Thank you for this video, I been doing hair for 11 years and I just feel so burnout. I work a part time now and still I want nothing to do with hair. I work for Aveda most of my career and it’s a good company but this career is hard and people think is so easy. You deal with dramas with coworkers, rude clients and people who think they can get a free service from you but willing to pay other people. I started college this year and praying to God for direction but the industry is not that great and people don’t respect your profession…
I hear you girl. It is an exhausting profession. Praying for you as you prepare to change directions. I wish you so much happiness and success ❤️
I am an INFJ stylist. I am almost 30 years in the profession. I work in my own space.😁 For anyone reading my comment, I also have dealt with entitled and rude clients...especially since 2020. Keep the faith and thank you for sharing your journey.❤
Im an INFJ stylist too!! 😄10yrs in the bizo, its so interesting meeting all sorts of ppl and doing ppl studies. Ive slowed down alot because my health and being exhausted. But cool to see theirs others like me out there!
Thank God for all the hair stylists. I'm 44 and the policy I grew up with is buyer beware. If you don't like the haircut, too bad! Your stylist isn't your fairy godmother. People pick shit that's impossible to do for their hair type, or the damage is too great or they aren't Beyonce. The owners of chain salons need to protect the stylists that work in their salons as they control clientele.
It's a very physical job. Standing all day, twisting and turning, your arms and shoulders and hands in constant motion. And the beauty shop or barber shop has always been a place to gossip. It takes a huge toll on your mental health. The girls are young, they want to be friends, y'all go to the clubs together, someone's boyfriend texted that bitch Jen who we all know will sleep with anyone! And Katie saw Jen buying a drink for Tyrone so ya know they're not just texting!
It's stuff with the stylists but then it's stuff with the customers cause your friends or family might come there and you have personal stuff going on and sometimes you're in a mood but people just give you attitude. There's no being at your desk being miserable and still working. You have to put on a happy face to cut some screaming kid's hair that wet his pants and is sitting in your chair and the mom tips you the change from a $10 for a $9 haircut +tax and you know damn well you want to give it back because she must need it more than you.
My best friend is a my stylist. She did the chain salon for 7 years and was miserable. She has her own salon and I don't expect her to do my hair for free. And if she does that don't tip me crap, I'm still putting it in her purse. I'm a lawyer, everyone has a question for me whether im at a bar, kid's party, funeral or in a bathroom stall. You get 1 free question because that's conversation, then I'm on the clock because that's legal advice.
Pay and TIP your hair stylists. It would be a very ugly world without them.
I’m feeling like this now. I was a popular stylist for 6/7 years and then I just started to hate it and it’s mentally draining and dealing with others including employees and salon bosses are so stressful. My back has started to go bad too so now it’s extra worse. I’m thinking of quitting completely and I’m sooo okay with it.

That’s why U need your own clientele & to be your own boss.. it’s different when you have your OWN.. u can pick your own hours & it’s more freedom.. this isn’t a business where you want to work for someone .. you WILL get burnt out .. you have to have your own
I have my own clientele and space it’s still just a dead end career at the end of the day. I’m shutting down in time for the new year to start fresh. This career is not worth it.

I have done hair dressing for almost a year now and just quit a booth rental. I’ve been miserable… my mental health was going down the drain. I was so unhappy. I felt I wasted my time in school. Not an easy job. I really needed to hear these things from a formal hair dresser.
I worked as a hairdresser for 12 years, hated it after 5 years and kept going , finally left to attend business schools and I wish I did it sooner.

I've been a hairdresser for 34 years and love the atmosphere and I've had some clients for that whole period. I've had my own salon for 25 years which is much better as when I had my children I could do the hours that suited me. But, it can be a hassle with staff issues and awkward clients etc, so totally get where you are coming from. Now, I'm 50 and struggling with my neck, shoulders and back and been diagnosed with repetitive strain . I'm considering giving it up before I'm in constant pain, so this is something to think about if your considering a career in hairdressing. I think we go into this thinking its glamorous and fun but soon realise its extremely hard physical work. Goodluck x

