Yes sir. I wasted my all my free time consuming any kind of entertainment. Something clicked ticked and now I am showing up everyday!
It's really easy to get stuck on stuff that keeps us entertained since there's so much out there that does that these days. After a while it's not satisfying and once you start working on yourself you and see improvement you find that it's better than any tv show or video game out there. Now I treat real life like a video game and I'm constantly trying to level up!
Once you get out of the consumer mindset and realise how much fun it is to produce as well, it can be lifechanging
@@trucis that's so true! It's fun to consume but it's so much more rewarding to produce!
I'm 31 years old. I've always lived a mediocre life. Not really any goals and my daily activities were either hanging around with friends or smoking weed and playing videogames This year I lost my job due to the pandemic, went through the hardest break up of my life and got evicted from my home as a result of depression and lack of the will to live. After deciding to get my shit together and being lucky enough to have a good friend of mine who introduced me to coding, I can definitely say that learning code ignited the long lost spark inside me again. I can relate to your story 100%. Thank you for being sincere and a down to earth guy.
It sounds like you and I aren't all that different and hopefully that can help you know it's totally something that you can accomplish. I'm sorry for all the shit that you're going through but I am happy to hear that you're finding a positive way of handling it. It's easy for us to fall into deeper struggles when things go wrong and the fact that you're focusing on self improvement shows that your head is in the right spot. Keep at it man because it is hard and you will feel like it's impossible at times but eventually the things that felt impossible become easier and then new challenges will arise and that cycle continues until one day way you look back and say "oh shit I actually did it." At least that's how it felt for me anyways.
Keep going brooo!I am the same train with you!!!The most difficult thing to becone self-developer is to believe...I am 31 and i started two months ago...
Hell ya man! Im so glad to hear u picked yourself up. A lot of us guys give up after those kinda things. I was there too. One good thing leads to another. Keep striving and surround yourself with positive people who motivate and push you.
I like your comment. 🙂
Πως πάει τωρα man
I’m 36, work full time, go to school part-time and have a family on top of it. Teaching myself to code now and develop mobile apps. It’s definitely not easy but your videos inspire me so much to just keep pushing through all the hard stuff, and there is no shortage of it. It was so validating to hear about your own struggles with the honeymoon phase and plateau, because it was starting to feel like a very lonely road. But I keep sitting down every day and hacking away at it, watching videos and reading about it. I still don’t know what the fuck I’m doing 99% of the time, but there is that 1% where things are starting to slowly make more sense, and that also keeps me going. Thank you.
I'm the same age started studying recently have loads of commitments and study every chance I get when I get what little time I have spare . I'm now going to start javascript learning but the tutorial is 21 hours long do I need to study through the whole course or should I start a Web page and look at bits of the tutorial as I need it what do you think 😳
🙂
@@jamesbell8148 okay I'm a year late to answer this but don't watch anything that's 21 hours long. Nobody can remember anything out of a 21 hour long course, let alone actually use it when time comes. Just learn the fundamentals and start doing projects, in projects when you encounter something new or difficult, Google it, stackoverflow it, ask around and find a solution. This way you'll learn real quick without having to learn everything in one go most of which youd forget and wouldn't even be using in real world projects.
@@sarfraznawaz7248 that is tremendous this is exactly what I will do from now on. I find I've spent alot of time and learned nothing ughhhhhhh thanks so much for the advice :) it shows there are good guys out there willing to help others thats why I like dorian so much 😀
@@jamesbell8148 I am also a year late to answer but I am also trying to learn self taught in programming. So what I am trying to point out is those 21 hours long course looks promising and you thought that if you do it then you will become professional overnight but reality is we don't have photographic memory and it's pretty hard to remember stuff if you can't understand it. So after getting hit by reality I learned that nothing happens overnight. Just try to understand the concepts and do 1 lesson each day but with discipline and soon you will make habit then you will see improvement yourself. Hope it helps anyone reading this comment. I am also a self taught designer so I spoke by my experience. Good luck!
"nothing happens overnight. your time will come" good phrases. I really like that you are a simple and sincere person. There's something soulful about your videos
Thank you very much I really appreciate that!
Согласен!
I'm 27 and have been doing BJJ, stopped playing computer games after I started coding, did a few odd jobs here and there.. omg i feel like i can relate so much to your life story.. so much motivation for me this is.. thank you so much for content like this, it's really one of a kind and exactly what some people want to see. Was having one of those directionless days and then I came across this video, and once again you've put me back on track, you're definitely one of the reasons I'm going to become a developer one day, thank you so much Dorian.
