- GM Ben Finegold explores the exchange sacrifice in a 1994 game between GM Garry Kasparov and GM Alexey Shirov, a game between GM Anatoly Karpov and GM Ulf Andersson and another game between Karpov and GM Veselin Topalov. This is an advanced lecture presented to a live audience at the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis.
Does a lecture on positional long-term exchange sacrifices, manages to turn it into a comedy routine.. I swear to god this man is a treasure to chess.

As of 9/14/2023, Stockfish 14 with NNUE says the Kasparov exchange sacrifice is +0.8, about a pawn up for white, at depth 33.

If you're down the exchange and the game's almost equal, I would call that a successful sacrifice.
Yeah, I was surprised when Finegold said the computer didn't think much of the exchange sac because it gave a score of almost zero. If the computer doesn't like your exchange sac, it scores it -2 or worse. Any time it says you're about equal when you're down on material, that means you have a ton of compensation and you're in a good place and, typically, your opponent has to play very accurately to maintain that near-equality. I'm sure Finegold knows all of this!
I'm a chess player. I make a sacrifice if in my analysis I'm going to gain some positional advantage. Judging positional advantage should be the kind of thing Finegold is teaching. Not comedy.

Interestingly, lc0 finds 17. Rxb2! almost instantly and says it is the best move! stockfish doesn't find it on its own, but after you play the move, even it agrees now. Guess this Kasparov guy was pretty good!

When I first saw GM Finegold he reminded me to an enemy of mine. He's been so mean to me. So I got a prejudge against GM Finegold, but really liked his lecture, very pedagogical style, the way he points out things are so good, that even a child would get something of all the exposition. Very understandable material, very fine. And the theme was so important. Excellent job!

Regarding the sacrifice, the real trick is the distance black's knight needs to travel in order to challenge white's on d5. The deceptive proximity ordeal is an important concept for beginning players to understand.

at 33.04, what happens if Rd4 instead of Qd6? White cannot move the knight, and he has no more checks.

I'm not really a strong chess player, but I think after g5, white can play g4 to win the knight as a compensation. if Ng7 then the black bishop now has a safe square, and if Nf6 then the bishop not only has a safe square but it can also capture g5. btw I might be wrong.

As soon as you learn to analyze who has a positional advantage, you will know when to sacrifice. Look at the 'game of the century'. Its not clear, but Bobby knew he had a solid position advantage and it was set up by the queen sac on move 17.

The point would be to find a better option then Qxa6 as in the game or Bxf2+ as suggested earlier.

For a beginner, it doesn't really matter. You just need something that will run through your game and point out the tactical errors, and any engine can do that. And, for now, ignore any suggestion that changes the evaluation by less than about 0.5 -- essentially, it's saying "Well, this move is better, as long as you then start playing like a grandmaster" and you're not gonna do that.
(Yes, I know this comment is six years old, so you're probably not a beginner any more. But maybe my response will be useful for somebody else.)

I agree. Obviously knowledgeable about chess, not funny. Show us a game where you're a piece down, but you have two connected passed pawns. Show us the correct way to win a game like that.

People underestimate the value of a bishop because the value of controlling a diagonal is not valued properly. A bishop can challenge a queen on a diagonal while a rook cannot. Rook 4.6 Bishop 4.3 Queen 9.0 "Chess Secrets The Value Of The Pieces" on you tube. Great video, thanks Mr. Finegold.
Well, a rook can challenge a queen on a rank/file while a bishop cannot, and last time I checked, there are 8 ranks and 8 that both have 8 squares to control, while there are only two long diagonals, both only 7squares. Sorry, but it should be Queen: 9.0, Rook: 5.0, Bishop, 3.1, Knight 3.0, King, 3.5.

Even though these two words are used interchangeably, they are not synonyms. In fact, their meaning are quite different. Simply put, horrible is associated with a feeling of outrage; while terrible is associated with a feeling of dread or terror.
If they're used as synonyms then they're synonyms. Language is not prescriptive. However people use it is what is correct.

Usually, yes. The one case I read about used a tiny earpiece which is very popular amongst certain students (i.e. those cheating in exams). A walk-through airport detector would not find it, and a hand-operated scanner would need to be set to high sensitivity and directly scan the ear. Plus, the device could always be planted at the scene in advance.
The way I've seen used most frequently is when your opponent makes a move that isnt legal or possible. You sit there in shock wondering what to do.
Bb7 and Nb8 just looks ugly. Usually black plays 0-0, Bg5 and meets a4 with ba4 and Rb8.
