Stu Block is phenomenal in his own right and we are sitting here debating who is better at this certain range or that certain range? Do you not see a problem here? Nobody doubts the greatness of both men, I think it is just hard for some people to let go of the past and move on with life! We should appreciate the fact that we still have great music like iced earth that we love at this time in the world and not take it for granted.

Barlow pushes his voice to the limit in this song. He stretches his highs as far as they go and it sounds great cause you can tell he's pushing himself. Ripper sings it cleaner but his voice is naturally higher so that is expected. Stu has great highs too. He has that evil witch sounding, death metal high. Barlow wins only by default cause it's his song. But all three sound great and unique in their own way.

Barlow's transition from low to high in the intro is just about the coolest thing ever and Stu doesn't quite capture that, but his deep voice sounds amazing in the beginning and he handles the rapid-fire transitions well, in my opinion. The "for true love I shall avenge..."-part is a bit weird here, but all in all, Stu is a heckuva vocalist.
I really love Matt Barlow era of Iced Earth big time, but Stu Block also has an amazing voice. I love the three studio albums he has done especially Dystopia and Incorruptible. I really love the live album/DVD Live In Ancient Kourion big time. I love listening to Live In Ancient Kourion as much as I do listening to Alive In Athens. Some of the songs on Live In Ancient Kourion that I really love are Melancholy, Ten Thousand Strong, Dark City, I Died For You, Damien, Dante's Inferno, and this one Dracula. This might be blasphemy for most Iced Earth fans, but I don't want Matt Barlow back in Iced Earth. He was in the band two times and left on his own both times. Matt will always be the classic singer for Iced Earth, but Stu Block is what Iced Earth needs. Stu Block has been giving everything he has got since he joined. If Jon Schaffer fired Stu Block like he did Tim Owens just to get Matt Barlow back for a third time, I would be pissed off.
Ripper nailed this one too. I saw them with Ripper on vocals, and in Chicago they gave him a heavy metal version of a standing ovation for this one and Iced Earth gets "U.S.A." chants when they played When The Eagle Cries.
This song was written for Barlow...one of the best and most underrated metal singers of all time..a pretty hard song to sing ( and play). And both Tim and Stu did a great job singing it...respect. Love it.
I watched a candid in the crowd cell phone video of Stu singing Plagues of Babylon live, and it convinced me this is NOT re-recorded, Stu is able to hit high notes like this,it's amazing

I want to add something to all the hate Stu gets, by die-hard Barlow fans. I went around and played this live version and a live version with matt to quite a few of my friends without telling them anything else. Then I asked them, which vocal performs they prefered technically and emotionally. And surprisingly Stu Block won over Matt Barlow! Why? Most of them pointed out, that Barlow forces out the tones, while it sounds like it‘s really easy for Stu. Moral of the story: don‘t call a „cover“ bad, just because it‘s not the original singer!

Maybe it's time for the main song writer to loosen up the reigns a little and let some outside influence weave its way into the Iced Earth sound, after all they used to have a second main songwriter in original guitarist Randy Shawver who's writing was a big part of the way the first three albums sound and those are still Iced Earth's best to this day. Now granted Schaffer managed to do well as the only main creative force at first (Dark Saga and Something Wicked this Way Comes both manage to be very good despite the sudden simplification in musical structure) eventually he started steadily running out of good ideas (Horror Show = half awesome/half filler, Glorious Bullshit = boring plodding mess completely devoid of testicles, Framing Armageddon = one of the only two albums since Horror Show that actually has some creative value, Crucible of Man = solid opening portion but after A Gift or a Curse ends this one turns rather dull real quick, Dystopia = solid and fun release albeit somewhat generic sounding. And then we have Plagues of Babylon which basically marks the end of Glorious Bullshits reign as Iced Earth's worst album. Yes indeed Jon Schaffer is what makes Iced Earth Iced Earth and without him the band would seize to exist but honestly Schaffer's baby has been a mere shell of it's former self for the last several years now anyway so it's not like we'd be missing much and also considering the singers seem to be one of the very few aspects of this band still worth listening to I'd say at this point they might as well be the ones making this band.

Block kills it here, and I mean that in a good way. His clean normal singing is less melodramatic than Matts, and his Falsetto sounds more less forced. . But Matt's the man.
Stu is an awesome vocalist. Black, death, power or simply just heavy metal. The sickener is, jon has him singing like a clone of matt... why? Let him loose you eejit! He is 1000 times the singer you have him mimic. In fact , I listened to ashes of ares. Poor man's ices earth at best.
Stu has the most amazing vocal contro I have seen outside of someone like Floor Jansen from Nightwish. He honestly does this songs a better service than Ripper or Barlow ever did live. And I love Matt to death. He wrote those killer vocal lines. But he just couldn't really pull them off with this much control and finesse live ever
I as much I love Iced Earth and I totally agree that after Barlow quit, Stu was a perfect replacement, but....this was just one of those songs that just wasn't meant for Stu. Not saying this version sucked, but it just doesn't feel right.

Yes indeed Jon Schaffer is what makes Iced Earth Iced Earth and without him the band would seize to exist but honestly Schaffer's baby has been a mere shell of it's former self for the last several years now anyway so it's not like we'd be missing much and also considering the singers seem to be one of the very few aspects of this band still worth listening to I'd say at this point they might as well be the ones making this band.

Great metal Singer Stu Block
Block kills it here, and I mean that in a good way. His clean normal singing is less melodramatic than Matts, and his Falsetto sounds more less forced. .
But Matt's the man.
Stu is an awesome vocalist. Black, death, power or simply just heavy metal. The sickener is, jon has him singing like a clone of matt... why? Let him loose you eejit! He is 1000 times the singer you have him mimic. In fact , I listened to ashes of ares. Poor man's ices earth at best.

Stu has the most amazing vocal contro I have seen outside of someone like Floor Jansen from Nightwish. He honestly does this songs a better service than Ripper or Barlow ever did live. And I love Matt to death. He wrote those killer vocal lines. But he just couldn't really pull them off with this much control and finesse live ever
I as much I love Iced Earth and I totally agree that after Barlow quit, Stu was a perfect replacement, but....this was just one of those songs that just wasn't meant for Stu. Not saying this version sucked, but it just doesn't feel right.

yea those highs are pretty weak... although I think he emulates Barlow quite well on the last record.. I haven't heard the 2014 record yet..

@@Skullpainting there is a huge difference in tone between his lower notes and the highs. It needs to sound like one voice, masculine.

i'd say stu's higher range is more on terms with king diamond must have been influenced by him as he's got quite dark voice in certain bits
