    Scotty sounds like we both had a very similar start in life. In 1975 I was 10 and we moved onto 10 acres in the country. Like you I experience all the joys that went with a dry dunny. Like you we had no electricity or water for several years. Mum cooked and boiled water on a wood stove outside. Getting washed for school was typically a lick and a promise in a metal basin, which was a real joy in winter. Our first "house" was about the size of yours which six of us slept in at first. My first bedroom (another shack) was built out of corrugated iron and only just big enough for my brother and my bunk beds, which we shared it with a kero fridge. Quensland summers are real pleasant in a tin shack. But despite some challenges we survived. Like you I got to buy some cheap bikes and cars and thrashed them around the back paddock. We might have started off dirt poor, but eventually through some seasonal work mum and dad got enough money together to start buying some Besser blocks. Took a few years but dad eventually built us a proper house with electricity and everything.

      Wow, very similar upbringing by the sounds of things. I didn't think there were many of us in that era

    • @DodgyBrothersEngineering
      @DodgyBrothersEngineering 3 дня назад +1

      @@blownhemi I had to laugh when you mentioned emptying the dunny can. The look on your face said it all. I think you have to had to have done it to truly appreciate that look. We might not have had much, but we had freedom in abundance. I even laughed when you talked about riding motorbikes without a license. I drew the short straw when a country cop from about 30 klms away nabbed me on my Honda XL 100 when I was about 14. Got the third degree and told never to do it again. So I didn't, I stuck to the back paddock till I got my learners at 17. How's this for ironic, the same cop gave me my open bike license. I had to ride down a dirt road till I passed a house, hitting 100kph, do a u turn and be back in one minute on a Suzuki GSX400. I did it in 54 seconds. Parked the bike and went inside and wrote out the license. Like you we shot guns and spent most of our time under the bonnet, building engines, and generally fixing cars. Cars were cheap back then. Many bought just to be stripped.

    You're AP6 story reminds me of a guy I used to work with at Superformance. He had a HQ Statesman with a big block / 8-71. Had ridiculously massive treaded tyres on the back and a spool in the rear so if he tried to turn a corner you could hear it screaming in protest. Had the 80's / 90's blower hunt going on. It was one of those cars as well. It couldn't drive by without you turning your head and your jaw dropping. Fiberglass front end. It was basically a drag car he was driving around the street. From memory he had Vic rego on it. Think it was featured in Street Machine way back when.

    Great stuff Scotty! Would have been worth a few cold ones & a BBQ over listening to it all. I used to live in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs & my dad at the time had a '74 Ford Escort MkI XL1300 & that was what got me started as a 5 yr old into cars. Dad also had a '51 HRD Vincent Black Shadow & a '63 Triumph Bonneville T120 so that got me into motorbikes as well. Every weekend was tinkering with cars & bikes. The Escort got written off & dad bought a '77 Datsun 180B brand new & he had that for 10 years. Only rust from living next to a beach killed it. I learnt to drive that 180B when my feet could touch the peddles. In 1980 we got new neighbours & he was into Holdens & Chryslers. About every 2nd month he'd have different cars & of course dad & him got on like a house on fire mucking around with cars on the weekends. That was when I got started learning how to fix cars. We used to go to a wreckers in Matraville & buy Holden engines, strip them down, rebuild them & sell them. When I officially got my licence, I bought a '72 Holden HQ wagon with 3 on the tree. Every panel on it had more hits than Elvis, It was olive green with tan bench seats. It was used to carry mine & my mates surfboards. We used to travel up near Forster on surfing trips. I drove that HQ wagon to work in Pitt St where world square was still being built. One day a foreman came into work & asked if anyone owned a green Kingswood wagon. I said it was mine & he said, I've got some bad news. I thought a truck might have backed into it but it turned out that a section of prefab wall came loose off a crane & squashed the front end of the wagon flat as a pancake. The foreman wanted to keep it quiet & asked me how much I paid for it. I lied & said I bought it for $1000 (actually $500) & they paid me the money. I bought mum's Datsun 200B with it & she went & bought a Suzuki Vitara Hardtop with it. The car stories could go on & on & it's been great listening to yours & reading comments.

One of them has gone to scrap, because she folded in half when I finally got both doors open, but the other has decent bones, so I'm not so sure she deserves to head that way, and then my brother in law has suggested a big road trip where we all buy cheapish cars and have a crack at a big trek with a bit of off roading so now I'm bench building a lifted XF Ute with a winch on the front, and that's not even considering the V8 XP falcon in my shed that hasn't had a wiring harness in it for 2 years...

