Best Friend In Your Thread I needed to hear this as I am 29 and I start cosmetology school the 24th. I’m so scared I’m gonna be older than most of my peers, and I know nothing about doing hair. I’ve switched from the medical field (EMT/CNA) to go to cosmetology school.

Honestly, I think it's better to start later. You take it more seriously because you KNOW this is what you want to do, so you get way more out of it. I noticed when I was in school that a lot of the younger girls weren't as into it and were more prone to drama... and as a result, didn't learn as much as the older women.

I so agree about college. I went for four years and never finished bc I changed majors so much (I hate that certain credits won’t count anymore if you change degrees it’s a waste of time and money) and I really only feel smarter in the science and math category. Everything else just seemed to add on to what HS taught me.

Girl, I feel this so hard. I started University at 17 and "decided" my career at age 15, I built all my classes around my future "major" and I dropped out of University after my first year. I've always been very academically inclined but also always had a love for the arts and makeup and I've worked in a hair salon for over a year now. I never considered beauty school or even a job in design or an artistic field because my family always told me that I should get a degree and have an education behind me, which lead me to believe that being successful in a creative field wasn't even possible. Education is important, but not necessarily University and there is nothing wrong with going to beauty school. There is such a huge stereotype around hair styling as a career and this idea that you won't make money or can't be successful. I'm struggling now with deciding what kind of artistic career I want haha. But I appreciate this video so much, the corporate world doesn't always mean instant success and not everyone fits into it, even if you are "smart", it doesn't mean you can't go to beauty school. Careers are about personality and choosing what is best for you. Thanks for this video :) it helps to hear others stories that were/are in the same boat.

This is me! I got a degree in sciences and it’s just not for me. I thought it was and I enjoy the field I went to school for, but I didn’t have enough passion to outshine the thousands of other applicants. I think now I’m realizing that I did what everyone else wanted me to do, instead of what I wanted to do. I’m 26, live with my parents and hate my job. I think it’s time to do what I want to do.

Too many students take on massive loans before they have the life experience to know what they really want out of life. However, I’ve always had the interest in cosmetology. I always loved hair and makeup, but never thought I’d be able to go to school for it. It wasn’t what my parents wanted. So I ended up starting community college and to be honest I hated it. I think you are my SOUL sister! I felt the same way! I wanted to be a hairstylist since I was 6 years old. I got good grades, wanted to drop out the first semester of college to do hair and makeup. My mom and other people said, I am 'too smart' for that and spending 16K (at the time) to do hair is stupid and I won't ever be successful if I drop out of college. I was beyond bored in school. I graduated with a teaching degree and got a job as a substitute teacher right after. A year later I took an English teacher job overseas (Taiwan) and realized on the third day, teaching isn't for me. I was like WTF!!! I broke my teaching contract, started tutoring online and traveled Asia to figure out my life LOL. I felt so lost and realized the answers were within. The pandemic made me realize to change careers. Now, I am looking entry level beauty school jobs to get my foot in prior to cos/beauty school! :) sometimes we go down a detour that brings us back home!

I can totally relate! Exactly I after I graduate high school and cosmetology school. The high school I went to offered cosmetology as a course and finished the year after I graduate. I moved states before I could even take my state boards so I had to transfer everything down to the state I moved to and take the boards there. It took me two tries and I been out of cosmetology school for three years. The main point is I took a break from working in a salon because I didn’t like the environment or the places there were in town that I moved to. I decided to go back to school and get a business degree so I have something to kind of fall back on or one day open my own salon with the knowledge of how to run a business. I’m only 23 and I feel rushed but I want to have a job that makes me happy and that I can decide my schedule and stuff. That takes time and trial and error. I love doing hair and makeup but I don't want feel like I'm forced to or have several people tell me how to do something because they don't like it or I'm taking to long

I am a bartender. I am 36 and I've been doing that for years. The money is good but the hours SUCK. I LOVE THE BEAUTY INDUSTRY. I have played round with the idea of getting my cosmetology lisence. I have been watching your videos and I am thinking more and more about it. I actually said it out loud to a friend yesterday! She was like "you totally should!! You'd be perfect!" I really feel like I would feel so happy doing that. We shall see

I don’t know if you will see this, but I am so glad I found your video. I am 47 and have two Masters degrees. I make less than $50,000 a year and have double of that in debt. I always wanted to do hair but was also told if I didn’t go college I wouldn’t be successful. I have the ability to finally go now, but I feel like I might be a little “late in the game” at my age.