You're far from a regular guy! The fact that you're a self taught developer and now you're making a living of it, is a great achievement itself.
You don't have to be a famous dude to inspire others, there's people like me who relates more with "regular people" (you're not) like you.
Thanks to you I'm determined to keep learning and hopefully land a job one day, and I'm sure you will inspire thousands more as well!
Thanks Christian! I know that you'll accomplish your goals! I see you working hard at it and honestly that's all it takes man. I appreciate all the support that you've shown as well glad to be part of your journey!
Interesting background. I'm actually a jiu-jitsu instructor and have been practicing for 18 years. I'm now trying to get into coding at the age of 43. I know I can do it!
Yes you can. 🙂 I'm a BJJ student and coder.
@@TubularAnimator thanks! Actually got into the industry 9 - 10 months ago! :-)
@@AstralisLupus Nice. 😀 Thanks for sharing that info.
@@AstralisLupus please update sir
Everything u said at the beginning is exactly what im going through. Ill be 28 this year, Im pretty much following your path. Great video btw Im glad I subscribed
I'm glad that you subbed also! Really happy that I can be a part of your journey! Keep it up, I look forward to your success!
JUST DO IT!!! All joking aside though one of the biggest things is sticking with it. I'm on my third attempt at being self taught and all the concepts are making more sense than ever but I can't help but think how much further I'd be along had I not given up before.
You're 100% correct! It's all about just sticking with it and eventually you'll get it. Don't get hung up on the "what if", I do that a lot and it's not good. Just focus on the "right now" because that's all you can control and working on the "right now" is what will help you build a better future!
This is good stuff to hear.
Video games are hella fun, but if you get addicted, it strips away very important years off your youth from you.
I used video games to enter a world that distracted me from my responsibilities. Every night before i slept, the weight of all those responsibilities just pile drived on to me, and i started having self image issues, and suicidal thoughts.
I don't know when, but one day, the accumulated weight of all my due responsibilities made me come to an agreement with my myself and I faced my responsibilities more frequently. I set small goals so as to get the feeling of accomplishment more often.
The feeling of accomplishment with real life responsibilities, is far more refreshing, relieving, and rewarding than the dopamine high you get from video games.
Slowly, i managed to shake away my video game addiction, and started working on putting my life together. Still a long way to go, but i know this is the best path i can take from here.
It was great to hear someone like you talk about this. People need to know that things can eventually get better when they take those baby steps towards their responsibilities.
It's crazy how much video games can affect your life. I hardly play anymore these days I'm too busy with other things that bring my life more value.
I'd being lying if I said that video games aren't that bad, at one point in time my wife almost left me because of my addiction to video games. I remember fighting with her over them, I remember neglecting other real life relationships because of them and I remember feeling really lonely because of them.
I'm glad that I don't play as much as I used to now that I'm older. I'm also glad that I focus on myself more because I don't play them as much, one thing that I do now which may or may not help you is that I now treat life like a video game and I focus on "leveling up" in the real world. It's way more satisfying and the rewards last much longer!
Thanks for watching and I'm glad to hear how you've improved your life and mental health, good luck on all your future goals!
Who disliked this? It's such a positive message and exactly what I needed to hear. I'm currently learning python, and from day one on PyCharm, I was hooked. Thanks for the great video Dorian! Keep it up!
Glad it was helpful! There's always going to be people who don't like you, for whatever reason it may be. It doesn't bother me as long as I know that there are people who benefit from what I'm trying to say, that's all that really matters. Thanks for watching!
Hey man, thanks for the video. At 29, I decided to go back to school. I was unsure of what to take so I decided to take math courses (something I always feared in high school). I had forgotten so much I started at pre-algebra, basically 8th grade math. I really committed myself to it and I surprised myself how much I grew to love it. When you described going to the gym, that's exactly how I felt being on campus and going to class. I'm now finishing up calculus and looking forward to transferring to university and majoring in software engineering.
Loved this video. I'm 27 and just getting into coding. I found my spark in traditional chinese kung !
Dorian, I'm in my late 20s and my life trajectory is incredibly similar to yours. I've been learning code slowly between making ends meet with manual labor jobs while battling a video game addiction. You're an inspiration, please continue what you do.
any update?
