- The most revered guitarist of his generation? Bea and Matt return to the Sound Like stage with Sir David Of Gilmourshire in their sights.
Titan of tone, sorcerer of sounds - how close can Bea and Matt get the Pink Floyd legend's sound? Er, on a budget…
They're just focussing on the cleaner, phasey sound for which Gilmour is known best. Maybe they can revisit some other sounds in a future video - let us know if you'd like that.
The gear they chose is as follows…
Fender Standard Stratocaster Plus Top, aged cherry burst goo.gl/CzNmGg - This product is currently unavailable, but check out our massive range of Fender gear here! - tinyurl.com/y3yvc6y3
Fender Hot Rod Deluxe - goo.gl/38a8GZ
MXR Phase 90 - goo.gl/w5JDKS
Tone City Tape Machine Delay - goo.gl/yR6dT8
MXR Dyna Comp - goo.gl/tK25jb
ps. we think they mean 'ethereal'.

Not too bad, son ....
Hahahah thanks dad, was hoping you'd see this!
Wassef Massaad I wish my Dad gave a shit that I play guitar. Kudos to you sir. :)
+jobless205 my dad plays guitar. It's awesome !!!
+jobless205 my dad plays guitar. It's awesome !!!
My dad it's very proud he saw my talent when I was a little kid now I'm a great guitar player and my dad is very happy for me P.S. sorry if I sound kind of douchy I don't want you to think that way
Gilmour's tone is pure ... there is no words really... it just is a sound that is unmistakable and everything great. I can listen to it forever, and it will never ever sound bad, or get old.
That tone is just lovely
I agree man, it just makes me feel it through my soul
+Tanner Mulford I agree, it's so beautiful!
Yes indeed it is just a undeniably beautiful sound, the kind of tone that inspires one to become a aspiring guitarist.😉
Vincent Adriaanse epically beautiful
Probably the greatest tone of all time. I could listen to you play that clean all day. So pleasing to the ears. I might actually go out and purchase this set up now.
Instead of practicing so I can sound like David Gilmour, I watch this. And I don't even have the money to buy these things.
+Cristian Gabriel same here, I'm here for the second time today. thankfully, I have a well-paying summer job lined up, so I'm going to invest in a few pedals and see what happens!
@CammojoDragon97 HI, I'm here 7 years into the future...lol Did you get your rig?
Sound like BB King Without busting the bank sounds like a nice title to me.
Miguel Fernandes Fender Hotrod Deluxe and a black Gretsch G5438 Pro Jet.
Miguel Fernandes DUDE I literally asked for the same thing 3/4 videos ago
That's actually a good comparison.
Fender HRD, epiphone lucille.
Miguel Fernandes The funny thing is that we all think of him with 'Lucille' The Gibson 'ES355' with no F holes and a Varitone and he famously used a Labseries L5 or L7 or a Fender Twin BUT a lot of what I consider his greatest records are recorded using a Fender Esquire. 'Everyday I have the blues' is most definately a Fender Esquire and the original version of that is brilliant. He never used fx.
This "sound like" series is very useful - I would never buy any gear to sound like anyone, but this series shows how various bits of gear complement eachother to produce good overall sounds. Good work, boys.
It's all in the fingers. And fingers are free. But a Strat sure helps.
***** So you wish to argue that David Gilmour does not sound like David Gilmour without chorus and delay?
I feel like you're purposely being dense as fuck. Sure, David Gilmour will always sound like David Gilmour no matter what he does, because he is David Gilmour. That's a basic Philosophy. But what does it really mean to sound like someone else? Gilmour wants and prefers to sound a certain way. The signature sound of someone is the sound of what that person prefers. If Gilmour were to use a specific chorus and delay most of the time, that would relay into his signature sound. Thus, when they say "sound like Gimour" what they really mean is "the sound in which Gilmour prefers: his signature tone." It's rather colloquial.
Well it would be less amazing without the ton of gears involved. I agree about the finger thing but for several songs, especially cleaner ones, you can't deny the importance of effects.
Shawn Bloe David could use any chorus or delay pedal and he would still sound awesome. But your typical noob could play Gilmour's studio rig set up and still not sound anything like David, because David's sound is not in his gear. It's in him.
