This was a seriously fun car to drive, but also to film and edit. I went with something a little more interesting with the show format while still keeping the core three-act blueprint. Let me know what you think of this style of episode for both the classics and the new car reviews!
I have a 2011 BMW 328i (E92). I bought it 4.5 years ago and it’s been very reliable with zero issues. Even the brakes and battery didn’t need to be replaced 😄. I bought it with 41k miles and now it has 75k. I’m looking to sell it soon as many BMWs start to have issues between 80 and 100k miles. However, it’s been a very good car and I will miss it because it’s the last analog BMW
That’s good to hear, I’m glad you’ve been able to enjoy it with a pretty low mileage start on it. Would you sell it for a slightly newer E92 or try out the F32?
PRN_TestDrive Actually because now I have a family and children I need a bigger car like the BMW (F10). However, the F10 doesn’t have a good reliability record like the E9x. So because I have owned only japanese cars for the past 22 years (except this BMW) and I don’t think I will be lucky twice with a BMW 😄, I’m moving away from BMW to either Lexus or Genesis
You dont need to pump them so much to be faster...Since the M3s V8 is known to lack power you just need to add a software stage 1 and an intercooler and there you go.
Convertibles are fun to drive. I bought 09 335i vert last year for 10,500 in TX. Had 58K miles, garage kept one owner. It's been a blast to drive. Still have my 06 Acura TL with 143K miles as my backup in case it's in the shop.
I love these cars! The spec. here is awesome. The interior looks SO GOOD with the aluminium trim. You're so right when you say they don't make em' like this any more. I'll never forget the feel of these awesome vehicles. Thanks for putting this one together, Nile!

Thanks for the review! I wasn’t aware this model was leaning towards analogue era of BMW’s. I’ve got an E39 520i, but would love something with power next... this could be a contender now!
I have the 2011 E93 N55 and do not have to worry about the rattles, waterpump hasn't been an issue and I'm over 150k, my stock turbo is still there and working fine. Had to change out the battery but didn't go with a BMW battery but picked up an aftermarket one much cheaper and did my own coding of it with a simple App. Avoid the STEALERships at all costs, find a good Indy shop! Great review!!
e92/93 is one of my favourite bmw ever, i dont care about the last fancy 3 series with giant screens, laser headlights... this one is quite simple but not old, design aged well and is quite powerfull too, with a nice inline 6 instead of an ordinary inline 4 like the new 330i. i considered buying an E92 coupé, but dont fit in the garage and i was afraid of ownership costs
Ownership costs are definitely a potential concern, best if you're able to budget for hefty repairs so you aren't stranded. I think it'll be one of the few modern enough BMW designs that will continue to age insanely well.
I’ve got an E93 335i 2008 auto with the paddles 🇬🇧 had it for 6 years now just recently started the annoying rattle when u rev it hard 🙄 apart from that it’s awesome still looks & performs good for a 12 year old car
Very true. I’ve owned e36’s, e46’s, 530d x2, e90 330 x 3, the best it e93 335i is the best. But get a nice one with full service history. Lovely car from stock though 👍🏼
This generation of BMws will always be controversial when it comes to looks. I hate the Bangle butt 7 series and 6 series, the 5 and 3 are good looking. Still, while this is great performance, definitely get a extended warranty for any BMW out of warranty. I had a 2004 530i with active steering and the rack and computer and labor cost 5,000 for that item alone (thank God for extended warranty). That scared me from any BMW for ever and I recommend leasing as best path forward 😁
This engine is definitely prone to issues, specifically with the turbos. Many say the N55 is a more reliable engine since it’s a single turbo, while others just go with the 328i for less power and less headache. Still a really fun car to drive 11 years on!