@@stylebyariel it has been very hard on my body. I am 5’9 and my back and neck have taken a beating. I don’t think I really understood why I love being alone on my downtime from work. It is mentally draining sometimes. I think I understand more why I like my alone time. I have to regroup. I love serving others, making them feel so good about themselves with color /highlights or a nice haircut. That is the joys and reward of the job. As you know:-) I thank God for the talent he has given. Thank you so very much for making this video. You learn a lot being a stylist. I think my path is changing to a new direction. I cut part of my knuckle off about 2 weeks ago and did not go get stitches because I had 3 more colors I had booked that day. I should have canceled them and went to get stitches. (New shears) I have learned now that I am supposed to take care of myself, it is not selfish to care about you. I am learning:-) love to you 😘 and thank you!
Wow. You worded all of that so perfectly, I couldn’t agree more. It’s also crazy that you cut off a chunk of your finger... I did the same thing!!! But I DID get the stitches! It’s so true though, what you said. We spend all day taking care of others, making sure they look and feel their best, but at the end of the day we have nothing left for ourselves. I’m ready to leave. It’s taken a tole on my body taking care of others over materialistic things that to be honest, doesn’t really matter. Plus clients act like they lost their arm over some hair do or makeup you didn’t like on them. I’m tired of losing my damn arms and wrists how about that lol.

Iv been doing hair for 10 years and Im burnt out. 2020 was pretty much the final breaking point. Everyone was begging for us to open only to treat us like crap after we opened. I just don't know what to do as my next career but I'm giving myself until the first of the year to figure it out. All I know is I'm ready to have nights and weekends off so i can actually spend time with my husband and daughter.

I recently left hair school , but this is something I still want to continue my journey and a diffirent path , I had a very bad experience people in my school aren’t helpful including teachers , students are backstabbing one another , it’s a fake toxic environment to be in , you can be the nicest person there and people will still talk bad about you . It was a lot of judging and competition. This place has drain tf outta me , even dealing with rude clients . It had took a toll of my mental health . I believe this place wasn’t making me happy , but this is something I want to do and still carry on to continue.
Awww I'm sorry you've had a hard time and a negative experience so far. Unfortunately it seems to be a common thing in the beauty industry 😔 but I strongly encourage you to keep going! If you still feel like this is a passion of yours that you want to continue, it's worth it! Just because it's tough now doesn't mean it always will be. There are amazing people in the beauty industry as well, you just have to find them ❤️❤️

Finding a job we enjoy for long-term is difficult, I think. I see it as a relationship. At the beginning it’s very romantic and exciting and then it becomes habitual, not so exciting.
I think most jobs are tiring, in some areas more than others.
Maybe we just need to do a job and get creative when things get challenging, like change the setting as you did.
I am looking into becoming a hairstylist. Im a mom of three children in grade school and I want a flexible job. We’l see 😊

I gave up my career after 22yrs! I just got so tired of seeing stylists backstabbing each other and when you work in a commission based salon their are certain ones that take take take! Very vicious career and tiring!
Yes! I couldn’t agree more. It’s exhausting and disheartening. But good for you for leaving when you knew it was time for you to move on, even after 22 years! That takes courage ❤️🦋

From my perspective being a hairdresser is a life. My partner has been a hairdresser for over 50 years yes I said 50 years. He is currently in the hospital with a heart issue and can barely breathe but what did he do, he called me to make sure that that his clients were happy and they were rebooking. He's been a hairdresser since the 70s and he absolutely enjoys the creativity. I come in this young woman for stepping away before becoming a hairdresser for 30 years and being very bitter about it

got my license in 2008 after attending a 30k aveda institute. hair salon jobs are not easy and not fun. the often toxic work environments can make it all even worse. every one is just done..

Been doing hair over 10 years, I have found the key is to not push yourself and to not let clients push you around either
Me right now! Been working at Great Clips for about a month and I absolutely HATE it because the clients aren't necessarily rude to your face, but if they do not like the haircut, they get it for free. Here's the messed up part: they call into the store and complain that a certain stylist doesn't really know what they are doing and need training. Management doesn't care if you don't have training, they will put you through this until you are actually struggling. Then management steps in and takes action. This has happened to me but the client has changed their mind midway through the service or at times they would agree to what I was saying just so at the end they can complain. Personally I can't do it anymore because people are so mean and training hasn't taught me anything. I don't learn in groups, or through "e-books", I learn through one-on-one training..
😔 that's so unfair, and frustrating not having anyone to turn to because management is part of the problem. I hope you can explore other options and find somewhere that appreciates you so you can move on. You deserve so much better ❤️

Manager is SUPPOSED to train you in the beginning when you get hired as a new stylist, If not then they are unprofessional. I'm sorry to hear about your terrible experience, that has to be just that particular Great Clips because whenever I first started my career, they understood that I was fresh out of Cosmetology school so they trained me for 2 days...I picked up on it quick so then i immediately went on the floor. I would have my station set up right next to the manager and she would come help out whenever I needed it. In the beginning I remember I needed help with men's haircuts especially with the blending part because I did not get taught in school about it. So whenever I would cut the sides and the top, the manager will come over and show me how to blend. Over time I got the hang of it but it all takes practice and repetition.
I did hair for 16 yrs I just got sick of doing it lol....and I hate dealing with rude people lol....alot of drama like you said

