You can even fit all four wheels _in_ the car - I know this because I've tried. I love that car. Looks good, sounds decent, and it's slow enough that you can just floor it whenever you want without worrying about crashing or going over the speed limit too much, but still fast enough so it never feels slow. It's quite comfortable, too. In other words, it's a great sporty daily driver.
Fuck it. I always have, and always will love the 1st gen TT. Never actually been ashamed of that, either, I just see people not liking the design and it confuses me.
My 21st birthday present was a rented 2001 Audi TT Quattro Roadster. 1.8-liter, 225-horsepower twin-turbo 4-cylinder, 6-speed manual transmission. My father & I actually got that little red rocket up to a buck five on Route 1 in Saugus, MA, & it was so smooth & comfortable, it felt like we were doing 60!!!!!
I know you stalled it a lot but that owner needs to chill, damn. Stalling it isnt that bad for the car. Every single time "wow, ive never stalled it! Are you serious?!" was getting annoying fast. Dont let other people drive your car if you are that overprotective of it.

The Audi TT is the German Miata. It handles great, is quick enough, and looks good. If someone wants a nice autocross car for the weekends, and a car that makes them smile everyday, they COULD buy this. I have driven a few (on the street and autocross course) and really think they are good cars. I did buy a Miata instead of this though, and im glad about that.
+Talford Winstonworth Hey, arguing over aesthetics is pointless. If you base your purchases on looks and other peoples opinions, this car isnt for you.
i had 2 Miatas. then i bought the Audi. Much more zip.. I rented a new BMW 410i on a trip. I loved it but was not unhappy to come home to my 2002 Audi TT turbo AWD

+Darude Her Right In The Sandstorm™ theres a lot to like about this car. its all wheel drive with manual. I bet this thing would be badass to drive around in the snow.. also.. it just looks like a car that would be fun for spirited driving. or driving like a maniac.
+Talford Winstonworth Yet youre the one replying negatively to all positive comments about that car I bet you don't shave your balls for yourself and drive a Camaro
This car looks like the engine should have been placed where the rear seats are. I have always thought the older tt's looked pretty bad but they stepped up their game with the new one.
Great review. I drive one of these and I love it. I often find myself toying around with the idea of buying a different car, but then I sit inside of my TT and everything just feels so right. However, I would recommend buying the 225hp, 6 speed, dual exhaust version. It is just the better package. With a few small (but pricy) modifications, it really wakes up and performs pretty well. Is it a track weapon? No. But it is fun, safe, fuel efficient-ish, rips through snow and has a surprising amount of space for a quasi 2-seater. And looks, I got looks for days! Everybody thinks the car is much newer and more expensive than it is. Timeless look.
Had an '02 quattro roadster, with the 225 HP engine chipped up to about 250, and 18" wheels. It looked great, was extremely comfortable, even on long trips, and even managed a couple of low-key track days. It ran reliably and my daughter, who was 10 or so at the time, loved it. I ended up trading it on a tow vehicle for my actual track car, but still miss it. An under-appreciated, fun little car. But I don't think I ever stalled it....