I'm 30 years old, and just started the journey to learn how to code. Right now JavaScript is kicking my butt. This video was really, really motivating for me. I'm gonna continue to show up for myself, and put in the work. Thanks for all that you do.
Dude, I will be 36 this coming March. I'm just learning how to code. I'm also recovering from an accident from Oct. So my usual manual labor approach is on standby at the moment. These vids help a lot man. We have similar backgrounds and some things you speak on really hit home for me. I really appreciate what you are doing. Keep it up! 👍
Love those video. Thanks for this!
The World is burning outside and i'm all about this code life haha thanks for the content Dorian. Our story is pretty similar so your videos really speak to me.
I hear you! Stuff is crazy right now, all the more to focus on improving ourselves!
“Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself.”
Good luck on your journey, I look forward to hearing about your success!

Love your work brother. Thanks.
cool dude and solid advices!
Dude that was super inspiring. Just what I needed to hear 💥
Awesome. Thanks man.
Thank you for making and posting this video. This made me feel so much less alone. I've had this feeling of not having anything concrete as an interest that gives me a clear sense of Identity. This gives me the feeling that things will be alright if I just keep searching, try to learn and move forward. Thank you!
Thanks for keepin it real af
Really motivation Dorian...Thumbs up
Thank you 🙏 for the honesty. Currently on my journey, needed to hear 👂 this. Best to you and the family.

You're a huge inspiration Dorian, your background is relatable to mine and helps me keep going towards my goal.

Appreciate you for sharing such a motivational story.
Appreciate your sincerity and unpretentiousness. Thanks for sharing and all the best! Cheers from Malaysia :)
Thank you for keep uploading all these kind of motivational video, I just have the same situation like you more or less. The difficult situations sometimes makes us stronger and eager to change for the better life, thank you Dorian
Keep it up and keep working hard. You'd be amazed at how much you can accomplish with some focus and determination! Good luck!
I loved how you encourage people sir, Please keep doing it!
Your not a regular guy your an awesome guy with an awesome message and that awesome message is just what people need so thankyou for taking the time and sharing your journey with the rest of us
Thanks for the inspiration Dorian! I feel my coding journey was very similar to yours. Didn't start getting my life together until my late 20s and that jiu-jitsu/Joe Rogan feedback loop definitely contributed to my growth as well. I'm in California and I was pleasently surprised how many programmers were also jiu-jitsu practioners. Hell some Bay Area offices have mats on-site. That's when I knew I chose the right career lol
I love BJJ.
Thk u 4 ur videos!
Please keep doing this stuff! It really helps. Thank you for sharing your experience in life,
It's funny because I always feel that no one wants to hear this stuff but when these motivational videos get this kind of response from people it makes my really happen that I did talk about this. I'm really glad it helped and thank you for watching!
I respect your analysis . You are absolutely right , we have to program our lives with right codes
I am so happy to find your channel man. I am in the exact boat, 29, tired of wasting away drinking with friends and gaming, working shit dead end jobs just getting by. Started learning code a couple months ago and I have been all over reddit and youtube trying to find a success story I can relate to. This is so motivational!!!!! thank you man! and good fucking job! Maybe think about mentoring guys in your kind of lane. "loser" mindset transition to working your ass off to change your life with programming. I am definitely at that pivotal page of my journey, Im getting my ass out and I aint going back, man.
Hey Dorian, I just want to thank you for your transparency about your past life and for trying to inspire others to assiduously pursue their dreams regardless of their seemingly insurmountable obstacles.
A few months ago I decided to make changes, which includes moving on from IT desktop support to coding. Excellent video.
I truly truly truly appreciate you bro .. Thank you so much..
Man! What a guy. Your way is the high way.
you are a great person "dude". really so much inspiring !! it takes a lot of courage to accept things , self reflect and improve them. i guess that is what can change our lives. thanks for sharing your experiences and awesome content.
It is! I'm actually starting lately about Web development fundamentals. Career shifter! You are right! It's all about the grind.
I love listening to these humble stories. A simple guy with as many flaws as everyone else, achieving something most people (think) wont achieve. These kind of stories motivate the most and they break you out of this mindset that tells you "im this kind of guy, i can never be x or y, thats just not who i am". Thank you for being open about everything
Yes, I was the same way. Something in me changed too. I started paying more attention to everything n wanting to consume as much knowledge as I could. I don't even have anything in common with my old "friends" anymore. I dont even talk to them anymore. I own my own house now n everything. They wanna party n do drugs n I want to win! I got tired of having nothing!! I came to far to turn back. Thank you Dorian! Keep motivating us!
