- Initially thought this welder was the biggest piece of rubbish I've ever used, but after a quick mod it's turned into a solid and reliable tool. Watch the video and see what we did.

Argon isn’t the right gas for mig welding. You need a mix of argon and co2, Argoshield for example

I bought a CIG gasless mig few years ago, not a bad little rig for doing work around our 2.5 acres
I bought an older unimig 190 transformer machine on marketplace for $100. Then dropped another $100 or so converting it to the euro connector, put a new 4m Tweco torch lead on it, a new earth clamp and new regulator. Took covers off and blew the dust out of it. Runs like a champ. I then added some hose hooks (bunnings garden hose aisle) to the side of it and a little tool box to keep everything tidy. I use the bottle swap at Total Tools 5-2 migshield gas in a size E bottle. It's a good size for my occasional use and it's easy to pick up and put in the car. Bigger bottle can be a pain to transport.
I bought this welder a few months ago and haven't used it yet. Sweet that this popped up in my suggestions. Kinda relieved it's not a piece of junk. 😃
these vids are great for novice's like me trying to learn to weld, watching how the settings have an impact on this cheap welder make a reasonable difference on an average piece of equipment.
You can do hobbiest welding courses at a lot of TAFES!
Leading into this maybe scotty can do a video on best bang for buck welders as I am too learning as we go through the series
Everything I’ve bought that is Ozito has been perfectly fine for DIY use.
The other Bunnings brand is AEG that’s a bit more but that is also very good.
AEG is like a German Bosch that has been branded exclusive for Bunnings. It’s better than you think.
Also correct gas will do wonders pure argon on mild steel wont mix too well thats alloy and stainless gas youll want a 90-10 argon/ co2 sheilding gas for mild steel, and between 12 and 20 litres per minute out the reg depending on work thickness wind and many other variables just dont waste gas
Hey Scotty, Wire feed speed (WFS), controls amperage and the amount of weld penetration. WFS and current are directly related: as one increases, so does the other and vice versa. It's just how they work mate you can't adjust one without the other. Look it up, Just my 2c
With you on not selling people crap. I would rather give people something for nothing if there's any question.
Ain't nothing wrong with helping others out either, alot of people these days think their sht is worth gold.
I still use the iron core, coil wound transformer from the old days. 15 amps of single phase current draw that flickers all lights in the street.
These older welders are so much better I have a sca mini mig 180 and iv had it for 10 years and it works great. I don't trust those modern mig are getting too computerized.

Always handy to have a cheap backup welder, to lend to those ‘mates’ that never return your gear lol. Just never lend your gas, as it always comes back empty or not at all
I bought one of these over 10 years ago, needed a small welder to weld a floor into a hilux and every welder i had was a stick. I ran it in gasless mode, needless to say it dkne the job but wasnt great. Ended up under the bench in the shed, gave it to a fella when i moved from the house.
I found out that you can use those little bottles with success. The downside is that you need the gas cranked up enough to empty the bottle within 5 minutes. Was OK when those bottles were less than $10 each.
My welder looks a lot like that but it’s a Repco brand one and it has different controls. It’s not bad but then again it was a $700-$800 welder in 2012
I haven't welded for 7ish years, and I can still tell between a good sounding weld and a bad sounding weld. At 1st, I was like, That's some bad welding, and then you swapped the bottle over and I was like oh that's good now
You could tell something was off on those first welds. It's not supposed to sound like your popping popcorn, lol.
Good work Scotty.... Generally, most welders only have Volts and wire speed. There are industrial welders that only have Amp and Volt knobs. It was explained to me by an old Boily that wire speed basically determines the Amps. With that Id Have the Volts at 13 - 16 for 2mm and play with the wire speed..
First welds - cold steel , Last welds - Hot steel.... Pre- heat your steel to avoid cold starts too......
And if your buying a welder , the higher the duty cycle the better..........Cheers mate..

Trial & error Scotty. My welding isn't the best but hey it does the job.
I'd call that Ozito Welder "Rice Bubbles" cos it snaps, crackles & pops!
Know the process look in wire feed box for parameters.Gas MIG weld right to left flux cored weld left to right wear gloves long sleeves.Learn to nod the helmet while tacking welding use support if you can.Next step when you can weld pipe in position your there.Also get Lincoln book metals and how to weld them.Maybe on line now.

I bought myself ozito arc welder so I can teach myself how to weld I have been doing some repairs on my slasher mower deck that's on the back of my tractor the steel is very thick I have been running the welder at maximum 140 amp it hasn't missed a beat clean tidy welds the fan doesn't even come on even though it's got a 10 amp plug on the welder I run it through a 15 amp power wall socket I'm only guessing but I think the lid on the welder is rated probably 15 amp even though it runs a 10 amp socket
I have been learning to tig weld and i can say with tig welding i notice a huge difference between cheap and expensive tig's. For a cheap mig its not too bad it will stick some metal together
For some reason even some modern decent brand welders have the amps and wire "tied" like this. I was a bit puzzled to begin with when first seeing it. Then i did the math and noticed those welders were inverter type not 3 phase. Its just wirespeed and volts. Where older 3 phase welders you control the amps and wirespeed separately. 3 phase is always the way to go in a factory but these inverter type are getting better
I got the same welder but i use gasless wire. I only use it for small jobs instead of my normal tig or gas mig. Even lend it to mates and not have to worry about it. Its a bit better than a basic stick welder.

