Ingrid Andress: Tiny Desk Concert

Ingrid Andress performs and speaks with a humility that feels inversely proportional to the scale of her success. Given that she's already received four Grammy nominations, and that her team had to navigate NPR's busy and construction-forward D.C. neighborhood in a tour bus only slightly smaller than an aircraft carrier, that adds up to a fair bit of humility.
For Andress, writing songs often means having to explain yourself. Between songs at the Tiny Desk, she wrangled with her place in country music - as a Colorado-bred singer-songwriter who sings and speaks without a twang - and with the truths she's capturing and conjuring in her songs. "Yearbook," about a curdled high-school romance, appears to be about her parents, but that required an explanation, too: "I always have to say, it's not about my parents. Because they really want everyone to know that. So, it sounds like it's about them. But when I write songs, sometimes I take from things that I have observed - like, other people's stories."
All three of the songs she played at the Tiny Desk - "Yearbook," her 2020 breakthrough ballad "More Hearts Than Mine" and her current country hit "Feel Like This" - have ways of digging up clear-headed truths, no matter how she came about locating them. "Feel Like This" captures what Andress describes as an uncharacteristic sense of optimism, while returning to one of her favorite themes: the radical change that comes with shedding the toxicity of bad relationships.

who else came here after watching the National Anthem?
Had to see if she could actually sing cuz I’m confused 😭
ME!! Stuuuned this is the same girl.
@@gelloproductions3157 she doesnt sing... she speaks softly in this. her register is around the same as normal talking range. its why the anthem pulled her undone.
I wonder if she was having vocal problems at the time of the National Anthem because this is beautiful.
@@Tercerdivisa1 this isn't really singing though. There's no range, it's almost talking. People pass it off as singing by making their voice soft and doing affectations
We all know why we’re here
😂🫣
Yeah lol 😂
😂 seriously
I had to see if she could actually sing
Hahahahha
Now, it all makes sense. She sounds😮 good if she stays in her very small pocket. Once she tries to go up a note, you can hear she starts screeching.
this is 100% edited and tuned.
@@anotheryoutubed too many imperfections for that to be the case
"Good" is still a bit of a reach here.
Search for Domi's reharmonization of her national anthem and it will make a lot of sense
Her voice within a very strict range has a nice sound to it. Basically a range that’s similar to talking. Someone people don’t really have pipes but have a nice talk singing kind of voice
Who's here after the National Anthem to see who she is and if she could actually sing. Man, my ears are still bleeding.
😂
🙋🏻♂️
🙋♂️
God bless her mixing engineer
Audio Engineer about to quit if he doesn't get a raise after the summer 😂
My first producer told me, “Find the kinds of songs you sound great singing and just do those. If someone begs you to sing Happy Birthday and you don’t sound good doing it, don’t do it.” Best advice I ever got. Her voice just may not be suited to The National Anthem.
Not to mention her inability to hear what key she's singing in without an instrument to guide her. Her entry notes here are questionable even with a band giving her the sound of the tonality, seems some pitch training is worthwhile either way.
Great advice
Well it’s obvious here that her voice falls into a new category of “oh yeah you’re voice is pretty!” mixed with current production technology. Horrible voices like hers which sound ever so slightly decent at low volume, lacking any capacity for projection, can be turned decent by autotune and other devices. The standard of voice quality has diminished tremendously because of this.
she doesn't have a great voice even for the songs she sings, never mind the Anthem.
Her voice ain't much better here and her story telling sucks. Just another pretty industry plant.
If this is what it takes to be a Grammy Award winner than I will continue to pursue my dreams.
Does she sound bad here to you?
She didn’t win a Grammy. But she was nominated 4 times.
@Ethan-fh9lq Not as bad as the national anthem, but even in this she's a little pitchy and is only singing like 2 notes.
@@Ethan-fh9lq Yes, out of tune and no power. I came here to see if she usually sings badly, and she does. Ouch, some of those notes, even in a simple sing with a very small range. There was no way she could have sung the national anthem adequately.
Then not than
At this point I have to wonder why the audio engineer has not been nominated for Grammy not to mention the whole production even if they have to invent a new category
😂😂😂😂😂😂💯💯💯💯💯💯💯
She can't pitch notes at all. Just talks to cover it.
I want her to come to my country to sing our national anthem.
She will united my country like she did in the US !
We’re united in our confusion and bleeding ears.
😂😂

