@@AndyTolly123 yeah HW1 and some of 2 was really good but most of the tracks were just rearranged from 1-3, H4 isn’t bad but it’s just very bland and kinda generic for its lack of identity, I can’t remember many of its tracks even if I try
I would love to see Marty and Michael come back to Halo someday, but the composers for Infinite did a fantastic job of capturing the sound of the older games, while also bringing their own style and unique flavor to the table.
10:50 loved your reaction, out of everything, this part of the track is like the child of the OG stuff, like it really feels to me like where halo's sound is heading, which thematically makes sense with the endless, I wont go into spoliers, but it makes alot of sense.
I think it is interesting that the track you loved most is the one based on the new faction and therefore also a completely new theme (if I am not mistaken). It is amazing though and even if it is a new theme, it works perfectly with the Halo Soundtrack
Just watched this and it’s so nice to see someone really taking those deep dives into music that I personally LOVE. So happy to be subscribed now. SUGGESTION: I think you should review the other Halo soundtracks, specifically Halo 3:ODST, as the use of motifs reworked throughout that soundtrack is phenomenal!
DAMN IT he skipped the finale, I would've loved to hear your thoughts, it combines the piano of 3, chiefs theme, and a bunch of other stuff that really leaves on a satisfying note, while not feeling like a complete ending, which is exactly what the story needed
I just discovered your channel via this video. I have never had words to describe how much I love the Halo Soundtracks. Most of the time while I work during the day, im listening to them. Your explanations and breakdowns of why these pieces sound so good is incredibly educational and motivating. Thank you!
lol I love how the start of this is literally just a remake of "A walk in the woods" and he connects it with something from 3, just goes to show how connected all of halo's music is
Gotta say, you really transmitted your passion about the whole thing, when The Road hitted I got genuine chills and when Reverie played, you got me a little bit emotional. Thank you for the excellent video ♥
Always love your analysis and break-down of music, demonstrations and calling out the specific techniques is also super helpful for additional research!
Love your take on the soundtrack as a whole. Was hoping for a little more input/reaction on the 'Escharum' track. Love the drum sequence in pace with the bass at the crescendo.
just found out this channel, and subscribed! two tracks missing here that I wish you would react to: 'Through The Trees' (classic walk in the woods rendition) and 'Set a Fire In Your Heart'
I'm glad people are taking a look at the halo soundtrack. Marty o'donnell specially is shit is a masterpiece I hope they get him to help on the dlcs for music🙏
Hey Zach! Great video - I'd love to see more content on Halo. Maybe a video on how the main theme evolves through the games? I was actually a bit disappointed by Infinite's rendition, it's in keeping with the 'back to basics' approach for sure, but to my (untrained) ear there's no elaboration at all on the core arrangement. Of course it's referenced heavily in other tracks, but even Halo 1's theme had some wild wailing if you listen back. Each of the games after that puts a fun new spin on it. H2 had the Steve Vai mjolnir mix, H3 has a wonderful piano part. Then the theme isn't in the next three games, but comes back interpolated with Halo 4's '117' theme in the Halo 5 track 'the Trials'. I actually love that version. There's also the 'Scorpion Mix' for Halo 2 Anniversary which is very brassy and great. Would also love to watch a series following the music of each game in order. We all love O'Donnell's work, sure, but I actually think Kazuma Jinnouchi's work on H5 is absolutely wonderful. 'Light is Green' knocks my socks off every time.
Thanks to you I finally know what instrument makes that awesome sound at 11:00. The first time I heard it used by James Newton Howard! This type of video is really educational! Maybe you can approach this style of video with your own work as well, as to not get demonetized.
just found oyur channel and i love it when musicians or composers react or breakdown video game music. just so fun to see your reactions. If you're looking for more video game OSTs, i highly HIGHLY recommend music from the Ace Combat series. Its a fighter jet game that just celebrated 25 years and is host to some very powerful, emotional and iconic songs. Just to start some i suggest Ace Combat 7's "Daredevil", Ace Combat 6's "Liberation of Gracemeria", Ace Combat 5's "Unsung War" and finally Ace Combat Zero's "Zero" songs. there are hundreds more but this is a good selection to dive into. Also to note, each game in the series has a fairly unique instrumental sounding soundtrack as well, for example AC5 is more chanting while Zero has a Spanish theme.
Zach! been watching you for a while. Love your work. Halo's soundtrack is amazing, and watching you react, along with insightful commentary is always a pleasure :D
I love reaction videos like this! Your analysis and breakdown is easy to understand and one of the best, with that, really making the soundtrack shine in a new light! Also...are suggestions allowed for next reactions?...
I apologize for the late reply! But I would really find it amazing if you could react to the Soundtrack of Re:Zero, especially the piece Requiem of Silence ❤️
I know all the halo soundtracks, and they use progressions from halo 3 with some of the tracks using styles from the other games as well. Most notably, at some points, the percussion is very similar to halo reach