So funny man I did the same thing. I have a lot of old friends that I don't talk to anymore that are still doing the same thing they were doing 10 years ago. Nothing has changed for them and it honestly seems like nothing ever will. They're still on the same old bullshit and complaining about the cards that they were dealt but don't ever try to work to make things better. I have nothing in common with them anymore and many of the memories are a reminder of the person I was and the person that I will never go back to being. The older I get the smaller my circle becomes but the quality of the people that I keep around now is much higher.
@@DorianDevelops Yes, I wish I would have "snapped" sooner. I also wish there was a designated place for people like us to hang out n motivate n teach each other.
Thanks Dorian.. needed this
Glad it helped!!
Thank you!
I love you bro. Thanks for support.
Hi Dorian! You are such a great inspiration. I have probably the same background you have: never set myself up for anything special and I spent plenty of time playing videogames when I was younger, completely forgetting about the future and what I would do next.
But things changed, I was kind of forced to become a nomad, I had to leave my home country for good because of the absurd political and economical crisis, and after five years on the road, I still change countries every 90 days. I usually work as volunteer for hostels and stuff for "free" accommodation. Covid happened and things got really complicated in the hospitality industry. I hit rock-bottom and I had that "click" you mentioned in your video. I cannot just continue doing this because I need to work, I need real skills that will allow me find a proper job anywhere I want (at least on my own, remotely). I'm almost 30, zero relevant skills other than being able to speak multiple languages, but what for? Maybe I could use that knowledge for something greater as I learn how to code but right now I'm completely stuck. I recently found your channel and you got my inspired right away. Now I'm doing my best, everyday using the pommodoro technique studying from 10am-6pm. I have been unemployed for the past year, I got no money and anybody can easily call me a vagabond with a laptop. But the most important fact to mention is that I'm completely determined to make this work, whatever it takes. I just wish I could settle somewhere and take my time studying but that is simply not an option. Oh dear, the challenges of life, innit
Thanks for all the content you have shared so far and keep it up! I just hit the bell button in your channel and I usually never do that. I love your content.
Cheers!
You are so inspiring dude.. you helped me conquer a bit of the fear i had for programming.ik i am not that smart i am just average..and seeing you achieving so much from a low point in your life for a good reason(family) just gives me hope..i too want to get into coding so i can give my girlfriend and my mother a good life..thank you so much for your videos dude❤️
You deserve it man, you put in the work. Don't downplay your effort, you deserve to be proud of where you are and the work it took to get there.
Thank you, but honestly somedays I still wonder how the hell I did it. Looking back now it doesn't seem like it was that hard but I do remember that the struggle was very real! Thanks for watching!
Thanks man for your good guidance 👍
Thanks for watching!
You are a genuine person.
Same man, martial arts sparked something in me that led to improvement after improvement. Movement, fixing your diet and finding a good group of friends are definitely key. Best of luck on the rest of your journey 💪
Good video I know I can relate to this for sure
Love you bro :)
This is my exact mindset right now. I’ve been training jiu jitsu for a year and a half and am finally feeling like I am making some real progress. I’ve been messing around with coding for about a year on and off. But for the last four months I’ve gotten re-motivated to really apply myself to coding and all because of the progress I’ve been making in jiu jitsu when I thought I’d never get good at it.
Yes. Let's get it 💪
Hello, Dorian. I just discovered your channel, I am currently watching all of your videos starting from old, just wanted to post on your new one so that you could see - the way you give information and the content itself is great. I will stick with this channel, please keep do content. Thank you for sharing your experience and time and good luck with everything you have in goal.

This is inspiring!
This video reflects my current situation a transition from mediocrity to a better life.Thank you for you honesty it relieved me in a positive way to keep pushing and never give up ❤🎉🎉
THANK YOU.
thanks for this! im 33 and im literally feeling the same way. i've already started cs50 this week and i do find myself having a hard time to sit down and go through the classes. I really needed this to remind myself to just keep showing up and eventually things will happen.
How can I reach out to you personally
Your content is the real deal. I really can relate. I'm 33 years old now. In the early 2000s, when I was 12 years old, I created websites using Microsoft Front Page and Fireworks as a pure hobby. They were sites like Dragon Ball Z fan page and for my Age of Empires 2 clan.
