  • Here at Wildlife Aid we are not species specific - we save all animals, including these 14 innocent baby mice! A kind lady brought these mice in to us after sneaking them out of a sure-death situation, when her employer called upon the services of a local pest control unit. Babies of this age need to be fed a special feed every two hours with a paintbrush, so this is what we'll do for the next week or so! We split the group into three smaller groups and gave them to three of our skilled orphan-feeder volunteers for a few sleepless nights ahead!
    A massive thank you to our dedicated volunteers for caring for these little babies!

    I just had to do that only I used kitten milk and a tiny syringe. I kept the baby outside in a nest hopping the mom would come back and after 2 days she returned and took the baby away. A happy ending.

    All life is precious. Even if after released back into the wild they simply become a meal for another animal. That's another animal that got to eat which might have kept it from dying. It's natural and beautiful and if those poor babes had just died at the pest control, and been thrown in the trash, their short life would have been pointless and it would have been such a waste. And who knows, mayhaps the mice will get to live out their short life to the fullest; a chance they wouldn't have gotten if these wonderful people hadn't saved them.

    We had to rescue 9 baby mice when my cousins cat killed their mother when they moved the shed. Thankfully 8 survived to adulthood. They were only 2 days old when we got them and it was the hardest and most rewarding experience. We used a paint brush and warm kitten milk and they did so well. Combined with a heat blanket and we weaned them on baby rice.

    I go to a park during the wintertime to feed rats starving for lack of natural food. I feed them organic corn, and other vegetables. They are super smart, and fun to watch. They even recognize me :) I love all animals. they are here on this Earth for a reason

    • @buggy4532
      @buggy4532 8 лет назад +5

      That's so amazing! I rescued a mouse from our house (we have a cat) and released it onto a nearby grass field once. But that's nothing compared to actually going out of your way to feed rats that people call 'vermin'.

    • @breadandcircus1
      @breadandcircus1 8 лет назад +5

      +Silver Poppy  Rats are wonderful creatures who have a right to live on this Earth with humans and the rest of animals. I don't see rats as "vermin". I see them as animals that have helped humanity to make progress in medicine. We owed a lot to these vilified animals. I see them as suffering animals, and from that perspective I feel compassion for them :)/ They are here for a reason, like any of us, like any animal on this Earth. All of the  animals came from God's breath of Life

    • @buggy4532
      @buggy4532 8 лет назад +5

      +breadandcircus1 It's sad what their blamed for. The plague was actually the fleas which could be on any one or any thing. Rats actually try to keep clean by licking and preening themselves. Rats shouldn't come to your house unless the condition is unsuitable outside, for example, if they nearby

    • @buggy4532
      @buggy4532 8 лет назад +4

      +Silver Poppy a forest and that forest is turned into houses the rats will go scavenging.

    • @breadandcircus1
      @breadandcircus1 8 лет назад +5

      +Silver Poppy any people look down on certain animals and this is wrong. Many people call people who have committed heinous acts "animals" when animals don't act out of evil, revenge. Animals don't premeditate killings, when they kill is to defend themselves, or their young ones, , to survive. Thanks to rats, mice, science has developed many drugs and found cure for many diseases. Rats and mice are unwilling heroes, extraordinary animals so vilified, hunted, and that ironically have improved the lives of many humans. I hate to see them in research labs, that's horrible, cruel. But many people don't think about it

      +13Xerro It's a useful tool! It's soft, holds the liquid they need to eat and it's small enough to fit in their mouth but sturdy enough not to break when they suckle. I believe some people also use specific types of sponge for the same effect.

Is there any other equipment you guys have found unconventional uses for?

    Paint brush for feeding is awesome! You may already know this if you don't - I'd been hand feeding for years & had no idea about this until I started bringing a litter of new bald & blind baby wood rats to work ( they stayed in my vehicle & I'd go out every 2 or 3 hours to feed - btw temperature was suitable ) One of my co-workers suggested ( I'm an ER nurse ) that I cut an IV catheter close to the hub & attach it to a tuberculin ( or insulin syringe ) & it worked perfectly! I'd been using an eyedropper which is messy & not terribly efficient - Once the babies got the hang of it they learned to suck the formula - Oh & I told my co-workers they were baby squirrels cause I knew people would flip if it was known they were actually rats!

    • @Temperdoodle
      @Temperdoodle 8 лет назад +1

      You have to feed them a very specific formula, otherwise they could form serious digestive issues. I believe there's some sort of mix you make with kitten formula and other things, but it has to be very perfect. Baby mice die really easily without their mothers.

    My cat had a phase where he would bring me every baby mouse (about 10 days old) he could find! He wouldn't harm them, so to speak, they had no injuries... He'd just drop them off in my kitchen and wait until I pick it up, then he went looking for another.... I cared for them until they where old enough, as well as a big enough group, to survive in the wild. Such tiny creatures...but still a lot of work!

    Ive done This 17 times before. Domestic mice, of course. I've had people bring me baby deer mice, which I brought to a wildlife rehab center. They belong in the wild, and wouldn't be happy in a tank their whole lives! I have no idea how to keep the mice From being dependent on humans, nor how to safely release them. Truly, wild animals that have been orphaned should be brought to a wildlife rescue/rehab. I am amazed you guys care so much for creatures any exterminator would vacuum up (the fate that almost became of the babies I brought in!), and spend so much time caring for them. If person with no experience came across baby mice, their chances for survival would be 1 in 4.

    I cared for two baby mice that I named Chubs and Smalls. Smalls, of course, being the runt. Their mama had been squished when my friend and his parents were moving their sand carts out of the garage for maintenance. My friend brought them over, my mother refused... Until she saw them! She admitted they were cute and just like that, I was on my bike and heading to the pet supply store to see if they had formula. They surprisingly did and I cared for them for several weeks. Smalls passed away after 3 weeks and Chubs passed away just as I had started weaning him at 6 weeks. Loved them though! They were my tiny babies!

    My wife and I are doing this currently. I was at work and left my window down so it wouldn't be so hot in the car when I got off work. Unbeknownst to me a mouse entered my car and gave birth in my lunch box. Didn't know until I got home and had quite the surprise. Unfortunately thr mom was not still in my car and I couldn't in good conscience let them die without trying to save them. Looks like a lot of sleepless nights for us the next several weeks.

    my family found a newborn kitty and brought it home. She was restless and kept crying so I went to search for the mother which I fortunately found. But then the mom won't touch her maybe bc we handled the kitten without gloves. After sniffing the baby, the mom stayed away. I still feel guilty leaving the kitty like that.

    I found a baby mouse outside in the back alley, it was freezing and starving to death, completely abandoned. I look after it every 2 hours with puppy milk and a tiny syringe I got from the pharmacy. I cant look after it over night so it doesn't get fed then :( it's still here 3 days later.

    Once I found a family of mice in my cupboard and I scared away the parents, not realising they had babies. I hope you have really healthy mice and can release them back where you found them!

    Thank you so much for caring for mice. I had to put my little girl down yesterday because of an autoimmune disorder that attacked her skin. I hope they will have a long, happy life.