1971SuperLead I see this argument so often it's ridiculous. If it's all in the fingers, why the hell is there ANY consideration for gear? It is NOT all in the fingers.
SOUNDS LIKE MASTODONNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN pls
Aidan Pouncy YES. PLEASE. Rabea and Matt!!
Dude yes, they i played bill keliher's halcyon les paul in andertons :D it's awesome
Why no fuzz? The solos on time and echoes are the best lead tones!
He knows... Needs more Big Muff
Michael Osztertag 'They're just focussing on the cleaner, phasey sound for which Gilmour is known best. Maybe they can revisit some other sounds in a future video - let us know if you'd like that. '
Michael Osztertag I think this is a great rig for about 85% or more of Gilmour tones. He certainly had some amazing fuzzed out solos, but a grand majority of his tone is really clean. This would be a great starting rig to get most of his sounds, then you could just buy a cheap big muff or silicon fuzz face (both between 60-80 pounds I believe) and get the rest of the way for his sound.
I get a perfect gilmour fuzz tone using my big muff nano and fulltone OCD at the same time I recommend trying it out
The Dyna comp actually acts as enough of a boost (placed AFTER a fuzz) tp get that singing Gilmour tone with any Big Muff or Silicon Fuzz face styled circuit! I'd say to nail the MOST of his tones, you might want to go for a Jimi Hendrix Fuzz Face Mini, a silicon fuzz which is much better than their regular one.
The cool thing about silicon is that it nails his early fuzz face tones and can really push into that smooth fat big muff range.
Focusing on his clean tone? He is world renowned for his creamy tone. A big muff which he uses is what you needed. David Gilmore is no one trick pony. You should have included the muff.
+khazz01 Could not agree more!
+khazz01 He also doesn't use reverb, a little known fact.
Yes that's exactly right
+2A yup Binson Echorec up until 1977 and from then on Digital Delay, first Boss pedals and nowadays I think he has a Providence on the recent tour. Might be multiple pedals for the Delay though.
+2A my bad he actually used MXR Digital Delay units from 77 on until the mid 80's
Very nice job guys. Funny how just 4 notes can give you goosebumps...
Sound like John Petrucci (Dream Theater) without breaking the bank
James Lewis that would be so sick!!!!!
+James Lewis Practice for 36,000 years and still not match up
True, but it would be nice to get some of those tones, even if it did mean my fingers would be scattered over the carpet!
They should have focused on his searing lead tone, since that's what he's known for and nobody can seem to duplicate it.
A challenge follow up!
+Michael Garcia Nobody can bend a string like David Gilmour. I swear, he is the only guitar player you can identify from just one note. And I can bend strings pretty well, anyone can, but David Gilmour really makes them sing. Also he does not waste a single note in his solos. They are stories in and of themselves.
Big muff by electro harmonics with delay and a little amp reverb gets you close.
I don't think there is anything more satisfying than finding the exact tone from the album and playing along. That "Shine on..." sound is absolutely spot on. Great job guys.
Absolutely beautiful. The genius of David Gilmour shines right through...like a Crazy Diamond.
I think these demos are great. Really informative for someone like me who lives 50 miles from the nearest music shop. I like Rabea too. Very clever guy, yet warm and good humoured with it - and honesty shines through. Keep up the good work guys!
Ethereal is a great word, when pronounced correctly..
Our bad! We'll brush up on our grammar before Series 2 ;-)
I really enjoy this series. I'm especially impressed by the pedal selections you use to achieve accuracy of the tones you are emulating.
Brilliant. Really happy you guys have done this after asking for suggestions on FB. Great job!
How can you do a Sounds like D Gilmore and not play Comfortably Numb?!
+BatFan1 NO SHIT RIGHT!!!!! WTF???
Get a velvet fuzz pedal and a electro harmonix chorus pedal m8
+Joe Deeping BIg Muff
I was thinking the same thing. That is the tone I was hoping to get out of this video.
I find the Big Muff does a great job!
The four notes that you play at the end of the video sounds darn good to me . I am just starting to learn but I have been a fan of Floyd Since 1979. So keep doing these videos.
finally! ive been waiting for this one forever!