that piece of advice at the end has in retrospect made all 4 car choices i've made in 11 years of driving seem like great choices. Thanks Mr. Regular for the best piece lf car advice anyone could hear.
I had one of these little cars except mine was a 2001 TT Roadster with Quattro AWD and 225-hp. And 6-Speed transmission, obviously. (I never stalled it once either /s) Not too bad on fuel, about 22/30 mpg. It was really sweet ride with the top down. I drove it across the country, through the Rockies and Sierra Nevada, the Sonoran, the Great Plains, etc etc. I even cruised down PCH from SF to SD. It was like a dream. Anyway, someone stole it and wrapped it around a tree; they totaled it. I miss that car.
Not only have I learned a lot about cars while watching this show, but also many important life lessons. I'm really not exaggerating. Mr regular truly does have a lot of good insight.
The TT gets the Miata treatment, for sure. I didn't know what love was until I drove my Mazda and I can guarantee nary a car will put a smile on your face as often as an MX-5.
TT means "Tourist Trophy" and across Europe, there were many TT's. The Dutch MotoGP Grand Prix is called the Dutch TT Until 1974 there was a German TT, also called Eiffelrennen. The German TT was for both cars and motorcycles!
These Audi’s are under appreciated, especially if you live somewhere where it snows. There will be huge ass snow storms and blizzards and I’ll drive past these macho dudes with their huge trucks or jeeps and they’re all spinning out or crashed and I’m just chilling there with my car all in tact, not having to worry about crashing. Give the TT some respect bc it’s an absolute tank.
How he moved using an Audi TT. 1. Threw away all his stuff in Pennsylvania 2. Drove self and some clothes across the country. 3. Bought new stuff in Oregon.
Just now finding this review - my ex-wife had a TT exactly like this one, same color and all. I laughed especially when you stalled it; I stalled hers the first time I drove it too. I also ended up hitting 3rd instead of 5th from time to time. Fun car to drive, hell to maintain as it was out of warranty. She got rid of it when the kid got too big for the backseat, which didn't take long. Love your videos!
A long time ago, I went out to buy the first gen of psp. They only had one left and it was pink. I got the pink one and poured thousands of hours into it.
After a shitty year I wanted to buy/treat myself to a sporty car... Looking into the TT I found this vid and between the "ball shaver" and "the finite laps around the sun" I found myself buying this car the next day... Adopting the ballshaver and the finity of life as a crede to live by. Thank you sir for this gift!
You nailed it! I always wanted one because they looked great but always bought the more practical car. Eventually i said F' it and got one and loved it (till it started cost too much to repair).
Mr regular! I have to agree I just drove my first Audi from the same era, the 2004 a4 Quattro and that clutch engages so much differently than I'm use to!
***** you can get respect in this; it beats most of those other street regular cars, and got some Audi quality over it. You aint so sure about your own sexuallity? Haha
+Talford Winstonworth remeber that its not the car who is choosing your and its personality, its the other way around. you can make it the way you want. a car enthusiast wouldnt say the things you comment on here
Car enthusiasts that laugh at you because of your personal choice in cars are not real car enthusiasts in my book and therefore thier opinions don't matter to me. I regularly drive my girlfriend's Honda Fit that says "I love my ferrets" on a bumper sticker that has hearts all over it. The car practically screams female driver and I could care less. What complete strangers think of me is unimportant.
+Talford Winstonworth You are the damn troll! I don't know how you don't recognize that. I'm not sure if you have a personal vendetta against the TT or not, but it's pretty laughable how insecure of your sexuality you seem to be. Why the hell do you care what someone will or won't think when SOMEONE ELSE drives the car they own?
Mr. Regular hit the nail on the head when it comes to the TT when it was new. The reason to dismiss the TT now is more that, like anything on the MKIV Golf platform, it gets weird electrical issues if you look at it funny or live in any place with "weather". It also (rightly) gets some flack for it's stock (lack of) performance and quirky (read: bad) handling when it's pushed. I know someone who had one of these and it tended to understeer right up until you lift a little and then BAHM! it rotated in a panic-inducing way that required you to jump back and the throttle to save. Sure, that just means there's a learning curve, and you could learn to adapt your driving style to it...
+RadioMuse1 But why should such a thing actually act worse than it's Golf (particularly R32, since that was also AWD, but was known for feeling more planted) and A3 brethren? Maybe it's just the styling that convinces us that its; supposed to be a "sports car" which results in higher standards. I guess I wouldn't know since I've never driven a MKIV Golf or A3 from this era. I just know the TT was chippy.
Glad you spoke on this topic of masculinity in the car world. I want to get a modern Mini Cooper so bad but everyone from my mates to my mum to my girlfriend gives me shit for liking them. It's the 'mr bean car, the gay mans car, the rich daughters car to them, but I think its just brilliant. I will probably still buy it but I really get tired of getting shit from everyone, forceful sterotypes are annoying and the car world is no exception.
+tomo55554 As the owner of '06 Cooper S hardtop I say just do it. As Mr. Regular said, life's too short drive what YOU want to drive, not what someone else thinks you should.
Krystal Myth I pat myself on the back endless for getting one so I say with confidence the 350z is a sweet ride. Quite harsh on the Tein coils it’s riding on but fun factor is huge
When I think of The TT, I think of Ed. I meet Ed when I was fixing my first motorcycle up at the local restoration shop, there often for welding. His full time job was managing a private car collection with somewhere around 40 cars in it, and the TT was the one he picked to get hum around most often.
At first i really didnt like the styling of the TT, too round too soft, but after looking at it for a while its growing on me. Still probably never going to buy one but if i had to owning one wouldnt be that bad.
Super review. I owned an 04 TT. It was slightly modified for a little more power and quicker handling and it was perfect. Fun in the dry and an absolute blast in the snow. Never walked up to that car without feeling it was artwork. If I could have kept the check engine out longer than three weeks at a time I’d still own it. If you want one buy one. Now.
Risto In germany women drive 50hp microcars. An Audi TT consumes like 13L/100km so it's a true man's car in germany ironically because women don't like to waste loads of money on cars.
@@3O2MuStAnG I don't know where in Germany you live, but in my city there's a pink TT driving around and my former chemistry teacher's wife drives a TT.. But well.. He drives a Fiat 500.
I owned a 1st gen 225 for literally 30 days. Bought it second hand from a dealer, full service history, 80k miles, freshly serviced, all boxes were ticked that should be. 3 weeks after owning it, the oil pump failed and despite immediately turning the engine off after seeing the low oil pressure warning light, the sump was full of metal. For short amount of time it worked, it was super fun. But there are so many things that can go wrong with that 1.8T engine and the quattro system buying one second hand is an absolute minefield.
It’s like you’re in my brain! I loved my first gen and I’m about to buy a 3rd gen TTS on Monday. I also own at least two Philips BodyGroom shavers (and the boys - if they could talk - would thank me). Keep being you, RCR. Much love from the North Carolina coast. 🤔 *maybe I should start a RUclips channel*
This got real phylosofical at the end lol. I love every gen of TT they're such a fun cars to drive and if you take out the rear seats on a first gen and do some weight reduction and stage 1 engine mods you will be almost unbeatable on a track. These engines with a correct tune and good parts can hold up to a insane amount of abuse
@RegularCars I keep hoping that I'll see my car in one of your reviews, since a lot of them are in my area. Well this was the closest one yet, since you literally drove by my house lol.

