See your problem was you weren't a campy 1990s fantasy character who can chuck that thing and have it cut through anything the plot demanded as it bounced around like Captain America's shield.
I remember a 90s sci-fi movie with the Dolph called "I Come in Peace" (actually a pretty good B-flick, recommended) and ine of the alien's weapons was what looked like a wrist mounted CD launcher, and the razor-sharp discs would ricochet around until homing in on someone's magnetic field.
And he doesnt have many skills.
One of those skills being chakram enchantment
He just needed to screech, Ahhh! Yayayayyayaaa!
Well to be fair, Xena was 'her' before we started calling those out. XD
It's all in the reflexes
The most important thing we've learned from this video is to paint your practice knives with day-glow orange.
That or some colorful ribbon in the lanyard loop.
I play paintball in the woods, and legit have reflective tape on all of my paintball magazines where they won't be seen in use but I can still find them if I drop one on the ground... took a lot of trial and error. Would recommend. Probably could have just painted the top half of them dayglow orange...
Believe it or not, but this is exactly what I do with my no spin throwing knives :) (actually the Top Dog Skal uses in the vid happens to be my favorite thrower together with the Vengeance (both by Wulflund/Sharp Blades)
Honestly the best bet is to paint em multiple contrasting colors so if it falls in a place with one color, the other colors stand out... Basically paint your knives pride flag style.

Yes I remember the great Canadian ninja wars. Such a dark yet epic time in Canadian history.
There's even a movie about it. It's called Final Sacrifice.
I have seen a whole generation of edgelords lost to senseless war.
That would make an awesome '80s ninja movie!
Before the Great Ninja Wars Canada had twice the population of China. The government stopped complete annihilation of the Canadian population by nunchucks and ninja stars in the last moment.

There's a trick in firearm filming that's placing a mirror at a 45 degree angle infront of the flamy end and shooting the projectile straight on without damaging the camera, while providing a direct view, I wonder if it could be used on throwing weapons to make filming them safer (for the camera)
Smarter Every Day shoots his slow-mo footage quite frequently using that strategy
Keep the flamy end pointed in a safe direction and your booger hook off the bang switch until boom time
Don't you still need to protect the camera in case the projectile "miss"? Plus you have to protect the mirror or its gonna get expensive. IMO, the "cheapest" solution for this situation would still be a clear acrylic sheet between you and the camera.
@@jenjenhocho3188 cameras, esp. slow-mo ones, are definitely more expensive than mirrors.
Myrhbusters made that mistake or a full season before realizing the plastic they were using was not thick enough. Luckily no one got hurt.
My thoughts on small throwing weapons are drawn to the roman tactic (and as darkironraven commented, the ninja's tactic) of "throw something at the enemy to be a nuisance more than anything, and then as they're dealing with that go in for the attack with a melee weapon", just on a smaller scale. Think in the form of a 1v1 where you throw something at their face and they instinctively duck or block, either putting them off balance or taking a hit to their hands, and then you rush in with a melee weapon. In this sense, I feel that chakram have the potential to deal more damage, but shuriken have more potential to get properly stuck (notably, not more likely to stick, but more likely to get stuck afterwards), making them more of an annoyance. So its a matter of do you want A or B. But either way, they're not intended to kill, just to be another tool you can use to make sure another tool gets the job done.
That was the whole point with the shuriken (a.k.a. ninja star). It wasn't meant to be a lethal weapon, it was just for distracting the enemy while you 1) charged with a melee weapon or 2) escaped.
The legend goes that the original ninja soaked the shuriken on poison making even the slightest scartch lethal.
@@darkironraven Exactly :D
@@darkironravenI've heard it somewhat was. Shuriken was, like many ninja weapons, pretty versitale. It could be thrown and used melee. Apparently, they trained throwing at the neck, it was the most deadly in there. Ninjas rarely actually fought, since targets they took had bodyguards, so their tools were intended to quickly get the job done, or help doing so. Of course, they had a bunch of self-defence weapons, but to my knowedge, shuriken was very versitale and could be used like you said, as a distraction, distance kill or also as knuckles or a knife to murder
That definitely makes sense. It would likely have been used either when rushing into melee, or defending against a charge; and would serve the same purpose as the _plumbata_ throwing dart did for Roman soldiers and cavalry. It would also be a very effective weapon against unarmoured targets like cavalry horses or war elephants.
@@darkironraven Of course, then you have to remember to not lick the darn thing.
Rajput warriors that used chakrams sometimes wore them on special turbans to carry multiple at once and not have to wear them on their hips or backs.
Edit: I was halfway through the video before seeing that Skall made that note.

