The album version was played on the bridge pickup but he's mostly known for playing the neck pickup live seeing as that's how the solos were played. Nice video! Had the honor of seeing Gilmour play at Pompeii back in 2016. Went with my dad for my 19th birthday!!!
Absolutely true Marcus! It's crazy I share the same story with my dad when we went to see him on that same tour in roman ruins in France. I know how special of a moment that should have been for you :) // Guillaume
The sound is very much there. Hard to recreate the sound of gunned high wattage HiWatt without deafening yourself, but the clean boost trick is working here perfectly. Great work Gill.
“Shine On…” has such an elusive tone. I got close, but never close enough… something’s always just slightly off. Compression helps, big time, but what really got me as close to nailing that tone was a ColorSound PowerBoost clone (the boost/overdrive pedal that’s all over that album).
I have a Boss DD-7 delay and a MXR Phase 90 (Block) on my board. Going to try getting close as I can with that and my PRS CE24. I was able to get pretty close on Breathe. Atleast to my ear.
Man PF is and will always be TIMELESS. You're 10 years older than my father, but we're still loving it. I got to see Roger Waters with PF (without David Gilmour I think) in my senior year of high school which was only 2016-2017. I mean yea he's old and his voice ain't like it used to be, but there is NO COMPARISON to seeing it live. It was like a dream come true. I wish I could remember more of it but I was completely faded, me and my buddy snuck in like 6 big joints. People don't change only times do :D cheers from a young ass american! I bet we got more in common than you think :)
I am glad you used the Keeley caverns as I was thinking of going Keeley DDR with the phase 90 in the loop of the pedal with the delay of the pedal and using my amps spring reverb. If you had the choice which way would you go?
That´s a great question! To be honest I think both pedals (caverns + phase) in front of a clean amp tend to drive it slightly differently than a pedal in a loop and using an amp reverb. I couldn't possibly say however, if this wouldn't be closer to David Gilmour's actual sound. They are both totally valid options but if I had to choose, It would be caverns and phase to have more control over the independant effects. Thank you for your comments :)! // Guillaume
Thomann's Guitars & Basses Thanks for the reply, I know it’s a hard choice. I will probably go for a compressor, drive pedal, phase 90, Keeley caverns straight into the amps clean channel. I will have to work out where the fuzz pedal will go if I need it.
I really liked this video because it's clear to see that you absolutely love the song and whenever you hear those notes you become so happy. SOYCD was the first Pink Floyd song I ever heard and it was mesmerizing. Thank you for the content!
If you want to hit the sound right, you will also need a Binson Echorec, if you want to come very close use a Dawner Prince Boonar pedal or a catalinbread echorec pedal.
As for delay, Gilmour has used Echorec (Drum), Tel Ray (Oilcan) and 2290 (80's digital) delay. But not the 2290 on this song on the record. Could well be the Tel Ray on the record though.
Hi Guillaume! I'm thinking of wiring my HSS Strat with the blender mod, I've tried a switch to turn my neck pickup on and really liked the neck and bridge and I'm wondering if it would be worth to wire the second tone pot to the neck pickup as a blender. What do you think? Do you use the blender on your Strat or do you just use it on 10 or all the way off, like a switch essentially? Another question, are you using the stock tone pot or do you have a no load pot for the blender? Thank you!
The tone for the intro guitar solo before the four notes is the one to aim for. I have never got close to it. DI into a mixing desk is a bit beyond my budget.
@@oliverboisen7475 it does but there’s something else about the guitar tone in that album intro that I have never nailed and it still eludes me. I can play it almost exactly (a gift of accuracy caused by Asperger’s) note for note and with most of the nuances but to get that sound…. I have suspicions it was a P90 and when I tried to ask Mr Gilmour (we used to be neighbours when I lived in Hove, UK and visited the same bakery. Obscure or what?!) about it, he just walked away. I was extremely polite and he knew we were neighbours because I had helped him with something before. So unless someone actually replicates it exactly, maybe being near enough is what i’ll need to accept.
@@LysanderLH I see your point. Remember it could also be the tape from the recording or the mixing. Those miniscule aspects makes replecating exact tone from a record almost impossible

Check the audio with headphones on the RX unit, the transmitter and reciever is paired very close to another set that's active causing some RF Phasing to be heard in the signal. That being said though. The tone is pretty much spot on. Also I love the color on that strat.
Hey Dennis, thanks for the tip! It's actually the first time we had interferences with the lav mic, but it was due to the house that this studio is in and it's very "vintage" electrical installation ^^ Will make sure it won't happen again ! // Guillaume
Try a small amount of Flange and a bit of Chorus which make the sound bigger, and possibly some Stereo Reverb? Add some Compression too which cleans up any scratcyness and Noise Suppressor will just everything out to the amp nicely.

There's a competition for the best 4 notes !!!! well clearly you havent listened to HOLST - Uranus from "The Planets Suite" them dramatic 4 notes weave their way right the way through the orchestra they are the magician !!
I just listened to it...that's pretty sweet. Are you referring to the 4 notes at the beginning? If so it's definitely a contender but I think Shine On still takes the cake. It's not just the notes it's something about certain emotions behind that melody that you don't get in this suite. Though I did really enjoy listening to that it was wild but beautiful (much like our solar system)....cheers!