Loved this video & glad you explained it. Its like you still love it but sometimes life happens and you gotta figure out what will be best and having that commute is a lot , I use to commute like that but I would have to leave 2hrs early because the traffic to the bay is so ridiculous. I've also heard that salons can get "messy" i mean it is a lot of women that work at salons lol but I definitely feel your client's just knew that you were gonna end up leaving. But obviously hair is a passion of your because now you are able to help millions of ppl out through the internet with Video so thats really amazing.🖤🖤🖤

I have always been a sensitive person. Over the years I have developed anxiety and depression. Clients have never been a problem. I enjoy clients. I don't do well with the mean and hurtful things that stylists say about each other. I have learned to look coworkers in the face and say, "I don't care, and I don't want to know about her personal life. I'm here to pay my bills and go home." I have a stylist friend that I visit, and we talk things over, and how to cope with problems. I burned out and now I am becoming stronger by hanging kin there

I do hair extensions from home part time aslong side other part time job.
Even doing hair part time it’s still super draining . More mentally as if I’m not doing a clients hair I’m on my phone replying to them. It’s a lot more work than people think it Is. And that’s not even mentioning when you have a difficult client.
I’d love to just work my other job as my life would be a lot less stressful but the pay for hair is way better

You are so brave and bold! 💪Kudos for recognizing something that no longer made you happy and trying something that does! Being a PT groomer, I know the mental and physical burnout you experienced. I too quit a kennel I worked at because I felt like it was becoming more of a production line... my body and brain were breaking down.. just cutting cutting cutting..I would come home after straight 10 hour days on my feet sooooo physically tired, FULL of dog hair.. I couldn't even cry if I wanted to.. I lost my passion for it but am slowing getting it back but on my terms. I groom a few clients from my home so I get the thrill again of turning hot messes into butterflies but I no longer burn out. You never know what the future holds for you. Take one day at a time. Your hairdresser experience has touched so many people especially during covid so I for one am ecstatic you decided to put your experience into tutorials on RUclips. I commend you and look forward to any other journeys that you would like to share❣

This is exactly how i feel 😭 i've only been doing hair for a year, but i just can't keep doing it. Im currently transitioning out of hairdressing and it's SO much more emotional than i thought it'd be... its kind of sad to leave because i fear disappointing my clients but its just not the right fit and i have other passions :/
i understand i am a hair stylist and i been doing it all my life and just quit and i loved the salon and doing hair its just some walk in people i dont know are so mean and disrespectful they have no patience and want everything and dont want to pay but mmost people are very nice but i get it i feel the same way
Exactly! Some people are so kind and make the job fun, but others are so mean and dealing with them takes so much out of you in more ways that one. I relate to this so much , 8 years in and I hate it at this point. I have my own suite own clientele and it’s still so much . My body aches daily. The expectations these days are crazy . Everyone one comes in with a picture and wants exactly that. There is no longer any passion or creativity in this career for me. It makes me so anxious instead of happy like before. Mentally I know I need the break 😢 thanks for your video ❤

As someone who is an artist, I love the creativity, products, and transforming vibes of hair dressing... and on the same hand I am also very internal and introverted by choice.
I went back to doing hair about 8 months now. I hated the corporate job I was at and wanted more creativity in my life.
I have done hair for the last 14 years on and off, and this was my last go.
ENERGY TRANSFERS, and people will suck your energy out of you! I can really see it now... for me it's not worth it anymore.
I am greatful that I decided to try it out at a salon once more... but NOW have solidified that it is the wrong path for me. I am looking at other jobs now so I can leave ASAP!

I'm so glad I found this. I'm not a person who would needlessly allow myself to get discouraged, so I evaluate everyone's input carefully. But I am an introvert, and I wasn't sure whether I should start Cos school or not. I am already in a draining service career (legal assistant) that I despise. It is super catty & exhausting with the other female assistants that I work around, and work overload. I had been having thoughts that Cos industry would be different than that. But if my motivation is to run from cattiness and an exhaustion, I feel I should look elsewhere. Thank you so much for your honest words. Again - pls don't feel as if you've discouraged me in any way, I am old enough to choose for myself but the things I was running from were cattiness and exhaustion, they are my dealbreakers. So I just ain't going straight from the frying pan into the fire, no ma'am.

