  • Quitting my job without a backup plan was definitely one of the scariest things I've done. Deciding to quit my job was a long process and there were a LOT of times I thought maybe I shouldn't quit and just stay where I was.
But if there are clear signs it's time to leave your job, eventually it gets hard to ignore them. And those clear signs as well as a strong gut feeling I was better quitting job without backup plan than struggling through it was why I left hairdressing and why I quit my career.
Quitting a job without plan b definitely wasn't easy and I had a lot of changing careers anxiety about it. In this video I want to share with you why I quit my job as a hairdresser, how I quit my job without a plan b and how to decide if it's time to change jobs. But just because this is how I decided to give up my career, doesn't mean it's necessarily good reason for you to do the same. Everyone's situation is different and if you're thinking about leaving job with no plan, it might give you more to think about and help you come to a decision for yourself. This definitely isn't a how-to video, more of a quit without plan story time!

And think we have no idea what we’re doing and will sit there and correct and correct and correct.

Thank you so much for this video- I relate to every single point you made. The past 6 months it has definitely taken a toll on my mental health, I’ve had to take lots of time off and I’ve been in and out of the salon. I kept telling myself that this is what I want to do, and honestly I hadn’t come to terms with the fact this career is not for me until now as I’ve literally hit rock bottom with it lmao. But I’m just saying thank you for making this video for making me not feel so alone in making this very hard decision of quitting. ❤️

I'm so glad this video was helpful for you! You are 100% not alone and sometimes its better to give up on something you thought you wanted so you can do something way better. Hope you're doing well ♥

I've been doing hair for ten years and I relate to pretty much everything you said. I love the communication skills the career has giving me in connecting with people and doing updos, but that's about it. Thank you so much for posting this. It's hard to talk about in the industry. I've been toying with the idea of quitting for years. Quarantine has me seriously considering it again. Thank you!!

I felt that there was a lot of shame around quitting because everyone else seemed to LOVE being a hairdresser and I felt kinda odd for not feeling the same, but in the end you just have to do what's best for you no matter what other people might be doing. It's tough but I'm glad this video could be helpful to you :)

I’m glad you realized it before you put too much time and effort into it. And thanks for openly talking about it. These are the types of videos that can resonate with people who watch development and growth content.

Honestly when I was going through this I desperately wanted someone to just tell me that it's okay to give up on something you realise you don't want to do so I made this video in the hopes I could do that for someone else :) I'm so glad the video resonates, thank you for watching!

I've been at it for thirty-eight years now. Getting to where I loath going into work each day. Not sure what to do. The tips keep me bound to the back of the chair. But I'm starting to really think that if I don't call it quits real soon, I'll be in a seriously bad mental state.

New subscriber here! Love how transparent you are in this video. I have had so many thoughts about whether or not I for into this industry. I have graduated from beauty school over a year ago and have yet to work in a salon. I’ve been procrastinating lol. Thank you for creating this safe space for us. God bless sis ❤

Hey Courteney , my name is Akira.
    I kinda needed some advice.
I’ve been doing hair professionally now for a year. I loved it so much in the very beginning when I was assisting and learning new color, extensions, and products.
Recently over the past 4 months I’ve been feeling down, depressed, anxious about everything when I come into the salon. I’ve started thinking that this is something I may not want to do the rest of my life.
I feel like the long days are catching up to me, and not everyone is always happy even if I put my all into their hair. I feel like I always have to post content, and that’s something I don’t regularly do in my normal life and I think I’m just stuck.
I’m feeling like fed up with hair in all now, and I feel bad for leaving the good 20 clients I’ve gained, my amazing boss, and new coworkers willing to learn and stay passionate. I know I have to choose myself and be happy in the end.
I have recently been looking into some other fields I may be interested in like nursing fields, dental, veterinarian school, and even some ideas for a small business one day…
I’ve thought about maybe hours changing in the salon, less days, fun color clients, and just natural hair services up to 2 hours max on maybe like 4 people a day but I’m not happy..
I’m sorry this is so long but I had to vent out lol…
I thought talking to someone who had done hair that and been through it could help me with my decision and get another point of view. ❤️❤️
My pros as of now are:
    Amazing boss for starters
    Beautiful place
    Snacks,drinks for clients
    Learning everyday
    Offer top $$$$ services
    Beautiful photo section
    My cons as of now:
    Losing passion
Not enjoying color because I am still new at it and slower (always feels risky when toning)
    Upset clients are very discouraging
Long nights - can be changed but that still doesn’t always happen (color corrections, installing extensions, added services take much longer)
Pleasing everyone is not possible - can be very discouraging too
Who wants a stylist who’s feeling like this to, I would want my stylist to be happy while doing my hair not depressed about it you know 😥
I’ve thought about nails, and esthetics but that may still have me feeling like this.. I think a break from the beauty industry alone would be good to see if I just need some mentorship and go back.

      Hey Akira,
Sorry it's taken a while for me to get back to you! I totally understand where you're coming from. I went back and forth for a little while before I decided to leave hairdressing because it was a really hard decision. It's not always going to be fun, but I think if it's getting you down more often than you are enjoying it that can be a red flag. Something I find can be helpful is thinking about your life in 3 years. Can you picture yourself still doing hair in 3 years? If not, it's probably time to try something else but if you can, maybe you just need to do some tweaking to your current situation.
If you want to chat about it please feel free to dm me @courteneylouise on instagram, I'd love to know how you're getting on with things now :) ❤

I was a hairdressing apprentice and student for a total of around 2 years. I quit when my managers made ominous comments about denying us our basic legal rights during the Christmas crush period, because money, and it was the second salon I had worked at. Every salon I worked at had a toxic environment for one reason or another, and the good places I wanted to work at simply didn't want me, in large part because I was male (one even told me so). I loved the job, but hated the work environment and how the training system works in my country.

Ugh that sucks! I'm so sorry you went through that. It's really a shame that the industry is known for being toxic - I think it puts a lot of people off! Are you continuing to do hair or have you decided to try something else?

I am currently getting my business administration qualifications while working in an admin role, between this and hairdressing I worked in retail!