Long story short, I studied psychology, it took me a while to find myself, I had depression and at 28 I started Information Systems in one of the best public colleges here in Brazil. But I still had a long journey. I worked in support of a famous web hosting company, and it was boring and also frustrating. Only years later, tired of the life I had, spending time and money on dates, procrastinating and never solving my finnancial problemas, did I stop and dedicate myself to what I always loved deep down: Front End. A few months ago I got my first job in the area using Flutter. It just happened when I was getting ready to be a freelancer. All the anguish and pain created a base of experience and wisdom... And man... How satisfied and happy I am with this new phase. Keep up your great work here. Greetings!
Cheers 🍻 to the regular dude. That’s one reason I like your channel you don’t claim to be a know it all and you are NORMAL most likely that’s because your not trying to see a product (a course and what not) when you do the tutorials and have to work through them like the flex box it resignated with me that’s exactly how I feel when I work through stuff and made me feel less dumb... that alone gave me motivation to keep at it not that you don’t know but that you who know a lot is still learning and that’s what I’m doing as well.
Best channel for my mental health
We appreciate you!! If you've ever questioned your purpose in life, please know that you are valiantly fulfilling it

@@DorianDevelops thanks alot this really help out, hope it help someone else
Honestly I think it’s dope you make inspirational things like this, because I’m at a point in my life where I feel lost. An basically wasted my 20’s away. Doing nothing that would build my future. I have a son that I love an need to take care of. Now I’m 32, and I’m tryna be the change in my life I want to see. So I decided to take up a career in coding/software development. I’m a high school drop out, but I’m motivated to make this happen. I’ve been studying coding a completing course on free code camp. I’m a week in an definitely feel like I don’t know what the hell I’m doing, but videos like this lets me know. If I stay to it I’ll find purpose, an get the career that’ll help me be where I want in life. Thanks a lot for everything you page gives back to people !
How did it workout?
I agree with everything you have said, we as humans don't understand that something would have to click for us that would set us on the right path, when I nearly gave up on coding in 2017, i was able to find the motivation and drive to continue even when it felt like I was a failure
This is a great video
Almost 32, thank you. Started entry level coding and I'm sooo crap esp in comparison to my other entry level peers. My time will come, baby steps and consistency 🙏🏾
Thanks for the motivation , I’m 45 and I’m learning code from your suggestion free code camp.again thank you for your videos
Watching this for the first time a year after, it really helps cos I just reached that point of it clicking. I actually started learning programming too, I'm learning C# and I hope to go into web dev
Anyways, keep up the good content boss👍🏽
I was glad to hear a real speech of the real human !
Thanks for the video. I'm through the same thing. I want to be a developer, but I'm 50 and sometimes think maybe it's too late for me to learn to code because there is so much to learn. After 15 years of working dead end insurance jobs, I began last summer to start learning to code. I wish I would have started this about 10 years ago. Right now, I'm stocking shelves at Walmart overnight (not that there's anything wrong working at Walmart), I constantly emotionally beat myself up because I didn't learn how to do this sooner. Sometimes I feel motivated to code and sometimes feel overwhelmed because there is so much to learn. There are so many videos, it's hard to find the right one to learn from. I have some knowledge of HTML and CSS and not starting to learn Javascript and it is over my head. Sometimes, I feel like I'm not smart enough to get all this. I have parts of static websites that I work on but it's hard to code what I picture in my head or what I draw on paper. You're right, there is no magic pill, I wish there was. I know it takes time and I keep telling myself to take it one step at a time. I'm learning Grid, Flexbox, and right now Javascript a little bit at a time and try to apply it to my projects and hopefully will get it. I just want to get it enough to start a career in it, if it's not too late. . I don't know anyone else to talk to about coding and because of Covid, there are not Meetups going on right now. Sorry for the long post. I really like your videos and they give a kick in the rear to keep going.
Once bitten twice shy. Many of us here have poured ourselves into all we had into the field we were in only to be thrown to the curb. Probably tried other avenues that have been unsuccessful. Blaming ourselves cause why are we failing so much and now struggling and failing at coding tasks just opens us up 2 all of this again.
Thats probably why we need that encouragement. As this feels like our last option to be able to provide for our families cause we are falling deeper and deeper into what we think is a point of no return.
Life has a way of kicking us when we're down but it's important that we find that inner strength that makes us get back up. I know how hard it can be and I will never say that "it's easy" nothing in life is easy but with grit and determination anything is achievable!
This guy speaks facts... man described all my thoughts 👀
thank you