Honestly girl, I’m still trying to figure that out...
for the time being I’m going to continue working pretty much full time on growing my RUclips channel but that’s all I got for now. I’ve thought about going back just because I know I’m good at it (ngl lol) and I can make good money doing it but at the same time, I know I wouldn’t be happy. It’s confusing; to say the least. I truly wish you the best of luck in finding your next passion. What I CAN say is that ultimately I’m glad I left because I know if I stayed I would still be miserable, and life’s just too short for that. Follow your heart and your gut... we’ll never know what else we might enjoy doing if we never try! Best of luck to you on your journey ❤️

I’m in the industry now, haven’t actually had consistent clients yet, working as an assistant. The Salon industry is so toxic, if it’s not the stylists it’s the other assistants. I make nothing, some salons I was basically a glorified Janitor. Clinging to the hope that this industry will be more rewarding but I’m considering moving back home from LA and switching careers.
The industry is terrible. If you don't fit in it's a good thing.

I already have back pain when standing for too long especially around my period, so this won’t work for me then. Plus I hate hearing about people’s stuff that’ll drain my energy. And weekends are very important to me and my family!

Hi Tiffany! I hope cosmetology school is going great for you so far! I definitely don't regret going. I learned a lot, and most of it I wouldn't have been able to learn otherwise. I didn't even go to the best school, but I found it to be an incredibly valuable experience. I also wouldn't have been able to become a hairstylist without the proper training and even though I no longer work in a salon I wouldn't take back those years and that experience for anything. If it's something you're even slightly interested in, I completely recommend going!! I hope you enjoy it ❤️ (I also think I might make a video on this so thank you for asking!)
do not waste your money and your time sister..hair ...style is the last that you want to do ,,.. no weekend off including working on sunday,,, i have working for 25 years . there too many hair salon in the neighbor then before , you will make no money even if you are good hair style . you have no medical benefit , no vacation ,,, ,, just like you working in the flee market...hair school only taking your money and teaching only very basic haircut ,,, after you finish school ,,u, no have no experience. nobody will let you cut their hair ..ok... you will working a hair salon as a shampoo girl .. maybe lucky a couple year learning ,.some senior customer will let you cut their hair ,,, so you going to have a long way to go ,,,,also too much competition in this business now ,, working in a company is much better ,, will give you a peace mind and have medical benefit and vacation ,, so i not recommend to be hair style for you ...

Yes! It's still something I think about sometimes. There's just a lot that has to go into it so I personally feel like it would have to be the right time and right place but I think it would be so cool to be able to make it happen!
If you're even a little bit interested in taking the training, I'd say it's worth it. The amount of time it takes to get licensed is really reasonable and maybe unlike me you'll be able to stick with it for more than 5 years haha. I know a lot of hairdressers that are really happy in their careers even after 20+ years. Good luck with whatever you decide ❤️
@@stylebyariel Yeah! I agree! About the timing and the place..for opening your own salon..If you have talent and you have the experience definitely look in to it when you feel ready.. I'm thinking about doing the training it's 2 days a week training so I could work part time.. it's a 8 month course..its pretty costly..though!..but not as costly as some other training places..You get certified at the end.. I specifically asked if I could open a salon with this license certification? they said yes but get a great insurance! :) I would have to gain alot of experience etc.. I was thinking to open a salon in the sun in another country☀️. Later down the line..an easy going business with bright colors, with my favorite music blaring..😁 Near the beach..
Also a mobile hairdresser is cool if you have a car..
Hairdressing is a job you can do for life.. come to it when you want.. people always need hair cuts and colors👌 I also have many other passions for work that I could probably still do on the side..Thanks for the advise🌟💜 Deciding soon!:)Good luck with everything you decide too👌🌟

Yes Some folks can drain the lifeforse out of you , it can be a lot of fun too but at the same time some clients love you then a month later they drop u I had cancer and I came back and some clients dropped me and saw the girl 2 feet away it’s a false friendship they really don’t care and always want a deal plus this industry doesn’t pay holidays vacations sick leave or health care

I am sorry but your video its really bad for starting hairstylist, I am currently on my 2 1/2 year as an assistant. Its challenging and hard but I done many other jobs before, and I can tell you everything is not easy. I am still sucking it up, but your mentality is weak and good for you for quitting, just dont quit on your other jobs.

After years of selflessly serving others and putting up with the toxic industry. 30 years in some cases. Not every job is the same, yes.
