I get the feeling Sam Regiel is perpetually one "good bit" away from accidentally becoming a cult leader. Nobody has more commitment to a bit than Sam lol
For sure
Sam ends up as the real life Traveler
Somebody, I think it was Matt said that if Sam didn't have D&D as an outlet he would probably become a super villain and thats been all I think of anytime he does shit like this.
Matt's expression as he realised flat Exandrians have to exist now lmao
Even worse, Matt now having to decide if Exandria actually is flat with a whole other world on the opposite side and him having to build lore for THEM too!
@@Barrlounge Exandria is spherical like every other planet in Matt's world, he specified that already.
This does still leave the potential for a hollow Exandria theory though.
@@castor9683 I mean, the Underdark *does* exist in Exandria, so it's _somewhat_ hollow.
@@TheGoldenJay637 I mean caves exist on Earth, so Earth is also somewhat hollow.
@@a-walpatches6460 We're talking about the hollow earth theory though, and the underdark fits the bill, regular earth caves don't
I take my hat off as a sign of mourning for the flat earthers who like that FCG is a flat earther but don't realise his Intelligence is 8.
except that he isnt.
He's a flat exandrianist, not a flat earther.
Flat Earth society straight up identifying with the stupidest character on the party.
It's fine, they didn't roll high on INT either.
Which is canonically the intelligence of giant eagles who can fly over Exandria and see its a d12. You flat and round people are both off, maybe you should study your Grogian geometry.
“What do you think happens to the water?”
This moment, right here, is where the desperation kicked in full force
what happens? well, nothing happens
Obviously either the gravity would hold it to this plane ala spell jammer, or it falls off the side infinitely ala decanter of endless water, or there is another side (imagine if there isnt another side? How would that work, one side with an edge, but no thickness?) The water could wrap around - but then the world would be effectively round(ish).
@@michaeldayman682 I'm telling you it's the UnderDark! It has a giant hole in the center so that water flows towards the center. That when it falls through it starts out again in the mountains on the Material Plane!
@@patrickjordan2868 madness. What lies under the underdark? If an under there do be then flat the world is not ... unless - cubed perhaps?
@@michaeldayman682 If I remember my cosmology correctly below the Underdark is Double Hell, but it's been a while
I wonder if Liam's "personal views" comment is what prompted the Flat Earth Society to reach out to him LMAO
Y'know that makes a lotta sense. I wouldn't be surprised that they couldn't read that joking, too. XD
I think they're just desperate for any representation.
@@sandpiperr Preposterous, it's a well respected society with members around the globe
@@JB-xl2jc I see what you did there.
I still sincerely think that "Flat Earth Society" is just a shitpost that went to far, and the leaders are trying to see how far they can actually take it.
The most important takeaway from this is that they accept fictional members.
Anything to increase their "numbers"
It's beautiful watching Laura flail around for an argument he can't easily refute and how he swats it away with ease
No, it was the other way around.
@@sandpiperr not it wasn't, that is the point of an strawman argument, it doesn't matter how much Laura tried, he would easily dismiss any argument she came with with justifications that sound good enough for him and are equally hard to refute.
@@danilooliveira6580 he's too good at acting like a fucking retarded idiot, the absolute wrinkled brain this man has, my god if he wanted to take over earth he could
No, if you look, she's slowly moving him towards "so it's got people on both sides. And it's got people on the edge. What if the edge is curved..."
@@deworde Let's be real here, Sam obviously isn't a flat earther and he makes that* clear on the podcast segment, he isnt going to have FCG make the flat exandria argument, and then immediately backpedal because Imogen presented a slightly more convincing argument to him.
To be clear, flat earthers are fucking idiots and I don't support it, but it is a hilarious bit from Sam for CR lol.
I played a deep gnome character who believed that the world was just a series of caves and caverns. The "surface" was just the name of a very large cavern, and it had a moving portal to the plane of fire in the ceiling. The stars were just light reflected from the entrances of tunnels leading to other caverns on the ceiling of the "surface" cavern.
Anything else was just too unlikely and ridiculous sounding.
thanks for my new NPC LOL
I... Okay I'm stealing this!
You've made Plato's Cave the character.
