The dev used to work in casino gacha mobile games so he made that experience into this without the monetization and life ruining that comes with gambling addiction. There's a good interview on how he describes why every sound, light, etc. Is so important when you literally only move.
Funny that you mention that, because I felt as if someone could monetize the shit out of this lol. But it makes sense considering how addictive the game is.
Unless you try 20 Minutes Till Dawn. Vampire Survivors is fantastic, but Dawn adds a layer of player agency (you still need to shoot to produce most of the crazy, screen-filling attacks) that ultimately gives it more replayability, I feel. Don't try both games back to back. Your family will never see you again.
I'm an indie game dev and i can say with out a doubt this game is genius. The key genius here is that the player never does anything but move and avoid enemies, which probably made the testing for it as easy as making a basic avoidance AI to emulate the player. Which allowed him to add TONS of upgrades and feature rich content, as well as TONS of replay-ability all without having to kill himself from testing in the process.... 100% I feel so many games just are so much more fun to watch once you've experienced the game personally regardless of bad or good game its always more fun to watch something you've touched.
I played it for the first time after a late night gaming session, thinking “I’ll try it out for a second and then go to bed.” Next thing I knew, five hours had passed and the sun was coming up.
Absolutely hit it on the head for the explanation in the 1st 5:00min of the video. I saw this all the time recommended for Steam Deck and was just not feeling it. Didn't look fun for me. My friend then talked about it later so I looked into it again. For $5 I was willing to buy and try it. After the 1st game, I was invested. Instantly hooked. All my friends play it now.

Since you like Vampire survivors, i have a few extra suggestions based on the same concept. Brotato: an absolute blast to play! Its a more action condensed version of VS, based on rounds and having boss fights and stuff. You can aim your weapons if you choose and it has a surprising amount of replayability. Soulstone Survivors: its isometic and a lot faster. You have more AoE markers on the ground to avoid and 6 spells that get strong in their own unique way. This is one of the few of the genre that can compare its unlocking catalogue to VS and its still technically early access. But it already feels like a complete game. Spellbook Demonslayers: a fun one that takes a similar approach to Vs visually, but 32 bit instead. It recently added a dash system, so you can dodge a lot of enemies, and various builds to try out. It can get intense, with a quick key for toggling auto aim and aimed attacks, which you may need sometimes to push a hole through the enemy to fucking live. Its fairly intense, but fun. Out of these, this is my last pick only due to Early access status and less unlockables overall, but it has a much deeper difficulty setting, so a lot of replay comes from that. Lastly, 20 Minutes Until Dawn: Unlikr most games, you get 1 weapon, a gun you pick at the start, and each character has their unique powers/abilities. It instead has a trait system that turns your 1 basic bitch gun into a war crime that makes even VS end game builds go "how is that allowed" at times. I will warn it feels distinctly different, which isnt a bad thing, but is fair to mention. Its controls and style is just a whole different feel.
I'm personally not a Pentagram fan due to the experience/chests/item wipe but I do love how it looks when it (and especially Gorgeous Moon) fire off. It's also saved me from certain death in rare cases.
On the pause menu push “Show Guide” This will have the power ups that start on the map have symbols and arrows on the screen just like the boss boxes do when they are dropped and left off screen.
Holocure is a fan made rendition of vampire survivors featuring vtubers. The rendition is so respectfully done, like VS, it is continually updating. Plus it's free.
Focus on upgrading the crown, you get upgrades a lot faster and it is the best passive for early game when you're waiting to find the right weapon or passive.
Man who would have thought my game of the year for last year, would be a game everyone would get hooked on this year and would be like, "WHY DID NOBODY TELL ME ABOUT THIS GAME?!"
The way the "10 minute mark" works is that bosses that SPAWN before the 10 m mark don't drop evolve chests, but every chest in Capella Magna and Gallo Tower evolve, those 2 levels are the exception.
VS absolutely hit the nail on the head and found the perfectly simple recipe. There's a lot of other devs coming out with similar "Bullet Heaven" games that are all putting a spin on it. So far my favorite is Soulstone Survivors as it adds in a dodge and some neat class related stuff.

