I like your videos. I consider you to be like a true crime grandfather.
Hilarious statement, Mr Brodie, on u thinking of answering the big house, Lonely Hearts Club ad. 😁
Ya that ad was certainly something, 3000 a month is decent money in 2024.
@@oliviawolcott8351Agreed ❤ Great Grands “if not, whatever, happy and healthy is all tht counts” 😊
Great story teller❤
The best and most intriguing, without the Mr. Ballen “even though he’s excellent” up and down speed delivery, exaggeration, and hand 🤚 expressions 😂
I would have expected the Audience you have to be a bit more on the Mature side ... that Sponsor is for Children mate.
"His less than pleasing bone structure" lol
That made me chuckle
I'll say. What an amorphous blob of evil. He could've played the Penguin in a Batman movie.
Best euphemism I've heard in a long time😅
Kinder than saying “fell out of the ugly tree hitting all the branches on the way down”, or “a face that looked like it had been hit by a bag of spanners”.
Looks a little like Curly Howard. Unfortunately, nothing funny about him.
Funny how many criminals "fell down the stairs" in single storey police stations back then
Stoke Newington was a nick with particularly slippery stairs.
police station stairs are notoriously slippery, nearly as slippery as the shower floors. 🤣😅😂
It still happens, we just don't hear about it at all. My step-brother has been in and out of jails and has seen some horrible things from both inmates and guards.
When an ex-boyfriend assaulted me I went to the police station to make a report. They took me to the hospital and I later found out he "slipped" on the stairs when they arrested him.
There is a more recent “she fell down the stairs” storey. Many in America suspect she was pushed or “helped” down the stairs.
It is chilling to think this still goes on today. It's one of the reasons I would never publish a "help wanted" ad or something similar. You never know who might show up. There are probably loads of such "lonely hearts murders" that were never found out. Great story.
So true.
Same mo as the serial killer Bela Kiss.
Yup,the story reminded me of the infamous Craigslist killer,Richard Beasley.
dating apps as well, I'm sure
@@machector892 and Gable Totsie he was on tinder and that poor girl was killed l know he was found innocent but l still think he murdered her
Lots of people "fell down the stairs" right up to the 1980s.
In this case I don't think he fell down the stairs enough times.
Nowadays it's jumping from windows, sad.😔
They still do in many countries around the world … and worse !
@@nurgle11 I totally agree with your observation of this evil man.
And Trump’s first wife died after falling down the stairs
Anytime I hear “subjected to hours of questioning…” I know the police are beating the crap out of someone.
He could have left those children with their family but his sick minded self made sure to tie up loose ends. Those poor children. 😞
Very interesting since I am from Clarksburg, WV, and the chief of police was my wife's grandfather. The dentist who did the forensic work lived across the street from me. My wife's uncle skipped school to watch the trial. Thanks for the interesting stories.
How wild! I’m in Fairmont, Wv - crazy to hear these WV stories, right?
I live in Cross Lanes, and it is very interesting to hear Mr Brody tell West Virginia stories. ❤
@@amberly0317I love the Mysterious WV channel, and I'm from Norway. If it's good, it's good. An Australian content creator (Bella) covered a wild, huge, decades old story from the Oslo area a year or two back. I was shocked. That NEVER happens. It's a bizarre feeling. Cool but a little bit unnerving at the same time.
@@Kari.F.definitely unnerving to think of what happened in your local area!!
@Kari.F. I'm in Saint Albans, Kanawha County West Virginia and know Sean. He lives in SA too. I enjoy his channel as well.
Omg I forgot about the personal classified ads! I used to read them as a kid. I especially loved the missed connections ones. They were always so cheesy, like, "Man seeking blue-eyed beauty seen at K-mart. You wore your auburn hair in a bunch, with a green sweater and a smile capable of erasing all pain. We met eyes, and I noticed no ring on your finger. I would love to know if you felt the spark, too." I often wondered if they found the person again. Some of the particularly well written ones would lead to me imagining them meeting and falling in love. It was good entertainment for the weekends. 😂
Reading the newspaper as a kid and finding those was such a treat 😂
*Pig-Eyed* That is a perfect description of his eyes. LOL
You're insulting the pig.
This is the classiest, most sharply dressed and best storytellers on RUclips!
Pronouncing Beerta and Drenth correct is quite a feat even for a lot of Dutch people, very impressive.
“I’m quite tempted to answer that ad myself”. I love it!!!! Lol!!
Paul what a horrible man preying on lonely women who just wanted love. To think he couldn’t have dropped the children off at an orphanage or somewhere is so damn callus. Thanks for another great story about criminals. You must do a lot of research and I appreciate that diligence!
If he dropped the kids somewhere they could be used as witnesses or they might just outright rat him out.
@@peggedyourdad9560 well that’s true. I was caught up in my emotions
Not a lot of orphanages back then or services for children especially in a small town.
@@karenroot450 Understandable, considering the nature of the situation.
CAREFUL with your projections and predudice of modern values back in time @karenroot450 . "preying" ? "on lonely women" ? shake yourself down, and consider the equal. Those were also seeking to a mutual advantage. They were not lonely at all. They were choosey. Very choosey. They weren't 'preyed' upon, they literally advertised themselves. Else the d**kh**ad* wouldn't have known about them. That talk of yours is dangerous and propagates and instills unecessary upset in others who are not capable of rational thought of their own.
Just as a point of interest, the Movie Night of the Hunter was based on this case. It starred Robert Mitchum and Shelly Winters, and was directed by Charles Laughton. Came out in 1955 and is the only movie Laughton ever directed.
One of the best movies ever made. Mitchum was just chilling.
Great movie!!! A Classic!
Thanks for mentioning this! I don't think I've ever seen it and I will look into it 👍🏼
Ok I've got to go find that movie now!
Such a great movie!
I always hate it when the story gets to the "an unpleasant smell was discovered" part.
Me too, I lived in an old house a while back. Had what turned out to be a dead mouse stuck under the floorboards. The unmistakable pong was awful. Can't begin to imagine the smell from a decomposing human 😮
The smell of something dead in between two floors once made kept us from living there for a week, once. If a small critter can be that bad, I could never imagine what a human decomposing could smell like. Yet there are those stories of people that 'hadn't noticed.'
@@bec9696You've more or less written what I had already put in my comment above 😅
Paul is a good story teller 😊
He's marvelous!
. I totally agree!👌👍🏻❤️
You'd be tempted to answer that ad yourself??!! That made me giggle 😊
This channel is like sitting at the table with your favorite, most fascinating, scholarly uncle. ♡

