  • I've owned my Scion xB since 2009, when I bought it new. It's been the most dependable car I've ever had. It's never been in the shop for repair, never been on a tow truck. 210,000 miles and hopefully headed to 300,000.

    Thank you for this awesome real life review on a reliable vehicle. I'm getting sick of the "top 10 reliable cars" list that people post... of brand new cars with no history. ANY new car is reliable! But drive a car for over 200k miles and a few years on it and then we can talk. Thank you so much for this grate TRUE review.

    Bought my 5 speed 2008 in 2013 @ 65,000 miles in AZ, drove it to Cali, Nevada, and Utah and she runs smooth. It has an oil consumption issue also. I was using the 0 - 20W and it was eating it up quick. Now I use Delo400 15 - 40W and it takes awhile to go down. Plus, it's a weight recommended for high mileage cars. Replaced the clutch @ 180,000 after hauling 2 big 400lb guys through San Fransisco hills (they killed my clutch lol). Moved it back to my home in Hawaii and now its approaching the 200k mark. This car is a beast!!! Just replaced rear brake pads cause I haul tools around, go camping, and carry my whole ohana everyday. I wouldn't trade it for any other car. Gonna repaint it soon also. And, it's on its 3rd windshield mainly from Arizona and cross country driving. Mahalo for the video. 🤙🤙🤙

Have owned 272 cars in 50 years, these outshine all others. 4 wheel vented disk brakes, tilt and telescoping steering wheel, large cabin, sit up high as in an suv. drivers seat raises, lowers & reclines. Head room is amazing. Big doors make it easy to enter & exit. 4 speed automatic is bullet proof. The car is quick. 158 hp 162 ft pounds of torque. Very comfortable ride . Simplistic is nice. Not to many buttons to figure out, visibility great. Indeed it is an under rated car. People who own these love them.

    Just traded our 2009 with 100k on it for an off lease 2015. I liked the 09 so well that I wanted to get a low mileage last of the line 15 while I could still find one. Took the old one on a 2600 mile trip to Yellowstone and back this summer, didn't miss a beat.
    The only fly in the ointment with this vehicle is relatively poor MPG by today's standards. Other than that, I can't complain about anything. A tank, really.

It still runs and functions like a champ. Soooo reliable. The only thing I wish it had was bluetooth audio built in, cuz the iPod connectivity to my iPhone 6s Plus is janky, with like 3 adapters on it just to work with the lightning cable and charge my phone. Other than that, it's the best car I've ever owned!

    • @AdventuresWithMe00
      @AdventuresWithMe00  7 лет назад

      That's similar to what I've experienced Ben. I don't like the way the iPod interacts with the stereo. Once you plug it in you can only use the radio buttons to control the iPod, which is too clunky to be useful. I just set up the iPod to play what I want it to first, then I plug it in. I'm sure cars in 2017 have much better integration systems with iPods and iPhones!
      Best of luck with your 2009!

    Nice Review. My 05 XB has 258K. Never in shop except once when a front wheel bearing went out at 250K miles, and the inside heater blower went out at 255K. I was able to replace the blower myself for $72 part cost. A few weeks ago I noticed a little hesitation when starting off from a stop. Just for the heck of it I replaced the spark plugs and all 4 coils. Now the engine runs like brand new again. Car is still has very tight steering with no rattle whatsoever. Exhaust system and underside of car is in great shape. Other than the above repairs that i had to do, this car has been perfect. Will probably last another 250k.... MUCH longer than I will.
    OH....I did replace the plastic wheel covers with a nicer looking set that I got from Walmart for a very cheap price. They look like real alloy rims and make the rest of the car stand out. I also put on an after-market custom style set of tail lights because they looked great. The metal body (skin) is pretty thin, but has not been a problem. Car is a very dark blue and still shines like new with no rust etc. Interior shows no wear!!!
    I have owned about a dozen cars over the years and this Scion is the most dependable by far. Besides being an excellent built and dependable car, what I really like is the amount of room inside for a small car and the excellent driving view you have with all of the big windows. You also sit very high in the seat so you get to see everything even is you are 4ft 2 eyes are blue. OH did I mention that this car is a blast to drive! Reminds me of my go-cart days :)
    It is now a extra-car for us now, but I like so much that II will probably never sell it

      thanks for that review! One thing you mentioned I think I forgot in the video is that I also have the original exhaust system on the car. In my experience with other cars that seems very unusual.
      The other thing you mentioned I forgot was the wheel covers. I've lost 3/4. It seems like the metal retaining rings inside loosen with age and don't hold the hubcap to the rim very well.
      Great review!

