Maximum Action is a retro fps love letter to the action films of the 80s and 90s. A neon bathed carnival of carnage where you rampage through nine movie inspired levels annihilating enemies with bullet time and insane weaponry to rack up the highest score.
This retro shooter has been in Steam early access for a few years now and despite a publisher shakeup with New Blood Interactive it is still seems to be on track with its recent update.
Sow how is Maximum Action early access looking these days? Find out in this review.
Maximum Action was developed by George Mandell and published by Balloon Moose Games. It is available for the PC through Steam Early Access.

Welcome back everybody. My first idea for this review was to call Maximum Action the zen garden of first person shooter but then I realized Garrys Mod fits that description better. Either way though this was a nice break from the typical games I play for this channel. Just sit back, relax and blow some stuff up, good clean fun. I'm sad New Blood isn't involved with this game anymore but I think this title has a bright future ahead of it and I can't wait to see it step further to completion. Anybody else a Maximum Action fan? Let me know in the comments.

well except gmod hasn't any sp experiences or levels unfortunately, heck it doesn't even have bots, because of the stubborness of the creator that " EveryThiGN mus tBE OnLine luZL LOLz HUrR dURR"
Basically: What to play after you've beaten a souls game
Yep, 100% correct!
The comparison between the soundtracks was insane!! The original sounds masterful, I can understand the backlash lol
You can never have enough excuses to talk about TimeSplitters
Truth.
IIRC there wasn't any specific event with New Blood, rather New Blood was interested in the score-attack arcadey John Woo angle of the game whereas the dev wanted more a slower more objectives-based experience, and when they disagreed he felt as though he wasn't in enough control of his own project under them.
TBH, after playing their first attempt of an objective based map (Jungle), I can 100% say that New Blood was in the right.
I hate Jungle just for the objectives. The game shouldn't be a rush around an open map like Far Cry to look for objective, because Far Cry has the tool and engine (and somewhat experience) to do that. Not that game. That game is a fast pace arcade shooter. Looking for objectives kills the pace of the game.
A lot of Indy developers releasing promising yet half done games.
Love the review! You explained the fire on release mechanic and how it gives you a bit more control over the slow-mo perfectly. Glad you were able to have some fun with that, it's one of my personal favorite features. Thanks for checking out my game, hope you stay tuned and have been able to try some of the newer updates!
I am so happy you analyzed this game! This is one of the most entertaining games I’ve played in a long, long time.
That moment where you've been subscribed since the guy was at 300 subs. Keep the great work, also, you're much better than Gmanlives :)
Dude thank you for sticking with me since the 300 sub days, that really means a lot to me. The audience is seriously what makes doing this a pleasure.
I can't say I agree on the Gman comparison though. Mostly because I'm a fan of his and I feel like I could learn a lot from him 😅
The jungle level now is absolutely insane, you can drive a tank and a dirt bike while dual wielding two M60's
The music being changed does suck a whole lot, however I’m still getting the game based off the great combat. Thanks for the review!
This game is just fun, bloody, crazy, and downright silly fun.
Great video , already subbed but I have to say you make great content and have great taste. Always look forward to your videos 💪💪🤘💯
Gosh love your vids! High production value...dont give up and keep it up, soon youll be highly famous bro 🙏
Thank you so much! That's really kind of you to say.
Blood for the blood God!
A fast-paced Max Payne without a character that has the health of a wet paper towel? Count me in!
Glad you finally covered this game. Nothing like dual welding shotguns to some synth music.
F.E.A.R., Max Payne and 80's action
What's not to love?
YES! Love the opening of this one with that music... lol
Oh come one that original music was fire
Keep up the good work KIRK :)
Thank you! I will!
I’ve been debating to play this game for a while but this confirms that I’m getting this
Nice! Let me know if you enjoy it.
An awesome video, as always. Keep up the good work, man!
Thank you!
I know the whole video is about maximum action but as soon as you mentioned time splitters I really wanted to hear your take on at least the first two. Love those games
😉
For years I though Double Action: Boogaloo was called Maximum Action: Boogaloo for whatever reason, so I got really confused when people started talking about this game.
love your vids
Thank you!
This is next on my list after Wrath: Aeon of ruin.
MY BRAIN GOBLIN IS GOING APE SHIT
You and Adam McDermott are the most under rated RUclipsrs by far
I personally prefer Hospital and Jungle's current tracks, the current ost was actually the one used before the game was picked up by NewBlood and I was sad when they got removed
Been playing since the first beta dropped pre-greenlight, it's fuckin great
Kirk by any chance do you have the old OST downloaded or did you find it on youtube?
I found it on youtube, you can also listen to it on sound cloud.
Time splinters is my favorite shooter along doom eternal, Turok evolution and dusk
turok evolution was easily the worst in the series but glad you liked it
Does the game have controller support
John Woo will be proud
"Give a man one gun and he's Superman Give him two and he's God." I'm looking forward to the modding scene with the end product. Imagine all the levels, the CAMPAIGNS that people could make. The weapon mods are already fun as is. I've been replaying the levels with Ebony & Ivory and juggling thugs for hours.
I was playing with Ebony and Ivory too! So much fun, the mega blaster is probably my favorite so far just because of how ridiculous it is.
Imagine if kavinsky make the soundtracks for this game
I feel like you could easily find better royalty free or stock music than that lol
"A blast to blast through"-Say that five times fast.
This game is very underrated
Considering there's about 30 minutes of content I'd say it's exactly where it should be
You played My Friend Pedro? I think the game is a lot of fun and underrated.
Yeah I played that when it first came out. I remember enjoying it but I don't think it hooked me as much as I was hoping for.
@@KIRKCOLLECTS
I beat around 3 times, even though I am not very good at it.
looks ideal after playing doom eternal on ultra violence
It's a good cool down game for sure.
@@KIRKCOLLECTS looks pretty fun
This game is a delight to play. All the levels are so well built. But what less can you expect from a shooter with slowmo.
couldn't you just mod in the old music?
or just play it it the background?
Hmm idk, should I buy Maximum Action or Paint the town red?
You should review Postal 2
Huh, it looks like the old music can't be brought back via workshop
I have more than one favorite Austrian.
Geese don't quack, they HONK!
Fuck I love this game!!!

