I hope you enjoy it, the tool will work well for you. Feel free to contact us with any questions and remember we have a free border calculator on our website that might be helpful. Thanks.
I have a very old mountcutter, about 40-50 years old, (with a wooden base board) which allows the user much more control of the precise length of the cut, because the blade is pulled towards the body rather than away from it,and thus the palm of the hand can then be lowered down against the slip mat to act as a brake.
Hi, We also make many model mat cutters that are pivot and pull style as opposed to how the Compact series works. If you have any questions on our mat cutters or want to send us a photo of what you have to possibly identify the mfg. please call us at 800-331-6232. Thanks.
Yes but have it set up the mirror image of how the guy in the video has, and drag it towards you rather than pushing, hold the guide rail down with your right hand (this is what it says in my manual anyway!)
I bought one of these. Very easy to use but I found when cutting a window that the sliding guide was not 100% parallel with the cut line, probably only out by 1-2 mm but very annoying as the window was not exactly square to the mount.
Hello, A mat guide that's not parallel would result in borders that taper from one end to the other. Can you measure the borders and see if the are the same thickness from top to bottom or are they tapering? The mat guide can be quickly re-paralleled if necessary as seen on page 5 of the instruction manual. Please contact us if you have any questions at cs@logangraphic.com
Hello, The mat cutters that are above the Compact series all use pivot and pull style bevels cutters instead of push style like with the Compact series. You could however use a #702 pull style bevel cutter on a Compact mat cutter. This is a replacement part that could be ordered directly from Logan. Please call us for more details. 800-331-6232. Thanks.
bevel is inward....how do you use this to see the bevel after mounting? seems we need to have different marks on coor side and protection as we push cutter?
Hello, We always design our mat cutters to cut from the back of the mat board. This avoids having to make marks on the color side and having tools sliding over the color surface that might leave streaks or marks. First you measure and mark the border lines on the back of the mat board. Always use scrap mat board under the mat you are cutting when bevel cutting. Then using the mat guide, insert the board color side down and cut from line to line. The window then drops out from the front and the bevel cut is on the color side of the mat board. If you have more questions, please call us at 800-331-6232. Thanks.
No that is not recommended. A self healing cutting mat is a dense rubber and will dull the blade and even break the tip. Best to use scrap mat board as a slip sheet and move it around, flip it over and eventually change it. Thanks.
My Logan 301 is many years old. There is slippage of both pieces of matt when I attempt to cut. Is there a remedy or should I replace it? Thank you Sandra Delzell
Hello Sandra, You must use a slip sheet under the mat you are cutting made from standard scrap mat board. You must gradually move it around as it gets used up or flip it over until it needs to be replaced. You can use masking tape to help hold the slip sheet in place. Also make sure you are applying pressure to the guide rail while cutting to prevent the slip sheet and mat from sliding. Make sure you are standing at the end of the mat cutter to push the bevel cutter away from you.
I have always had a slip sheet underneath. I have successfully cut matts for a long time then it stopped working. I do all the other motions you mentioned. It is no longer stable.
With this machine, you need to stand so you are pushing the bevel cutter away from you with your right hand and putting pressure down on the guide rail with your left hand. Make sure your blade depth is set jsut to score the surface of the slip sheet.
Hello. The bevel and straight cutter both use razor blades which I believe could score Styrene. But the tool is not specifically made for this purpose so I am not sure how practical it would be. You could have a look at our 709-1 Acrylic Plastic Cutter which is a scoring tool used to scribe plexi acrylic and then snap it. That can be used along a suitable straight edge or any of our board mounted mat cutters.
It depends on how often you cut mats and how long the cuts are. The blade depth should be set to only score into the surface of the slip sheet. After the slip sheet becomes worn over the area you are cutting, turn it the other way around or flip it over until its completely used up. Then replace with more scrap mat board.
Hello. The slip sheet is just scrap mat board. Like a piece of standard 4 ply buffered acid free mat board. You must use a slip sheet when bevel cutting but remove it when straight cutting. Only use mat board as a slip sheet and nothing else. Save your scraps and window drop outs as they can sometimes be used as a slip sheet. Eventually the slip sheet becomes worn and you will need to move it around, flip it over, turn it the other way etc. until you need to replace it. Thanks.
Hello. The full capacity or largest size mat board you can get between the hinges on the Compact series is 32" or 810mm. The opening has to be somewhat smaller than that to account for the border widths at either end. The smallest border you can set the mat guide to is roughly 3/4" or 11.5 mm. Which would create an opening of roughly 30 1/2" or 774.7 mm. We also have mat cutters that accept up to 40", 48" and 60" sizes if you need something larger. Thanks.
Bought this at a yard sale. Figured some day I might use it. Today is the day.

Just ordered one ! What does the slip sheet do ? Does it come with the cutter ?
Can this be used by left handed?

Does this product work for cutting foam board? Thank you.
Yes, the #500 mat knife that comes with it will straight cut up to 3/16" (5 mm) foam board.
Do you have pull cutter for the 301 com pact mat cutter. I have better control at pull than push.

Sandra Delzell use a slip mat...I think a scrap piece of mat is all you need...shows this in this video.
