This guy is so funny. and the fact that he tells a joke and doesn't smile, laugh, or even acknowledge the joke he just made makes it that much funnier.
Ben's humor is a lot easier to understand when you get all of his random movie references. Being a chess and movie geek, I just found him tolerable at first, then eventually found him really amusing and enjoyable to watch.
I liked the lecture. He didn't insult anybody and was quite humorous and engaging. More lectures with him please. To make it even better, there was an appearance by the incomparable GM Seirawan. Thank you for the uploads.
I love this man! Even if he is "rude" at times, I don`t see it as rude. He just puts it in a humorous way, so I really don`t mind, because I know he does not mean it "bad"... Furthermore he makes fun about himself at times, so you see he is just a funny man. So you get entertained and learn something at the same time, isn`t that great!?
Billyray Martin, I felt the same way when I watched Ben the first time. I didn't know if I was learning anything between insults. So I watched the other GMs for a while and a few weeks later I went back to his. Then I found him quite entertaining and informative. If you "get" his humor you start to love him. I'd like to meet him some day.
One thing I rate about Ben Fine gold is that he has strong NERVES. He will tell a joke, have you laugh off the table and will look at you not laughing.
You ROCK Ben, God Bless you. You need to put out some DVDs and get some moola rolling in. U derserve it! Thanks for these Lectures. Thanks to the STL Chess Club and to Yasser. You guys are treasure troves!
@ Cory Kent.. I thought the same at first, but when I watched more of his videos, I started to look at it differently. He's not really trying to "diminish" other people, because he makes fun of himself as well... It's just light hearted humour, nothing more.. I think when you watch more of his videos, you'll start enjoying it.
LOL! Yes me. I am watching at home and I am a fish. Guilty as charged, however, I love your videos and Yassers and Irenas and thank you, hopefully I can learn something. God bless you all and keep the videos coming!
Such a funny moment. At 24:41 Ben says "Especially watching at home. Yeah you." And I was like "Hey that's me." Then he's like "He knows who I'm talking about." And I was like "*insert head explosion* I know EXACTLY who you're talking about." That was funny.
lol at the hyperbolic topology comment. as a 1st year grad student moving into Algebraic Geometry, was excited to hear a nerd topic within a chess video!
“Trying is the first step to failure… Truth hurts.“ -Ben Finegold… A joke “modified“ by me strictly using ONLY Ben’s words! This dude is hilarious! The truth does hurt unless in this case it doesn’t(Another statement inspired by Ben! L to the friggin OL Feingold‘s humor is fine gold! Lol
6:50 he says his rating was 2000 at the US open in 1982...and he was also 12 years old at the time. Is that not a chess prodigy/genius?? I know that's not grand master 2500+ but a 12 year old being rated 2000 in 1982 seems incredible.
Ben knows how to get his point across in style. I admit when he said I'll bet you can't find a checkmate in one, I paused the video for the longest time and was swearing at the monitor. lol
Maybe he's talking about me. Although that being said, in that position, if I were playing black after Bxh6 I probably would have tried something like Bf6 instead of gxh6 to bring more forces into position to defend my king.
At 36:05 why not queen to h5? threatening queen to h8 mate and i dont see any pieces being able to stop it. They do move their queen to delay it but not to stop it. Am I missing something?
Ben, if you still want to be one of the best, you can be. Take a Sabbatical, come back and attack the hec out of chess. Regain the passion and the vision. Like Adam Sandler's friend in the movies "You can doo eeet!"
Notice how nervous Ben gets when Yasser walks into the room. It looks like he developed a tick, starts sweating profusely, and talks even quicker about something that has nothing to do with his game (probably a Yasser lecture from earlier on Short vs. Kasparov).
I also played Albert Chow in Chicago in an exhibition match where he had one minute and I had 10 minutes. I somehow managed to win both games, even though I was, and still am a below-tournament-level player (a noob).
47:25 I think Bxd4. After cxd4, then Qh4+. Then, the king has 3 options. Ke2 or Ke3, which both lose to Re8+, followed by either Kf3 and Qg3#, or Kd2 and Rxd4 (That's why i wanted to take on d4 with the bishop, otherwhise i couldn't win the queen). The last option Kf3, seems to lose to Re8, trapping the king, and threatening mate in 1. The only defense i can find is Rg1, but that only seems to prolong the inevitable. With Qh3+ Kf2 Qh2+, Kf3 is forced, and then Qf4#. So either mate or wins the queen, but i can't find a forced mate in the Ke2 Re8+ Kd2 Rxd4 variaton, but it gives black a solid advantage. Is there anyone who can see it, because i can't...
"I used to be good back in those days. Now I lecture you guys. So you see what happened." Under breath: "What did happen?" lmao
That wasn't really under breath but yeah
This guy is so funny. and the fact that he tells a joke and doesn't smile, laugh, or even acknowledge the joke he just made makes it that much funnier.
It's funny because now, he never leaves his jokes unacknowledged! Haha, watch his most recent ones at his school in Atlanta.
It took me a long time to realize that.😎
Definitive dry humor. I agree.
You blunder enough pieces, you don't need to sacrifice any 😂😂😂
"Those of you watching at home... yeah, YOU!"
Brilliant
Terrible
Very suspicious...
There are a couple episodes on this channel when the camera zooms in, and it gives off a "The Office" feel to it accidentally LMAO
He keeps telling me I'm bad and I love it :)
Ben's humor is a lot easier to understand when you get all of his random movie references. Being a chess and movie geek, I just found him tolerable at first, then eventually found him really amusing and enjoyable to watch.