Im the 420th like .like.Far Out dudee hahaha
I did buy this, but I think Trepang2 has the better combat flow since its more like FEAR. The enemy chatter is spot on.
Wish New Blood would take a crack at a Half Life styled FPS game. Pretty much no indie or AA is doing that now.
Half Life Paranoia was made using the Gold Source Engine with a very small Russian mod team. New Blood could do that too.
Finished both Paranoia and Paranoia 2 Savior. Really enjoyed Paranoia 1 with its metal industrial combat music. Hoping there will be a 3rd one using the Source Engine.
Two more fun Half Life 1 mod games are: Heart of Evil Napalm Edition and They Hunger.
Man what is up with Trepang2? There's so much potential there!
I wish Valve would make another Half-Life style fps game (yes I know Half-Life Alyx, but I feel like that's a whole new lane of shooters.)
There's a few levels in Dusk where I felt the Half-Life influence, but it would be fun if they did a full game with the Half-Life structure.
@KIRK COLLECTS, I don't know lol! Last update I saw was their adding dual weilding weapons. It was already supposed to be released in Early Access last year.
That Compound Fracture game will release before Trepang2 lol.
As for Half Life Alyx, I don't have VR, but Boneworks looked more interesting.
Neither 3D Realms or New Blood are tackling a Source or even Gold Source Engine FPS game.
I heard there is a fan remake of Opposing Force in the works similar to Black Mesa, but who knows how long that'll take or if it'll release.
I think it's called Operation Black Mesa.
This game would benefit RAndomised enemy spawns
probably better melee
It’d be a shame to see that soundtrack go to waste, I hope new blood can repurpose it. I really wonder what happened between new blood and the dev of this game, I really like new blood so I just don’t understand it, I genuinely couldn’t see them making bad decisions with games as all their stuff has been fantastic. I tried it and found it quite repetitive, I love FPS games but the lack of challenge just doesn’t grip me as much as others do, I hope this turns into something special but yeah I’m disappointed about new blood leaving I suppose.
It's a bummer. From what I can gather it seemed like New Blood wanted to take it one direction and the developer wanted to go another. Hopefully it was an amicable split.
@@KIRKCOLLECTS I'd say New Blood wanted to take more of a skill based shooter approach, maybe make it a bit more varied like dusk and amid evil and the development wanted it to be more of an experience, reliving an action movie I don't know, just what I'd think. It's a shame but the game does look like it has tons of potential, as you said in your video it is quite short so I think that's the main thing to address, levels . The gore and overall gunplay is definitely there, I just think running the same levels bets boring , maybe new blood wanted to add a campaign or something?
Newbld aren't your friends or the developers'. They ban and delete any criticisms and their early access promises of "involving the community" means Oshry playtests it and any suggestions or critique is countered with memes or bans. Glad that the MA dev got away from them. Hoe he can now do what he wants
As someone who is HEAVILY involved on the MA side of things, being involved since pre-steam, it really was a professional and polite split as far as I know.
The reason for it I believe is that NB added the "S.C.O.R.E" system to the game, where it added a bunch of donkey kong country style letter floating around the level in hidden locations. George found it to be WAY too arcade-y and asked to split. I'm pretty sure that NB could have technically just kicked George out of the team and worked on MA themselves so I'm glad that the split was as smooth as it was.
On the topic of Oshry's behavior, I don't wanna fanboy or defend him from criticism but from what I've seen he seems to be pretty honest about himself. I've personally had multiple (polite but firm) arguments with Oshry himself and have yet to be so much as told off, hell he even gave me a free copy of Amid Evil when I asked for it around the MA/NB split. He's been an honest and chill dude from my experience and that's FAR better than most studio heads, even in the indie-sphere. Most are either too busy being money hungry whores who think EA stands for "Excellent Advice" or are too far up their own ass to get a fresh supply of oxygen so seeing someone who's willing to be both chill and themselves is a pretty good sign to me.
@@wisecrack3461 Hey thats for the detailed response, that's great to hear it was a peaceful split and there's no bad blood. I hope both sides manage to bring out amazing games for us to play 😁
In a nutshell: devil may cry, the fps
Okay. This sounds like so babies complaining about ost. How good can the old sound track possibly be? 5:00 Oh. That good. Damn.
this game chews ass and kicks bubblegum.
This one i refunded. Just didnt click with me.
Lost all interest in this game after the developer split off from New Blood, this game has been in early access for far too long with far too little content to actually justify the development time, if I want a gun fu shooter id rather play a finished game and start another playthrough of FEAR
doomslayer is non binary
this was a joke pls dont hurt me
