- Bryan Enderle grew up in Modesto, CA though he now lives in Davis, CA with his wife, Peggy, and son, Isaac. Bryan received two BS degrees, in Chemical and Petroleum Engineering; an MA in Theology; and an MS and PhD in Chemical Engineering. Personally, he enjoys grappling with the topics of theology and science, both as individual and intersecting topics. Without arguing one way or the other, Enderle uses modern science to make certain fantastic aspects of a modern God more plausible. In doing so he creates a space where science and religion can coexist.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Science and GOD are not separate, science is just the proof of all that GOD has done, science itself has never told you, GOD isn't real, a SCIENTIST has, the reason the 'Big Bang' and theories along those lines even exists (which all contradict scientific laws, Law of Conservation of Mass, First law of Thermodynamics, etc) is because of doubt of HUMANS. And speaking on that fact, why would you even want to doubt GOD? As a Christian I like to think about the idea of scientists discovering how something actually works and God says, "Thank you. By the way I already knew about that. I made it that way".

I’m not a scientist or have the ability to articulate the scientific methods as such, however, I’ve always felt and believed that both science and Religion or God or the creator etc... are like two rivers flowing side by side. Each has explanations to what the other can’t explain, and towards the ends of the rivers’ flow, they both merge in a sea of knowledge.
I always imagined it more like there is one long giant river which is science. Along that river it occasionally breaks into small streams or creeks that run away from the one main river. The small streams usually don't go very far before they end but the river always makes it all the way to the ocean. The small streams and creeks are religions, gods, myths, failed hypothesis and theories etc.

Can't people just enjoy an amazing talk presented by a scientist who believes in God?
Internet arguments are never productive because there is no face attached to the words. Look at some of these comments. If you were having a face to face conversation, would such things be said?
My one and only complaint is that while this TEDx channel did a good job posting his scientific credentials, it ignored the fact he is also a staff worker for a faith based org on campus.
I use my name and pic for that exact reason but I am on disability and not worried about financial persecution for my views one way or another. Those with repressive careers do not always have that freedom.
Big truth there that I realised recently, internet arguments are totally unfruitful because everyone wants to speak and no-one wants to hear!

The man did not prove his conclusion that God and Science are interconnected. All he did was say that it's not surprising that God could share some weird properties that quantum particles have. That's not proof of codependency between God and Science.
Dr. E! You made it to TED TALKS. I heard him give this talk as a freshman and I can tell you this man is amazing. I wish everyone who is comfortable criticizing him from behind their computers could meet him in person and ask him their questions. I assure you he would answer them and comfortably admit if he didn't know or have an answer. He has so much more understanding than just what you are hearing in this talk. GO DR. E!

Every scientific endeavour starts as an act of faith. Without the fundamental belief that there is something to discover, there is no purpose to exploration. If we do not believe we can escape we will remain forever imprisoned.
Hilton Hawkes the aim of the scientific method is, officially, not to discover something of use, but to determine the best answer to a question of interest using the six steps of the method. Some answer can always be obtained, but it can never be the complete truth.

Only read the Einstein and Charles Darwin quotes and they are all one-sided and ignore quotes like the ones I have already given which are obviously important in understanding Einstein/Darwins true thoughts. One may reasonably conclude that Einstein/Darwin believed in a non-deistic God.

Great video! It really tells many of us how small minded people have become. Isaac newton and Einstein were both smarter than many of us here on RUclips. They understood things we don't understand. So that's pretty cool to know that many scientists feel the same way.

This hasn't convinced me of a god but this is definitely the strongest argument and most convincing argument I've seen for the proof in god. Well done, I highly respect what you've done here but I still stick to my beliefs of a universe created by and of random events.
I respect that. but I do have one question... I don't want it to turn into an argument I just want a respectful question. the chance that the universe was randomly created is like rolling 2 dice and having it get 12 over 70 times in a row. if that happened in real life you would think the dice are rigged. or in this case there might be no dice at all.

I am currently a chem major and this blew my mind. Science is already as complex as it is yet it all just happens to work well together?? How? It all seems too perfect. And the first three examples are all topics I have already learned. But the way you made that connection of how "if xyz happens then why can't there even be a small possibility of a god being real".

I would think the existence of the philosophy of materialism is apparent & evident in converse, beyond freshman debate rulings. It is a tendency to consider material possessions and physical comfort as more important than spiritual values. For example, the exploitation of natural resources without regard for environmental impact.