But he still has his first car ever his xd fairmont originally a 6 cylinder auto but its now a v8 stroker fully built cant remember the trans, 9 inch rear and its practically now a drag car. It's not registered currently and it just sits in the back of the shop with a dead holly sniper efi system ☹️

    That Charger was sweet Scotty! Classic fatness, grey with black R/T stripes, mmmmm, sexual. I once owned a "White Knight" Charger in the late 80`s it was Amarante Red with Centrelines. I was a second year Apprentice Fitter & Turner and loved proudly driving her to Tafe one day a week and mingling amongst other Apprentice Mechanics, Fitters etc in the carpark, smoking her Eagers leaving at the end of the day. I still remember the smell of the interior. 2 of my mates also had them at the same time. I ended up swapping mine for a 4 door HJ Monaro running a 350, other mate traded his for a 308 Premier and last mate wrote his off pissed. What a time in history that was. Wish I could go back.....

    Car trailers can be total sht. Back in the late eighties borrowed one off then family member. VH Valiant with a 265 towing an XM wagon on the trailer. That was an evil handling combo with the trailer it turned out had four different tires and no equaliser on the springs. After experiencing it's interesting handling characteristics, I returned it.
    There's definitely a bit of science in it, used one a few years back and it was an unbeatable combo, then used the other trailer they had just bought secondhand, it was horrendous. I told the owner you can't let this one loose on the public and he tells me one of his mechanics had just told him much the same. They ended up doing a big rebuild on it with new suspension etc.
    Car trailers mate, they need doing properly.

    Hey Scotty love your story and I made a few wrong turns in life so never had anything special as in cars but my 1st car it was to me special, because it was my own car I paid for that I worked my ass off to have on my Ps. I didn't live on mum or dads pay cheque if I wanted something I had to get it myself...so please don't laugh but it was a 1985 Toyota Corolla Spirit 1.6ltr high cam sedan it was red with the sticker kit and little spoiler on the boot...why was it special other then being my 1st car and I paid for it was because it was last of the rear wheel drives before they went to front wheel and 1st that had the 5 speed manual after the 4 speeds...I absolutely loved it only having a job packing shelves in 1996 I couldn't be any more proud I managed to put on a set of kidney rims and chubby tyres and that thing would rally dirt like it was ment to be and I even gave NO joke 4ltr falcons a run for there money 😂😂😂 for the 1st 100m then got smashed..but only in a straight line the corners were all mine.😂....I ended up writing it off on the Hume highway near the mccanos set of lights approaching a set of lights and a 5ltr EL Fairline female driver punched it from my right lane to jump in front of me with her ABS to be 1st of the line shortening my stopping distance so I hit her the damage wasn't that bad but it was my fault being on my Ps after cops throwing me the book I continued my trip to my girlfriends house absolutely devastated with the damage and getting fukd by a rich bitch but not long after as I hit 70km/ph my bonnet let go and slung up smashing my windscreen buckling my bonnet so it was a write off 😢....wow the memories of $30 of super i could drive to Katoomba were i grew up from Petersham take my mates for a flog the whole weekend drive back to Sydney and get to work for the week running on fumes and do it all over again the next weekend....the good ol days...

    The VH/VJ Val Hardtop, what's the story on that one?

    • @blownhemi
      @blownhemi  3 дня назад +2

      @bizly05 it's a sad story. A guy that I worked with owned it. The car was a VJ 770 Hardtop and he accidentally ran into a tow truck. I bought it off him and put a CL/CM front on it and used it as a daily. It had a 265 and a 4-speed. It was good fun. Every man and his dog used to knock on my door wanting to buy it. Eventually, I relented and sold it to a guy with a VH hardtop who swore to me he intended to restore it. Fast forward a few years, and I went to check out a hardtop with a mate, who was interested in buying one. Low and behold it was the same guy, but he was selling his VH Hardtop but the VJ wasn't there. Then I started noticing parts laying around, so I asked about it and he said, "Ah that thing was rusty so I stripped it for parts and took the shell to SIMS." The VH he was trying to sell us was a total rust bucket. The VJ I sold him had a 10th of the rust. I was devastated.

    • @bizly05
      @bizly05 2 дня назад

      @@blownhemi That is sad+++ Picked up a VH Hardtop couple years ago, already stripped, media blasted and in epoxy primer, supposedly complete but really its a shell and a jigsaw puzzle. Soon to be off to panel beaters to make it right, going to require more skill than i have, hope to have it done in the next 3-5yrs. I'm finding that parts for the VH Hardtop are hard to come by.

      @@blownhemi lol yep and as expensive as can be. Mate was running one in his 186 HG Monaro, when we were all running small blocks. Back then there was no such thing as going to eBay and ordering a cheap turbo. Anything you got was off some European car that was around the same size. You would then pay through the nose to have Mike Vine recondition it for you. You had to build your own log manifold because there was no such thing as an aftermarket one. Then you made absolutely sure that it wouldn't over boost, or the impeller flew to pieces and your engine would eat metal.