I have old used mig's like that one I use for aluminium I get welds looking just like the last weld you did on this episode the other welder I pulled out from the dump weld good , with these kind of welder's there never the same ones you set them up to your happiness they will do the job ,.

I don't think you adjust amperage and speed together on that knob, just speed. It just indicates speeds for between 40 and 120 A .

Scotty, Its a re-branded Cigweld Weldskill 150 Mig
Only issue is getting the feed vs. the amperage to match the wire gauge you are using.
Can be a bit finicky but a great welder for the $'s when used on light gauge stuff.
Just remember the polarity setting on the unit when using flux cored vs. argon supported wire.

I had a cigweld when i was starting out, looked exactly the same unit as that but it was blue, i ran it on a proper bottle of gas and it was mint, didnt have much adjustment seemed to be one setting welded everything at home, only let down was the duty cycle couldnt seem to do alot of welding before it needed a cool down
Yeah, I thought we might have run into that problem as well but not this time.
I melted the plastic in the handpeice of mine but that was after about 4 spools of wire over a few years of home projects so i couldnt complain

On another note, thinnest wire you can get for it will help as much as the gas bottle change did. A flux core roll will help cut down your grinding volume too. I swear the gasless mig and solid core wire manufacturers also own the grinding disc market

Most of that wire speed adjustment is for flux cored wire. Some types you can use gas free or on cheap gas like CO2. Max volts or one below with the big/fat wire you are using. If you use the really thin wire .6mm from memory that welder will do a great job. Just make sure you get the proper contact tip for it and use the correct groove on the drive rollers. Long runs on sheet metal are a breeze with the thin wire. I used one very similar for 30 years untill I bought a big one. I would suggest you fit a valve to it if it doesnt have one as they will use gas all the time.

Lucky for me, scotty, it has actually gotten me out of the shit a few times when a car needs bits welded to get to work. But it was not pretty!
Now I have finished the video, I guess I need to get rid of the shielded wire and get a decent gas setup. Thanks scotty!
these type of migs you set the voltage and then adjust the wire speed usually while you are welding. they can be very finicky but to guess the wire speed will never achieve good results. almost all early migs where like that. check the wire size 0.6 for panel work 0.8 or 0.9 can work but you are behind the 8 ball from the start.

I dont think you mentioned what gas is in the little white bottle. Using the correct gas for the type of welding you're doing helps greatly.

Since you have other welders, that Ozito would be a good candidate for a gasless set up, be interested to see how that goes. You could also make a better welding table...

Straight Argon is for Tig welding, those small bottles would be fine if it was the correct gas to start with.

To be fair Scotty, even at the end there you still weren't giving it a fair crack. You had a bit of cleaned off steel where you clamped the earth but the workpiece was just skating around scrabbling to get a decent connection on the rusty old surface. These things do matter if you are trying to get a decent weld (but you were trying to shit can it and in spite of that it surprised you).
If you're more of a grinder than a welder Scotty there's an app for that! 😉

I have seen professional welders struggle to make pure argon work with mig, while you technically can do it, it's not worth the hassle. A 90/10 mix is worlds better
I run a equivalent welder as a gasless no issue at all

It's about whatever is happening in Scotty's Garage. Some days it's going to be car building stuff, some times it's going car building related stuff like welders and tools and stuff and sometimes it's going to be story time. with a couple different cars I'll try and keep it interesting, but remember I don't have the Carnage budget to play with.

With your welding helmet did you take both protective covers of front and back I was new to welding didn’t know about it then wow see so much better

Check your polarity. I think it's been set to gasless and your + / - needs to be swapped.

Wow, i wonder how my cheap gasless mig (has a gas option) would go with proper gas, I probably should have done that. A mate of mine uses like a swap n go on his Mig gas bottles at Bunnings due to they are open on Sunday when you inevitably run out(D size and possibly bigger and other types). might be something to consider and share on a future episode of the pros and cons.(initial outlay to buy the bottle outright i think is one factor, but no rental there after for light use)
@@deankdx Bunnings and Total Tools are both good options for swapping gas bottles
You'll get a few small jobs done with these things. The problem is they wear out the liners and there's no easy way to replace it. Put your fiddy bucks toward a good unit.
I bought a euro connector on ebay for about $20. Just have to pick one that is the right length to fit between the wire feed roller and the casing. Dead easy to wire up. Then you can get a torch lead of your choosing and you are in business. Adding gas to a gasless mig is easy too. It's all out there on forums and RUclips.
@aaronhogan2371 I've got an old mig similar to Scotty's rubbish picked variant. I have a need for a portable mig that can be poorly treated as the other one I have is three phase and $27 grand new. I was going to get a unimig, might give your suggestion a go. Cheers
@@dinosshed go for it. It's dead easy. Just get a generic binzel/Tweco copy lead. A 3 meter lead would be under $100 and grab some matching consumables (tips/shields etc). Since it's going to be a portable unit grab some of the earth lead connectors that twist lock together. Will just make it easier if you can remove the leads from the welder when carrying it to a job.
Well that's what happens with too much heat Scotty. Extra penetration, need to turn the Amps down😁
Ozito tool dont get the credit they deserve ! I wouldn't rush out and stock my whole shed with the stuff but what i have got ive abused and its held up better than some well known tool brands ,as for welding its usually 50%skill 50%having machine tuned right brand wont matter