    I've got a 08 xB2 with 306k on the odometer, and so far it's still ticking and I drive about 180-230 miles a day and mostly issue free. It burns a little bit of oil but it's been over 130k miles ago that Toyota did the oil consumption fix, switched it up to 10-30w oil it's been good.
    Only issue, there are some but that damn rear beam is probably the biggest one and it's killing my tires. Worst of all I've hit up several Toyota techs and alignment places that deal with (minivan style) rear beam suspensions and tell me that there's literally no fix for it. The power locks, power windows, and a few other things don't bug me as much as that dreaded rear suspension eating up the rear tires. #madcamberyo
    Still waiting for Toyota to call me back so they can replace the Takata airbags.
    So far so good with my 08 xB2, love how the 18" tC2 wheels look on it, just wished it had a tad bit more power and a 6 speed gearbox instead of 5.

I bought it reliability, 4 doors, good space for it’s size (I would not want something larger, can’t stand big cars), because it has a manual (I do not like automatics ), the center gauges have also really become a preference for me, too. Plus it’s pretty zippy. Only way I’ll sell it is if we get an EV. Otherwise I plan to let my 2 yr and 5 yr old children borrow it later in life.

    • @AdventuresWithMe00

      That's a great deal. Yes, there is a lot of space in the car if you utilize it with the seats down. With the back seats up, there isn't really a lot of room in that back area. But if you live in an area that you don't need AWD, the Scion would be a better choice than a RAV4 (if they still made it).

    I have a 2009 Scion xB I bought new and it has been a great car. Currently at 182k I had to replace the alternator at 172k and the rest has been standard maintenance (brakes, tires, batteries and oil changes). Also had to replace a couple of windshields and the drivers window and I replaced the belt when I had it off replacing the alternator. I carry a band PA most weekends so it is loaded far beyond what was ever expected.

    Excellent review! I own a 2011 Scion xb RS edition in the voodoo blue color and i love this car!!! My box has 145k at this time and it still runs great!! I keep up with the oil changes and keep rotating my tires every oil change. No major work just plain oil change and tires. Very roomy and i love that its zippy for a 4 cylinder. I agree with you, if this one goes out i would go and purchase another one like it. Only wished they came out with a 6 cylinder option. Thanks for the review!

      I am in the same situation. 2005 manual transmission with over 220k miles. Purchased in 2005 , and I installed rain shields, front tower brace (sway bar), cold air intake. Original clutch. I drive it for a living. If I did not abuse this car it would probably extend the life of the car by ten further years. I have had it nearly 15 years so I really appreciate it. It burns oil (and probably needs a valve cover gasket). I had alternator failure in September of 2019 and had the car towed. I went with toyota alternator, belt and battery. I have had misfire codes in cylinder #4. I exchanged the plug in that cylinder and that code cleared. I still have catyltic converter codes (even though I swapped it out months ago with a universal converter, though I did not touch the o2 sensors).

    Just bought my girlfriend a 2010 Scion TC. 53K, about 9K with everything for a dealer. I'm really impressed with the car. Good looking, loaded with goodies including a power sunroof and moonroof... Same engine...good performance, excellent transmission, tight handling...just a really nice car. Cannot believe Scion is no longer being made.... WAY better deal then any other Japanese car in it's price range!