My buddy has been trying to get me to play this game for months. I finally played it tonight for the first time and I am completely hooked. That first time you get a run that REALLY goes, its all over.
this game is easily my GOTY for 2022. no game to me was more worth the price of admission. sure its basically engineered to be as addicting as possible but its entirely reasonable with the asking price and gives so much in return. Ive had some pretty insane runs in this game. The most crazy thing you can do is go to the bone zone and crank the curse level as high as possible with starting 50%, curse skull, torratas box, gold ring and left arrow. and just watch as the screen struggles to keep up, all in all it pushes the curse well over 250% and bone zone has no healing items. so the best way to heal is to use the disco of gold arcana and try to keep as big of a chain as possible.
I got into it a few months back. Dommario main here; love me that sick giant AoE constant damage. It's so quick to pickup and play. Love it for that reason.
The safest early game combination is the bible, garlic and wand. The bible and wand have the highest knockback and garlic reduces enemy resistance to knockback, so combining these 3 means few enemies can even touch you and it just snowballs as you level them all up.
Fun Fact about White Death also know as White Hand he doesnt Deal Damage. That is also why Crimson Shroud has no effect against his "attack", because rather than dealing damage, White Hand sets player's max health to 0, ignoring any form of invincibility. Also White Hand's movement is relative to the player's view rather than the character's position on the map. This means that it is not possible to outrun White Hand.
it's always a pleasure watching new addicts get hooked on roguelites. try rogue genesia, scarlet tower, holocure, 20 minutes till dawn, bounty of one, and brotato. those are the big bois of roguelites.
Best part about VS to me is that it feels good to make builds and how you break the game. I looked at this game early on and thought "yeah nah this is just a sotn copy" and then after I played it I had that feeling of being hooked.

Ive managed to get every achievement and unlock everything so far. The game sits at 100% completion and Im desperate for another DLC even though they have just released one. I DONT HAVE A PROBLEM...SHADDAP!
Vampire Survivors, a.k.a Bitrate Destroyers :D I do like the end game QoL improvements they've recently added, such as being able to differentiate boss chests from Arcana chests, the "Always money bag/Chicken" options, the "Always Random" after you're able to evolve the evolutions and the fact that when you have all the upgrades, you don't have to watch the full animation just to get money bags from dropped chests.
If you max out something like Duplicator, then pick it up off the ground after, you will get an additional rank. 3 ranks of Duplicator instead of 2. Works with all relics.
That 0 bitrate edit for the intro was perfect for this game. Great entertainment as usual.

The safest early game combination is the bible, garlic and wand. The bible and wand have the highest knockback and garlic reduces enemy resistance to knockback, so combining these 3 means few enemies can even touch you and it just snowballs as you level them all up.
Ripley appearing and just saying "DADA!" melted my heart, love you Max
Welcome to the addiction Max. Vampire Survivors and games that spawned from it were my addiction for most of 2022.
LOL Max said "Thank God for the pentagram!" and I immediately could hear it in John Denver's voice a la "Thank God I'm a Country boy". 😆
Always fun to see Folks unlocking Great Gospel~ Max having "No Idea how a run could be any crazier than this" is amazing Foreshadowing.
Max I've played this game since months ago and I'm so happy to see you play this.
It amuses me greatly to see that Max finally discovered this game. It's definitely one of those games you have to play yourself to understand.
I love that the Castlevania Music is in the Back I believe it was Symphony of the Night.
Please play this game to its current entirety max!! I've got over 500 hours into and you're still just scratching the surface of it! Long time fan here and ill watch my favorite RUclipsr and streamer play this any day....along with any other video you upload 😀
I started playing this on a 7 hour long flight. All I remember is playing, asking a stewardess for tea, and then landing.
I didn't even get up to pee. This game made me not notice that I was on a flight.
The happy juice kept flowing and I didn't notice anything else.
4:18 Sounds exactly like mobile games except there's an actual *game* in there. I'm glad to hear that this guy who used to design slot machines is making real games now, that makes me happy.
I downloaded this game on my iphone randomly on my 10 minute break the other day, did not expect Max to cover it. Was not aware of the hype around it either. Very cool and deserved of the game!
They just added Castlevania chars to the game. Perfect opportunity for Max and the Doods to re-visit and co-op this game
This was part of my annual Winter Haul. At one point, I had 20 hours into this game. God of War had 5.
i've also noticed that mobile games that play like vampire survivor have been blowing up lately as well. it scratches a certain itch in my brain that i didn't know i needed until i played VS for the first time
This really reminds me of arcade games. They had this particular addiction. Simplicity is best as they say.
Love the castlevania theme they are using. It's from the beginning of Castlevania Symphony of the Night with Alucard entering the castle.
Rougelikes are an amazing genre and its growing so much
This aint a roguelike tho
Ive managed to get every achievement and unlock everything so far. The game sits at 100% completion and Im desperate for another DLC even though they have just released one.
I DONT HAVE A PROBLEM...SHADDAP!
1:23 - 4:40 is by far the best explanation of what this game is like to play holey moley. Max is just so good at explaining shit.
Vampire Survivors, a.k.a Bitrate Destroyers :D
I do like the end game QoL improvements they've recently added, such as being able to differentiate boss chests from Arcana chests, the "Always money bag/Chicken" options, the "Always Random" after you're able to evolve the evolutions and the fact that when you have all the upgrades, you don't have to watch the full animation just to get money bags from dropped chests.
It’s addicting af and surprisingly deep. And it’s free on ios
If you max out something like Duplicator, then pick it up off the ground after, you will get an additional rank. 3 ranks of Duplicator instead of 2. Works with all relics.
Fun fact: Great Gospel was also the name of the last Limit Break of Aerith in the OG Final Fantasy VII
