@@madelinet.5983 Thats actually pretty rude of you because Stu is Second place. Hes almost as good as Barlow was especially on songs he wrote. Iced Earth has had 5 singers over the years, and there are only 2 that ive complimented endlessly. The only Matt Barlow, and Stu Block too. They were both excellent.
I'll never forget hearing Iced Earth for the first time. The song was Slave to the Dark, and I didn't like it, specifically due to the vocals and how they sounded like opera. Sometime later, a friend accidentally left Alive in Athens Disc 1 at my house. Fast forward a year and Matt Barlow is my favorite vocalist. He remains in my top 3 today, 20 years later.
What a singer!! WHAT A F*CKING SINGER!!! Amazing voice: strength, emotions, technique and drive! Can't believe they made this great song turn even better live than it was already on the album! (Or at least as good which is already hard to do)
And what to say about Schaffer? The dude is probably the very best metal rhythm guitarist ever. That right hand simply screams perfection! The guy´s a Monster when it comes to rhythms! He is a Monster metal player! \m/
I still prefer Schaffer´s dynamics and right hand technique. He plays rhythms in a more "organic" way. With not much distortion to it - considering the metal band he is in and the sounds he achieves. The heaviness comes from his attack. I believe he has got more diversity in his right hand. The dude can play tight stuff , with an unmistakable attack like no other. Love his playing! Preferences. Marcus Siepen can also play great. I just prefer Jon´s approach and rhythm tightness.
Barlow nails it completely, Jon is a war machine galloping the song in rhythm, the instrumental part is a killer... But I'm surprised I saw nobody commenting about Brent Smedley powdering those freaking drums into fckn metal symphony, he blasts the song into another level. This one and Travel in Stygian from Alive in Athens are their best live performances, just peaking perfection.
I think Matt is underappreciated even in the Metal community. He's so god damn good; there's a character to his voice that is unlike any other I can think of. He's like if you gave a lot more range to Peter Steele. He's able to hit the high notes without losing the power of his voice and he doesn't have to growl or get guttural when he goes low (especially in studio).
His voice is like thunder. . . .hits hard on the lows and highs. He has been my favorite vocalist for years. Most re entry the dude from Powerwolf is there for me too
Matt isnt unappreicated at all, Especially among fans of this band. Everyone says he was the best IE singer. The guy who was probably most unapprieciated would have to be Stu Block. The dude was amazing but constantly had to hear all of the comparisons to Matt or Tim Owens. But hes actually a good combination of both of their voices and is also the best on Iced Earth songs or albums that he wrote like Black Flag. On those nobody can really compare him to the other two because he was his own.
To me Barlow is the most underrated metal singer ever. Able to growl, sing and scream, not everybody can fuckin do that on his level. Matt Fuckin Barlow!
And now they got Stu Block and I heard the 2013 live version of it ruclips.net/video/-9ScQ7SNeJg/видео.html To say I'm disappointed is an understatement. In addition the bad solo at 3:20 with even the missing background choir. And at 8th minute he apparently does better shut up lol.. Stu is ok on the current albums, but Dante's Inferno was a big disappointment to me. And honestly I like the older albums much much more. Because of much more unique songs.
S W Great singer. But he has no stage persona. Talks very bluntly, almost doesn't look at the audience, barely walks around... His voice does all the job though. At least he moves more than Ripper Owens who stays like a statue all song long.
i'm so thankful I got to see Iced Earth live on Barlow's last tour. No other vocalist has been as good as him, before or since. Easily one of the best metal vocalists alive.
I saw I.E. in '08 & '10 w/this lineup, & had VIP tix, so my now ex gf & I met them both times! They are very cool to their fans, I have to say! Just all so cool & nice!
He is a real singer! its a difficult song to play in live but his plays this song and seems its easily, great job for this guy! and their band! Iced the best!
I remember years back going to a Megadeth concert in Rockford IL, when I was in high school, and Iced Earth opened for them. I'd never heard of them at the time, and was completely blown away by them. I honestly wouldn't have cared if they kept playing instead of Megadeth. However, that was one of the best Megadeth concerts I have ever seen also. lol GREAT FUCKING BAND!!
To the lord vampire, to the pagan master, to Saruman the great magician, to the great Carlomagne conceptual master Metal tracks, to such talented roles and deep voice, your echoes will last forever, rest in pieace Lord Christopher Lee, your blood will be eternal!
FUCK !! This is FUCKING AWESOME... this song live... when you ear a song done in a live show that gives to you more than the album version... you know what it mean... THIS BAND IS GREAT !!
When I first saw Iced Earth play this track live in 2002 I thought how is Matthew gonna pull the extended screams . Well he focused in poised himself and nailed it . I knew it would get easier for him over the years . Talk about being proved right .
Hmm,very underrated band in terms of quality of studio songs and extremly real live performances,i mean Matt Barlow is probably, well for me surely best Metal vocalist of all times,my respects to Dio hes basically a god,but Barlow's voice is just something else, such originality and power and technique i'm left speachless. Awesome band!
1. Bruce Dickinson 2. Michael Kiske 3. DC Cooper 4. Geoff Tate 5. Ronnie James Dio 6. Matt Barlow 7. Rob Halford 8. King Diamond 9. Joey Tempest 10. Don Dokken :)
Dracula is one of Iced Earth's most Gothic songs, it is a killer track live. I heard Ripper sing this one when they played at The Metro in 2004. Ripper nailed Dracula. This is the first track I heard from Iced Earth then I heard The Something Wicked Trilogy and Dante's Inferno. This is a shorter track by Iced Earth but it is an epic track in its short nature.
That range is just insane. In my opinion Barlow is the best male singer in the history of male singers. For those interest in my female pick, i'd say Floor Jansen :).
Man this is truly sheer power, fucking Matt... Simply amazing, this song is hard as fuck to sing and he fucking nailed. What a great album Horror Show is.
This song and this gig defines the Jon Schaffer to my top 5 guitarists of all time. Huge stage charisma even if he standing still. His riffs explodes with such ferocity, that most metal guitarists can only dream of. Fantastic performance from this band.
Who is listening in 2024?
Opa presente Brasil !
Good songs are timeless
Cirão ladrão metaleiro KKKKKKKKK
I’m gonna come back to like your comment tomorrow, so that we can both listen to that song again tomorrow 🤘🏻
All the cool people😊

Stu Block posted a pic of the band and I commented "where is Matt Barlow" and he got so butt blasted he told me to come to a show and fight him lmao

clearly you haven't heard Dantes Inferno, the wicked trilogy (Prophecy - Birth Of The Wiked - The Coming Curse), Melancholy and many others.

i friggin love matt barlow man he's an amazing vocalist
And Jon really killed those backing vocals on the chorus!
I wish I could sing as good as Matt, he's absolutely incredible in my opinion. He's one of the greatest we've ever had in metal.

Very difficult song to sing live...He is amazing
this song reminds me of Painkiller by Judas priest!

whaaaat!!!!!!!!!!

Byron Cimino he means in terms of high notes through most of the song
One of the harder Metal songs to sing, I imagine

Mustaine kicksass! Badass player also!
He also does well on lead guitar. But he prefers being a rhythm, because this is what makes the song what it is. Not the guitar solos.
Not to mention one of metals greatest song writers.