If you watch Gilmour play that iconic four note progression live you will note that he doesn't use phase but gets the modulation by using his trem arm after playing the notes, it's quite distinctive and I do this with my strat.
Your version of "on a budget" differs from mine, sadly.
agreed, still expensive, but worth it I think once I can afford the amp or a good reverb pedal.
so does anyone have any suggestions for a cheaper amp than that, that fits blues rock as well as normal blues and ofc pink floyd stuff? I got an orange crush and its all i have right now it doesnt even take pedals and i want to record and stuff.. any help would be greatly appreciated
@sbjkd Because those 19 year old kids probably have parents that spoil them rotten. Doesn't mean that they'll play any better though. Usually those who had everything handed to them have all the stuff given to them, but not possessing the "right stuff".
well their "Budget" is Basically 1500 pounds for all of the gear needed
@@mrmasrawy92 marshall dsl 20 or dsl 40 of u can spend a bit extra
this actually sounds like gilmour! The sad part is: this is only ONE of his many great tones...probably need a hole lot of gear to dial in all of gilmour's tones
sounds fantastic! you nailed the Gilmour tone and sound! Thanks for the help!
Recommendations for spinoff series:
1. Start with a reasonable Strat and LP, add a DSL40C and use that as a basis. Then add pedals in each episode to emulate a particular guitarist.
2. Have regular installment episodes for the most popular guitarists, selecting a few songs (or album/era) per episode. I'm sure the most popular bands (Zep, Floyd, etc.) would keep you busy (and viewers engaged) for years.
3. Don't change a thing. I'd keep watching. lol
I'm a big fan. Thanks for doing this, Matt and Bea!!! 🤘🏻🎸
Sounds like Iron Maiden
And bring in Dave to do bass
Yes!!!
+ToxicLIL How to sound like Justin Chancellor without buying a $5k Wal bass?
they did it but unfortunately no Steve Harris rig, but the rig was
Fender HSH strat (cos they couldn't afford the £815 dave murray signature), Marshall DSL40C (cos the victory V100 is way too much) Cry Baby Wah Mini and MXR Analogue Chorus
Jackson SDX Adrian Smith Signature (i found this slightly unfair cos they could get the Adrian Smith Signature but not the dave murray), Marshall DSL40C and i think that was it
they should definately redo it with no budget
Luc yep
Great job ... you just nailed it spot on!
Watching the video i guessed you would pick a SuperChamp ... yeah ... not as stage worthy but great cleans on a budget and very usable reverb and delay ... but this HotRod is a powerhouse anyway. And the Phase90 just fits perfect! Nice!
Enjoying the vids, guys. Cheers.
Awesome show! Thank guys. :)
That's a very nice tone but i guess the budget is not restrictive enough for the challenge to be fun. Ending up with a Standard Strat, Hot Rod Deluxe and a couple of well known pedals... honnestly, what's the point ? Maybe you should lower the budget and dare to pick up real alternative low-budget gear.
I agree 100%
they do it like his because this is a cheap budget for performing musicians, which means that they can be at that 1500 pounds mark.
But they should have a series for stay at home players who just like doing covers with a budget of around 900
+chiripas12345 exact, Gilmour uses those cornish pedals That top 500$ easily, the phase 90 script is 180$ a good delay can reach easily 400$, a EHX muff is not free, a Tube driver is expensive, not talking of an Hiwatt head (3000$) and a good rotary...
Yup. For the gigging musician, you need a certain level of gear and that's gonna cost you.
If you're just playing around in your bedroom, you don't need so much gear. Especially if you can't afford it. Just pickup a Squier Classic Vibe Strat, Champion 40 amp, and a phaser pedal for 600.
Don’t forget Anderton’s wants people to come in and plop down £1400 for their gear. You could get all this and more on your phone or pc with bias/JamUp pro for under $50 and use the rest for a Strat and a speaker.
Sound like EVH
MrMyKamilsz If not on a budget you can just get a an EVH strat and EVH signature pedals.
If on a budget you can get a squire strat and a bunch of EVH sig pedals
We NEED a sound like EVH! Everyone knows how to vaguely get it, but no one I've seen has NAILED it, so I'd love to see what they do!