      Eddie Please help! I am so glad someone mentioned the AC compressor. I have just started thinking about buying a used Scion but I went on line to look at reviews. I saw on one video, where the guy bought one and found out that there was a problem with the AC compressor. He said this is a known problem about Scions. This guy was also a manager for a car repair shop. When he was talking, his words (because of the AC compressor) were basically "stay away" from the Scion because of the AC compressor. He said that at this point, he could not figure out how to fix the problem because he had different mechanics look at it as well. He said he might just sell it because of it. Can you tell me exactly what they did to fix yours, and about how much did it cost for you to get it fixed? Thank you sooo very much because I would rather know beforehand about issues, rather spend money on a car that may not be able to get fixed. (or is too expensive to fix, if I come across that.) : )

      Girlygirl 1 yes sure my compressor was ok the condenser was leaking so made the A/C unit not work blowing regular temperature air i took it to the Toyota dealer got it fix, one weekend & $535. so they ask you if you want to check the car for a fee 15 Point checkup i think, and whatever you pay for that checkup goes to the fee of the work you need. I hope this useful information

      @@Catholic101A. Ok. So I definately have a better understanding now since talking to you. The guy who had the Scion and was a mechanic acted as if it was a problem that was almost impossible to get fixed. I've heard of many people saying that some of the Scions blow "not so cold" air. But the guy was like...do not buy this car, the AC situation will not be worth it for the cost. $535.00 is kind of steep, if it were to happen to me, but maybe worth it, if it should need it. But I probably wouldn't go too much over that amount. Anyhow, I guess I am still considering because they seem to be great cars. This is a 2006 XB that I am considering. I had 129,000 on my '09 xB when it was totalled out from under me... no problems whatsoever. Traded it then for a 2013, same color, same options, with 5500mi on the clock. The 2015 now has around 50K on it, I have since retired, so it isn't getting 110mi four days a week on the commute. Just put tires on it, factory tires didn't last, same as the first xB. Went up to 215 tires from the stock 190s, makes the speedometer right, and they seem to last longer. Looking forward to growing older with this car. Previous commuter was a repoed & mistreated '95 Corolla, acquired @115K, had oil consumption problems. I re-broke it in running 10wt then 20wt oil for in three 1000mi changes per wt. Thermostat had been removed?? Got it to no oil consumption & 34mpg. Sold it to my across the street neighbor @260,000, he's still driving it, 320,000 last time I talked to him a year ago. (I have since moved) We also have a 2013 Venzia, had to replace a wheel speed sensor on the traction control system @ about 15K, all warranty. It now has 72K on the clock, still has the factory tires, still have tread past the wear indicators. My 2007 Tundra just went over 50K. Never been to the dealer other than the initial free oil changes. Had to put a battery in it about 18 mo ago. I bought my Mom a new 2013 Tacoma when she wanted her last vehicle when she turned 86. She passed last spring @ 90 and left me the Taco, with 18K on the clock. I run Mobile1 in all my Toyotas, 5w-20 in the Winter, 10w-20 Summer in vehicles with less than 50k, 10w30 Summer over 50k. I change at 5k except in the Tundra & Taco if I have been towing, then I just watch the oil. Tundra is a 5.7L. Venzia is a 3.5L. Taco is 4.0L, all vehicles are automatics. I change all fluids when the factory recommends. I have an OBD2 scanner, a good one. If you are reasonably handy this is a good investment. The Venzia just had an episode of "check engine" + two other lites coming on indicating traction control and air bag problems. Scanner showed flags for emissions control cannister 'solenoid valve high' and 'solenoid valve low' AND 'master cylinder residual pressure valve low'. Bout scared me half to death, checked on RUclips.... Put some silicone rubber lube on the gas cap O-ring, reset the flags in the computer with the scanner... 1000mi later ... crickets.. I love my Toyotas. Now: All my vehicles, silicone rubber lube yearly on gas cap O-rings, live and learn. Have several summertime machines with air cooled gas engines, Kawasaki v twins and B&S singles, use Valvoline 30wt in them, change at about 40 hrs or in the fall if less than 40 hrs/season. Motorcycles: 09 Star Stratoliner + 10 Star Raider, I use Yamalube synthetic 15w40. The diesels (1998 Generac 25kW Gennie & 2000 Kubota L3710D HST) use 15w45 Shell Rotella T. Diesels have 'freeze plug heaters' as well as glow plugs. We live on 2.3acres about 45mi NE of Denver @4850ish ft of altitude. Thank You, Michael in Colorado.

