    🎸 About This Lesson:
    With all of our player studies, we spend a lot of time working out how to recreate the tone of the artist. With David Gilmour, we needed to match the right guitar with the right amp, and then add a few choice pedals to really bring the sound together. In the videos below, our gear specialist Chris will take you through how we created the tone for each solo we studied.

    I think the only way to truly achieve Gilmour's tone is to wear a somewhat baggy black T-shirt at all times. You were almost there with the polo shirt.

    Years ago I would gaze a the"david Gilmore signature pickups" at the guitar center. Dreaming like the kid on Christmas story looking at the red rider bb gun. Dreaming of installing them in my Peavy strat copy.what was I thinking? I don't know? I bought an ibanez instead and a digital effects board. The secret I've found is in the delay indeed! You want enough delay.. With just a tad of decay... So that the notes don't "die"!..keeping the notes alive until the next strategically placed one allows you to "stitch together" the peice quite nicely. The delay does this.. And the distortion.. Big muff, digital, or heavy crunch pedal should not be too much over 50%.! Most players use too much distortion which live comes thru more then you think. With distortion less is more I've discovered... And I've done comfortably numb just like he's doing over the music live 6 different times and amazed the crowd each time. So I know!...of course it was "open mic night"..
    But hey?

    Nice tutorial! Throw in a second compressor in series and use any other amp than a Plexi (Fender Bassman, Messa, Dumble). Push the preamp to just about breakup then roll it back. The guitar should sustain into feedback as long as you're fretting with the pedals on. Then play those tasty Gilmour licks you've got and wait for the phone call! Excellent job!

    • @michaelwoods9005
      @michaelwoods9005 6 лет назад +1

      prozaccowboy David's base tone is very clean and pure, you need something like a Fender or Hiwatt for a good clean tone like that.
      The clean tone on most Marshall amps is kind of dull and characterless and most people dont use them for that kind of sound.

  • @dkfatcatguitar5031
    @dkfatcatguitar5031 5 лет назад +1

    You have to have a Yamaha RA 200 rotating speaker to really nail the tone.

  • @josephmarkey9096
    @josephmarkey9096 Год назад

    To get the "Gilmour tone" you need an MXR dynacomp, into a boost pedal, then into a Big Muff then an electric mistress. For "Animals" era tones, place a 4 stage phaser before the mistress. But boosting the muff is a big part of getting his attack right.

      @@ynotds6205 It doesn't change the volume, because of the compression, but it takes away some of the harsh, biting overtones. Remember, this lowers the volume that goes INTO the compressor. So the sound will be cleaner and have more single-coil clarity.

    I like the vid in general, BUT....
    it's kinda a "how to sound like Gilmour on gear worth enough that you could buy all the stuff Gilmour actually uses".
    I expected a video that would allow me to get closer to Gilmour's sound on some mid-range Squier, mid-range amp and 1-2 pedals. For the price of Clapton's strat you can propably buy an American Standard and load it with actual SSL5/CS69/Fat 50's that Gilmour uses (or the EMGs) and for the price of the Plexi you can propably buy a Hiwatt, etc. etc. etc.
    Anyways, I liked the video, so I am upvoting, but I just expected it to be quite different

    The part that I’ve never heard anyone get is Gilmour’s attack. It cuts through, but not harshly. Each note is very well articulated. Lots of definition. This (like everyone else who tries to copy gilmour’s setup) was very muddy sounding.

      @PMiller3425 2 года назад

      @Anne O'Nymous Thank you for your service but pointing out that no one can duplicate something David Gilmour does isn’t a criticism; it’s simply a point of discussion.

    • @PMiller3425
      @PMiller3425 2 года назад

      @Anne O'Nymous What I said was true though. Getting in the ballpark of Gilmour’s lead sound requires extreme volume and moving a lot of air. He didn’t use much distortion. It was slightly overdriven and the cranked amp produced all of the subtleties of the sound. If one is using a lot of distortion, it’s not his sound. It’s not even close.

      No problem at all Sheharyar! Very good question - We did use a bit of reverb (but very little as we had the mic picking up some of the room reverb), but we overlooked phaser. Great suggestion though, I'm sure a touch of phaser would have boosted the sound even more!

      Hi there! Yeah the room sound was epic wasn't it? We don't necessarily have the top of the range recording equipment or knowledge to do it total justice in the recorded version. Any tips for getting a better recording with mic placement/style of mic?

