 times out of ten.
Beautiful Car Wizard. Just Beautiful. It really sucks to get old.
Me, too.
Actually, the 180 HP TT is more practical than the AWD. I’ve owned a 2001 5 speed Roadster TT and the trunk is larger, car is lighter w/o AWD and gets better MPG. With a chip, I get 33-35 mpg on the highway at 65 mph. With the top down, very easy in/out, and more enjoyable to listen to the Borla exhaust. Two tops in 20 years and still have original brake pads. BTW, I’m 75 and shall keep this car. Thanks Mr. Wizard.
true but the quattro is Audi's signature and driving experience it skrrtss in the corners and snow
Just a quick tip from Doug Dumero, the 180hp version is easily identified by its single exhaust tip. The 225hp has the dual exhaust. I also believe the 225hp version only had the 6 speed manual opposed to the 5 speed.
Also do a review on that red Starion
Get the most mad hitting your head reminds me of my grandpa who would tell “THUNDERATION!!”... when he bopped his head on a kitchen cupboard left open. Great video.
At least it made it to the shop BEFORE the timing belt snapped.
The last TT that came into my shop had the belt snap at 70,000 miles (the recommended scheduled change was at 80k), its very bent valves are now on display in the waiting room to show why timing belts are important maintenance items.
Was it really old and just below mileage replacement schedule. Maybe it exceeded age replacement and owner never bothered to get it changed in time.
TT's are cool but let's see the Starion/Conquest!😀
always liked those starions and yes that should be the chrysler conquest tsi i believe
Do a show on that red Conquest TSi Turbo. That is very cool and was the predecessor to the Laser and Eclipse.
I just retired my 04 TT at 170k miles. I loved driving and owning it.
These vehicles are going to become more and more collectible notice how more and more people are talking about them and more articles coming out....
Good entertainment! Back & forth with Mrs car wizard!
Good vid on the TT - now, what about the Mitsubishi Starion or Conquest TSI next to it...???
FYI, not all quattro models are 225s! Here in the states the 180 was offered in a FWD Automatic & AWD 5speed. 225s are all 6speed Quattros.
The 45 Extra horsepower over a standard 1.8T is due to the dual intercoolers, larger K04 Turbo, and more aggressive tuning.
I remember this one on wheeler dealers when it was missing first and second gear
thanks....I have three replaced discs in my neck and was toying with the idea of getting a TT.....I think you have answered that question for me!!
6:51 - I miss the simplicity of cars of this generation... still had the tech you needed minus the obnoxious screens, touch pads etc you gets in cars now.
Also I like how everything under the hood is metal instead of a whole bunch of flimsy plastic parts (ie. the valve cover).
i have one of these, tons of plastics lower down
I think Mrs Wizard should get her own microphone. She earned it!
I want to talk about that red Conquest!
Please do a video on the Starion!!! My father had a 84. My favorite joke to play on him ( i was 6-7 yr old) was to switch the digital speedometer to KMH. =)
Is the red car a Mitsubishi Starion?
Or the Dodge equivalent- can’t remember it’s name...
Conquest
Dodge Laser or Chrysler Conquest
@@mediumunwell The Laser was a Eagle talon Mitsu Eclipse sister car
Everyone has their own opinions and reasons for the cars they drive. It's nice to have so many options. Cars are like people!
Wizard, are we going to see a video on that red Starion/Conquest in the near future? I had one about 20 years ago I always thought the car was ahead of its time!
13:13 that BAUM!!!
Beautiful...
Yeah... But.... That's a Conquest TSI in the background!
That lift clip of the TT was the bomb.
I also understand the getting in and out your daily driver. I have a Kia Soul and love it.
Do a video on the red car behind you! I forget what they were called something like conquest maybe? Saw more of them in the 90s! Haven't seen one in years!!! And wasn't there two car versions of this!
Yeah, it’s either a Mitsubishi Starion or a Chrysler Conquest. Beautiful car
Thank's
Yeah they were! Used to carry groceries out to one when I was 17 years old! Now I'm 40!!
The New Beetle and TT are both based on the MK4 Golf hence the similarities. I remember the episode of Wheeler Dealers where they bought a TT with no 1st & 2nd gear. It was the rivet for the selector fork for 1st & 2nd gear that had sheared. It was lucky that the transmission hadn't grenaded.
Yummy yummy - Mitsubishi Starion - I want it !!
I bought one exactly like this TT for my wife in 2002.
We had it for four years.
She loved it!
She now has a newer VW Beetle convertible, but the TT was a bit classier.
The interior is extremely high quality, better than most cars in the market.
What's the story behind that red mitsubishi starion in the background? I know those rims and that fastback. 😂 Good old memories from the 90's.
Car Wizard - I have a 2001 Quad convertible that needs some bits and bobs. It is my understanding that the TT was built on the Bug chassis. How would I find out which parts (traction control, airbag sensor, etc.) are cross-compatible so I can pay VW prices instead of Audi prices? - Thanks for the content!
Wizard: “Acura NSX and Honda S2000 are not sports cars”
Some beetle based bubbly boi shows up
Wizard: “now that’s a sports car”
In and out vary stylish albeit, conservatively styled as sporty cars go. Had a friend who had one for a few years when they first came out . He loved it. I rode in it once. A bit small when you are 6'2" 240. But still very nice for the right person.
all i wanna see is a video of that badass red conquest or starion in the back!!!! @carwizzard
I always thought those were great looking, really fun cars. Wanted one desperately back in the 90s. Would love to see one mechanically sorted today, or maybe with an LS dropped in.
We have a Citroën Berlingo a car based on a small van and like the Cube, it's so practical and easy to get in and out of. Other much prestigious cars end up being frustrating when they can't do what the Berlingo does and feel claustrophobic in comparison. A handy vehicle to have in any household!
Wizard! What’s up with the Conquest/ Starion??
Can you PLEASE share more about the Starion in the back?? That’s my dream car!
Damn, is that a Starion back there?
Oh my god is that a Mitsubishi Starion beside you. Awesome car
What I wouldn't give for that Conquest TSI in the background!
Yeah , you have right "Wizzard",this car is timeless. It makes fun to drive this car, cause i worked in Hungary(Gyor) were the car was assambled.🚗😁👍
Always saw the TT as a call back to the Karmen Ghia actually.
Hope that red Chrysler Conquest / Mitsubishi Starion / Dodge Laser / etc. makes the channel👀👀👀👀!!!
Sweet Conquest in the background. Do a video on that.

Was that a 1987 Mitsubishi Starion in Ming Orange in the background?
No that’s my car 1988 Mitsubishi Conquest TSI import for Chrysler
I once drove an Audi TT Abt STW Edition which was 1 of 6 ever made.
If I remember correctly it had the same engine but tuned up to around 300hp. That thing was a breeze to drive with its Quattro manual drive train. Just awesome.