Nathan Rumancik If you trust someone not to damage your car, even accidentally, they shouldn't betray that. First thing I do is find the rumble point when I get in a friend's car
He said in another comment the dude is an old friend and he's just fucking with him by acting like that.
It sounds like he's just busting his balls to me.
@@martyjehovah It's still annoying. The video is for entertainment. If one of the participants in the video is being whiney, it's annoying to watch. I don't care if it's his friend, brother, father, whatever. Annoying and whiney.

I was always under the impression that these were beetle based. I suppose the beetle and the golf share similar underpinnings too though.
+Ryan Sardachuk Any of the smaller cars vw/audi sold between 1998-2006 was on the a4 platform.
+Ryan Sardachuk I wouldn't call it "Beetle-based" but Golf based. The Beetle was based on the Golf.
+Neil Davidson That's right, the New Beetle used the Golf platform, just like the TT.
Not really. VW Polo, Lupo and Audi A2 use different platforms, A03 and A00.

"Mr. Regular stalling a car!?" It's all good, stalling DOES NOT hurt anything, except this particular owner's ego. :-P
Yeah, that was pretty cringey
I was considering both or possibly a Porsche but living in Michigan I think the quattro will be important

I think the new ones look spectacularly good
+Andrew Wittwer for some reason I thought these Audis were mid-engined, until I watched this video
+Andrew Wittwer I agree. It'd be like a mini R8.
When it first cam out I it gave me the impression it was Audi's interpretation of an updated original 60s Porsche 911.
One of he best car designs of the 1990s, inside an out. A triumph for VW/Audi
Last sentence is someting i'll take from this video :)
I love when these videos get philosophical and deep. Well done as always.
I like the first-gen TT, but to me it's one of those cars that only looks right in a certain color- in this case, silver.
TheInflicted Oh no the Silver just looks sooo cheap
I could watch these videos all day, and during the weekend I usually do.

that piece of advice at the end has in retrospect made all 4 car choices i've made in 11 years of driving seem like great choices.
I used to like the 2nd generation TT look better, but now I like the 1st generation better. So I bought one. No shame, I love this car lol.

Been waiting for this review for sooooo long. I have a 2002 TT.
Thought it stood for "Ta-Tas!"

I always thought TT stood for twin turbo even though it's not, but that kind of labeling is not uncommon for the Germans
That would be call biturbo.
OMG, I don't even want an Audi TT but I could watch these reviews forever....
It's ok Mr. Regular, I stalled my Miata at least once a day for the first two weeks after I got it.
Thanks Mr. Regular, this concept is one I frequently find myself trying to explain.

Looking into the TT I found this vid and between the "ball shaver" and "the finite laps around the sun" I found myself buying this car the next day... I like the Audi TT. It looks good, and the girls like it when you show up in one. And they are also capable of a lot of hp.
+Talford Winstonworth I bet you get 0 respect from guys because your name is tallfurd winstonwerthless
+RadioMuse1
But why should such a thing actually act worse than it's Golf (particularly R32, since that was also AWD, but was known for feeling more planted) and A3 brethren? Maybe it's just the styling that convinces us that its; supposed to be a "sports car" which results in higher standards. I guess I wouldn't know since I've never driven a MKIV Golf or A3 from this era. I just know the TT was chippy.
I own the 225 horse tt at 18 years old. only have one friend that can beat it. have a few bolt ons and it's damn fun to drive.

Now.
It's funny 'cause here in Europe this car is actually considered very, very badass and sexy looking :P
the TT is a woman porsche
Nice camera angle at 3:40.
The 180 hp model is meh. Try out one of the 225 hp quattro models. I had one and absolutely loved it.
I only love mine when it's not breaking down and it breaks down a lot unfortunately and I'm not even hard on it.
Mr Regular did a subtle and eminently classy job of making the owner look like the chump he is.
@RegularCars I keep hoping that I'll see my car in one of your reviews, since a lot of them are in my area. Well this was the closest one yet, since you literally drove by my house lol.
You forgot about the first gen that would lose traction on the back wheel at high speed and kill ppl.
yep, this car is aerodynamically challenged
DDOGJENKINZ the very first Gen didn't have the small wing in the back and cars would lose control on the autobahns. There are a couple of videos here of the accidents.
Mike Wollinger the spoiler on the rear solved that problem.
Miner Mhowardzz that's what I said. The first generation didn't have, then they added it to fix the issue.
Yup! I almost wrecked one because of that! Craziest thing ever!