Science and GOD are not separate, science is just the proof of all that GOD has done, science itself has never told you, GOD isn't real, a SCIENTIST has, the reason the 'Big Bang' and theories along those lines even exists (which all contradict scientific laws, Law of Conservation of Mass, First law of Thermodynamics, etc) is because of doubt of HUMANS. And speaking on that fact, why would you even want to doubt GOD? If you know the gospel (which translates over to 'good news') of JESUS, you would know that JESUS died FOR YOU, and because of that death, WE HAVE THE REWARD of HEAVEN, why would someone even want to reject that, please humble yourselves, to trust in JESUSS as your LORD and SAVIOR, JESUS loves you so much that, even though many of you say these type of things and actually believe them, HE STILL DIED FOR YOU Romans 5:8 // But GOD demonstrates his own love for us in this While we were still sinners CHRIST died for us. there is good reason for the frustration. Firstly, if you are an American, you live in a scientifically illiterate country. So it is frustrating as a scientist to see a video that would further drive the ignorance. A scientist doesn't presuppose anything unless there is valid reason. Secondly, this is a TED talk. That is disgusting. A TED talk, ideas worth spreading. No. What he does is use a rudimentary understanding of the concepts to disguise a presupposition. Not science. Then to have the gall to bring up quotes by Newton, a genius in his own time who undoubtedly would disagree with the God Hypothesis were he alive today, to begin his rambling, in an attempt to justify his pseudoscience.

Actually, Newton was known to be a devotedly Christian scientist - he put off the publication of Principia 7 years because he felt that it revealed the mind of God. He was believed to have died a virgin!

Even the history of Western higher education denotes that the sciences were originally an 'out - growth' of philosophy, which itself was strongly related to theology - PhD = doctorate of philosophy.

Most scientists will not come out that they believe in a god. Its really not a good move if they want to be taken seriously in allot of respects. The scientific world isn't as open minded as you may think.

As an atheist (and a guy who likes Science), I have no problem with Science stumbling across an irrefutable proof of (any) god's existence. This would answer an very old question "Does god(s) exist?" (my current answer is "probably not") and raise a lot of new and more interesting ones: Where she/he/it lives? What's made of? etc. And the scientist who make this discovery would be the single most famous in History.
Thing is: Science is fact-based. In being so, scientists doesn't support god's hypothesis by a lack of faith, but by a lack of facts.
The scientific community is the most open minded, except by open there's still a requirement for evidence otherwise we're just the crowd cheering the emperors new clothes

How does it matter if god exists or not? If it gives you peace in believing in something (provided you aren't harming others), no one should have the right to tell you what you should do. We as a species must work together, irrespective of our beliefs, to reduce pain and suffering in the world. But all we care about is being right about things that don't matter.
Because if God exists, our creation was intentional and purposeful, not accidental and arbitrary. So it would seem that unless we are able to discern that purpose, then we are living out of touch with our nature and reality. We had better discover that purpose and start working toward it.

Isaac Newton wrote more articles about religious subjects than scientific ones, but he couldn't publish them. Why? The Church would have burned him at the stake. He argued against the Trinity, hellfire and the immortality of the soul. He was a serious student of the Bible. His explanation of Daniel 11 which covers much of human history before it happened is positively amazing.

Im a christian and just saw the movie Lucy last night. This presentation kind of reminds me of that movie although I would say that the conclusions of this video and Lucy were different in the sense that Lucy ended with the idea that we as humans could basically become God through further understanding or knowledge (through modern science) while throughout the movie continually attributing all of the universe to "natural" causes and thereby leaving no opportunity for God to be part of the picture while Bryan Enderle leaves the possibility wide open based on the same modern science or understanding. Obviously, I agree more with Bryan's conclusions that God exists and completes the total picture of existence. I believe in contrast to the movie Lucy that the more we understand about the universe the closer it will draw us to God. The biggest difference however is that we learn about the universe through experimentation and the scientific method but we learn about God through relationship. God can not be put in a test tube but He can be known through relationship. This has been my experience.

No there isn’t a scientific explanation for any miracle that Jesus did. Miracles by definition go beyond physics and our understanding and are reserved to God himself and his understanding. It’s fooling to think that we can know everything!

Great video. It reminds me of the Zen koan regarding an argument two scientists are having about the fundamental nature of the tree branch. One insists the branch is a support for dozens of twigs and hundreds of leaves. The other is adamant that the branch is a conduit for fluids to flow up from the roots and down from the photosynthesizing leaves. Tiring after hours of debate they notice a dog sleeping in the shade.
This is much better than any evolution vs creation debate.

Science doesn't start with a presupposition of god. He does, then goes on to describe in nebulous ways how god could be compatible with science. Starting with assumed conclusions is not how the scientific method works. It's entirely speculative and not grounded in anything demonstrable or investigatable.