I know you get what you pay for but I'm not a big fan of car debt that goes over 4 years.

    I think the real secret to the Scions were the manual transmissions. It seems that the oldest ones I see with the happiest owners are the stick shifts. I still have my first off the boat 2004 xb and at 295,000 miles decided to change out the original clutch because it is just now slipping. At 275,000 miles, I changed the water pump because it was starting to make noise for $23 DIY. As soon as I finish the clutch, I'm planning to drive across country on a photo video tour. • @gbjib3827
      @gbjib3827 6 лет назад

      The marketing just wasn't right. Out the gate, yes you appeal to the youthful feeling of the car but strictly focusing on fickle youth and heavy mods was not going to be a good long term plan. Toyota implied that the cars would be on a fast refresh cycle and that really didn't play out. I was put off by the second gen Camry frame refresh. It may have appealed to a few more folks on the spaciousness thing but the quirkiness of the cars was not going to be a mass appeal thing. Not to mention, with the larger engine and heavier body, the gas mileage was going backwards from 32 down to 28mpg. Finally, Toyota was surprised that the boxy xB was selling so wel. They had really set their sites on the xA being more car looking to take the brand. I think that they really just wanted to focus on more car like modes like the Tc and xD and flubbed the whole magic of the Scion branding. The Subaru built FRS was a quality disaster early on. They had everything going wrong and were being brought in for warranty work left and right.

    • @AdventuresWithMe00
      @AdventuresWithMe00  6 лет назад +1

      I agree, the gas mileage should be better. The engine didn't need to be as large as it was, but I understand using an existing Camry motor. It's too bad they didn't just market it for what it was...good reliable transportation that appeals to people looking for great value.

    I have a 2008 XB with the 5 speed. 128,000 miles. Reliable is the middle name of this car. I bought it used off lease with 28,000 miles on it. I change the oil more often than most. 3,000 to 5,000 miles. Only use Mobil 1. The only problem I have had was an oil leak valve cover gasket. That thing was hard as a rock. On second set of tires. They look like they can go for another 30,000 miles. I just got back from a 3,000 mile road trip to the North East. I picked this vehicle because it didn't have a timing belt. I installed an aftermarket air intake and exhaust. That gives me a few extra horses. I haven't seen very many 5 speeds. That makes it more enjoyable to drive for me. My other vehicle is a 2004 Toyota Sienna with 137,000 mile. I have had more problems with it in the same amount of time as the XB. A/C broke twice. Too bad Toyota decided to kick Scion to the curb. Love my XB.

      Thanks Raymond, it's great to hear from another Xb owner. Looks like your Xb is not even halfway through its life.
      I let a friend of mine drive mine this weekend and he was impressed enough to want to buy one. At 215,000 miles it still rides very smooth and has never needed a clutch.
      I also only use Mobil 1. Probably the only issue I've had is that it does burn oil. Scion had a recall for this but I never took it in. I just add about a quart between my 5-7,000 mile oil changes.
      Thanks for sharing your own experience with the Xb.

    I love my xb same year I'm keeping it for life I did a road trip from Phoenix to Chicago and back nonstop and I had no issues. My biggest and only complaint is the gear ratio is too high. A 373 gear with a little more HP would be perfect. 72 MPH at 3100 rmp. anything faster is too stressful for the motor I think. My xb actually did better than my FJ Cruz through the mountains. I love this car Toyota fixed the oil consumption no questions asked. Only recalls is passenger airbags and oil for driver side door. At 180k I've had no issues none. Thank God. I'm extremely grateful for this car . Thanks for the video and God Bless.

    Love my 2009 stingray metallic blue scion xB. Toyota fixed the oil consumption issue at 140,000 miles. Now like it has new engine and does not use or consume a drop oil between 5, 000 mile oil change intervals. Love it ! .... plan on keeping it for a very long time, just to see how many miles can be put on it.. With lots of head and leg room for both driver and backseat passengers, plus plenty of power and good gas mileage, it is a shame and a disappointment that 2015 was last year made.