PRN_TestDrive thank you! I had it for 18 months and sold it because i missed a roadster/convertible! Before i owned serveral z4‘s and back then i bought a z4 again.... and right now im looking for a z4 (again)😝
The 335is also could be optioned with a dual-clutch automatic transmission, specifically the same transmission as the m3, and a limited slip differential from the m3, so i'd say if performance is your game the 335is is your weapon 😁
Great review, I’m after one of these at the moment, unfortunately it’s in Quebec and I’m in New Brunswick! So unable to go look at it in person due to COVID restrictions...sometimes ya gotta gamble!
I hear ya! They do come up for sale regularly enough, hopefully you'll be able to find one more local to you, or things will start to improve for all of us and you'll be able to come see the one you've spotted.
I’ve owned my 2008 e92 328i since new. Other than brake pads (original discs) and regular oil changes I’ve had a completely trouble free 90,000 km with this car. The only factory modification I added is the sport exhaust which is worth every penny. Sounds better than the 335.
RWD only isn't my favourite winter setup, but it's doable. Personally I wouldn't look at one to be driven in the winter, I don't think the convertible aspect is a problem it's just the overall control. I daily drove a RWD 7 Series in the winter, if you want to do it I'd highly recommend going with a serious set of winter tires like Pirelli Scorpions.
I think I counted about 20 M badges on the X7 M50i when I did it, they’d put them on the seat belt buckles if they thought it would sell one more car 😂
What year should I be looking out for a 335i e93, from what I know 2009-10 is ideal 2011 is when the n55 single turbo is traded out which I believe is known to have issues
Some will say the 2009 and 2010 are the best to go with, but even those could be problematic if the maintenance wasn't done properly. It's best to go with the vehicle that typically has the most service history available, and can be checked over by a trusted mechanic.
It still uses that basic BMW formula, RWD, straight 6 up front, handling like you wouldn’t believe. Just the right amount of tech to keep it modern without overloading it.
Good review! Really wish you got a hard top manual to review. I have a clean one 6MT, no nav, and overboost. If you ever are in the Windsor area hit me up. Will love to have you review it
Ça dépends de la condition de la voiture, et le kilometrage. C'est aussi le F30, donc ça va être un peut plus que ça. C'est un bon achète si tu est préparé pour le coût pour les réparations.
i dunno about analogue. turbos, valvetronic, electric water pump. the e36 is really the last true analogue 3 series. arguably the e46 too. but the e9x is a stretch. also if i’m not mistaken the 12v battery in the e9x needs programming should you need to replace it which for the average driver would mean a trip to the dealer or a shop.. just to replace the battery (due to software programming)
With the direction modern cars are going, replacing all buttons with screens, removing physical linkages with the mechanical parts and their connection to the driver, cars are becoming a lot more electronic.
Exactly! Even if you budget about $5k a year in repairs you're still getting one hell of a nice car for the price, compared to what $20,000 can get you for a brand-new car.
It depends on what you’re looking for out of your car, the bmw will need frequent servicing and there might be unexpected repairs early into ownership depending on the service history. If you’re able to budget for those repairs and possible downtime then the used market is definitely the way to go.
That's the same generation as this................................................. I wasn't implying the 2009 model year was the first, the E46 generation as a whole is. In 100,000+ views you're the only one that seems to have confused this.
No clue why you felt the need to post this, I can guarantee I never said this was a sedan. If anything I may have mentioned it being an E90, in place of the E93, as most people refer to any of the 4 body styles as an E90 to make things easier when discussing this generation in general. Should I have used the term 'Compact Executive Sedan', that's the segment.
Some might say the E30 was the last, or the Isetta. The point is it’s an opinion, that’s going to be different for everyone. The F30 and succeeding BMWs are all heavily digitized with more complicated engines, electronics, and driving nannies. This E9X still gives drivers a lot of control, which I go over in this video and explain my reasoning for the title.
Worst car I've ever owned. A bottomless pit of repairs including the power top. That said. I really enjoy it when it isn't broken thus the reason I've put 170k on it after many years.
Depends on what you want out of your vehicle. The 2013 is a different generation over the E90 here. The 335i does have turbo waste gate issues which were pretty common when these were new, and I imagine get worse as the car ages. The 2013 would be more reliable.
