I’m so happy you posted this now. When I was in school I felt like I was one of the best and I felt so comfortable. Now being in a salon after less than a month I feel like I suck lol. I’m just going to keep my head up and practice practice PRACTICE.
Same here. I was going to booth rent and now I’m assisting and doing front desk. I am getting hands on training but I feel so behind because of covid and not being in school as much
Im 32 & finally decided to get my license!! Career change and I was a little insecure about being a little older now, but ay Gotta follow your heart ❤️ Great things is Im far more prepared for the business side 💇🏽♀️
I graduate December ughhhhh should’ve been July but covid happened and then I got into 2 car accidents ughhhhhh push me back almost 100 hours. But December 4th can’t come fast enough YAYYYYYYY also I started July 31 2019
This is such good advice Sam. I still remember my first client in the salon fresh out of Cosmo school, she wanted a perm that looked like “Taylor swift curls”. And let me tell you that is not what she got 😬 I felt like I was thrown to the wolves, with no support from other stylists! It’s hard to start any new career.
Honestly, I feel like your cosmetology journey has helped me discover my dream of becoming a certified makeup artist! This really helps me know what to expect as a prospective cosmetology student and what to know if I do end up opening my own cosmetology studio.
I got my license July this year! Started out assisting in feb. It definitely has not helped that I started out mid Covid so I have been disappointed with what my expectations were vs the reality of being a new stylist post pandemic. I honestly thought I would get a bunch of clients once quarantine ended but lots of people were still scared to get their hair done and/or I primarily get major 5+ hour color corrections that I definitely undercharge for because I'm new. I keep reminding myself that I've only been licensed for 3 months. Lol thank you so much for this! It's easy to get discouraged but your videos have helped me so much over this past year! 💕
I am SO happy you posted this video! I just got my first job in a salon and I started out assisting, and I just started taking clients this month. I’ve been so insecure and overwhelmed because I feel like I’m terrible at doing hair, but hearing that I’m not alone in this is such a relief 😅
Hey Sam ❤️ My name is Nicole I started watching your channel about 3 years ago when u first got into beauty school and at the moment I wanted to go so bad too!!!! That’s how I found u on YT. My husband and I just got married and we couldn’t afford it so I didn’t , but I was a loyal subscriber and saw ur journey . I just wanted to let you know that your videos really inspired me and motivated me during these years that I’m finally going to beauty school starting Monday! Ahhhh I’m so excited . You inspired me more then you know Thank u so much for sharing your journey P.S my school is an 1hr 1/2 away too but I took ur advice and even though it’s a hike it’s better then the ones In my area 😆
idk if this helps anyone but if it does, great! i definitely agree with sam said. i constantly beat myself up for not doing more in my cosmetology career but everyone's journey is so completely different. i went to a beauty school that wasn't really your traditional beauty school but rather a program through my local community college. i started when i had just graduated high school (2015). i graduated in september 2016 and got licensed in november of 2016. however, i decided to go back to college because i had the option to get an associate's in cosmetology (even though realistically i'm not sure how much you can do with that). as of recently, i still am not where i am with my cosmetology career, i am still going to college while actively pursuing cosmetology. after seeing how the current pandemic has affect the beauty service industry, i am deciding to continue with college so that i can have a stable job that can support my expenses to pursue my cosmetology career. so to conclude, don't beat yourself up if you are not in the same level as someone else who graduated in your class. there's people of different age groups and skills sets that go to beauty school so no one person's journey is the same. i've been licensed for nearly 4 years now and i am nowhere where i want to be, but i know what i am doing to get there. i am currenly working at a chain to help support me and my college expenses. personally, chain salons are a great start but you can get burnt out very quickly so i would only recommend to stay in one for up to the first 2 years of your career. also, another thing that i would like to add, don't let anyone belittle you because you chose to go into cosmetology instead of pursuing a degree and going to college.
Love love love your videos. I graduated a year ago today 💗💗 so fun to see how far I’ve come, but it’s definitely the natural human in me thinking I could have done more. This video put it into perspective! Thanks for all the good tips!
Thank you so much for this video! I definitley feel all of these things. My story is the same exact as yours. I’m 26; I did cosmetology in high school had my hours but not my license and went to college right after, worked a 9-5 and wasn’t happy. Now I’ve been assisting for a year and have a chair 2 days a week and I love watching your videos on my down time. Thank you!! ❤️
Hey Sam I am from Colombia but I am studying hairdressing in Australia. I started this year in cosmetology school since February of this year and due to the pandemic I am not able to return to school and have my face to face classes. So it has been a difficult times but let me tell you I feel extremely identified with you, I am 26 years old and I have a lot of doubts on my mind but when I watch your videos I found them very inspiring and motivating. Thank you.
You made some very important points about using different color lines, and different hair textures in models. That could definitely trip up the game. Thanks so much for sharing, and wanting people to benefit from your experience and wisdom. Are business classes taught in cosmetology school since a lot of stylists want to own and operate their own salons?
