    The 308 (and Pininfarina’s other designs of the era) being designed to accentuate the driver as opposed to drawing attention away from the driver and onto car itself is a really interesting takeaway. The low belt line and hood makes the cockpit look bigger and more important; all the lines pull to the center, and are simple, so as not to pull focus away; it makes the person seem more important. My eye naturally gravitates to the cabin, and it’s fascinating.

    • @shanec9672
      @shanec9672 4 месяца назад +1

      I feel like, while Pininfarina's designs are consistently phenomenal and have been for decades, it's also the fact that it's a ferrari. You don't just get one of those without having unlocked upper-middle class life or higher, and everyone wants to know who you are and what you do because they want to know how they can do it as well, and wouldn't you know it, a chance just technically pulled up next to them at the gas station to ask, to see if their cheat code applies to your version of the game as well... If they even want to share.
      Seeing one of these in a situation where you actually can talk to the driver is just a rare moment when the rich person is both easily identifiable as a rich person, and close enough to you on neutral social ground for you to feel okay to ask about it.
      Forgive me if I'm going out on a limb here, but I doubt I'm the only person who imagined, in some small section of their brain devoted to various pipe dreams, that they could meet the right rich person at the right time, and offer or say or be the right thing, and just like that, get drafted into the rich person's slipstream of wealth. I feel like there's some vestige of that lurking in every average person's brain, and seeing one of these park at the pump next to you is enough to activate it and make you shoot your shot, or at least gauge to see if you can, on some level.

    Fact: in 1998 I fixed the air conditioning on a 1985 308 GTSi quattrovalvole when one of my college professors found out that I was good with wiring and could read Italian.
    Fact: The owner's manual has a complete set of schematics (in Italian) on the flyleaf.
    Fact: the only car to date I've ever worked on that simultaneously had blade fuses, glass fuses, and ceramic fuses (think old VW) all in the same steel access panel under the passenger dash that could shatter your kneecaps if it ever dropped.
    Fact: At 6'2" and 250 lbs and size 13 shoes at that time, I can absolutely vouch nobody over 5'7" could ever comfortably drive this car.
    Fact: This did not stop me from test driving the car after fixing it and stopping at Taco Bell. Hint: the window opens very small; order burritos because a Nachos Bell Grande won't fit.
    Unrelated fact: My 8th grade science teacher was a dead ringer for Tom Selleck. So much so he was occasionally mobbed in public. So much so that when K-mart came out with a designer fragrance named Selleck, they hired him to sit for the magazine ads (mustache-down, several hotties adjusting his tie and lapels) as the real Tom Selleck wasn't available.

      Honestly, as a Ferrari owner you could have had it much worse in the 80s. I met the owner of one, and he said the car is just fast enough to fully enjoy it on B roads and it's been very reliable since he owns it. Sure it's no 512 or a 288 GTO, but definitely a Ferrari nonetheless. Anything hitting almost 150 mph in 1980 is impressive really.

    Just when I was starting to think he'd sold one of the cars off (he kept the Ferraris in the garage and the Bronco and his wife's Lexus RX in the driveway, the rest in storage elsewhere), I'd see him driving that one around. He purportedly won the Delorean in a raffle or something, but I have no idea where he got the money for the rest of them. None of them were brand-new, but still, he was a retired school teacher!

It provides a feedback that I can't really describe. The motor is just good and engaging with it via the shifter is just happiness defined. I have a '91 NSX, and there is no doubt it is the better car, but it does not provide quite the same sensation that the 308 does while driving.

At idle, that mechanically injected engine made sounds that were just special. It certainly wasn't the most ergonomic driving position but it worked. Overall it just felt special to be in, a fabulous design mated to an emotional and characterful drivetrain.

    One of the best looking cars ever made. There's no mistaking that for anything else but a sports car. It's a shitbox that requires an engine rebuild every time you just think about driving it, but it's a fantastic looking and sounding pieces of automotive art.
    Also I don't think that's an unreasonable request for Tom. Just ask him politely and I'm confident he'll oblige.
    I'll have to disagree that this was the only game in town during the early 80s. You had the 911, the Countach (which rhymes with poon pop, which could be either a sexual act or a flavor of an adult ice cream bar) and don't forget Lotus l

    I'm a plumber in a city containing some fairly wealthy citizens and have worked in alot of thier homes.
    I had a long-time customer that owned a Dino and I think he would agree with your statement about these cars being better to look at versus to drive. The dining room shared a glass wall with the garage, allowing the Dino to be seen from inside the house. Awesome idea or vulgar vanity? You be the judge.

