In the US, we only had CBS's coverage with the heavy John Tesh influence. It's cool to see another angle. It's also interesting to reflect back on 7-Eleven's influence on this Tour. They were the only allies that Greg had aside from Bauer, Lammerts, Kathy, and a few others. Halcyon days, for sure.
It was unbelievable! What a day and what a Tour it was. Greg would go on to beat the best including Laurent Fignon in another dramatic win at the World Championships.
I remember Liggett telling the anecdote afterwards, whereby his producer said in his ear as it happened, "next time, get it bloody right!". Get what right? The fact Liggett predicted the final winning margin for Lemond as 5 or 6 seconds, not 8!

That was the most magnificent display of professional cycling I’ve ever had the privilege of witnessing; even today, some 40 years after I first saw it. But what really impresses me the most about Greg Lemond though, is his integrity in standing up to that POS, Lance Armstrong and his relentless campaign of bullying before he was eventually exposed as the disgrace that he is.
Just legendary. This is what got my hooked on bike racing. To this day, I still feel for Fignon
Listening to Greg LeMond in interviews before and after his ITT stage win, I am super impressed with what a class act Greg was on and off the bike!
Absolutely brilliant, I was the British Army 25 mile Champion that day!!! I'll always remember this till the day I die. I'm 55 now,
Those old and beautiful background music....
Brings back all the wonderful memories from the good old days...
Do you know what the background music is ? ive been looking all these years
Best day in cycling history!
AB SO LUTELY!!!!!!!!!!!!! Like the USA being Russia in 1980 Hockey, just incredible
In sports history what Greg accomplish was super human
Lemond the Best
7:57 he made the finish eventually
8:18 👄 woah !

Thank you so much for this post. Influenced me to start riding and haven't stopped since. The TT is still my favorite type of discipline.
the race of truth
Greg Lemmon forever and ever since Ipiales Nariño Colombia América Latina 😅😅😅😅😅🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Used to live in Luxembourg. That opening shot brought back memories!
Can remember watching it live. . .Fignon just had to `ride in` . . .Just was,nt his day. .RIP
17:35 Greg turning a 55x12 like it’s a walk in the park
BEST TDF EVER!
The coverage is much better than now. The tour is utterly boring these days in comparison. The last epo free tour, plus no radios.
Still sends shivers....
Loved those 80s montages. So good
Greg Lemmon forever and ever since Ipiales Nariño Colombia América Latina 🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤
Miss you, Laurent

I was in my local bike shop watching this final stage.
how old are u back then?
@@achmadfadel5650 just 17 and still fit, those days passed me up lol
Greg is the reason that at 68 I am inspired to get get up and ride everyday.
Still gives me chills.

He said Fignon won the tour in 1985.
Hinualt won in 1985
The only other sporting event that. had me on the edge of my seat was the tie break game between the Yankees and the Red Sox and this.
Cycling is the sport of kings
While Greg did the fastest TT in tour history that day, Fignon did the second fastest. Great battle
Thierry Marie was the second-fastest. 25s faster than Fignon.

Wow. Just wow
I was so freaking nervous watching this in 89!!!!!
I remember Liggett telling the anecdote afterwards, whereby his producer said in his ear as it happened, "next time, get it bloody right!". Get what right? The fact Liggett predicted the final winning margin for Lemond as 5 or 6 seconds, not 8!
lemond was already 52 seconds ahead at the last turn on the champs elysees.
wondering IF fignon would have had just ONE aero wheel instead of two...he might have won??
Lemond forever
8 seconds is mind blowing but to see it on TV… 120 metres? 3,285 km and it’s decided by 120 metres?
Fignon wore a ponytail. An aero helmet would’ve saved him 8 seconds
no

Well in 2024 tdf will have a last stage time trial
LeMond. Along with Cadel Evans, the last of the genuine winners of the TDF . Drugs have killed the sport. RIP Paul Sherwen
yeah, not sure that's true
Lemond was nowhere near tested as much as modern day riders …. Only from the early 2010 s were the winners thoroughly drug tested
I thought i was watching top gun then some down under chap started talking... -U10

I got suckered in a HS track race
I thought I had the race won so I didn’t race through the finish
I lost
This is why you NEVER give up
Great stuff but wow the cheesy music 0_o
That’s Top Gun, fool.
The original channel 4 theme was written for this show only. The one they used for the montages. Brilliant piece of music
Lemond was like a bullet
Fignon was like a parachute
EPO is amazing
You are looking for the 1999 Tour de France.
Something Lemond knows nothing about or gains from it

Unfortunately anyone before the early 2010s is tainted when drug testing became so thorough , fignon was drugged up to the eyeballs lemond probably to