Looking for this comment, knew someone would. And I would be tempted to head on down to Goodwill and find a pretty dress and answer it myself. Of course the part of never being seen again...... no thanks.
@@jefft8597 what color dress?😂
Yea
Ive answered a few add
All horror stories but non murders to date 😂🎉
Sounded good to me, too. Lol. Of course, we all know if it's too good to be true, it probably is.
It's sad that so many women were so lonely that they trusted anyone they thought would give them love. Men are the same way. Belle Gunness from near where I'm from was the same way; promised men of love and a home and then killed them. What's even sadder is that there are still people who do the same thing in today's world. Everybody wants someone to love them.
14:55 It amazes me that everyone in this photo seems to be smiling like they're a bunch of old acquaintances meeting up to have a good time. I can imagine law enforcement 'being so careless he could fall down the stairs' if the man kept this smile on his face.
What always makes me sad is how killers and other criminals get all the attention while the normal people that fell victim to them are only known in the context of the crime. They don't get videos made or books written about their mundane lives and what they meant to family and friends. They don't get a page on Wikipedia. I get it, I truly do, and I too am of course interested in the monsters rather than the people that resemble me more (thank goodness). It just makes me sad that it has to be this way.
@9:00 after reading his first ad; even back then I'd have been thinking "Too good to be true"
Right?!👍🏼
Loneliness is a hard emotion to cope with
I live 5 minutes down the road from where all this took place. Is it odd that I’m fangirling that you are doing a story close to home, lol.
Wonderful narrator. Your voice, inflections, cadence, pronunciations and soothing calm are impeccable.
Some of those photos are so curiously (almost comically) posed. Especially the one of two people pointing at him accusingly. I wonder how often the press set the scene like this back then.
Those are some of the strangest post-arrest photos I’ve ever seen.
I never heard of this guy, but your description of him was spot-on 😂
“Not exactly a glowing review of anyone’s visage“ had me rolling 😂
I am glad tha😊t you mentioned that he really wasn't from West Virginia. He just lived here. 😁

Hello. I’m from WV, too.