MrMyKamilsz Wampler Pinnacle + guitar with hot humbucker
I know but I want a video from them ;)
+budgetguitarist.com yep!!! Love my pinnacle. Big rock pro too. That's a killer pedal
Thanks Rabea really love hearing you play the slow clean stuff. Fantastic. Massive Gilmour fan too.
These videos are a great idea! Working with guitar geniuses like Rabea and Rob. Hats off Andertons - you're way ahead of the curve
Love these shows. And while not quite as mainstream or popular, but I'd love to see a Sound Like episode on Daniel Lanois or Robert Fripp.
I know this is 6 years late, but I’m learning guitar purely because of Pink Floyd and King Crimson. So, a Robert Fripp video would be amazing
Sound Like The Edge Without Busting The Bank
Strat, AC15 and 10 delay pedals
+YohAquino2 strat/budget Explorer, AC10, and delay pedal with preset capability. You also need good overdrive like TS9. other than that, you don't need that much.
What a fantastic idea for a video series! As players we all want to be able to replicate our favorite songs/tones, but some of us wouldn't necessarily know how to do it. Great idea and great video guys, I look forward to seeing more.
Awesome! I could sit there all day playing that with that combo.
And next Jack White :D
Paflig low output humbucker, big muff and a digitech whammy into a fender hot rod.
Paflig please, would be awesome
I was just about to write that they should do Jack White!
+JoeyRockerTV don't forget an old dilapidated organ to play the icky thump solos
Meat Helicopter 😂😂😂😂
Sounds like Billy Corgan would be good lads.
Really enjoy listening to you.
Thank you
Great job guys, thanks!
I'd like to suggest "Sound Like Clapton' and 'Sound Like The Edge'. Great series guys!
"affordable" "on a budget" your definition and my definition differs, like a lot! I could afford that if i have 3 jobs, and no family. lol
el van lorenzo these kind of comments are killing me! :D
excellent, love this series, great job guys!
You're amazing guys!
Pleeaaseee do Ritchie Blackmore!!!!!!!!
strat, marshall, distortion, nothing more.
I'd love to see the sort of tones he used in Gates of Babylon and Rainbow Eyes, not to mention Child in Time.
ENGL has a Blackmore signature model amplifier that nails the 'Blackmore sound'. 100 Watt Marshalls is what he used for many years. The secret to his pinchy fat tone however is an ancient Aiwa reel-to-reel tape recorder set on record/pause that he uses as a pre-amp boost. His volume knob on his Stratocasters has also been modified www.premierguitar.com/articles/23245-mod-garage-ritchie-blackmore-stratocaster-mods . Here is the best compendium of his gear and approximating it. If its not on this page it is not anywhere. www.treblebooster.net/blackmore.html
Ritchie was using modified (by Jim Marshall himself) 200 watt Marshall Majors. Super loud, tonally different from your standard 100 watter, and had tendencies to catch fire.
A sound like radiohead would be awesome
Great video guys!
Awesome tutorial! Greatings from Brazil!
Really can't sound like Gilmour without having a good sounding fuzz pedal..
Yeah I agree
yeah like they wouldn't be able to finish the song without it
+Swishy Muquos-milk yeah they could finish the song with a fucking banjo too ..what's your point !? it's called SOUNDS like.
Ma'am I'm feeling attacked from your hostility.
And a banjo would just mess it up more whats YOUR point, boi
+Joshua Martins Would a Big Muff Pi work? I'm likely picking one up in the next few days.
Great sounds, but that would not only break my bank it would quite possibly get me a divorce.
rezner101 Bare in mind that was buying all new. I dare say you wouldn't have to wait too long on ebay to get all that stuff at half price for second hand.
+chrisofnottingham yeah, I just sold my hotrod deluxe for £300. Nice amp for clean stuff, but didn't have the balls for what I'm doing at the moment. Got a marshall bluesbreaker now and that thing has an awesome tone.
+rezner101 maybe get a blues junior instead? if they put everything in front and do a clean sound anyway, the blues junior might work just as well and it's a bit cheaper.
