I love Klaatu! Thanks Michael for spreading the news about this band! In the past I would talk about Sparks many times in my videos and over the years I've heard of MANY viewers becoming fans of the band. The same will happen with Klaatu for you. As I've mentioned before, I was hoping they were The Beatles when I bought 3:47 E.S.T. but after less than a minute of the opening track I knew it wasn't, but I was not disappointed at all. The one song that sounds a lot like Paul McCartney is "Sub-Rosa Subway". It almost sounded like Paul!". The followup album "Hope" was disappointing to me when I bought it on release, I thought it was way too cheesy and pop sounding. I was wrong. About ten years ago I gave it another listen and now it is my favorite Klaatu album! "Sir Army Suit" is also fantastic, as is "Endangered Species". The Carpenters were pretty brave and COOL to cover "Calling Occupants" and release it as a single. Of all their superb songs, I think their greatest song for me is "Little Neutrino", followed closely by "Long Live Politzania".

You must think highly of yourself to have arrived at the conclusion that your videos have pushed people toward Sparks. Sparks have had many incarnations and in the US the "Cool Places" video with Jane Weidlin had drawn attention to Sparks and their humor but I'm sure there is an active pocket of studmuffin influenced Sparks fans.

The first Klaatu LP was incredibly well engineered, and its sonics rank up there with the albums Alan Parsons engineered. It was a great disc to show off your audiophile-quality stereo system. Little Neutrino particularly was a great track to give subwoofers a workout when the rocket ship takes off near the end of the song. I do most of my music listening with high quality earbuds by Sennheiser and am always amazed by the detailed sound quality in esch song. It was a true labor of love producing that first album.

HAPPY NEW YEAR PLANET EARTH AND MR. NOLAND
I can't ever get too much Klaatu in my life. They of course sound very Beatley but they have enough to make themselves distinct and special. There prices of the albums on eBay are beyond belief now. Apparently, it took years for their albums to be put out on cd.
They take one back to a time where albums when albums were as important as the songs. I think my favourite is Magenta Lane. Maybe the most commercial but I don't care I love it even Mrs' Toad's Cookies - very Paul McCartney. Melody was still important back then.
I love the versatility of material from the whimsy of Mrs. Toad Cookies to great rockers like Blue Smoke, Sell Out, Sell Out, Juicy Lucy, the pop rock of A Routine Day, psychedelic tracks including The Carpenters hit, the gorgeous folk ballad All Things End and the folk/pop of Magenta Lane which opens and closes the album of the same name, minus the mouse squeak! When listening to the track All Things End think of your best lifelong friend and the songs resonates without being over-the-top sentimental but rather genuinely affecting. Overall, what I love about their albums is that they make me smile. How many albums can do that these days.
They did release a compilation album SunSet in 2005 but the material of the original recordings is superior (just my opinion) as they are produced with more clarity and a lighter touch. They also produced a (non-quite completed) animation called Happy New Year Planet Earth. Very apt to mention this time of year. It's on RUclips and includes A Routine Day as Michael points out, another great track. Thanks Michael for another great video with new information I wasn't aware of.
Also, out there for your viewing pleasure is aa one hour special called A Routine Day - The Interviews Klaatu - Behind the Scenes (Sir Army Suit Bonus DVD) and there are a least two one hour interviews with a member of the band.
Happy New Year to Michael and his subscribers. May 2024 avoid the errors of 2023. And it feels so good, feels so good, feels so good to be back home.

"and the path before us lies before our very eyes, can't you see. . . . ". positively brilliant. Will love these guys beyond my grave.

Thanks for showing this band some love.
I was a teenager when the DJ's, (remember DJs?), were playing up the Beatle/Klaatu thing in Daytona Beach where I grew up.
I never thought it was the Beatles but I DID manage to find their first album, vinyl, in a K-Mart and I bought it. It's still in my collection.
I liked them, I never delved into more of their music till the internet came on board.
They should have been a more well known group but like with most bands, their fans love them.
It was Tony Peluso, the Carpenters guitarist, who brought them to Richard Carpenter's attention. They chose the Calling Occupants song to cover, things were getting stale in the Carpenter's camp.
Thanks again for spending time on this group, I haven't seen too many people do that.
Your channel just gets better and better. h

I played a few Klaatu tracks to set the scene before watching the video and dug what I heard. Great job by the way for passionately giving us more info on Klaatu! I'd heard of them but had never really heard their music before. I'll definitely have a deep dive now! And I guess that's why these videos that cover bands that for whatever reason are not so well known nowadays are so important - if we hear something compelling about an old band, well hey, we can probably listen to all their music online and give it likes and share it etc - but in someways trying to discover exciting music both old and new on the internet is like walking through a jungle, it can help to have a guide!
Anyway keep up the great work Michael and as a Brit who was a teenager getting into music in the 90s I'll definitely be up for your take on Oasis, they weren't always my cup of tea, but they did have some amazing songs and were certainly huge in Britain!
All the best for 2024 and keep on rockin'!!!

