- Extended interview with John Woloschuk from Canadian band Klaatu on the 40th anniversary of their debut album 3:47 EST.
Of all the interviews recorded for this feature, John's was the most in depth and comprehensive, giving us a track by track run-down on the album.

this guy is a musical genius, seriously...they never made it big and they should have gone to the top
John Woloschuk, I hope you read this and know that your work with Klaatu is still being appreciated in 2021. The album Hope is still one of the best ever, 45 years later. I once heard it on an excellent sound system in a planetarium with a coordinated star show, a great memory.
This is outstanding. Woloschuk is so forthcoming and his recall is complete and detailed. Thankfully, the interviewer doesn't interrupt and let's him speak. There needs to be a Klaatu book put together depicting their notes, photos, details about the recordings, and the bands overall career.
Thanks for the feedback.
Even with the guy singing "California!" right before the guitar break sounding like Paul McCartney, I never thought they were the Beatles in disguise. Heavily influenced? Yes! But to me they sounded more like Badfinger doing Beatles style songs.
Don't be intimidated or deterred by the length of this interview. If you're a Klaatu fan you'll cherish every moment of it. Woloschuk is as articulate as he is brilliant and a joy to listen to. Not exactly humble, not exactly not. In other words, thoroughly unpretentious -- and like their music, a font of imagination and vivid recollection. A thorough familiarity with Klaatu's first three albums should be on any serious music fan's bucket list.
I couldn't agree more
one of the best interviews ever, discussing musical gems
Glad you enjoyed it!
Klaatu is a way underrated band and deserve much more credit for what they did. But hey, they were rumored to be the Beatles under the guise of Klaatu. Canada's contribution to rock.
totally with you
True, Neil Young did nothing for Rock
Rush neither.
I just recently discovered Klaatu, and there's so little information on the band and it's members. It's honestly so tragic, but I'm really glad to have found this interview
Glad you enjoyed it!
Would absolutely love to hear John do a track by track breakdown of Hope, that album is a masterpiece.
Yes! One of my favourite albums of all time.
One slight error…CHUM-FM in Toronto changed its format to album rock in 1968, not 1969 as he said. I remember it well, because in December 1968 I interviewed one of their DJs for my school newspaper, and since it was my birthday, he gave me a copy of The Beatles white album, which had just been released.
Little Neutrino is one of the greatest songs ever recorded! 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🐁
I can't disagree with you there.
It is one of my favorite songs, outstanding arrangement.
almost as good vocals as Millie Vanilli
@@briangoodspeed8807 They used a vocoder for the vocals to make it sound like an alien.
He named all the time Dee Long and Terry Brown, but he spoke very little about Terry Draper.
John and Dee influenced my life in such a positive way through their music, that I need to celebrate them. Glad I heard this. Thank you for posting this. John's clarity is fascinating. Peace!!!😍😎
You're welcome
That was an absolute pleasure to listen to!!
and then some...almost better than the beatles
My 2 favorite bands are Canadian Klaatu and Rush
nice
I was watching a video yesterday where John was showing his song to George who was learning it. John played a chord and couldn't tell George the name of the chord. He then asked YOKO! I am telling you, as much as I love Beatles, I understand that they weren't actually as musically talented as we were sold. Listen to the deep cuts of Klaatu and you will find musical sophistication that Beatles NEVER even got close to. We all got SOLD on The Beatles so well that most of us believe that they were Gods. They were FANTASTIC, yes, but NOT Gods. Other folks have been as talented also but didn't fall under the same set of circumstances that coincide to create "Legends". Perspective seems to be the key word here.🙄😎
Are you just saying that because John didn't know what chord he was playing? Pff, I'm sorry but you don't know what you're talking about.
Wow!!
bloody brilliant album. i bet jellyfish love it.
I remember when first Klaatu Album was released…. I was working at a record store called Mr. music in Mattoon Illinois….! I am 67 years old now but I have been a actual working musician my entire life ….! I now own a school of music and I am still playing out live….🎶❤️🙏🏻🎼 We would put New albums on in the record store and play them for the customers…. Nobody in the record store had ever heard of Klaatu…? And I thought the album cover was so cool it had so much of a ( SI-FI ) space theme about it…, well of course I had to play it for the store….! Eventually the store manager asked me to please play another album I must’ve played the album for three or four hours straight I just could not believe this band research creative writers and arrangers absolutely phenomenal work for 1975 or 1976 I can’t remember what year it was….? And then I heard all the stories and hoopla about it supposedly being the Beatles…… I ended up buying every Klaatu Album that came out that I could get my hands on…..!!! When the album came out that finally had their faces on the back it was almost like it was real….! For me it was like “ I should have recognized somebody in the group “ ….! I remember on Sabrosa subway,
One of the guys I worked with had recently got back from Vietnam a few years earlier…! He was in the Morse code receiving outfit that would receive the enemy signals and was a master at Morse code we played that album so many times and he tried to decipher the Morse code towards the end of the album…….!! I still get the same feeling when I listen to the group today as I did when I heard them the first…🎶🙏🏻🙏🏻🎼
In my Humble ( professional musical opinion ) …. The boys in klaatu are the most underrated band in history , when it comes to musical arrangement,
Storytelling and talent…..!!! Thank you for your wonderful contribution to amazing music..!

He is so amazing!!!! Is he still alive?
Very much so. I spoke to him yesterday (January 12, 2020). I worked as their stage manager during their very brief touring history in the early 1980's.
@@slugbird1955 WOW
They sang in liverpool accents dont tell me they didnt
I wonder why they did. Still they sounded amazing
I'd like to get the 40th Anniversary CD, but I can't find it anywhere. Even Amazon it's not available. Not even on eBay!! WTH!!
Same. I genuinely wanna buy a Turntable just so I can play 3:47EST on it, but the album is nowhere to be found

Uh, in MY estimation, Klaatu SURPASSED Beatle activity! 😏🤩😍😎
saxmidiman - Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha Ha ha ha ha.... yeah, right. How long have you been an idiot?
@@warmswarm How long you been a Hater? Peace, My Baby!

@@saxmidiman - You seem to completely miss the point. So, you saying that because Klaatu knew the names of every chord they ever played that makes them better than The Beatles. In fact the opposite is true. You think that because Klaatu wrote "more complex" music that makes them better than The Beatles. No, No, and thrice no young saxmidiboy.
no john, there is no good music anymore, you were a pinnacle
I think the sun looks like the Flag of Argentina.
"Progressive"... Really? I love the album, but it's more of a pop-rock record than anything, but cool interview.
Yes. Music is subjective but for me this is Prog Pop.
Prog pop/psychedelic Pop
He has Ukrainian roots?
I am not sure.
I think he's of Polish heritage, judging by the use of the letter W. One of the many many Americans and Canadians with Polish ancestry. A lot of those Polish last names were partially anglicized at one point, like in the case of Dave Pagurek (originally Pagórek) and Bobby Jarzombek (originally Jarząbek). B)
Original title to California Jam was way cooler lol
How can these guys be considered geniuses if they're trading on the sound and art of another group ? They're not innovators of their sound. Everything he's talked about especially with regard to mellotron and studio tricks are things the Beatles did. They're great imitators and musical technicians . But not geniuses.
You have obviously never written songs. The Beatles even borrowed from everything they were hearing. By all measures, Klaatu was an excellent band.
Mano .... With just three people whatsoever, Klaatu made songs very confused and resembling the Beatles! Four geniuses of music were confused with these three strangers. This is an achievement.
I am klaa2
Maya you are subhuman filth.