@@baldy_locks167 Ok ill try to explain how he interpreted the video. He is saying that the talker of the video believes in god and so the talker has only been looking at the parts of science that agree with god. But in order for science to be science you have to look at the whole picture.
@@Beowulf19 He's not presenting this as definitive evidence of anything though. If anything he's just trying to challenge the way we tend to think of "God". Rather than some bearded man in the sky, maybe "God" is a force of nature capable of being observed and understood scientifically. Especially when talking about science on the particle level, you can't really discredit his arguments as "not looking at the whole picture" because quantum physics itself doesn't sit well within the big picture, at least not yet.
There might be a creator of everything but that creator doesn't have anything to do with the religious books out there. That's the best way to look at it.

Doubtful. Our ancestors were not morons and would would most likely see me as a human who had some sort of a really different looking tool, or maybe jewelry, and would want to know how it was made. I can say this with relative certainty because in a way we've tested the theory. We have plenty of cases where uncontacted or isolated tribes have been introduced to comparatively advanced technology. Turns out they don't bow down and worship the holder as a god like they do in 50s movies. They tend to examine our objects with interest.

But.. to answer this question we first need to define what we mean by the word - GOD... The word - GOD - functions as a SYMBOL.. representing.. the underlying Unity.. and.. or.. as a METAPHOR.. representing a personification of a motivating power of a value system that functions in human life and in the universe. The force and energy that supports the world.. a personification of the power or force that seems to regulate the physical universe.. etc
All of existence is itself a part of God - God is the sum of ALL natural processes - The Ground of ALL being - Omnipresence (present everywhere), the Supreme or Ultimate reality. The creative and controlling force in the universe - The force regarded as causing and regulating the phenomena of the world by the universal natural laws - God is outside and inside space-time. Not subject to the cycle of birth and death - The Ultimate, the Absolute, Infinite and Eternal.

don't worry, you're just an agreement about the maximizing the lifespan of cells as much as possible. But you're alive. There's no aftermath, you need to live your life in the best. So if God exists, you could easily say "I lived my life at the best, something that people would never do"
It says god wants everybody to go to heaven but if he actually wanted that he would show us solid proof of his existence religion is a man made thing

Crazsus the world itself is signs of His existance. You are a sign of Him. Look at your perfect beings, your hands crafted so you can handle your daily life on your own but at the same time helping others as well.
There are a lot of His signs we are taking for granted on our daily life. Nothing is in our control except with His will. He can suddenly make a fine working men turn blind the next day..
so, before it is too late, keep finding Him. He is always there for you, that is why you can breath oxygen each seconds and make decisions for every challenges. With His will, He can make our day better or not the next hour.
Look around, think and sincerely let Him guide you.

Science does not attempt to explain everything and it is not a substitute for religion. Science is just a means to continue gaining knowledge of the world around us.
His foundation example is flawed. The example of particle leaving the atom does not violate conservation of energy and hence not so "miraculous".

Hey, conservation of energy does not mean you save as much energy as possible. I know the English is a little confusing. Lol.
'God in the gaps.' Knowledge has grown since this was made, and he made inaccurate statements as foundation of his points. Im not saying he is wrong. Im saying his 'facts' dont help his point. They arent quite facts. This does more harm than good I believe. One should be on firm ground, especially in this sort of discussion. Example, The photon being 'outside of time' would be more accurate said 'photons do not experience time.' They are clearly in time, we see them. Little things like this are where big distortions come from. 'There is nothing in the empty space inside atoms.' Popular idea, but not a statement science would make. We may not see anything there, but that means only that we dont see anything. NOT that nothing is there.

Moses, Jesus & Muhammad would all agree that is a real definition of God.
The atheist definition of God is a non-existent, fairy-tale, imaginary being with no power to create or rule any universe. No believer would ever agree with the atheist definition of God, not one. Yes, laws of nature together with forces of physics do not share human emotion or consciousness, if God were anything like us evolved apes then nothing could or would ever exist. There is only one all natural genuine existence capable of creating & ruling the universe & that existence is God.
We believers in the real God should get together and spread the good news that there is a supreme existence that did create the universe from scratch and does govern all reality with laws of nature that are actualized into physical reality by forces of physics.
if god was the laws that make up the universe. It can't be the creator of the universe for it is the product of something. The universal laws we live in are all the products of something. So god cannot be the creator since he is the product of something.

TechMasterDrew TMD sounds like you are beginning with the assumption that there is a god. Most people do, including the man in the video. I do not see a reason to think god is real. Things are interesting and unknown but that tells us nothing about if there is a god or not...just my 2 cents

I find that it takes more faith to accept that a multi-dimensional universe exploded into existence and that life more complicated than anything we could ever begin to imagine formed by luck. Time, space and matter can’t cause itself to exist. Something outside these boundary needs to exist. That something we call God