@@vannederynen1 I do this because i'm afraid at the end of video i will forget what i wanted to say xD But i edit my comment instead of producing more of them.
Skall has a superpower that makes the chakram always hit on the blunt side
I do a decent amount of slinging and I'm not as skeptical as Skall about the fingerspin throw - slinging uses a lot of the same movements and also has a projectile attached to a finger and you can generate a decent amount of power that way, plus you have more time to get the chakram up to speed than when throwing it normally.
The issue is that you get all the awful, awful drawbacks of slinging (hideously hard to aim, needs an incredible amount of fine motor skills when compared to... any other way of fighting, glacially slow training time) with none of the advantages (lots of ammo per cubic meter of storage, massive range/cheap ammo).
That makes sense. Aiming is really weird with that release method.
@@Skallagrim practice a few hours aday for 20y and then make a new video
@@Skallagrim But it does make sense if you consider it in the context of an infantry or cavalry charge, where you can throw multiple weapons in quick succession, much faster than a sling (and from the back of a horse you have that added momentum). In that context, precise aim isn't as important as sheer volume, especially since the massed soldiers you're going to be going up against are primarily unarmoured or lightly armoured troops and their mounts -- horses or elephants. It's much the same tactic used by Roman troops with the _plumbata_ war darts and light javelins. Unlike a bow, you still have a hand free for a shield, spear, or sword; and unlike an arrow or javelin/dart, it can still be quite effective if deflected by armour (the round shape making it far more likely to ping off the armour and hit someone else, losing little momentum in the process). The main downsides being that it takes considerably more skill to use without injuring yourself than darts or javelins, and has a less range and power than a short-bow.
Wouldn't it also make sense to use a stick instead of your finger generate more leverage when spinning?
@@EphemeralTao As you say, aim was less a concern. Weight of fire was a real game changer for these.
How dare you mention the ninja epidemic of 85!! Millions of people lost their entire families and all their house pets as well to ninja assassinations!
Edgelords! Edgelords everywhere! Just when I thought the flashbacks had ended.
Did surprisingly well against the thin cloth. I wasn't expecting it to go through even that much.
If you think about it not a lot of people probably wore heavy padding or armor during an Indian summer.
Like everything, weapons are products of their environment.
Seemed to be fairly taught and well supported by the flatter bottle behind (that if its anything like the last bottle like that I had in hand is quite stiff), so not that shocking to me. If it sailed through that easily with a looser more billowing wrap and a squashier rounder bottle I'd be a bit surprised, but almost everything was set up to make it going through the fabric easier. As always with such small sample sizes can't really say much beyond, its a scary enough 'weapon' that like anything slightly dangerous you'd rather not be on the wrong end of it.
@@zeframmann1641actually, you are absolutely right! I didn't think about it actually. I was legit thinking about like, chainmail atleast, it was a lot popular in european infantry, but yeah that weapon is asian after all. Ngl lie tho, I assiociated it with China for some reason lol. I was thinking of this weapon rather as a situational tool, maybe for distraction, samurais did it for example. They had like bulky o-yoroi armor and they threw throwing stars from their sleeve from some natural position to hide real movement, so yeah I was thinking rather in this category. But true, charkams work very well in India-like enviroment. From what I know they also used bows but.. to me it's like taking up a chey-tac on a guy with a glock, a pistol is weaker overall, but a sniper rifle is less situational
One must consider that low caste indians are usually naked and skinnyfat
This is where spin comes in. Rather than depending on impact velocity and trying to chop into a target, the edge slices its way in.
I wasn't sold until you pointed out the easier finding in the forest. Iv lost plenty of knives that way
Yep, it's all too easy to lose them. A metal ring stands out a lot more.
One might almost consider carrying a backup metal detector for such cases
@@P3x310 that's a pretty good idea

I've never tried the finger twirl throw with an actual chakram, but I have done it with an Aerobie. Once I figured out how to do it, I could throw an Aerobie with a lot of force using that technique. The real trick was getting the release timing down to actually hit what I was throwing at. I'm also certain it would take a lot longer time to get comfortable with using the finger twirl throw and not worry about accidentally hitting yourself with an actual sharp chakram than it did with an Aerobie.
I mean people in older times didn't have as many various activities to flood their time really. I could imagine someone being able to practice that for quite some time on a daily basis.

