@@eventerkeira No, likely not, but Valegro got decent turn out throughout his career, I believe something along the lines of 12 hours. He was an Olympic horse so your point is invalid; being an elite level horse does not negate the need for decent turnout.
@@eventerkeira It has been well proven that bones, tendons, ligaments etc are stronger when horses are raised and kept outside. If you were kept in a closet 23 hours a day your body would lose strength and ability as well.

@@lclarke7280 I know that, there was a mare taken to WSU because she broke her cannon bone or something like that, she was put in a paddock. By the time they examined her, she was almost completely healed, because of the circulation
this is so so different to the yards we have in England... even the top horses such as Burghley winners or top showjumpers all get regular turn out, rather than spending most of their lives in stables....
Hate when places have big turn out fields, but still keep thier horses pinned up in stalls that look like jail cells. At least have an opening where they can stick thier head out.

The facility is beautiful, but not giving your horses turnout is really sad. The less you turn them out, the more likely they will be to injure themselves due to having too much energy when they do go out. If they got regular turnout they would be much better off and much less likely to injure themselves. They may not be getting physically injured being constantly stalled, but certainly they will get mentally injured. Plus, a happy horse will perform its job better, so why wouldn't you want them to be happier?

I know he said he does turn them out, but the way he describes it sounds more like "you can go out, but you can't do anything you wouldn't do in a stall." This kind of defeats part of the purpose of turnout. and I highly doubt they get adequate time out.
Mindful Madnezz some of these horses cost nearly 100,000$. if i spent that much on a horse i defiently would not want them hurting themselves all the time. as long as they are able to stretch there legs and eat some grass, its fine. horses dont need to be running around all the time.
I understand how much most of these horses cost, but they are still animals, not objects. I never said stalling them and supervising them was bad. None of that is, if it's balanced. They're more likely to hurt themselves if they don't get to go out regularly. Regular turnout removes the "Oh my god I'm going out!?!" energy because it will be a regular, non overstimulating, thing. Most horses that I know who are out 24/7 or on a day/night turnout routine rarely, if at all, hurt themselves. I see more injuries occurring with horses stuck inside most of the time with limited turnout and socialization.
His exact words were “if they really let loose” let’s me honest. With what this man has seen and ridden, his definition of let loose is probably a whole lot crazier than what we think of. Even for someone who turns out 24/7, they would probably bring their horse in if they were going to injure themselves :) I’m sure they get plenty of turnout, and certainly get all the care they need to be happy and perform mentally and physically at the level they do
I love the barn and the arenas etc. But horses NEED to be outside the majority of the day! I leave my pony out 24/7 during end of spring up until whenever the winter weather starts getting bad (we're in Ireland) and only bring him in when the weather is horrible because he hates being wet. As long as the weather is acceptable my pony will be out because it's natural for a horse to graze the majority of the day and walk around and not be cooped up all the time
He's never been injured ever from being outside and I own him 3 years, yes I know he's not a warm blood but he still is an equine with the same basic needs and wants, he runs around the same and scratches/rolls and he's fine, he's a horse and so he should be able to act like one ☺️
Ours are paddocked 24/7 and they never go crazy.
I am sure horses don't care about yearly painted stable/stall doors, we humans do. They would rather live 24h in a pasture with other horses, socialize, groom each other, play with each other and stretch their legs.
Sure, I can agree it is a really nice property. But my horse will never end up in a stall, no matter how nice looking, big and clean it is.

They live outside 24h a day in a rotation of several pastures (as a herd) from April to late October or even November, if the weather is agreeable and enough grass/forage is left. In November we bring them into an open stable (free stall barn - I'm not sure if that is the correct translation, my native language is German) which has a large paddock, where they can live, play, eat hay, rest and walk around freely as a herd. If I could, I would leave them in pasture the whole year, but the weather in Germany during winter-months is kind of nasty. But sometimes the weather is good enough to bring them back onto the pasture for a few days, even in winter.
And yes, I do ride and work my horse almost daily. I just have to go and fetch him from the pasture, before I do it.
If I, a human, want to keep a pet (for my personal enjoyment), no matter if it is a cat, a dog, a parrot, a hamster or a horse, it is my duty to care for its wellbeing. In my opinion that includes creating a living enviroment suited to its needs and as similar to how mother nature intended, as it is possible. By nature horses are/need to:
1.) herd-animals > putting them in stalls is against their very nature, they can't groom, interact or play with each other
2.) graze/eat hay 16 to 18 hours a day > two little hay meals a day isn't enough, because their stomachs produce accid around the clock
3.) nomadic animals > wild horses are constantly moving from pasture to pasture or to water sources, walking huge distances (20 to 30 miles) every day; and even domesticated horses, when allowed to graze in a pasture, will walk anywhere between 4 to 9 miles a day, depending on the size of the pasture and other factors (age, breed, health, ...).
So NO, I don't put my horse(s) in a stall, because of all the above mentioned reasons. If I didn't have the space (pastures), time, knowledge or money to keep a horse, I would not want to. The only rare exception is and illness or injury which requires that a horse has to be treated or has to rest a limb.
Nightgrauen that’s a really cool way of treating it I’ve never seen it done that way . My family tries as little as possible to put our horses in and only do at night out because they love to run and are older and do not see well + because they were raised with stalls they will only sleep in those stalls. It is very cool however to hear a different and successful way of raising them !