Was the small bottle 100% Argon? For Tig, Mig gas is 75% Argon 25% Carbon Dioxide.
It'd the bottle that came with the welder, I didn't choose it.
This could be a monthly or bi-monthly segment, Scotty test crappy tools
For someone who might take a year to use that little bottle just doing little things here and there could you put a reg on the little bottle to get the same results?
As some people have mentioned in the comments. Argon is wrong for straight MIG welding as well, so there could be too things at play here. Best to best get a regulator and exchange bottle or pay someone to do your welding
Buy the way the gas can go bad even freshly purchased
Were you using pure Argon?
For MIG you need 25% carbon dioxide 75% argon mix, or 5/2 mix etc.
And you sounded a bit hard on the guy who sold you the welder? That was a perfectly reasonable price for a sturdy trolley and working MIG unit. 👍
@wizrom3046 remember how it started, that's how it was when I first used it - whichis how it was delivered. It got better when I changed the gas over. I've also talked to him about before and after the video, and he's fine

That's not right for MIG, the 25% carbon dioxide is needed for MIG because it increases heat and penetration.
My supplier provides 5/2 mix for MIG, which is about 28.6% carbon dioxide.

Still sounds and looks fractionally cold. Would I use it on the car? No, would I weld a light frame like a work trolley with it? yes, I think I would. Perfect welder if you were into metal art, where results aren't absolutely critical. Lack of separate wire feed and amps is going to be the biggest limiting factor on it's usability.
WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT WATCH A PANEL BEATER WELD.You will laugh they show you what not to do.But ships submarines and pressure vessels are not as critical as the Falcon or Commodore

Oils aint Oils and welding Gas aint Welding Gas Scotty ! Pure Argon is very cold and usually only for Aluminium or Stainless steel , Mild steel argon contains other gases and can also have Helium to help get a hot weld on Thick steel . That's why there was such a difference with the Gas change . A solid Tiel green bottle is Pure Argon , when it has a Grey or other colour at the top of your bottle then its a Argon Mix ! DO NOT pay good money for a Unimig , In 2 years I blew 2K worth of cuircut boards in mine and now you can have it for Free If ya want it it's in the corner covered in dust covered in dents from me kicking the shit outa it ! Talk to a reputable Gas supplier or welding shop before buying ya next bottle of Gas it makes a world of difference mate . Type and thickness of material changes Gas requirement almost every time .
Yeah, the bottles came with the MIG, I didn't choose them, but it's interesting that gas has such a massive effect.
@@blownhemi Yeh I know they did , But thought you might need some advice on which Gas to use mate . We use Helium Argon mix on anything thicker than 16mm . It has a Nice POP when you strike an arc ! and makes a Huge difference with penetration on 20mm plate . Talk to CIG Gas they will advize the best gas for you .
Pure Argon is very expensive compared to a Mix also .
the voltage is wrong your getting no penetration into the steel, problem with those ozito welder is its only 130amps flat out and its duty cycle is rubbish, you'll spend more time waiting for the coil to cool down, the little bossweld 100 gasless migs are a Good little unit, I've just sold my 300amp mig as I to put my money into a good pulse Tig as I'm doing a lot of aluminium, the 300amp migs on ebay are pretty Good I've had a couple not once did it either hit the overload even doing a 12" run at 24volts, duty cycle, max amps, and buy an inverter you electric bill will thank you that is what you need to look at if buying any welder

I don’t think that’s right about Ozito. Ozito has a commercial range which apparently is stupidly good, a few tradies have mentions it!
I have some Ozito items and they function but I don't thing I'd be using them for trade work. This welder has a tag on the power cord that says, "Not for Trade Use"

Love the vids. The small bottle looks to be straight Argon(for tig welding) and your large bottle will be Argonshield which is for mig.
Yeah, I imagine that will have an effect but would it be that much of an effect?
I was thinking the same thing it’s almost as if the voltage is reduced running straight argon. I connected my argon for my Tig to my Mig one day to see what it was like in a pinch. Definitely wouldn’t ever use it in that way you’d be better running gasless.

I brought a brand new BOC inverter mig, it has only 1 control to adjust the wire speed and power. It is in my opinion the worst piece of over priced underperforming POS welder money can be wasted on. That bloody Ozito does a better job and it was considerably cheaper.