Some schools do incorporate some of the business side, but it seems like most don't. My school did have a business course built in, but it didn't teach anything as far as operating a salon (more so how you can increase your income as a commission stylist, selling retail, enhancing the guest experience, etc.)
Thank you so much Sam, this was well needed. I recently had a cosmetology interview, and although it went well, I started to overthink things such as: “If I get accepted, what am I going to do after the program?” - “Will I be making stable income?” - “Will my work even be good enough to work under someone?” I became so afraid I almost changed my major! But thanks to my support team and your tips and suggestions, I will be moving forward with the cosmetology program. Thank you , again ✨💜
Yess this video couldn't have been uploaded at a better time! Sam, I just passed my state board on Sunday September 20th!! It feels so surreal and I start in the salon in a few weeks!! ❤️❤️ I'm so exited!!
Can i just add, thank you so very much for your videos! I was curious about beauty school, so I went on RUclips to see people’s experience or advice and your video came up! Ever since then I have been hooked on your channel and guess what?! I started beauty school September 2020!!! 🥳 again thank you Sam! Love your videos! Wish you nothing but success babe!!! #fellowfollowerfromHoustonTX! 🤘🏼
Thank you so much for this! I’ve been working at a franchise salon after being an assistant right out of Beauty school and they’ve only been letting me do cuts and are constantly on me about my time. Although it helped me a lot to know what it’s like to work on clients. Including barbering, I really want to start working at a full service salon so my creativity isn’t limited. I’ve been a little bit scared to take the leap and I’ve been wondering how I can choose a salon. I would like to start off as commission like you said. I’m just trying to find the strength to do so. But this video was really helpful because it makes feel like I’m not alone on this journey ❤
I am stuck in this account ^^. Love this girl. She's great. I keep watching many of her videos here. Thanks for all sharing your tips and advice with us.
I was originally supposed to be graduating this December but due to Covid I can’t until May.. I’m so sad but thankful because I haven’t learned anything from Cosmo. My teachers are all old and don’t want to teach us anything besides perms and old haircuts I’ve taught myself how to color hair but I’m still struggling a lot which is why I’m going to be purchasing your classes because that’s my only hope at this point! I don’t want to graduate not knowing anything 😭 I appreciate you and your advice so much it’s getting me through this tough, frustrating time rn. thank you 💕
I recently started watching your videos ! I went to school for dental assistant! But I’ve always wanted to do cosmetology since I was in high school! I just always put it to the side ! But starting next year! I want to go to school ! Paul Mitchell school 🤞🏽☺️ !
Thank you for this video I’m a mommy of 1 and I been putting off going to school and just when I signed up covid hit so I post poned going at all and now you have once again made me excited to continue with my decision to go for cosmetology as a career ❤️
This was so inspirational. Thank you for being so raw and real with us. I’m so excited and nervous to start school this august but I’ve been watching all your vids on cosmetology school and I feel so much more comfortable😩💕.
I’ve been a hairstylist for four years now and I still struggle with trying not to compare myself to other. I envy you you’re amazing hairstylist but I have to remind myself so am I. We all have our strengths and weaknesses.
Your videos inspire me so much considering I graduate cos school in may of 2021 . I've been going through a rough patch but your videos definitely keep me motivated and inspired ! 😊✂
i graduated in june from beauty school. i was receptioning at a salon prior to that, and as soon as i got my license they moved me to stylist training. it’s still a big transition to me 😂
Thank you for this! I just graduated in the middle of august and had a salon job secured but had to part ways due to contracts and my family being apart of the military and having to break said contract so now im in a big ruff looking for something and dealing with confidence going to a new salon!
I truly appreciate the honesty you pour out in each and every one of your videos. I just found you today and I look forward to watching your journey. Subscribed! :)
Thanks for this Sam! I just started school a month ago and I’m so nervous to get out there and find the right fit for me!! ♥️ but this was super super helpful!
So I’m working on getting my licensed last year September 2020 I had graduate but I just want to get licensed I just hope I don’t forget certain stuff because I’m bad with tests
I know it’s different for everybody but generally yes. The school I went to only focused on hair. We would do state board manicures and facials and that was it. It’s nice to have a cosmo license because you could switch career paths since it covers a nail and esthetician license but I personally wouldn’t have experience in nails or facials to start directly on a new career path.
No! My cosmetology school also did nails, facials, waxing, eyelash extensions and then hair cut and color you can use your cosmetology license for any of those things but the school mostly gets hair clients
I feel like i barely know how to do anyghing after 4 months in school will the places you first stwrt at that know you are new be like okay helping and teaxhing you? I feel like definitely if i assisted they would be?

I started cosmetology school and ufff... There are many fresh out of high school girls that know more then me. It makes me feel so low. I needed this
I’m so happy you posted this now. When I was in school I felt like I was one of the best and I felt so comfortable. Now being in a salon after less than a month I feel like I suck lol. I’m just going to keep my head up and practice practice PRACTICE.