A horse doesn’t see beauty in a stable like this. Seeing their friends through cell bars is not a luxury. Their only injury risks to you because you need them to make your money. I used to idolize places like this, but understanding horses more, all horses see in places like this is confined and jailed abuse. Their is no room for them to be themselves. Beauty is the enemy of the horse.
Jennifer Trujillo how is is abuse? The horses will be exercised regularly and fed the best food for them to develop as an athlete... yes horses are used for money but it keeps the sport alive and can involve need people/ business into the equestrian world
I’m speaking in a way of seeing life like a horse and their natural instincts. They are not naturally for sport or business. A horse will be good at something if you can show how it benefits them by working with their natural instincts and not against them. They are a fear based, heard animal. He says so in the video. If they’re heard animals, keep them in a heard. They shouldn’t need to buck if they have free movement available 24/7. The only reason for then to not be out 24/7 is because horse bites and scuffs and unkept hooves aren’t “pretty” enough. What I’m trying to say that a horses natural existence should not be compensated for the sake of our business or convenience.
JJHLLYWP Xox It’s abuse because although it’s pretty, horses don’t think “oh yay I’m glad I get to see my little pal through these bars.” That’s foolish. Horses become bored and stressed being inside and barred in, especially with a low roof. Open spaces are safe for them since they are a flight animal. In their eyes if something happens that they consider a threat, they have no place to escape. It’s like telling you to go into a jail cell and being able to see the other inmates through bars and say “hey at least we get to see each other.” But of course it’s just business
I disagree with the "abuse" part, but I definitely do feel for these upper level horses that are managed so carefully. A horse is, at the end of the day, a horse, and wants to do horse things... like go out and eat with friends outside, not necessarily go win big classes. My horse is more "lawn mower" and maybe 1/8th of the time competitive partner. haha

Shocking that this professional showjumper (of course) does not turn out his horses. A really old-fashioned philosophy of horse-management and chicken before egg argument re: injuries. If he turned out more there would be less injuries.
Too much focus on superficiality and appearance. It is an idyllic set-up but he seems to value pristine cleanliness and order and perhaps not enough on the physical welfare of the horses. Intetesting he needed the small sand arena so horses could "buck and let off steam" ... no wonder if they aren't turned out. Did you note the stabled horses were bandaged - probably to prevent fluid retention that WOULDNT happen if exercising free at turn out. I would love to know his rate of new horses he brings on and how long his top performers stay injury free while in competition (not the field). I would imagine they have plenty of soft injury issues -strains, tendon problems, wind galls and bog spavins etc, as a result of too long cooped up in a loose box (even if it is big) and not exercising free while turned out, once under competitive pressure.

My barn is also near his locality. In the turn of the century there used to be circuses traveling from farm to farm. We, have an "Elephant Walk'"on the edge of our property to accommodate the Elephants. Kinda cool!

It's lovely to see a perfect sized barn like this and have great history behind it. I think after seeing this my image of my dream barn has altered a little bit. Nice to see the way this one has been layed out.
I remember McLain when he was a child. I use to groom at the A rated shows. I remember seeing him with his dad. So nice to see a grown accomplished man, Bravo.

He might be a businessman, but the bottom line is that horses are animals, not assets. They don't care whether you paid $5 or $75,000 for them, they still need to be able to interact with each other without iron bars between them, and be given thee chance to move around in an area big enough for them to run. It's a beautiful prison, but still a prison.
When you care more about the money they can make then the sanity and care of letting a horse be a horse for even an hr

My goodness, a whole lot of criticism here. It's an absolutely beautiful property and something tells me these horses are not being abused. I understand a lot of these comments but I do think they're pretty darn harsh.