best throwing weapons - is a grenade
Naw It's a rock
Nope. Ball bearings.
Now we need a video about African throwing weapons like the Kpinga or Mambele.
Gotta include a Buffy clip with the mambele (S3E1).
I think there is some interesting intersection between show-off/gymnastics/circus-y abilities and the military back then, showing off impressive abilities like throwing chakrams, climbing really fast a tall building, balancing on a ladder or a pole, etc, could be used to coerce small populations without actual violence happening or even just impress different countries like "look what our man are capable of, we are incredible, are you sure you want to pick up a fight with us? This chakram can take a head off!". And now we see this things and try to visualize it being used in a combat scenario that may never really existed.
That's just a speculation btw
A lot of martial arts weapons were never meant for actual combat, and more so meant to just show off and to "play with".
Ever seen that photo of a Spetsnaz soldier throwing a hatchet while doing a flip? I've always thought that was a hilarious example of propaganda. I mean, he's still not immune to bullets.😂
The problem with this theory is the numerous European accounts that mention that the chakram was used in battle alongside the countless Indian accounts. You would have to assume that all these sources were lying, all the accounts from the British-Sikh wars are mistaken. It's all a big sham. A historical conspiracy played out by numerous actors throughout time to prop up the chakram.
Now I'm not saying that the chakram is a super weapon, its not. Its just meant to wound and harrass unless you land a lucky hit. But is it so hard to imagine that during the sikh wars, in a period of muskets and when Indian forces where abandoning armor and European infantry had none, no sikh soldier after firing their muskets and, with the enemy closing in and no time to reload, never decided to toss a few chakrams at them before they got into bayonet/sword range? Especially against soldiers who had no shields like the British?
@@planescaped you're most likely talking about exhibition weapons. More of a Dance then a martial art though you could argue they're the same. Actual Martial Art weapons work. Farm tools work.
Some say if you walk the woods of deepest darkest Canadia at night, you can still hear the faint echo of Skall, eternally searching for his lost thrower.
To do the no-spin throw you have to use the index and middle fingers to create a channel for the dart to rest in and slide out of (secured with the thumb), kinda like a half pipe barrel. Then you also have to release when your "barrel" is pointing at the target, not before or you will get spin.
You don't have to do that. It helps but you can also just hold it like you would a bat,but with a loose grip, then just swing down and let go
@@juggalosteef1 Interesting, I can see the similarity, I'll have to try that.
Im by no means accomplished at throwing things, but I always found an under arm flick to be by far the easiest way 🤷🏻
I recommend more frisbee practice. I’m quite serious about this. Even if your chakrams don’t have aerofoil cross section, spinning helps stabilize them during flight. Also, as you observed a non spinning one tries to chop its way into a target and usually fails. With spin, it will more slice its way in.
Weirdly enough it actually doesn't slice it's way in, in slow mo what's happening is as the spinning occurs it hits the target, and slightly rides along the edge until the pressure punctures and it digs in. By spinning imagine that instead of "slicing," it is instead constantly doing a new press cut in the same spot. It's because it does this, by this I mean bounce off the target and then spin back into the target within millimeters of the surface so long as the object maintains spinning, that this happens. Knives are actually rather inefficient at cutting something by being rubbed along the surface, the energy required is way too high. The chakram while spinning conducts multiple press cuts in rapid succession but it's only capable of doing this because of the spin imparted into it by the thrower.
I can definitely see chakrams being useful as just daily carry self defense weapons in medieval times, especially in hotter climates where people are lightly clothed.
I see your camera was helpfully keeping the trees in the background in focus.

The chakram hat is one of the coolest things I’ve seen in a while!
Regarding throwing sickle size objects, some throwing knives in Chad and Cameroon were carried in a quiver on the left shoulder and since they are flat pieces or still can be easily stored together. They could be used on horseback.

I really like when you were talking about twirling the chakram around your finger and couldn't get it to work. Instead of dismissing it outright, you left the possibility open that it could be an advanced expert technique. That kind of self-skepticism showcases a high degree of intellectual integrity, and demonstrates how the skeptic principle of testing things and finding out for yourself has become a lifestyle and a part of your identity. That kind of approach is what keeps me coming back to your channel. Thanks for exploring these ideas!
A trait absent with so many who claim higher intellectualism. They think that knowing a lot of stuff means they are intellectual, when it does not. Intellect is the ability to learn.
The chakrum was used with the finger spinning technique by Bugnug, and African assassin, in the rather obscure and way over the top anime Crying Freeman.

I have the SOG axe and the throwing version (3 lighter ones in a hip case).
My SOG throwing axe is good for both targets/cutting wood and the odd cobra chicken that I need to wrestle in hand to hand (JK!) when chasing me camping.
As a kid I've cut myself a disk out of thick cardboard. It's size was similar to larger of your chakrams, it had only 5 small holes for fingers to increase its mass, and despite it being dull, it stil hurt like crazy. Accuracy was good too, thrown horizontally, with pointing finger giving it spin quite naturally.
Excellent breakdown Skal
I was just watching Xina Warrior Princess yesterday, lol
Im a fan of the double ended rotating throwing weapons. Like the throwing glaive from Blade.
I love axes. Throwing axe from reverse or lower or lower revers position gives you distance flexibility and lower position could give you surprise attack - you just handle axe in lowered hand near your leg and in the next moment it flies in your target.
Like the bloopers at the end of the video. Those were a fun addition.

