  • The Allegheny Mountain Tunnel carries the Pennsylvania Turnpike (Rt. 76 & Rt. 70) through the Allegheny Mountains. The tunnel was built in 1939 and is 6,070 ft (1.85 Miles) long, it was the longest tunnel at that time, and considered an "engineering marvel". The tunnel is used by 11 million vehicles annually today.
Throughout the 2000s, state officials attempted to implement plans to replace the tunnel, citing its age.

Construction of the bypass is now underway. They've started excavation about three quarters of the way down the mountain, following the old South Pennsylvania Railroad grade.
The bypass is slated to use a cut instead of a new tunnel, so hazardous materials loads will no longer have to exit the turnpike and take Route 31 over the mountain between Bedford and Somerset.

Bypass isn’t started yet current construction is for widening and eliminating turns. Bypass is scheduled to start after the current construction is completed

6,070 feet is 1.15 miles, not 1.85. The original 1939 Allegheny tunnel still stands (just south of this one) and is heavily secured by the Ganassi racing team who use it for testing.

I don't understand why it's such a big deal, the liberty tunnel in Pittsburgh is 1.1 miles long. There's a man door every .1 mile and a total of 11 doors. 1.1 miles. I've driven through both, yea it's cool in the winter..but I guess I'm just tunnel jaded

Some secret person emerges from the little passage ways in the wall and provides gasoline and bids you on your way with a tip of the hat.

Pray that the people that are driving are paying attention and not driving too fast or in a semi truck or it’ll be a disaster waiting to happen