How long you reckon until this gets posted into 4Chan and from that to the point when it's another world wide conspiracy theory, just like "qanon" and "birds don't exist"?
The Flat Earth Society finally gave us the line Sam won't cross for a gag: the literal but nonexistent Edge of the World.
Also, seeing Matt quietly die inside at shenanigans is always a delight.
...Also also, one of my favorite fantasy settings of all time is in fact a flat world. Discworld is carried by four titanic cosmic elephants, who are in turn carried by an even larger cosmic turtle that swims through the universe.
whenever the flat earth comes up I always say that and it gets people really riled up.
Is this a stephen king reference?
@@Anon-qp3kt ye
If the world is flat, please let it be on the back of great Ah-Tuin
@@Anon-qp3kt Discworld by Terry Pratchett, it's simply superb. Best comic fantasy book series ever made.
Fcg full-heartedly believes that sharks are smooth
He’s right too
they are smooth from both sides
Just look at them, they have to be smooth
I've touched a shark before. It's smooth one way, and like little spikes the other.
@@TheBlarggle Please stop spreading lies, they are smooth on both directions, everyone knows that
0:30 that sigh isn’t just imogen, it’s laura deciding how far she wants to engage with sam’s bit LMAO
“You know how no matter how far we go, the edge never seems to be getting closer?”
“Must be very far”
“Mhm”
Poor Matt, He puts weeks and months and maybe even years into making this world only for Sam to absolutely shit all over it🤣
😆😆😆
actually, did he ever confirm Exandria is a globe ?
Yes. Repeatedly expressly thanks to Sam’s jokes. XD
If FCG pulled out a LEGITIMATE membership to the Flat Earth Society in-game it would be the most incredible crumbling of the fourth wall I will ever witness. I 100% support whatever reply Sam gives but I secretly hope that the Flat Earth Society gains an ancient sentient automaton very soon.
I hope Sam tells them to F themselves!
"Smiley day. While I believe for certain that Exandria is flat, I have viewed your "earth". I'm sorry to say this, but unlike my world of Exandria, yours is not flat. Best regards, FCG."
Uhm … that would be *imaginary* ancient sentient automaton
Imaginary ancient sentient automaton, *with an intelligence of 8*
…….isn’t the other side just the feywilds?
"...even though it's a good bit!" describes Sam's personality succinctly.
If Sam pulled out a legit Flat Earther membership card with FCG's name on it i think Matt would have stormed off set and walked into the ocean
walked off the side of the ocean**
And on to the other side! @@ditto-w
Matt's face to FCG undermining his creation is just pure bliss
I love how Laura immediately knew what Sam's up to, and probed him further. Amazing team players these guys in RPing.
I think it physically pained her a little. lol
I could watch a full three hour session of Imogen questioning FCG on flat earth “theories”.
"Mmhmm, yeah, we'll figure- we'll talk to a scientist" has such a disappointed mother vibe its unreal.
Matt: I have created a fantasy world where the only problems are the ones relevant to the plot.
Sam: brings flat earthers into this world.
Matt: forgive me, Lord, for I must sin.
Also known as Matt Mercer despairing over Sam making Flat Earthers canon in his world.
If FCG was created on a sky city, his world would be flat
HOLY LORE IMPLICATIONS
That's not how perspective works though. The higher you go up the more you can see the surface curve.
I'm not saying the world below would be flat but that the world he can explore would be i.e. the floating Island@@carlotta4th
It would be hilarious if the "under side" ... is THE FEY WILDS!
i mean if anything it'd be a cool lore to the underdark. especially with mushrooms and spiders being able to live on ceilings irl, it'd make for an interesting world
The captions on these videos are hilariously detailed I love it.
I like the idea of the other side of the flat exandria just being a huge plane of water, you'd probably see U'katoa.
And that is how we get Spelljammer incorporated into Matt's world, a whole potential campaign just to cancel out Sam's bit
I know a person that actually believes in flat Earth. I don't even argue, I just sit and nod, while desperately wanting to get out of the conversation.
You can't walk far
I suspect that the individuals that restarted the flat earth society did so for a laugh.
Then the bit snowballed as they and their friends riffed on it. Like slenderman.
Though them reaching out to FCG, offering membership even knowing the player doesnt believe, really makes me think the current managers are in on the joke.