I remember seeing McLain Ward competing as a teenager at the Washington International along with his Dad in the mid- to late- 1980's, and then of course watching him compete in latter decades.
It is a magnificent property, something to be proud of. What you shouldn’t be proud of is limiting turnout for your horses. Horses who are limited so much on turnout will naturally have accidents more frequently because when they’re out it’s like getting out of jail and they’ll sing and dance and go crazy. Saying the horses enjoy seeing each other across stalls because they’re social animals is like saying the mental state of human prisoners is ameliorated because they can see each other, as opposed to solitary confinement. Our horses are outside all the time-I would use a shelter for a couple of them in rainy season because they get rain rot easily, but otherwise they’re out there. I don’t understand why they have to look perfect 24/7.

Risk of injury is not a valid reason to not turn out horses, better to take the risk each day and minimise it with safe fencing etc. They have to be outside, free to exercise, graze and socialise with one another.
Turn out doesnt even have to be that long for them to be much healthier and hapier

McLain Ward bought Daisy from my trainer! I remember her when she was at the barn where I board. She was such a sweet girl and really loved the kids during pony camp 🥰
I agree big turnouts with grazing would be a good thing. Two things I like are sable aisles with no gear in them or hanging on stable doors. Also low ceilings, they do keep a barn warmer.
A very beautiful prison camp. The pony, donkey and goat have zero stimulus which is incredibly cruel. Let them, and all of your gorgeous horses out at pasture. Feeling smug about 50 + acres while incarcerating the poor animals is incredibly odd not to mention abusive.

it is a beautiful day and apart from the cows I can't see a single animal out in the field. this is sad.
also the low neon lights in the stable are horrible, they could probably have afforded a better solution with more daylight. also the horses have no gaps in the bars or windows to stick out their heads. to me it feels constricting in there just watching this clip, I want to get out. in contrast to other videos the horses don't come to him when he is standing next to the stable and they look quite sad.

Exactly, all these Nancy Naysayers are grouping all show stables as places which don't turn out horses. Not true. However, these horses are huge investment and worth millions, Mclain is just being smart and protect his horses before they injure themselves. Jeez people, lighten up and stop trashing him.

Amy Houghton that’s tru. I know a barn near me where the horses only get 45 minutes out in a small paddock so it could be worse.
Most of his horses are worked and ridden enough they have lots of exercise.
Katherine Richards that’s not the point. While yes being turned is does help horses get exercise; paddock time/being ridden outside of the arena is so so incredibly important for your horses mental health. Horses typically aren’t happy with a lot of stall time. Yes you can keep them in a stall but I think they should have a LEAST 5-6 hours a day to be out of the barn and alone (not around people) in the field. Happy horses are horses who are allowed to be horses.
I can see why you are proud of such a legacy. Kudos to you for leaving it in such pristine shape. For a couple years in my life I spent a lot of time with donkeys, they are smart and loud thinkers.

My horse gets turned out 24/7 during the summer with many other horses on 10 acres and he's never been injured. That injury risk thing is bullshit. If you value your animals in any way you need to let them be horses for the short time that they have on this planet, not lock them up for your own benefit so you can earn money and medals..

I get that everyones commenting that it's "sad that the horses get no turn out" but 1. They do get turned out it's just limited to prevent injury and 2. these horses are worth MILLIONS of dollars and the risk of an injury is not worth unsupervised turnout 24/7. These horses are clearly taken care of incredibly well.
They won't read your comment. They know more than the actual horse owners too. I wonder how much time the turn out screamers spend outside or near a horse.

SO sad to see horses that have to spend so much time locked in the stalls. It’s like little jail cells. Yes a stall can be a safe place for a horse to go eat rest and get out of bad weather BUT they need free time out in the open to graze and get sunshine and fresh air. Let your horses out more. The hillier the , the more trees in your paddock the lesser injuries your horses will get I’ve only ever stabled my horses when there sick sore or storm but apart from that my horses have never had injuries in the paddock trust me
I knew the minute I clicked the comment section it would be a bunch of comments criticizing him for not turning out the horses 24/7. I think it's smart, Mclain Ward is running a business as much as a way of life these horses are worth upwards of 100k + and compete in high-end circuits with lots of money at stake. I think for that purpose it's smart to monitor and not let the horses out to run and be Insane, unsupervised turnout could result in career-ending injuries for these amazing horses. Also he only showed a little bit of the properity maybe some horses do get more turn out time then others.

Thanks :), I'm no means a expert but a well versed equestrian rider. I think what most people forget is that most likely half these horses are not his but lent to him by sponsers to compete with. If he was to let them out for unsupervised turnout and something were to happen, he would be held liable and his reputation could be ruined. I think more people need to be educated on what it's like to be a high-end rider and an Olympian like Mclain Ward

You all need to all remember this is guys career and how he makes his money. His horses need to be always in tip-top condition. These aren't pleasure horses. Regardless of turnout, these horses are well cared for. I'm sure they are living a great life.