Always interesting Skallagrim, thanks.
Enjoyed the video as always, Skal.
You did ask about our favorite throwing weapons. Mine is a four pound sledgehammer. Two special features make it, IMO, a far better throwing weapon than the ones you talked about in this video. First, its haft allows it to be thrown faster than a knife or the Chakram (although its mass does leave it slower than the axes) and the fact that it's a *tool* means it gets overlooked by most people.
It looks like your "throwing spike" has a little hole in the base? If so, and you throw without spin, hanging a streamer or otherwise fluffy bit in there will make your throws more stable, same as a fletching an arrow.
It's not the point of the video and you might just not have bothered this time, but it's worth mentioning
That's an interesting idea!
There are some chakrams that will have a handle built right in the center of the ring so you have a full 360 edge whilst also still having some way to safely grab onto the thing
But there are some chakrams with no blunt end or handle at all just pure edge.
Fun fun fun😂
The throwing axe, is my favorite 🤘
"If it sinks into the swamp ..." I got that reference. And it made me chuckle. I've never been able to throw knives without the spin and make them do what I want. Since I only throw them at Rendezvous, I usually have to practice a few times to remember how to throw, then I only suck a little bit. LOL It's still fun, though. Good to know I'm not missing anything with the chakram.
I wonder, if you would weld 4 chakrams together, would it count as a ninja star?
Realistically throwing knives/stars are best used for causing distractions. Whether by making noise breaking nearby objects. Or startling your opponent by throwing stuff at them and rushing in.
Nice spot, fun testing. Good stuff.
Shoutout the Monty Python reference at the end! 😆
That was pretty sikh (I had to...)

Fantastic video. I'm in a good mood now.
Imagine, throwing cards made of metal with sharped edges, would it work?
Technically yes, I’ve heard of some throwing ranges that have them. Practically I don’t know what advantage that would have compared to knives or axes.

He does, although for different reasons. AFAIK that ban was enacted by conservatives by the way. So far I haven't found a government that doesn't suck in some way... most politicians aren't exactly honest, relatable folk with your best interests in mind.
@@Skallagrim yea man my buddys dad tried telling me dungeons and dragons was satanic and im a christian haha but im in america, the last bastion of freedom and all us normal guys who want a normal life r fighting the degeneracy best we can
@@user-wx3wx5vy3q Sorry, but I find it hard to call a country a "bastion of freedom" that has the world's highest prison population and for-profit prisons.
@@Skallagrim ive been to prison, because i deserved to go. I broke the laws. People in prison break the laws. Most people in prison needa be in prison.
@@user-wx3wx5vy3q Innocent people are wrongfully convicted, or convicted for petty, victimless crime (like possessing small amounts of weed). The profit incentive is a dangerous bias that makes it worse.
There are plenty of countries that have a much smaller prison population AND lower crime rates.
Shar the goddess of night and loss appreciates you mortal reviewing here favoured weapon and holy symbol.
For a no spin throw there are three ways that you can add power to it and it all comes from your core.
1st is to take a small step.
2nd is to drop your center of gravity during the throw. This should feel like you are sitting down and an inch of drop is plenty.
3rd is to bow. This one can be tricky because it may make you take your eyes off of the target but you should feel force rising from the crown of your head during a bow and the kine can get thrown with that force.
You can use any one of these methods or a combination of any number of them.
All of these techniques are whip-like motions and the aim is to effectively lengthen the whip that you make out of your body mechanics. If it helps, your legs should feel like a hand gripping the handle of a whip and your upper body and arm are the length of the whip. Done correctly the knife should almost fall out of your hand at the apex of the arc of your whip-like throw.
For me its the throwing spike. They usually hit at an angle that theyll pierce an unarmored target just dur to heft, and can still go through armor with a good throw and theyre the easiest to carrt
Thanks for the content! 😄
My favorite throwing weapon so far is axe. I found it way easier to use and quicker to learn than knives or javelin.
Skal, maybe you want to make a video on how many throwing weapons could you reasonably wear on your body/armor?
Greetings from Austria
My favorite throwing weapon is a fragmentation grenade. Only threw one in the army but it was quite a lot easier than getting throwing knives to stick 😅
Great informative video as always, keep up the good work!
For the algorithm. Been a while since I’ve seen your vids on the feed!
I'm a sucker for a "that's what she said" joke. Well done
Throwable black color is a great find for stores that sell this, sales will only grow. :)
when it comes to throwing weapons everybody seems to forget the "good ol' rock"