@@michaeldayman682 you say "restarted" ... you realise that flat earth theory is a NEW thing right ? it came up in the middle of the 20th century when every village idiot was able to contact other village idiots xD
people in the middle age new it was round, the christian curch while burning witches knew it was round, the old greeks knew it was round people 300bc knew it was round xD everyone knew cause a child with a stick and a string can prove it so you needed modern time idiocracy to make this stuff believable xD
@@DaxRaider I'm sure there were isolated little cabals with their secret truths believing the world was flat, balanced on the back of a turtle going back hundreds and thousands of years.
It wouldnt be widely accepted then, it's not widely accepted now, just the internet brings it to our attention more.
@@DaxRaider history teachers have loved telling about the european flat earthers for decades at least - Christopher C history especially.
Watching the light leave Matts' eyes, as he continues to realize that these are, in fact, his best friends is, perhaps, my favorite thing in the world.
0:48 this frame is PERFECT
the main difference between FCG and flatearthers being Letters is willing to talk to a scientist about it
we found the line he shant cross for du bit
First Nott, now FCG. I love this bit so much.
I feel Sam's conflict here at the end. like yes, it'll be funny if FCG got a flat earth membership card, but then again, I wouldn't want to have a Flat Earth membership card in my possession either. like it's weird to receive it for your character that you play in dnd
0:29
That sigh says it all
Now I want FCG in one episode just take out flat earth society membership card and be like "look I found more sciency persons who say exandria is flat"
And have him do it at a f*cking Phlo-port 🤣
FCG is a _Flat Exandrist_ not a _Flat Earther._ Pretty sure FCG thinks _Earth_ is fictional, but definitely a globe in canon.
the look on Matt's face at 1:12 will never not be funny to me. Poor Matt :P
It would be hilarious though to get FCG a membership card from them.
Laura trying her HARDEST not to murder FCG/Sam 😂😂. Like this one was so funny
I just want an episode where FCG meets the people that worship Vokodo.
"Maybe we should find one...for you..." So good
FCG absolutely should have his own Flat Exandria Society card. If I were Sam I'd photoshop that up.
I like how they keep Laura and Matt are the only ones trying to dissuade sam from this god send of a joke that just gets funnier and funnier the more they keep trying.
I live for Matts Reactions to Sams Bullshit
I finally understand sams cheeks, hes been slapped so much they are so plump.
In some way, I find FCG's naivety quite touching. So old, doesn't really know who they are, and it reflects on their own concept of the world and its shape. Not aggressive about their point of view either and open to discussion on what he doesn't know yet.
There's another portion somewhere where Sam explains the day/night cycles through all of their travels, including those up north, as proof of a flat Exandria.
That would have been a GREAT bit
First RTA now flat Exandria. Poor Matt.
Always suspected flat earthers were just trolling people and nobody gets the joke. This strengthens that view. Fcg should definitely become a member.
I just WISH someone would have taken two pencils, a piece of paper, and their phone's flashlight and recreated the Eratosthenes experiment on air just to disprove FCG right there.
I 100% would have done it.
Which character in the party has a phone though
1:11 is the face I made throughout all of 2020.
HE IS FROM A FLOATING ISLAND
To be fair, my favorite fantasy setting is a flat world... carried atop the backs of 4 giant elephants who stand upon the shell of a giant space turtle.
The Turtle Moves...
An important question though: is the turtle male or female?
@@nirobu an important space mission to discover Great A'Tuin's gender failed due to an incompetent wizard, a tourist, and a chest with hundreds of little legs and a baaaaad temper.
The struggles of Sam: it's a good bit... But should i?
If it’s not “recognize the alpha”. Chetney getting on Matt’s nerves, then flat earther FCG is the one to take up the mantle
we finally found the limit to Sam's bits
Well now I guess we know where Sam's line is with his bits. It took literally the Flat Earth Society getting involved to find it
Between this and RTA, I think they might just be trying to break Matt completely.
They must find Veil DeMoss Dyson to help them out
I know he's doing it as a bit but for an automaton I think believing that the world is flat and is exactly how it is today as when it was first created makes sense. What you see is what you get Like with him. He's a robot that's remained unchanged for hundreds years. His thought process is that anything that isn't flesh remains the same. And how would you know the world isn't flat unless someone told you and show'd you definitive proof?