I’m sorry but no one should be hating on how MacLaine Ward takes care of his horses considering how well taken care of they are and how well they perform. Most of these horses are with millions of dollars and it is too risky to have them turned out too often.

@@ratherbwithhorses This particular rider has a chequered history; pins in a horse’s boots, suspended for abuse and of course, his family scandal. His father, Barney Ward, killed 15 horses in a well-documented insurance fraud scheme and in horrible ways - electrocution, smashing legs. McLain was a teenager on the Grand Prix circuit at the time and was aware.
He’s a fine rider, that can’t be denied but the above absolutely makes him questionable, make no mistake!
I’m sure the horses love that their jail cells are painted each year and are slightly larger than usual 🙄 Keeping a horse in a stall causes far more injuries and health issues long term than turnout

Horses have anxiety and need to be out for their physical and emotional health. Too much control is harmful. Lighten up!

I don't see anything wrong with how he explains turnout. He never said he didn't turn them out at all, and they stayed inside 24/7. Managed/guarded turnout I think is how it should always be. Any horse outside should have an eye kept on them at all times in case they get stuck somewhere or caught on something. Plenty of horses start galloping around because they're bored, upset at the bugs, or see their buddy leaving from one field over. It's very common to bring a running horse inside, and it's a difference scenario than one bopping around enjoying themselves. I think Ward is just practicing smart horsemanship.
Imagine being so fucking shut up about turnout that if a horse, that’s kept in a CLOSET all day, dares act like a horse. If all you can think about is them getting injured and ruining your chances of competing, you’re in this sport for ALL the wrong reasons. Shame on this man.
People really need to simmer down about the turnout deal. these are his horses on his farm. untill you spend up to 100,000$ on a horse nobody has the right to even say a word. this is a buisness and in a buisness just like racing, horses need to be supervised. he never said EVER that he does not turn his horses out, he did say that it is managed so someone is watching them. if the horses behave and im sure they would because they would have learned by now not to buck or they get brough inside, they would most likely get 2-3 probably 4 hours of turnout time and thats plenty enough for a horse in a day. We do not know when this was filmed at what time of day so the horses could have easily been outside all morning. These horses are also most likely used to it and that helps also. horses are adaptly creatures and even tho i do not agree with 23/7 stalling with one hour for riding, i do think these horses get amazing proper care that they otherwise would not have recieved if they ended up in a slaughter house. These horses are cared for by top professionals who know these horses since day 1. if the horses were not happy or were stressed they would fix it.
I think the divider here is that many people see horses as sporting equipment and others see them as living beings with rights to a certain kind of 'natural' life.
@@thetralalaco Yes, exactly. It's a clash of world views. Further down in these comments is a woman who is very angry and disgusted at the more amateur folks' reactions, and the angry woman says "I wish people would live up to the real world but you know what they can’t ..." This clearly quite wealthy industry professional lady (who is oddly still only partially coherent in her comment...) is dead certain her view is the "real world." So to her, only the people like her are real.
Similarly, the amateur horse lovers are certain they know about what's real. But none of them understand the extreme financial risk of running a farm like that. This same disconnect can show up in many contexts, where the more amateur types assume they have more in common with the elites than they really do, and the elites are obnoxiously contemptuous and disrespectful of them for that mistaken assumption. At least Ward is allowing a camera in, which is generous, in a way.
Still, me personally, I'm not a major fan of places like these. The large amounts of money tend to come along with personality weirdness in all the main people involved, so that after the first flush of novelty wears off, you end up feeling like you'd rather live in a moldy trailer with someone who wasn't quite so desperately insane.
For many if not most folks living and working on this level, there's a near constant anxiety, a feeling that there's always someone trying to take their stuff (which there may be) or thinking ill of them (there probably is) or a secret that's going to be found out (oh, always) and they're all terrified the money will dry up (and it definitely will, so that's why you get insurance scandals, or lame horses drugged up to sell, or convenience marriages, and inheritance fights, and political bribes for real estate easements, and secretly sold off back pastures, etc etc etc...) And grudges, grudges, grudges til the cows come home (cows which are kept in order to get the tax exmption for being a "working farm" btw) .
They don’t seem to be able to live their life as horses. All a bit too clinical!
What does that mean, if they aren't outside, getting bit by bugs , or running wild they aren't happy. Guess who lives longer?
I guess these people would never consider working these horses in something like pulling logs out of the forest in the winter or something like that?
Yes have the ribbons the top horses the banners but this man is not a proper equestrian who communicates wellbeing wise with his horses they need the turn out they need to run what it is is wrapping them up on cotton wool my horses are turned out often and no there is never a 100 guarantee that they will be safe but this is no life for them :(