    Ferrari 308, the car that made you.... The man, probably a sports/rock star in 1981. I had the privilege of knowing someone who had the grand daddy during those days. Justin's dad had a 512. BB. These were space ships when I was young. The Contact wAs God. But these were not far behind.

    Now I'm going to pay attention to Magnum driving that car. I've discovered that any time David Hasselhoff jumped into KITT and took off there was already a stunt guy with a 2nd steering wheel chain linked, or if Michael was driving and not "KITT", there was a tiny round steering wheel in place.

    An "annoying, shaking, falling apart mess of drunkenly assembled parts" that reels me back in a few seconds at a time is an apt description of my 84 RX-7. I'm a young dirtbag of an owner, so some of it is surely my own doing (or lack thereof), but boy does every ride start with some anxiousness. Sometimes I think I'd be better off with some stable transportation, but then I think of summer moments of high RPM shenanigans with a buddy.

      Same when I got my mr2 aw11. Car didn't run for 20 years. Once I figured out what was wrong. I hobbled it together and took it to the highway in the most misguided decision of my life. (I did get plates tho but a little too early.)

    Man...I remember my first car show/auction. There was a 79 308ts on the block that was in practically perfect condition wit 58,000 miles on it. I passed it up and ended up losing bids on a Toyota Pickup, a 3000GT, and a few Jeeps. Didn't even bid on the Ferrari, because..well...Ferrari. Didn't think I had a prayer in the first place, and I had zero experience actually working on and pricing exotics. The thing sold for $19,000....well within my budget. I was inconsolable for weeks. I worked at a Dodge dealership at the time in the Service Dept. shagging cars. One day I ended up talking to my friend Mike who used to be a technician at Ferrari of Denver. He said he really liked working on all the exotics that came through, but while the individual jobs paid bank there just wasn't enough volume to really make a living at it compared to the high volume cheap jobs fixing Rams and Caravans. First question he asked when I said I could have got that Ferrari 308ts in perfect Ferrari red and matte chrome rims with tan leather... I haven't been that instantly in love with a car till I had a shot at a DeTomasso Pantera in neon blue with black interior (Literally the one from that episode in Breaking Bad when Gus poisons everyone down in Mexico.) Was down in Rio Rancho on a job interview. Told myself if I got the job I'd get that car and eat ramen for a year if I had to. Ok ramble much? Anyways... First question he asked was "How many miles were on it?" I said 28,000. "Well there's why it was so cheap. Bet you anything it hasn't had it's 60K service yet." Apparently the major services on 308's require re-shimming the valves and all kinds of other complicated stuff that can run $12,000 or more! All the $$$ I'd have saved buying a cheap Ferrari would go away the minute I rolled it into the service drive. Yikes!! I'll stick with the Pantera lol.

      If you can’t afford a lousy $12 grand you don’t belong in a Ferrari. I also bet you it’s gone up in value way more than the $12 grand you may have had to spend on a major service.
      I bought one and at its doubled in value from what I paid for it. A 16,000 mile 79 red on tan. I love it I will be buried in it. A Tomaso so it’s a kit car with a ford mustang engine in it right ? 🤷🏼‍♂️🤣🤣

    • @Roadiedave
      @Roadiedave 4 месяца назад

      @@jasonknight5863 It's not the price, it's the model. Shelling that out for a 308 is like dating a hottie that can't cook, or a high dollar escort with no benefits just to say you got with a hot chick. I'd rather have the Pantera than the 308. Ferrari's got looks, but it's as high maintenance and low performance as any hot chic I ever dated. If I'm dropping 5 digits on a standard maintenance, I'd like a 0-60 in less than a week. I can stomach the price if it's worth it. Sounds to me like you'd rather pay to be kicked in the nuts just to say you own a Ferrari. Gimme the Versace Mustang over the discount Italian any day.

    To the General Public (i.e., non-car guys/girls), this is THE Ferrari, malaise-era non-performance aside.
    It’s still the best-looking car (as you say, from any angle) they ever built, 40-something years later. In the daytime. When you don’t need the headlights on.

    Sometimes I hear about guys complaining about not being tall and they're upset about this. Then I notice that most car reviewers like Mr. Regular are 6ft. or taller and complain about not being able to fit into any of the fun cars. I'm 5'8". Being tall sounds like it's annoying. I think 5'6" would be ideal for me.

    The Fiero bit is wrong, it wasn’t even made until ‘84. Miami Vice had 2 fake Ferraris you may be conflating. They had the original Daytona, which was a Corvette, a real Testarossa and a fake Testarossa, which was based on a Pantera.
    Also, the Dino 246 was ‘67-‘74.
