@@ACTUALLYrussell Yeah, you can create a deadline for multiple goals. I just picked a date that I wanted to have the goal done by, then put it on a piece of paper and hung it up by my desk where I saw it every single day! It was a constant reminder, so it was always on my mind.
I think that's the key. Write the goal down, then make it visible to see everyday as a reminder.

I had all kinds of crazy jobs, dishwasher, landscaping, etc. Then I had this girlfriend that was attending college and she said to me: why don't you study something? I wanted to impress her, so I took the admission test and passed it. I got into a Computer Programming degree. Best decision of my life! I love technology and love my carrier. It is a myth that you have to be a "Math Wiz", basic Algebra will do and logic. Anyone can do it! When you do learn Ruby or any other language just remember this when you start out and know nothing about coding:
As you learn to code you will see and then design very simple codes that are super easy to understand.
Now as you learn other stuff and add to that simple code you will see how that simplistic code builds up over time to look very hard indeed.
What keeps it simple is when you have line numbers turned on

Hi Chidi, good to see you learning on your own! I personally don't recommend Java to beginners, as it's really hard to learn as your first language. Even me that's been an engineer for years, I don't like doing Java, so I can't imagine a beginner trying to learn it. I've seen Java stop too many people in their coding journey because of how hard it is.
I'd recommend you start with web development fundamentals: HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
After that, Python. But, I wouldn't bother doing Java at all.

Blessings my brother. I am also a self taught software engineer. I only picked up a book to get started.
I can honestly relate when you were describing your learning journey. I too did those coding marathons, at times even over 12 hours because the time was there for me and I was very much interested. This was because I quit a job I lost interest in.
3 months later I secured my first role as a junior, very low salary to begin with but I wanted it (Knowledge and experience). This is where I gained much of the knowledge and experience I hold to date. I moved on from that employer.
Where I’m at now I can do so much more and specialise in different technologies. The bigger picture is for me to be in a position to roll out solutions for businesses and organisations as well as giving back and most importantly solving problems.

Ima black software engineer working in the field. I work at a company where developers are making 100k plus, I’m just not getting that much. My goal is to reach that amount of money in 5 years. At the company I’m at because they give extra large raises when they promote you.But I see that you got 100k donein 3. That profoundly motivated me. I didn’t start coding in college or highschool like some others. I started teaching myself C when I was 12 and I’m 33 now.this was before the “teach children to code”mission began so I just had no colorful code games. I just had a black and white book.I always look at how people have been coding less time than me but are way ahead of me as far as income and job roles. I have once again heard another story, your story, where you’ve been coding less time than me but have fabulous success. I;m glad to hear it. If you can do it so can I. Thanks for sharing your story.

    • @rootstechnology
      @rootstechnology  3 года назад +3

Exactly! The way I was able to significantly increase my salary in three years was by job hopping every 11 months, instead of waiting for a raise. Typically, raises are between 2-5%, if that, but with a new job, you can increase your salary way more than that by just asking for more money. If you don't get the more money, at least you still have that raise. So, it doesn't hurt to job search and ask for more money, in case you aren't already doing that. Wish you the best on your journey.

Hey Simone! That's great you've started teaching yourself!
Are you learning Python because you're interested in Data Science?
Because if not, and you're learning Python to be a developer/software engineer, then you should start by learning web development fundamentals first, in case you haven't already, and that's HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
That's because when building websites with Python, you need to know the basics of building websites before you even start learning Python. Otherwise, you'll have to come back to learn web development fundamentals anyways when it comes to building Python projects, so it's better to start at the beginning then in the middle, and have to go back.
If you're doing data science though, then disregard that lol
      Hopefully that helps!