    • @ytscksdabig1
      @ytscksdabig1 6 лет назад +1

      SM57s are pretty standard on cabs, I don't like angled mic placement, I like it straight on and pretty much 1-2" away from the speaker, nothing far off. Add a bit of EQ boost around 5k, if you don't have a Presence control on an amp (so basically any non-Fender xD) you can add a bit of a boost around 1.5k as well, and then cutting around 500 can take out some of the 'boxiness'. Should give the sound a more rounder town, I also mic about 1-1.5" inches from the speaker edge. Closer you get to the center of the speaker the thinner the sound will get, closer to the edge the 'bassier' it will get. Not that you'll really get a bass boost, but the sound will be full.

      chippchipp1 EMG (the company) was founded in 1976 but before that it was called Dirtywork Studios, and their first pickup was the same as their current EMG model of EMG H and EMG HA models. It’s in Dirtywork Studios that Gilmour met with Peter Frampton who let him try his guitar with the active pickups Dirtyworks invented. Gilmour had Dirtyworks install them in his Cherry Red Strat and used it on Wish You Were Here. He still uses that same Strat when he plays WYWH today. He now also endorses those same EMG pickups for EMG.

    The easy thing all videos tell you that gets 10 percent there. Get a Fender blues jr and a stereo jazz chorus 22 for stereo amp set up is you dont have a wad. FIRST A REALLY GOOD COMPRESSION kEELEY OR BOSS Not any muff will do i like the new Green Russian but and OCD. The best Mistress clone, and if you can afford a vinatge CE 1 were talking FAT tone even though he was never known, they work but a CE2 boss digital delay. NOW go to the nearest person in your state that knows any production skills and pay them to tweek. Last youre only as good as your backing track and that can make or break you even if you playing is insane. The KEY is learning what really does sound good before you play to it. Ive heard guys killing it but their backing track is so bad or band has no groove that the listener will not be able to seperate. The gear is a small part of it. compression good muff flange and chorus and dely and a phase for older stuff than say The Wall. Im mostly into Gilmours tone on the Pulse concert,. I wsted my time when i was young not understanding i sounded bunk because i had no production skills. A listener will not know its just poor equipment they just hear the final product. Learn to play a little then go to school for production then go to school top master your instrument. Listen with a critical ear and dont make best friends with a mediocre player in your band cause you will have to sack them later. I listen to great players with bad bands and im saying to myself that my talent can hear that. Shouldve been a producer, thats the part that finally im going to start to learn and i shouldve learned that right after i could play some chords.

    • @mattgilbert7347
      @mattgilbert7347 5 лет назад

      You can turn up the repeats as long as you keep the delay level reasonably low, so that the repeats (usually around 6-7) decay naturally unless it's something like "Time" where there are two very specific delay sounds/settings.

    • @mattgilbert7347
      @mattgilbert7347 5 лет назад

      It helps if you run a wet/dry rig. Then you *can* crank the wet FX, as the dry amp keeps your tone front and center, nicely focused. Better than stereo, especially in a live context. A couple of good 15-20W combos should do the trick. I run a Laney Cub12r with either a Tweed Blues Jnr 3 or a Bassbreaker15 combo. Works like a charm.

    Very good Gilmour attempt, bit just shows how uncopyable he is. Your playing is super clean, nails the notes, the pinches and the width and frequency of the vibrato perfectly. But oddly it is still a world apart from the real thing where those little rough edges and microtonal bends and trems just create the feel of the piece.

    It really takes more years to play like Gilmour. Yes one can play the notes maybe make them sound good but theres not a fluid ownership of even a slower solo until youve mastered your guitar. wHEN I BUSSED TABLES AT A YOUNG AGE I DID IT EVERY NIGHT FOR FOUR YEARS NOT CARING JUST DOING IT BEFORE LONG IT WAS WITHOUT THINKING AND I COULD THROW PLATES FROM 10 FEET AWAY IT WAS REPeTITION !!! Thats the secret and if i hadnt stopped playing cause of my job i wouldve mastered the guitar. With you tube you young kids have no excuses. We played everything wrong and wasted hours trying to figure out little things not knowing we were 100 per right. You young are so good now cause of you tube. Its all here for you but break your ego down over and over and be honest and always be the worst guy in the band
