Indian workers have built many large infrastructure projects for other countries in deplorable working conditions especially in middle east. It's great to see them working for their own nation in much better working conditions and playing significant part in nation building.

@@Aethul-wd9keYou gotta start somewhere. One thing good about India is that because of their deep seeded discrimination against each other over thousands years old differences, they will never be united enough to try and cause any global disruptions like China is doing now. Sure many Indians will be in C-level positions but that’s poaching their best and the rest will squabble like usual. Won’t matter if they have 2 billion people!

As an Australian structural engineer, now retired, i have worked in both countries and I like them both. Dismissing the politics behind the tunnel, it is great to see India ploughing money into its own infrastructure. Both countries have excellent engineers and both countries have a huge pool of labourers for jobs like these. I was in Northern India recently and was given a guided tour of the new metro rail system that is being built in Delhi. It is very impressive and much needed. Unfortunately due to restrictions in China regarding foreign travellers i have been unable to go there for the past three years, but I cant wait to return one day.

Depending on where you’re from you probably won’t be able to go to China again. They’re ramping up for their attempt at global domination. And their economy is in shambles. It’ll be a miracle for them if their nation survives the next decade. It’s actually quite bad. I went back right before the covid 19 outbreak and was astounded at how bad the situation is. I probably wouldn’t go back at this point. As an American It was an entirely different experience than the first 5 times I went. I was not welcome. I’ve worked there many times. It’s too dangerous and depraved now for my taste. I actually witnessed some pretty dark stuff in the rural communities I visited. It’s very different than in Beijing. The Uighur concentration camps are horrifying…there are children and pregnant women imprisoned there forced to work.

Not too sure about the hard work bit either, one reason why the country isnt really progressing. You basically have 2 types of people in India, the ones from the various non labour castes who have never done a hard days work in their lives and the labouring castes who work for a pittance at about 1/10 the productivity of a Western worker.

This is not only strategic as focussed in this video but it is going to be a life changer for Leh-Laddakh and Kashmir Valley and Jammu people bringing long-awaited proper and fast connectivity. Strategic aspect is just half of reason. There is no all weather road for Ladakh rn. It is an area of around 60000 sq KM. People live there who have to rely on air travel or risky roads in winter. Imagine no fresh veggies, supplies for 6 months, including petrol. Also this tunnel will reduce travel time, there are jams here that last days. Plus all that emissions next to glaciers worsens their melting and simply for the sake of quality of life (3 hours to 10 mins). Sometimes simpler explanations are more relevant. Indian army and air force is huge and has other means, but definitely will benefit from this, but this analysis is reductionist.

@@AjaySharma-uv2nk I have a masters degree in Engineering (Civil) and i come from Himalayas so i know how himalayas and construction work to a good extent. Case of this tunnel is different. Locals know how to live in Ladakh but they dont know how to fly 80 KM. Sustainable development is important but basic infrastructure is required.
Coming to disasters, Highways are not the only cause, there were landslides everywhere. Already HImachal is a stupid state with highest Unemployment rate in country, without infra it will be even more poor. When Government comes up with safer modes like Airport (Nerchowk), Ropeways (Manali, Kullu) people oppose them and then when roads close the crying starts. Manali, Shimla and other HP towns have senseless planning, the way people construct homes is like Plains, so ofcourse damage will be like that.
Global Warming and glacial melting are caused by climate change and local pollution. The tunnel will atleast reduce the latter. Himalayas are soft and unstable, there will be landslides inevitably. The resilient infra is out of India's budget, this jugaad is all we can afford and its absence will be even more painful than its presence.

The figure of "20 Indian soldiers and 4 Chinese soldiers died" is partially inaccurate. China did not release an official casualty count for a very long time after the clashes. When they did, they only declared 4. The then Northern Command chief, Lt Gen Y K Joshi had said that Indian observation posts had noted more than 60 casualties being taken back by the Chinese, how many of them were fatal or non-fatal couldn't be told with authority. An Australian news agency, The Klaxon reported based on independent inputs received from Chinese bloggers and year-long discussions held with them and several Weibo users that 38 Chinese soldiers had died in the deadly clash. Much much higher than the 4-5 officially declared number by the PLA in a very delayed manner as opposed to the Indian side informing of the death of 20 Indian soldiers to its citizens immediately after the clashes. Media reports of Chinese casualties were very soon deleted from Chinese SM.