Finegolds hair line is very suspicious

Only the insecure feel offended by these jokes :)
he's my old jewish grandfather that i've never met
thumbs down L.S.F.
Billyray Martin,

Even the most dim witted individual with an advanced degree in hyperbolic topology can see this move.
Damn, Yasser only makes it to the intermediate class? Tough audience
lol@Colin Murphy
I must say GM Finegold, I have been diligently and watching ALL your lessons here on youtube and I just had to say, I am LOVING IT! You are FANTASTIC!
New drinking game . Whenever Ben says terrible or suspicious take a shot .
I just read the reply, chuckled, and then saw who wrote it
@@victorraphals-kath2097 look if you want to not die in the next couple minutes, I suggest you not play this game
RIP
"Ra7 is risky because of Qd8 mate" lmaooo
No this guy is really super funny and entertaining. I like him so much :)
Are you alive ?
Just wondering

Thank you for all of your great words of wisdom Mr. Dr. Professor. Grandmaster Finegold!!!

This made my day hahahajaja
"I am too old for this position"
The amount of easter eggs in his speech is pretty amazing.
This was a great video! It was very instructive to me. I loved all the example games and in-depth explanations for each move.
6:40: "Well Bisguier wasn't Bisguier anymore and Soltis was never Soltis..." Bad Ben... Bad!
One of his best lines.
Suspicious
Another entertaining from the 40 year old GM. Many thanks.
Nothing but love for Ben, please keep him coming!
You ROCK Ben, God Bless you. You need to put out some DVDs and get some moola rolling in. U derserve it! Thanks for these Lectures. Thanks to the STL Chess Club and to Yasser. You guys are treasure troves!
another great lecture....my favorite part....Ben knows Canadian Geography!!!
Giving your students such a good confidence boost
"you play badly, but I played worse... Not really" lol
In another video " I can't even call you guys beginner's, let's call you beginner beginners" lol
Fine gold has lot of sense of humor which makes his lecture much much better............. he is unique....... I like him.......
Ben and Yasser have a beautiful bromance.
The lectures off Ben are amazing, he is very knowledgeable but he is also really funny!
When will we get a lecture from GM Ken West?
+Colin Evans He's too good, whatever Stockfish's rating is, add 100 for GM Ken West!
+The Anti-Theist Ken West got his first positive norm against the under 8s last year. You gotta be proud for his achievements.
Greg Battis In all fairness, these kids are getting better as every year and decade passes. But yeah, Ken West, not so good. :P
+The Anti-Theist Ken West should play me in a tournament. I like gaining free rating points ;D
He’s tied in rankings with GM Arjun
ok, he was my favorite so far. Terrible.
thanks a lot for sharing all of these great vids.

"Now you're making some sense - not much, but some" :-D
gotta love how he rips on his students constantly
He makes jokes but he does it in a nice way letting the people try and find the correct moves and not making them look foolish
I like him.
Kate Wild what would grandmaster Ken West say?
Ben, love your videos and teaching style....!!!
LOL! Yes me. I am watching at home and I am a fish. Guilty as charged, however, I love your videos and Yassers and Irenas and thank you, hopefully I can learn something. God bless you all and keep the videos coming!
"The lower rated players in this class - which is all of you" lmao
"In 1950..." That impression was on point

This was uploaded on my birthday =)
[44:58] Where does Ben get these jokes. Now if he mates me, I mate him first.
I fucking love this guy. Such a contrast from Akobian. If I was going to be taught, it would be by Ben.
+uutarn Me too
Or Seirawan
I watched this video and then only made 9 mistakes in the first 10 moves. Thanks Ben!
"Knife f5." lmao
Hiki catching strays back in 2013!
Great lecturer 💝
"I like white. That rook on B7 is so powerful it scares the bejesus out of me."
...That's pretty close to how I analyze.

2:30 simpsons reference to the mad professor ( I can’t remember his name, maybe prof frink )
At 28:30 doesn't Bxe5 work faster than the recommended f4? Just curious, as I don't use an engine.

He was the winner of the 1993 Samford Fellowship, so yes, he is very good.
Excellent instructor!
Super cool guy, pleasure to watch...
Ben's jokes are always immortal😂😂😂.No matter how was ur mood VERY SUSPICIOUS!, the beginning of the video brings smile to everyone's face! TERRIBLE!!

LOL Morphy style was popular before Gangnum style, fo sho.
@ 20:40 why not move h4 bishop (somewhere/anywhere but xf6) for 1 move mate threat?
"Made a 9 question mark move." LOL
"Yeah you! That's right!" The truth hurts.
I think he missed mate in 3 at 36:16

pretty cool lecture, way better than the karpov video.