Not saying he's right just that its very good roleplaying.
"Its ok" 😅😅 gotta love organized insanity.
As they were spinning this bit i was imagining the atory line where they jave to face off with a goatee wearing fcg who arrives from the underside world
With great power comes great responsibility
i love that sam struggles with this because on one hand he doesnt want to add fuel to the flat earth machine, but on the other hand, it would be funny to do it.
I forgot Matt stared into the camera for a solid 10 secs 🤣🤣🤣
Also Sam is the living embodiment of that interview meme:
Interviewer: "So what would you say is your biggest weakness?"
Sam: "I'm gonna have to go with I commit to hard to a bit."🤣🤣🤣
Nyaa I had a world setting where each "plane" of existence was held on the back of dreaming Empyrean, stuck in a never ending march towards a huge all consuming entropy demon.
Each step would move the planes closer to the end and push forward the seasons.
The entire plot being one of the first races had created a weapon to destroy the titans behind them to prevent time from moving forward and allowing them time to find away from certain death. Only for new Empyreans to appear and continue the literal cycle towards them.
I wish I had got a chance to finish that campaign of flat earthers!
FCG....Flat Circular Gaia.
Forget a scientist, have FCG plug into a mainframe that shows hard data that planet is round. If that doesn't work, then pop his top and find which wires are crisscrossed.
I think Exandria is actually shaped like a d20
Given the new system their making, would it be retconned to be a d12?
imagine if FCG pulls out a fucking flat earth membership card one episode.
I know flat earthers are a real thing, depressingly, but honestly it sounds like most people are just freaking out about something where over 90% are trolling. Like Sam's bit. A card for FCG would be hilarious
Flat-Earthers must love Pratchett's Discworld
For them it's the only non-fiction geography book.
It's a good bit
All arms for the bit!!
Definitely reply and definitely say yes.
I hope one day they visit the underdark so fresh cut grass can look at it as the bottom of the disc they call Exandria
It really is a good bit though.
FCG: Flat Earth.....where the hell is Earth, is thats what's on the otherside?
Puts R.T.A into perspective :D
It would have been so much more amazing if Sam had been like "O, I dont think earth is flat. I just know exandria is."... And not FCG, but SAM thinks that just t8 troll Matt
Sam draws the line at flat earth
Not the schindler bit
Not various disgusting things I'm his mouth
Drug and alcohol dependency for some.comedic value (but he does of course later show us the dangerous side and results)
Nah, flat earth is sherd he's out
Chaotic neutral in action
Oh god, Matt needs to have a phlogiston ship take them to the moon to get back at FCG 🤣
I loveeee how innocent fcg is here.. like hw legitimately believes exandria is flat and its like imogen mothering him and explaining santa aint real
Our heroes, the flat earthers
I
Love
Sam
So
Freaking much!!!
If any world was truly flat, cats would be knocking shit off the edge all the time.
I love Sam so much
Holy shit the ending looooooooool
my view distance doesnt render that far
okay but like now here is my thing fcg thinks it is double sided so now... what if the edges were like... squished together and it kinda formed a sphere... from the two flat discs... hmmmm
next time I get into a game where im a player I want to be a flat earther. Ill ask the DM to have the setting really be a flat earth. I assume all the other players will be like your so dumb and then at some point we will find out my low int character was right all along.
Dude I would love to have an official flat earth society card! That sounds like the funniest thing on the globe!
Reminder that the actual flat earth community reached to sam for the running joke of Letters being a Flat Earther.
lmao I had to include it!
I wonder if this was when liam started considering making orym a flat earther as well... Lmaoo
Mercer is not amused
I’m a flat Exandrier.
You know what's the best part? This is technically Matt's fault. Lol
How is it Matt’s fault??
@@charlesjunior5087 During the 'Night Before Critmas', Matt's character made a reference to the world being flat. lol
What I love is that you can tell Sam and Laura had some kind of discussion beforehand, probably Laura complaining about flat earthers.
Ofc FCG is a flat-earther
Oh no they didn't realize they were the joke 😭