she turned off her comments so im here lol

She was quick with it too.
Fr 😂 @@achsahisrael252
Maybe it's part of the plan as we are all searching her up and watching other performances 😂
Probably. That was my first thought @@sarahmitchell8385
From a singer:
1) she strains a lot, I noticed this throughout. No wonder it was hard to reach the higher notes on the anthem. Primarily singing in her chest voice, and doesn’t seem to have proficiency in her upper registers to properly belt the higher notes.
2) doesn’t have a lot of control over her voice and seems to have difficulty with runs, which shows she is way too tight with her voice/neck/jaw muscles and doesn’t place her voice properly - causing her not to have control, and causes a lot of STRAINING ugh - can’t imagine how raw her voice gets.
She has a lot of potential in her voice. She is a good lyricist, and her voice is great for folk/country songs. She has a great storytelling voice. However, to do a more demanding song, like the anthem, it’s so hard with throaty chest voice singing lacking proper placing and super strainy. And she doesn’t use proper diaphragm breathing which makes belting and control so hard…But she is good at what she does in her career, let’s get that straight.
Yea fr she def has a lot to improve on vocal techniques but no serious musician would call this “terrible”
@@wavecityfox7900 for sure
Maybe she's singing too high?
Thanks for this, totally agree. She might be a great writer and lyricist, no comment there. In terms of vocal difficulty, this is something a choir of 3rd graders would sing. It sounds ok. It is pitchy and shaky on the highest notes here. Lots of nasal heard. And it's a small number of notes. Speaky vocals work for some stuff but certainly not for the anthem. The anthem is a difficult song vocally.
After hearing the anthem, I question whether she has had any substantial music or vocal training. There are many talented and trained vocalists (try any college vocal program) who would give a limb to sing the anthem at a large event.
@anonreviews572 I read in her wiki bio that she attended a music school for college, but she dropped out before completing the degree. Something about not agreeing with the school's teaching methods.
I had to click on it just to make sure she could sing under different circumstances
She can't she is talking softly lol 😅
@Billiam-5858 Actually no! I mean she's not my favorite style but she's ok
Wow, she's still bad
No same lol
I think we all did lol
To be honest she really excels as a lyricist! The story telling is beautiful and to be honest I don’t mind her range. Yes the National Anthem may have not been her best suite but this type of folk/country really is up her alley. :)
The National Anthem actually requires a larger range vocally. I didn't realize this until a music teacher friend told me. I've sung it multiple times for my alma mater, my local college for mostly basketball games. I knew if I didn't start low enough it would be more difficult but it's one of my favorite songs to sing. Always makes me sad to hear it not sung well. It didn't sound like she practiced much or possibly she had been drinking or was so nervous lost her notes. Some people really don't do well acapella 🤷 But hey... It got a lot of new views on her videos! 😂
Exactly what can be said about Taylor Swift. Excels as a lyricist with great story telling and an ok vocal range. She would butcher the National Anthem too. Doesn’t mean she’s bad at what she does though.
Agreed here! I think the lyricism is where her career will excel. It definitely wasn't Just the alcohol, she is a little pitchy even in videos like this. The national anthem wasn't a great choice, and the alcohol definitely didn't help. I hope she gets the help she needs and I hope she finds happiness in whatever she does :)
@@PearlsandDenim She admitted to drinking before the performance. I teach vocal music as well and am in the midst of a doctorate on the subject, and have seen firsthand how alcohol affects the performing voice. And yes, the National Anthem does require a larger range. She's not a bad singer by any means in her genre. It was just a bad night fueled by a poor choice she's working on fixing.
You described taylor swift
I came here for the same reason as many others recently did, but I'm seeing a lot of negative comments and wonder if it really would be the case without the context of her national anthem performance.
I am enjoying listening to this concert. She sounds great and seems like a down-to-earth person.
Anthem was a train wreck. This? Not so bad. She has a very slim range and the anthem ain’t in it!
Because she isn’t live here. People can’t tell when someone is not singing live and how easy is to make anyone sound good, playback.
@@User12345fan She is live though. Watch 2:15
@@User12345fantiny desk is not playback at all. If it was playback they woulda made it more in tune. Why are people so obsessed about perfection these days. Have you not heard bob dylan? Which is my favourite singer of all time
All you people saying this video proves she can actually sing. If you listen closely, when she's doing runs, she's all over the place. She drops out of key a LOT during this song. She doesn't have a good ear for tone and pitch.
Yup...very pitchy..and this is a simple melody.
She's like most singers nowadays, they all slide into notes. None of them are singers first, its all just image... or the "indie voice" like she is doing.
She also doesn't demonstrate enough support to sustain a note or a phrase for any length of time; which is why she is able to get away with the poor intonation here.
This is a perfect example of what's wrong with America smh
I'm hearing a lot more talking than singing
Sound engineer here. I can say that someone else messed up bad with her live setup. Probably the auto tune settings. So please don't give her anymore hate as it's not deserved.
Also before anyone says she shouldn't be using auto tune live then I have news for you. Most artists would, even your precious Beyonce. It's common practice.
The autotune did a bad job of covering all her complete inability to pitch notes during this performance.
Think it's just that she speaks her lines rather than singing them, because she can't sing.
0:00 - More Hearts Than Mine
5:39 - Feel Like This
11:15 - Yearbook
This style of music and performance space really suits her.
who does she know in the industry because there is no way they thought her voice was for the national anthem????
She can’t sing good but if it’s her writing these songs then she is a great song writer! Another artist needs these songs!!
Id listen just the way it is, not everyone has to be exceptional
thats what willie nelson lou reed intended to do w their careers, then people liked their limited singing, then there is Bob Dylan, he does it all one of kind, pharrell is off key live but writes and records great songs.
She’s a great storyteller…and I agree with her we need more of that in music.
Thanks Tiny Desk for introducing me to Ingrid. She's very good. It's nice to see a little modern country on here. Please introduce your viewers to Sierra Ferrell soon.
She's wonderful.