Dee Long actually met Sir Paul many years later while they were at the same studio in London. Paul had never heard the rumors from back in the day. The news was over there at the time though, as a British news columnist started an article with the title "Deaf idiot journalist starts Beatles rumour" lol. I'm happy to see this vid as i have been a fan since they started. Me and my best friend were huge Beatles fans back then(always will be) and the rumors about Klaatu definitely sparked our interest. Once we started listening though we didn't care about rumors anymore, they were a great band in their own right. We figured out pretty quickly it wasn't the Beatles but they certainly penned and sang songs that sounded quite similar in some cases. My favorites were the first album( simply titled Klaatu on the original US release) and Sir Army Suit. If memory serves correctly i read that alot of their music was recorded in a mobile studio right out in Terry Brown's driveway lol. They did alot of innovative things at the time. Idk if it was owing to the Beatle rumor or not but they kept their identities (names and pics) off of the records until well into their career, although there are sketches of all three of them, along with many other people, on the cover of Sir Army Suit. Klaatu is a band well woth checking out, especially the first four albums imho.

One thing that fuelled the fire of speculation of just who Klaatu were was the fact that they did not put their names anywhere on the first three albums. The writing credit simply said all music & lyrics by Klaatu. So, people began to guess that it was someone well known recording incognito. And by the way, you neglected to mention my favourite track on the first album, Little Neutrino. I’ve blown speakers with the explosions near the end of that one. And, an excerpt of that track is embedded, I think playing backwards, in Silly Boys on Sir Army Suit. Love this band!

We all piled in my '69 Toronado and drove around listening to it, cruisin' and checking it out for the first time. I still have this album.

Speaking of psychedelic music, I’d love to see you do a deep dive on Steppenwolf, which is one of the most overlooked classic rock bands. Their blend of hard rock, blues, and psychedelic was awesome.

I remember the Klaatu- ‘they might be The Beatles in disguise’ back in high school. I thought they were purposely trying to sound like the Beatles but weren’t successful . I never paid any attention to the band and they quickly vanished from my music radar.

Loved Klaatu, especially the first two albums. Unfortunately, I can't seem to find their albums on any streaming service.

I still have their first album. "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft" became a top 40 hit for The Carpenters but didn't go past #30 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. I think that "Sub-Rosa Subway" sounded like a song that The Turtles could have done. It was closer to their style.

Totally agree Michael, Klaatu has always been on my turntable or now on youtube, I think 3.47 is a best album that Klaatu ever produced and recorded. There other albums vere off in directons that I felt lost there audience but I guess to me 3.47 like the Beatles Sgt Peppers hit the mark for psychodelic trip I agree they did some wonderful work but 3.47 and Dr. Marvello and my personal top 10 all time track Little Neutrino now that is a trip all in itself that I have taken over and over again and look forward to the next time sun bath on mercury or jam on Jupitar Dee Long and Terry Draper to me are the driving force to Klaatu and long live Klaatu.

I really loved their first album, but Hope was absolutely brilliant. From beginning to end, it is a progressive rock masterpiece. Highly recommended.

I love the bass lines they came up with. Also the drums were a real draw for me. I am not a musician, just a poet who can sing a bit, but I know what I like. Unless you have that basic skeletal framework of that bass as drums, you wash out.
The vocals on Little Neutrino reminded me of Alan Parsons Project. As a 70's kid, those 2 bands and Rush were my baby food. Thanks for making this video!

Back in the mid 80s, XTC revisited the psychedelic era with their alter ego band/side project, The Dukes of Stratosphear. Their two releases, 25 O'clock and Psonic Psunspot, are some of the best songs that should have been released in 1977. They even made sure to use vintage gear from that era.

The imaging of the movie poster (The day the earth stood still) has quite similarities to Queen's News of of the World cover... Maybe another reference to this 1950s "Klaatu" movie... 🙂

The funny thing about Klattu ,and that first record, over the years I hear klattu, melodies or influences or maybe they nicked some of them? But a song by the Commodores, easy like Sunday morning, is the melody of Calling Occupants ? Then the bass and guitar work on California Jam near the end sounds very Boston like? And some of the vocal sounds like Beachbaby, by First Class? The way klattu displayed these influences, was very Beatles like? I must confess when the article came out in the Providence Journal, I was about 15 and I was convinced it was the Beatles after buying the record? They where very good!

2:02 Apart from Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds, (and possibly Kite) how is Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (the album) remotely psychedelic...? Apart from popular opinion... which is wrong.
The Beatles never made a psychedelic ALBUM - only the occasional foray into psychedelia. Also, they did NOT ''establish'' far less ''invented'' psychedelia. There were plenty of psychedelia-inspired LPs and singles well BEFORE Sergeant Pepper's, including especially The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators which was released in October 1966... months before Sgt Pepper's. Further, two other bands also used the word (''psychedelic'') in titles of LPs released in November 1966: The Blues Magoos' Psychedelic Lollipop, and the Deep's Psychedelic Moods. Admittedly, certain tracks of the Beatles' album, Revolver, from May 1966 show LSD / psychedelic influence (notably: Tomorrow Never Knows), but The Byrd's 'Eight Miles High' from March 1966 pre-empts anything the Beatles did. The claim that the sitar being featured in Norwegian Wood somehow opens the door to psychedelia is one of the most ridiculous stretches in all pop/rock music history.