I agree, college degrees cost a lot for most people. Those general ed courses are helpful though, may be boring but the point is to help to make you more "well rounded". You do learn a lot but yeah, you are either into it or you aren't and thats ok.

I'm on the middle of law school and as much as I love it I want more. When I graduated high school I didn't have the strenght to tell my parents that I wanted to go to cosmetology school and now I am so torn because I still want to become a lawyer but would love to be a hairstylist as well and I don't know if we can afford it or have enough time for both

That’s kind of how I’m feeling too. I still have like three years to go for school since this year I’ve decided to change my major (which took me two years to decided in the first place!😅). But I at least want to become a nail tech for some side income. I’ve always been interested in that, I just can’t fathom how I’d be able to afford finishing college AND getting my nail license

I also got my degree in Communications and struggled to find a job. I'm 31 now and still have no clue what I want to do. I kind of feel stuck now because I make really decent money and have a mortgage so I fear if I try to change directions, I won't be able to afford my house.

  • @AshleeRose

I relate to this so much. I had no idea what I wanted to do after high school. I loved editing videos and so my counselors would tell me to go to college to become a video editor. I liked and still like editing but it's not what I want to do as a job. I never went to college cause of bad anxiety and depression at the time and now I deal with chronic illnesses. The past few years I've been doing my own hair and so many hair dressers have told me I should go into cosmetology cause I'm good at it. I didn't take it seriously at first but the past few months I've been considering it. My mom has that idea you mentioned how you're supposed to hate work and have a 9-5 job. so it's hard to convince her this is something I really wanna go for, she wants me to get my college degree and have a office job D: also the thing is we can't afford cosmetology school. but anyway I loved your video, I hope one day this can happen to me.

Ashlee Rose have you looked into cosmetology school at a Technical/Community college? I’m enrolled in cosmetology school and it is 100% paid for by financial aid. I am not in poverty and a mom/wife. Just throwing it out there:) Good luck.

UGH. This sucks so much. My high school guidance counselor wouldn’t allow me to go to cosmetology school my senior year bc she insisted that I had to get my advanced regents diploma. So I went to college and dropped out in my second semester for cosmetology school. Once I got into the salon I had a horrible reaction and became allergic to everything. If they had allowed me to go to cosmetology school in high school maybe I would have found out about my reaction earlier and stayed in college. I agree about college classes being irrelevant to your major too. I was so mad I was paying so much for classes that had nothing to do with what I was majoring in.

I stay home but I have had to push my husband to look for a different job twice. I can always tell he needs a change when he comes home and complains every day. It is draining on him and no one should have to be in a job they are miserable at. He loves what he does...it’s always the companies and managers that he needs a change from.
I’m glad you found something you love and enjoy! I also think it was smart to finish school. College was not for me. I got an associates degree and completed half of my credits for bachelors. I wish I had finished because I don’t see myself going back, (shudders...haha) but I also don’t plan to work. Staying home with my kids is my passion.
If I did go back to work I loved being a receptionist which you only need an associates for many times!

I think caring for your family is a full time job, and what works for you and your family is no one else's business. It's awesome that your husband has you to identify when he's becoming unhappy or burnt out at a job and you can give him the push to move on to something else. My boyfriend can get the same way - and same thing, doesn't necessarily hate what he does, just gets fed up with management, and when I start to notice his attitude towards work changing, I encourage him to look for something else. We gotta support our partners and vice versa!