Good voice for cruising in the car. Baby girl just don’t know her voice limits.
Same with Taylor Swift. She would butcher the national anthem as well.
But it’s her management and label’s job to know her limits and they don’t either. They shouldn’t have ok’d that performance.

Her lyrics are so wistful, insightful, poignant. Adore her.
Simply brilliant PR. Here we all are. Never heard of her before the anthem. Pretty voice.
She has a gorgeous voice but within a range and I think she was pushing beyond her range and likely some nerves. But obviously she writes beautiful songs
@@Sonnylintag the PA echoing back flat at her threw her off. It could happen to anyone who's never tried to sing in that setting before.
Came here after seeing the national anthem performance. At first I thought how tf is this a Grammy nominated artist? Now I totally get it, she’s actually a fantastic songwriter and musician. Came here to hate some more, left a big fan.
White mediocrity.
Agree with genuine talent in the songwriting and playing
I would’ve never heard about her if she didn’t sing the national anthem. I thought she was a young girl that just saw auditioned for the national anthem and got the gig. She’s not bad. She has a mellow airy voice. Her tone is nice. She was nominated 4x at the Grammys. I’m an aspiring singer/songwriter and never made it big. I sang the national anthem at many games in acapella. I’m now a mom of 4 and haven’t had time to focus on my singing.
I love Tiny Desk for these discoveries, just yesterday I was watching Bono and Edge (my age) and today I discover a talented songwriter with a beautiful voice and great stories!
You should hear her sign the anthem
I don't typically go out of my way to listen to country, but I'm glad I clicked on Ingrid's Tiny Desk link. I'm impressed with this young country singer. She doesn't have that Nashville twang that normally turns me off, so It's nice to be able to focus on the music and the story instead of being concerned about the delivery. Thank you NPR for all of these Tiny Desk Concerts.
Country??
@@grandenauto3214 country music??
I've been a huge fan of her ever since I first heard "More Hearts Than Mine" 4 years ago.
Oooof.
The National Anthem is deceptively hard. It exposes a lot of singers.
The range of the song is an octave + 5 notes, (it's 2 full octaves if you want to do the extra high note on "land of the freeeee"). Listening to these songs played here, the tessitura is an octave or less and the range maxes out at an octave + 3 notes. Additionally her "belt" tone is not connected to her breath support--it's done with straining or pinching the vocal folds.
If any part of your vocal tone isn't connected to your breath, or you have poor breath management (her breathy tone is healthier than her belt, but the breathiness means that there is a lot of unused/wasted breath in her tone)......it will HUMBLE you. The National Anthem is hard, folks.
I hope she gets with a vocal coach to hone healthier vocal production.
for real, ppl don't realize how low and high the pitches in our anthem are. also, prob why so many singers end up modifying it heavily so it works for them.
This is why we should change the National Anthem to Bangarang /j
All that is well and good. But all that great and in depth information has nothing to do with her pulling the equivalent of lying on her resume. At this point, most people, and certainly ALL artist know the complexity of the National Anthem. That's why many of the mediocre vocalist shy away from the challenge. She accepted the gig, and crashed and burned in EPIC fashion.
True
Good vocalist + alcohol= Bad vocalist. Hope she gets the help she needs!
Now that I've heard her, I'm not surprised she couldn't handle the National Anthem. That song is honestly quite hard and should really only be sung by people with powerhouse voices. You know, if they asked Taylor Swift to sing the National Anthem the same thing would probably happen. She seems to a lot like Taylor in that neither of them sing all that well, but they are great song writers. You barely have to be able to sing to be a succesful singer in contemporary music, as long as you can get the "vibe" right.
This is one of the only videos i could find of her that hasn't turned off the comments.
wow really, well she dont own this one its npr
😂😂
Had to check if she can actually sing. She's sings beautifully, I feel bad for her addiction and she probably overdid it being anxious for the hr derby anthem. Wish you a speedy recovery Ingrid!
The whole rehab thing is just the publicist telling her that there needs to be an excuse. This had nothing to do with substance abuse and everything to do with her inability to pitch notes.
@@whatilearnttoday5295 have you ever heard her sing live in an intimate setting?