Thanks for this. Very well done. Cheers.
I love it, the music sounds great man
How far apart is the warehouse and the store?
Sound like Dimebag Darrell please
Nice work guys!
great demo of Dave's sound. thank you
You're a really good guitar player.
Who is here in the vain hopes of hearing the Solos from Time, both solos from Numb, Another Brick part 2, Turning away? Everyone.
Who is here to hear Shine? Nobody.
"I could listen to that all day" - me too mate. Nailed it Rabea, nicely done.
Very Nice! You've dialed it in.I've dialed in a tone for the solo in TIME and boy does it make it fun to play! Great job guys!!!
Sound Like Eric Johnson?
Do sound like Ritchie Blackmore!
Hey @Andertons Music Co that's a damn beautiful shop. Thanks for putting this vid together. Going to watch Gilmour at the Hollywood Bowl next spring!
great video guys!
Sound like Yngwie Fucking Malmsteen next pleeeasse!!!!!!!!!!
do Brian May of Queen
Brian May guitar strait into an ac30
+B Thomas yeah but I've seen people do that and they still don't get the sound
Treble boost as well, I think
Brian May is probably the most difficult one. He has an extremely complex set up. It's impossible to do it in a budget.
+Loferix gaming its actually really simple. There's a rig rundown here on RUclips. its his special guitar, played with a penny --> treble booster --> Vox.
Nicely done, boys. Respect.
You did a good job of that. Cheers guys!
Kinda disappointed you didnt do any of his solo tones. A big muff or a fuzz face in there would have been sick.
Was expecting a Big Muff haha
Man GREAT VIDEO.Thanks this is the best Sound I heard.I am Investing...
I know this is an old video, but I have tried the other RUclips videos on this tone and this makes the most sense.
Like in the great gig in the sky? Sorry what?
He means the endless sustain of the pedal steel Gilmour plays in the intro.
watch?v=lau4tN91A9E
zaxmaxlax
lol
Michael Purdie Abbott 😂😂🤣
Can you do sound like Mattias Jabs?
Very cool. Thank you for this video and I hope you have more "Sound like" video's of others!
Regards from the US.
Very nice job, thank you for sharing.
You guys should do a Sound like Larry Lalonde and just go for a total pedal-gasm while working out his rig.
adam jones 10000 days album
Aww! Was hoping for a wee bit of comfortably numb!
But that sound is just brilliant. Those four notes just take you to another place man.
Gilmour's my favourite player and these are the sorts of tones I'd normally play with and I think they've done a brilliant job.
Lovely warm, clean tone they managed to get for a pretty good price too. Fantastic.
Sound like Eric Johnson without busting the bank.
I wish the phase 90 had a level control.
***** i've got a script phase 90 and a bunch of other stuff in my fx loop (chorus/delay/boost etc) with nothing clever by way of level control, is there a way to fudge the level for just the phaser that you know of?
***** No fx loop, blues jr etc
No. Everything in front.
Tom Park Mine has. It's an easy mod.
So awesome! Great job!!!
best one really nailed it not only the tone but the video
Please do a Sounds Like Stevie Ray Vaughan. You did John Mayer so how can you not do the legend?
I'm sorry but just the spring reverb of the hot rod doesn't do it at all, you really need a seperate pedal for Gilmour's spacy verbs imo.
Yes, that sounds just like Gilmour! Very nice. It's a damn good video, just what I was looking for. Now, I want all the equipment in that room, please.
You guys did great on this one. You nailed that opening line to Shine On. Thats for sure.
Should have gotten a fender blues Jr III to save money
strat with a maple neck
emg dg20
blues jr
boss me80
simple as
Its so complicate, if ypu dont want to spend a lot Of Money, your list Is right
spot on as they say ... sounds great to me, thanks!
sounds just about spot on for the budget especially, nice playing Rabea!
Do Jimmy Page next. I'd love to see what you guys can come up with.
Have they done it yet
You'd have to change it for almost every album, he heavily customized his guitars all the time as an ongoing thing.
Plz Do Sound Like Avenged Sevenfold!!!!
Great Job Boy's Sound's Beautiful !
That Gilmour sound is spot on! Great job.
