Biased Kansan here, the plains hold their own beauty, the sky can be truly stunning contrasted against it, all about perspective. I wish we had more public access, walking paths, and campgrounds to support folks, but I can't control that unfortunately. :)
You have the beautiful storms. My two oldest sons and I have threatened many times to come out there and hire a tornado chaser to take us around since that’s actually a thing now. I’m a wildlife and landscape photographer from East Tennessee. I’ve lived my whole life here and I can tell you for certain that we just don’t have enough sky here to chase tornadoes and any tornado is going to do damage to homes and businesses since we’re packed in like sardines in a can here now. Extreme overpopulation and tornadoes just don’t jive.
Sorghum is what I call milo. It will turn a beautiful red or white before harvest. We planted that 50 years ago (we are 75 miles east of Ellinwood) The reason you're seeing it is because that chances of having a good crop are better than corn when the rainfall drops off although Corn has made tremendous strides in the last maybe 30 years and is working now in country where milo used to be only grown.
Wow! You two are just amazing! I hope you have a great few hours of sleep and I just can’t wait for Matt’s remarks tomorrow morning 😂. Keep on trucking. Yes I’m an old fart so I can say that 😂👍🥾⛰️
Seemed nice enough though this was one of several cities where we had a slightly surreal experience thanks to lack of sleep and coming and going at odd hours. That bikepacker camp was a really nice little setup
And who is Stan? And why does he need a refuge? That's the REAL story here! But the Cheyenne Bottoms story, and the great visitor's center is the other one. Nice folks to take care of our Masotaters so nicely with water, shade, and even some cool exhibits and movies. Keep cool and, . . . . Hike On! Tortoise
Grandparents lived just west of Great Bend and farmed. Relatives all either moved to Denver or Wichita vicinity. Only have one 2nd cousins daughter living there on their home place. Church was torn down aprox 6 years ago.
This hike must rank way up there on the list of difficult hikes. Between the monotony of the endless miles, dog encounters, the heat, and storms most people would give up. Great job, hike on!
As somebody who as 30+ yrs in the HVAC industry, I can tell you natural gas doesn't have an odor, the gas companies actually add an odor to it so that people can be alerted if there is a gas leak in their homes, businesses etc. Again, with my HVAC experience and working on many air conditioners on homes and on rooftops for businesses, at least with the heat you had what appeared to be a pretty steady wind, that makes such a difference over air that is just sitting on you, especially in the more humid east where I live. Based on the scenery, I'm guessing you folks are getting into a much drier heat these days? With somewhat of an educated guess, I was correct on the sorghum field before Jen told us. I was pretty happy with that one. lol
We’ve had a continuous hot and dry wind which has a habit of leeching all the moisture out of you. A cool breeze can be a lifesaver on a hot day but we’d have been better off with no wind vs this
Yea, looks like I’m heading into a rough fire season. But at least being primarily on roads I feel like it’ll be easier to work around them vs say being on the pct
When I was a little kid my neighbor’s cousin from Great Bend used to visit for 2 weeks during the summer. She used to cry when she had to leave because she loved the mountains and tubing down the river here. I understand why she cried now. Just sayin lol Actually, the photographer/weather nerd part of me would love to come out there and go on a tornado chasing tour.
You should get some cards printed with a QR code to your site. Once I did this it saved me from having to give away cards. I just show them my logo on the front, flip it over, and have them scan the QR code. Works great even for non-tech savvy folks.
I have a hang tag from hiking America like that. I haven’t personally found QR codes to be a great help though as they aren’t straightforward for everyone
“It’s miserable and it’s never going to end” should be the state motto, LOL. You’re very near where the Spanish conquistadors abandoned their search and turned back the way they came.
Starbucks Via Columbia and Veranda blends have been the thing I’ve stuck with the longest. Tried a lot of others but most lot them are just a little too bitter. I did use Maxim for a good while

"mister taters hikes" if you wanna get cute and non-threatening. or you could double down and go with "the cult of the killer hobo's pilgrimage" or something.
Just think about the first white people to see this. No roads, no crops just miles of prairie grass and weather not nearly as hot as we experience today. It must have seemed miraculous, a gold mine for the agrarian.

I always tell people that when I hiked the ADT through Kansas, each place, each field had its own beauty and personality.
Total respect.Total.

I was afraid they were going to find Stan and he didn't want to be found!
The guy behind the desk there took our webpage and left a comment a few days back. He was really awesome to us

Western Kansas is so beautiful especially the sunsets
Sunrise and sunsets have certainly been a highlight. Shame about the whole middle of the day thing…
"We ❤ Bottoms" and you cannot lie...
I had several other versions of the title which sadly ran afoul of the character limit and / or (per Jen) good taste.
Thanks. ✌🏻👊🏼

Colorado fires are growing rapidly, just a heads up. Hope they don’t mess up your trip.

Matt Not much rainfal in Ohio now. Grass at my house in Shawnee is half dead. Only have to mow small areas.
Good domain choice re: Masochist hikes. My first thought was Masotaters, but that still takes some explaining...
I thought of that but felt the spelling might confuse people.

Corn drying up and looking dead is the natural process.
We’re learning all sorts of farming related factoids on this one

I heard XYZ is closed due to fires.
I heard XYZ was full of other people and way busy.