It's one of the greatest lines ever written.
Beautiful, first song wow great lyrics
Yes, lyrics are fine. I have no words or comments on the grammy nominated voice though.
I understand now, that she is not a bad singer, but it’s only she sings in whispers. She lacked the volume and composure required to perform the national anthem.
And the sobriety.

She's actually a great singer. Very unique sound. I don't know what happened at the ASG. That song can get if you try to freestyle too much.
Completely out of her range I think. Sounds like me trying to sing the high notes of I Will Always Love You at a karaoke bar
national anthem is too high for her
Boring with no range
The Star Spangled Banner is notoriously difficult to sing. You have to start at the bottom of your vocal range.
Beautiful Soul and inspiring Sound. All the best for you guys!
Yes, I came to this video for the same reason you guys did. :-) First song is lovely with a strong Nashville lyric. She had two other co-writers on it, so, as artist, it’s difficult to know how much were her contributions. She has an appealing voice, though small, which could use a bit of training. She certainly has some talent and I wish her well. The business is tough enough as is, so I hope she gets her act together- the Nat’l Anthem was truly abysmal! FWIW, i’ve been a professional musician nearly all of my long life, including a stint as a Nashville songwriter for 10 years.
I had never heard of this woman before seeing people trash talking her national anthem online and seeing this video, it's apparent that she just has a very limited vocal range and writes around it.
Her lyrics are great and that's likely what got her as far as she is in the music industry (along with being conventionally attractive, of course). Her style is mostly speak-singing because of that lack of range, and during choruses and such when she does have higher notes, the flatness comes out.
The star spangled banner is notorious for being hard to sing because it has a 12 note range and not everybody was born with that and needs training to achieve that. It's apparent in this video that she hasn't had that training but that's okay because that's not her priority.
Her priority seems to be storytelling, which is also valuable in this industry. She would probably be more successful as only a songwriter and not a singer but if she wants to sing, let her sing! As long as she continues to only sing songs that are within her range, there shouldn't be a repeat of that baseball game.
Exactly. I came here after hearing her sing the Anthem, because I wanted to hear her sing her own songs and get a sense of her as a songwriter. She's a storyteller songwriter, more than a vocalist. I really like these three songs lyrically.
Beautiful lyricist! ❤ I had to run the first song back halfway through just to appreciate the words, off to listen to her Spotify with a glass of wine! 🍷
I bet she would sound great singing the national anthem.

I guess she's ok for songs that stay within one octave and don't require any volume
She’s not a horrible singer but she clearly is lacking the range for the National Anthem.

Now this genre makes sense, it’s not singing. It’s more peacefully speaking. 😅
........the Journey continues and we are here with her.... many thanks again...❤❤❤

Well, she can sing, but this is a different kind of "heady" voice song. The National Anthem is very hard to sing and requires much more diaphram pressure. Being sober helps too. :)
she stole my heart on that first verse
