TIG will always point out thin rusted metal real quick, good recovery though Scotty! Dont be dishearten, with TIG tacking on car metal the key is get in quick and get out quick bring the amps up to around 70~80 no up or down ramp and use a micro switch on the torch no filler rod and tight gaps, if it takes more than 1 sec to form a tack turn the amps up a bit.
Hi Scotty, I'm no expert however, I've done quite a few rust repairs 🙄. A couple of things that I've found helpful are , I start with a dremal type tool and grind around the perimeter of the rust hole , you'll quickly establish where the thin rusty metal is and where the solid metal is , from there you end up with a odd shaped hole. I then decide on what's the best , smallest shaped patch to make .Once ive made my patch I'll sit it in place , I prefer to use a sharp scribe to outline the patch as it give a very difinative line that you can be cut and filed out to . The patch will now perfectly with just a little finessing. Keep up the good work 😊
Glad to see you back at it. Hope the DC prep is going well. Have also just picked up my first unimig TIG however ill stick to my MIG for panel repairs for now. 😂
Great work mate But damn, this video is giving me nightmares tonight... not because you did an awesome job, but the sound of a dentist drill going off was making me feel unwell lol 😂😂😂😂
Looking good Scotty you did that no differen to what i would do ,, i like to know after you get out all grinding dust out from behind the weld what are going to paint in behind the weld that you can't see , to stop rust from coming up in future ?
@@blownhemi thanks for the reply Scotty the reason I asked is every time I've fixed close or on a gutter the old cars I've kept little rust bubbles always start in 4 to 5 year's I've tried a couple type of rust converters fish oil's but rust always wins the car's I'm taking about are old 60s LandCruisers I've had 9 of them over the years.... I have a project FC Holden Ute I need to fix a tiny bit of rust on the gutters and around where the windscreen fits so instead of fixing I'm thinking about cutting the roof and replacing it with a very clean cut I already have and fit adjustable seatbelt brackets from a a moden car inside the piler while I'm at it , so I still need to paint something good that hopefully outlast me to stop rust from inside were you can't see after welding
I think that instead of making a patch piece, I would have just turned the MIG right down, then just kept adding tack welds to the edges of that hole until the hole was filled. But that's probably because I'm such a terrible welder that I have lots of practice filling blowout holes with 50 little tackwelds lol 😎
Helping others learn the hard way, mate. You're a God send. I'll probably still fuck my welds but we appreciate the effort ❤😂 (Edit, as they say Scotty. "A grinder and paint!")
I'd rather watch you fix stuff ups and learn in your own shed rather than mega dollar builds in the Carnage garage. Scotty's Garage is so much more relatable to the average bloke making shit work with what he has on hand.
You dont choose Wagon life, Wagooooon life chose you bruh :-) Worth having a well damp rag handy and wiping the area between tacks to draw the heat out and stop warpage, Not bad!
Was just going to say this... and to add to the heat management subject, same goes when grinding the welds smooth, don't stay in one spot too long to add excess heat, also dab with damp cloth or blow with air for maybe every 15-20 seconds of grinding, cool it off, then continue on...
@blownhemi yes it was a bit cryptic. Sometimes I forget not everyone understands my sense of humour, or is in my head. Being on the spectrum people sometimes don't get where I am coming from. But anything from me will generally be in good humour or very matter of fact without any criticism connected to it. I tend to type as I think, which some people might interpret as being critical, but it is just how I think not a criticism. It is very rare that I put people down, it's not my thing.
Scotty, at least you're showing your errors & fixing them. Most RUclips garages don't do that. You did a great job there mate.

You might say it’s the worst welding and fabrication channel, but it’s the best worst welding and fabrication channel.

Neat! Just remember to coat the inside as well so it won't rust out again 👍
@marty3469 yeah, I've given it a spray. I don't know how good it is, because it's hidden, but it's something
Good job Scotty
all good things take time, small bites of repairs/work and eventually it will be all done.

I have do that on some pieces but not a big hole in sheet metal like this, it would put too much heat into it