The ending of Tower is super emotion and epic! Also Heavy Artillery is one of my personal favorites! The tones of heroism is Amazing!!! Been listing to the OSTs since day one of all releases and love them all, besides halo 2, this is my 2nd favorite :). Love the review and comments on the pieces!!
I would greatly appreciate if you you did this again but after going though the Martin’s previous work. 2:04 for instance is definitely halo 3 but I wouldn’t be surprised if it had roots in halo combat Evolved 2:36 is definitely a reference to halo 2 4:50 this is almost definitely a reference to released from halo 3 and a lot of vibes from Reach (the specifically) 6:45 this is a reference to a walk in the woods. 8:41 I would have to check but I do believe that this is one of O’Donnells track and not the anniversary edition. 11:00 that is a halo 4 reference. The voices specifically 11:49 same here 12:53 this sounds like odst kind of. 16:39 Elephants? 19:06 this is a halo 2 reference. “To give the Covenant back their bomb.” These are all the specific references I got from the vid but I’m sure there are more. If your interestedI would also be sure to check out reach and ODST as I wouldn’t be surprised if they were referenced in very small parts as their full introduction would take away from the themes already in place.
On one of the videos not sure which one Marty actually left a comment which said Nice Music so safe to say he probably approved of hearing it. Though Royalty thingy since both 343 and MS at the time refused to give him and Michael Salvatori credit. Though it seems like that changed. Awhile back.
4:30 Incase this wasn't clear, those beging "cues" as you called them were directly referencing Halo 3, I think its the start of never forget but I think theres another track that has closer chords
Loving this video and seeing your reactions to the soundtrack. I'd love to see you react to the Halo 4 and 5 soundtracks as well since you're familiar with Marty's work. Halo 4 & 5 go to some interesting places musically.
Seems like I'm so desensitized from the real beauty of the score, always hearing it in the background while waiting in an online lobby or idling the menus. Sometimes you have to stop and appreciate the writing and musicianship
Great video, love the way you break things down and recreate the theme yourself. Are you a self taught composer is this something you study at university? Really glad I found your channel as I listen to music scores all the time and have been wanting to get into it for a while now just as a hobby. Looking forward to the future content.
6:25 They were aloud to use his music, and there are many parts where they did, Hunters Dance and Through the Trees are basically copies that they added to. Marty is sueing them over this though, he things its not fair he isn't getting any credit for this tracks which are closer to remixs than their own thing
I imagine it's hard to keep a legend going when you're not allowed to really use the music (Marty's fought over rights before, most notably with Destiny music he composed). It's very likely he fought and maybe won the rights to Halo's legendary theme that he created, so moving forward, it's not surprising they've made their own iterations of the song.
It's been a while i didn't comment on your yt but hey i'm still here x) it's really cool that you started type of video like this and the analyse is always on point i would like to suggest to react to some of genshin impact music x)
I can't help but hurt a little whenever I see someone with Beyerdynamic headphones. They're...fine...but usually a sign that you got some not-so-good audio advice from someone who isn't exactly an expert.
I got a suggestion from one of my favorite soundtracks "Hollow Knight" the composer Chirstopher Larkin did amazing job. Would definitely take a look if you have the chance. Also your videos are really great! 👌
The copyright question isn't exactly answered. To this day, the Halo music is owned by O'Donnell Salvatori Inc., and was always licensed to Bungie (and Microsoft, after it's acquisition), and there's still an ongoing lawsuit to deal with 20-years of unpaid royalties that Microsoft's been vague on (Marty pointed it out every time something happened, with Halo 1 shipping, with the acquisition, he even added a addendum to his contract that stated the licensing agreement vs. ownership, and probably more occasions than just that), but Microsoft's been claiming that the soundtrack's written while working as an employee of Bungie, and therefor it's work product. Long story short, regardless of the outcome of that, I bet that in anticipation of that, the new composer's been slowly trying to transition away from it through this new interpretation.

Same with World of Warcraft.
meh h5 wasn't great and only some parts of 4 were really good. Anything Marty touched was an instant classic though

DEFINITELY not Marty. He’s fucking crazy now and him being part of a new halo game would look terrible for Microsoft and 343
How is he crazy? @@Commander_Appo
The Halo soundtrack is a high fantasy soundtrack in a futuristic war setting. So unique

That first song you listened to in the video is actually a remake of Under Cover of Night so they did use Marty and Michael's music.

Hey, I think you skipped the "Silent Auditorium". That one hits hard. Great vid and very well explained
Think you could cover Destiny? I feel like that space fantasy feel in the soundtrack carried over once Bungie left Halo. Check it out!

“endless” has to be by far my favorite beginning to a halo song ever