Being in 06 release series it came with a performance exhaust. it had excellent grip with the nokians and the traction control. I would literally dog brand new Subarus and Audis up and down Hoosier pass in Colorado. Sometimes they would pull over just to see what I had going on. I would still have that car today but the body was to tinny for me. I would consider a Gen 2 XB. The only thing that concerns me is the oil usage. It doesn't help that Toyota wouldn't let Scion branded cars be sold out of the same building as Toyotas. So any Toyota dealers that wanted to sell Scions needed to build a second showroom. My father was selling cars at a Toyota dealer a few years back and had to tell more than a few customers if they wanted a Scion they would have to make the drive to a bigger city.

      Hugo Fight Review I have owned both the 2006 matrix and my current 2010 Xb. I have the matrix to my mom when I got the xb and aside from not having a sunroof I love my xb. It is a much quieter ride and you can never go wrong with a larger engine. The A/C works much better in the xb I have noticed and I am getting 25 mpg with my box and I was getting 28 with the matrix. If you are more than 5ft 7in in height go with the xb. I am 6, 2 and don't see how I ever survived especially when I had people setting behind me.
      My only gripe with the xb is, there are no seat back pockets, there is no sunroof option unless you go for a release series (which is very limited) and there are not nearly as many cubbies for things in the xb. And the c pillars are MASSIVE.
      My gripes with the matrix is. Road AND engine noise were very invasive seating was cramped, that's all.

Add 4-5oz of miracle mystery oil....to continue the ring cleaning process, oil consumption will stabilize. I was using a qt per 500 mi. Congrats to her! I've got 10 years on mine and it still runs great. I bought a new truck, but kept the Scion because it still runs good and gets good gas mileage.

    I just bought a used 2008 Scion XB. I liked that its a "Reliable Toyota" vehicle. However, I've heard of an oil consumption problem with this engine, but I didn't know that before I bought the car, so now I'm paranoid it gonna have issues! Haven't had it long enough to know.

    • @AdventuresWithMe00
      @AdventuresWithMe00  5 лет назад

      The oil consumption issue is not really a big deal. You just have to check the oil twice between the 5,000 mile oil change interval. I do have to add oil to mine. It's an annoyance for sure, but barely diminishes my appreciation of the car.

      @@AdventuresWithMe00 If it's consuming too much oil, will the oil can light come on like when it's time for oil service ? .. or do you have to just check in between? Trying to determine if mine has this problem and what to check for or look for.

      @@PrettyMissAshley Check the oil about every 500 miles when cold on flat ground if it is low add till full if the oil light comes on its too late probably motor will be toast. 263k on my 2008 quart every 750. I drive 100-150miles a day so I'm adding a quart a week. Just check regularly don't forget 500-750miles. Keep oil changed regularly I go 5k miles syn blend 0 or 5w-20. Check,add and change on time you'll be fine. Bought mine with 126k still rolling.

    I have a 2008 xB and had to replace the transmission at 87,000 mi because the internal slip differential broke while driving in the snow and had the Oil Consumption problem fixed at about 97,000 mi (replaced seals and pistons). Because of the Oil Consumption problem Toyota extended the warranty at 150,000 mi. I now have 140,000 miles.

      I'm sorry and surprised to hear about the transmission. That's an unusual issue to happen on these cars. I'm glad you got your oil consumption taken care of. My local Toyota dealer would do nothing for me, but the car already had over 200,000 miles when I brought it in.

      Wow Glad To See All these Remarks. I just bought a 2008 Xb 5spd with 110,000 and I’m 62 yrs old. Love it . Wondering when I should change the Timing Chain and Water Pump. The Dealer saids Now. Any Imfo Out their. Would Appreciate it ! Thanks and Many Wishes To Everyone That Has a Scion !

      @@danielhernandezjr9606 Hi Daniel. From what I've read the timing chains do not need to be replaced. The belts, yes, but the Scion doesn't have that. My xB turned 249,000 miles today and the timing chain and water pump have never been changed. The car still runs fine. Don't go by what I say, you should do some more research and ask other xB owners.

      If your xB is under 150,000 miles they will replace it for free. Otherwise your looking at about over $4,000. They have to take the engine apart. Took about 4 days. At least you get a free rental from Toyota.