@Me_o_Mel what part? I live in Cross Lanes ❤
@@merrituber1what part? I live in Cross Lanes ❤
“Being from somewhere” doesn’t mean all that much in the US, since most families have only arrived a few generations ago.
18:21 that is the weirdest "trophy pic" ever. He's posing trying to look hard while the bad guy looks up at him all dreamy luke through two black eyes that the "hard man" gave him. What a pic!
Definitely a weird one. Almost looks like a movie still.
Yes it certainly does seem to have an overtone 🤔
Also the hand holding in the arrest photo mmmmmm
Bad guy's eyes are looking up at Johnny Law, and at the camera at the same time.
I don't know maybe the arresting officer was about that life, zoom in on his "belly chain" or whatever that thing is called. After closer examination of that still, he might have been gangster asf.
It's quite scary to find that people can be so gullible and trusting. It still happens today. Call me a cynic but trust should be earned. Thanks Paul, great video as ever.
Great stuff, Paul. I’ve read that Robert Mitchum’s character in “Night of the Hunter” was based on Powers. Fantastic movie.
I've been meaning to see that movie for years.
"Less-than-pleasing bone structure" is a great euphemism. 😂
15:08 the look on his face, “ Woops, you caught me!”
The heart wrenching quote came to my mind while I watched this…. It comes from the great movie “The Green Mile “ ( written by Stephen King)-
“ He killed them for their love, boss!” Which is one of the most despicable motives one could use.
Was picking through episodes I haven't watched yet when this popped up...great timing! And great content, as usual.
Harry Powers certainly seemed to have certain "powers" over women, in spite of Time magazine's most unflattering description of him!
An exceptional video.. what a sad and bizarre case.. 😢 Thanks as always, Paul.. 👍
The younger picture of harry looks very different form 9 to 10 yrs later😮
Thank you, for your presentation, of this sad case. I hope he made his peace with God, and the victims rest in peace.
Wow! That’s exactly what the original Bluebeard wrote in his ads, about the car and spending money!! He must have been reading up on him!! 😂🤣
As we often say in Australia, "Well Blimey, I never" !
We do?
@@mnj640 No, we don't actually. I was trying to start a trend. !
'A less than pleasing bone structure...' I'm not sure why I laughed so much at that!😂
WOW, to think that loneyhearts ads have such a long history 😮 I knew newspapers and serials had a fairly long history (at least as long as Gutenberg's printing press became handy) 🤔 but it never struck me that want ads would have as long a history.
Just goes to prove that even though times, styles, and technology may change -- people are still people.
Robert Mitchum’s character from Night of the Hunter was based on this guy.
Terrifying movie!
A classic film. A must see.
Have never heard of this case. Excellent coverage and comments. "Pig-eyed"....lordy, lordy!
Another intriguing story of evil. The appalling things some people will do for money is beyond comprehension. You are a wonderful storyteller Paul, thank you ❤
"i am quite tempted to answer that myself"
Want ads...or those " hook up" sites....never go to the want ads for love. (Bars aren't so hot either)
I know a young man, personally, a police officer who met his 'true love' on Christian mingle or some site. They married and she bled him dry, financially, before he finally divorced her. What's sad is he swears he will never marry again.

Modern-day Craigslist, I suppose. People have been killed through it. I can't imagine writing to someone and thinking he's the one! He's perfect (after 2 letters) and then giving him my money, or allowing him to come into my home. These women married the man. He wasn't in their lives for more than a few weeks. I don't care what people say; if you can't truly vet someone, you have no business trusting them.
“He fell down the stairs”🤣🤣🤣
😂 "I want a wife, brainy, beautiful and rich. Student" Compared to the add above "would like the hearthstome of her heart swept and the cobwebs brushed away"
Didn't Luella think her husband's construction project for a vegetable store was rather odd ( and expensive) ? Hard to believe she wouldn't have had a rummage through his trunk full of love letters that he kept at their home when he was off on " business".
Makes me wonder if it was a joint money making enterprise similar to the Lonely Hearts killers, Beck or Hernandez? Or the Brides in the Bath murderer's wife who wasn't directly involved in the entrapment and murders but received and sold on the victims' possessions.
Thank you so much for sharing your video. I enjoyed it very much.
As usual a great story 😊thanks
What pisses me off is how can Bundy, Manson and men like this get women to throw themselves at them, but single men like me can't get one to look at me twice.
Thanks Paul, for another great story.

Who knew true crime could be so relaxing? You are a gifted storyteller.
"His less than pleasing bone structure was the least of their worries."

The Lonely Hearts murders is a really good film I think-
The pictures of the victims and children speak of a life of strain and sorrow.
17:37 Aah! The Good ol’ days when common sense prevailed and perps were clumsy as Hell.
Just came from a recommended video about the Gibbet. What a great and well made video. News subber! Amazing quality and gripping video. I'm hooked
18:23 That’s one friggin weird a$$ photo. Harry Powers laying curled up on his side, looking up at the detective. The detective sitting there with a cigarette in one hand and other on his thigh, with one foot propped up on Harry’s bed, looking off into space, like ‘😏Yeah that’s right, I’m hitting that’.
😂
Hi Paul, I have never heard of this one before. I wonder what happened to his real wife after the trial and execution? She was a victim too. That trunk full of letters disturbs me the most. So many women who came too close to a killer. I hope they were notified that they were writing to a murderer.
Even today, it’s hard to meet people who are not running a scam, abusive, criminal or worse. Dating sites are the very worst! I even get a message from a stranger on RUclips from time to time. I’m happily married but telling them that doesn’t deter them. I’m thinking about removing my picture from my profile.
Thanks for sharing this with me and I appreciate you very much. ❤ Brenda
That’s why I use a picture of my cat for my profile and not my real name, since it’s a unique combination.
Yes remove your picture, a friend would often get a “let’s be friends “ message but when she replaced her picture with a old house, the messages stopped 😅😅
